As an expert on playing in chaos mode here is what you are going to want to do. Get the chaos mod and put 4x war on. Get the expanded set up mod which will allow you to mess up the world even more. If you can find a world tension reduction mod to keep it all from hitting the fan in 36.
I fucking despise that Italy isn't even given any kind of choice in the German coup focus. The thing where they request support doesn't do anything but give you a national spirit that increases unaligned support. I have had like 5 campaigns ruined because the Germans were able to brute force me into being unaligned and into their faction. You don't even get to switch back after because the National Spirit you get from them killing Mussolini is permanent and you have a permanent fucking tick of unaligned support.

Worst campaign I had to deal with was playing as britain trying to form the imperial federation but I didn't realize I had historical focuses off. Decided to buckle down and used spies and lend lease to delay the dominions from leaving the commonwealth. Got extremely unlucky when Canada got an event during the focus to form the imperial federation that flipped them to fascism canceling the focus. Gave up on it and finally looked around the map to see a super axis had formed. They had the usual european players but they had a free reign in europe because both france and poland went communist and I was ignoring Europe. Russia, shogunate japan, and China all joined the axis because Qing China and france and poland joined the mutual assistance bloc lead by Mao. I decided to play it out and started fabricating on Germany but it got cut short when India had a civil war and the free Indians joined the axis drawing me in immediately. War went horrible and took forever because it was my first game on No Step Back and I was experimenting with a lot of different templates.
SEGA Master System for the win! I think the game I played most was Action Hero? you start as a bike going down the road shooting guys and collecting letters to get into the sega truck and turn into a car then a flying car.
I've done a Monarchist world before, set every major and minor to Monarchist where possible. That was pretty fun. ended up sending a lot of volunteers as Great Britain so the correct side of the civil wars etc won.
I find Road to 56 set on random is the most.... stable but alt historical thing I've ever seen? Brazil often creates its own faction that ends up sniping countries in trouble before even Japan can, though.
Set everything to random, it's complete utter chaos. I have a category in HOI4 called "Fuck my shit up fam" where i selected every country to be 100% random with their decisions, this isn't the same as just removing historical focuses, this genuinely makes the AI just go ham and pick complete random stuff.
I think the best way to play non historical is to individually change the nations paths. Probably one of the more fun ways to change and play the game so it's not repetitive
I forgot if you've played Random Country Placement yet, but you should. If you have, it'd be great to play it again, since you've gotten better at the game (slightly but still)
Huh, would not expect Tsarist Russia to voluntarily sell land to Japan. I mean in the Russian tv show Karamora, everyone calls Sergei Witte "Half-of-Sakhalin" for giving away land in peace negotions. In peace time, selling land sounds like a career suicide.

Actually if I remember correctly than Mussolini survives the assassination. Or rather Paradox didn't think to replace him as the leader of the fascists so if you switch back Mussolini is somehow ressurected with no explanation given

I never play historical anymore. My last game was Siam, I got a world with Communist Britain and Fascist America and Carlist Spain and Imperial Germany.
