Engines of Amtrak - GE P32-8BWH

- On this edition of Engines of Amtrak, I discuss yet another freight converted diesel into passenger service locomotive on Amtrak's roster. Deriving from the B32-8 freight diesel, Amtrak quickly accepted this new widecab design to take over passenger duties for their aging diesel motive power. Once a primary passenger hauler to fill in for the delayed Genesis locomotive, the Dash 8s have since been relegated to common yard work or maintenance services.

PLEASE GO WATCH THE REMAKE OF THIS EPISODE: ruclips.net/video/YUtI1KUDvYY/видео.html IT'S A LOT BETTER THAN THIS ONE! This version will remain up on RUclips but still, I recommend you watch the remake as the definitive version of this episode.
Oddjob; a locomotive denied its ascension to primary power. Enter the punished Dash 8, forever wandering about the national rail network searching for a purpose.

Funniest (as well as the most realistic) comment in this section!
If i may may have suggestion you should do somthing called coaches of amtrak where you talk about the history of the coaches such as the amfleet and superliner
Yes that would be amazing
Here for it
Railroad tycoon 3 soundtrack brings back memories.
Hell, I still have it
@@jaysmith1408 Steam edition, boyo
you should do a video on all of the switchers, can’t do engines of amtrak without them!
I think it's not gonna happen
There’s way too many different types of Amtrak switchers. It would be hard to cover ALL of them
I think you could with some help
Penka Genova it WILL if has help
The Winnipeg railfan could help
Yes!! My favourite Amtrak locomotives
Yeah, I always thought this was the best looking of all the Amtrak engines, especially in the Phase III scheme. The Genesis models are just too plain, too European looking, and don't really capture the spirit of railroading the way its predecessors did (just my opinion).
Good old Pepsi cans
Austin Turley ha funi
I perfere coke
@MUAMMAR AXEL Its a joke and the railfans nicknamed it stupid.
MUAMMAR AXEL r/wooosh
What’s good about them?
Imagine if GE sold Amtrak B40-8Ws
Cedar Valley Rail Productions huh. Yeah
The P40DC's original official product designation was B40-8P (AMD-103 was the project code), so not far off of what actually happened...
The P32-8BWH's are just ATSF Dash-8s that got lost in shipping, you cannot convince me otherwise.
WELL THIS IS NEW
Wouldn't it be cool if Amtrak preserved a GG1, an E60, or an AEM-7 for special excursions on the NEC?
Yes! It would be even cooler if they preserved all 3 for excursion service on the NEC!
It's like...
HEY AMTRAK YOU FUCKTARDS
IT'S TIME TO TURN INTO UNION PACIFIC. IF THEY CAN RESTORE A BIG BOY, YOU CAN RESTORE A GG1.
Matthew The Railfanner AND THEIR FUCKING HERITAGE CARS!!! Not to mention their F7s, F3s, F9s, E8s, and E9s.
EXACTLY!!
Matthew The Railfanner lol
dash 8s are hands-down my fave AMTK loco
No, f40 :)
RIP Dash 8 #513 😣😣
Good riddance!
Not retired, Just undergoing maintenance in the photo shown, 513 is still around
My favorite locomotive on Amtrak!
I did see one of these on the Silver Meteor in Yemassee,SC one time.
By far my favorite Amtrak locomotive, I thought they looked so cool. Would’ve been interesting to see a body design like the f40 had with the sides extended.
Saw it once in person at the auto train terminal.
You mean cowl body?
Cool. Dosent pretty much everyone who goes there see one? It’s not even rare.
Once I was on the California zephyr and it was pulling it
The P32 units were mainstays on the San Diegans between San Diego and Los Angeles due to their ability to brake and accelerate quickly along a line that had about a dozen stops over a 120 mile route.
These were the jack of all trades
the Dash 8 was a transition locomotive between the F40 and the Genesis. Today all are still in service but are at Beech Grove under going maintenance for eventual return to service. Two power the Coast Starlight and one each powers the San Joaquin and the Capital in California. You even see them as power on the Autotrain between Miami and Washington DC. Amtrack Cascades also owns them and several surplus Genesis locomotives for the Cascades.
Please keep doing these types of videos. I really enjoy watching these short documentary’s
I love the Dash 8
A friend of mine, who used to be an engineer for Amtrak in the 80's and 90's, said that the dash 8's (or 500 class, as he calls them) were his least favorite locomotives to operate, as they rode very rough. He says that it's because of these locomotives that he has permanent back problems.
I drive a forklift, much worse than any loco. I got a seat cushion. He should of done the same.
One big Pro in my opinion is that this locomotive, GE P32-8BWH is that it just looks awesome
One P32-8bwh was involved in the 1995 Palo Verde, Az sabotage
The Dash 8-32BWH is very much alive not just as a switcher but road power on the Auto Train today!
I was lucky to catch one while riding the pacific surfliner up to LA to see ATSF 3751 last summer.
Great episode Amtrak!
Dude, you should do a “GENESIS DOES!!” joke in your next video about those locomotives.
What EMDon't.
im dead 😂😂😂
Mike, you get it!!!
Nintendo is what genisisn’t
GENESIS DOES WHAT EMD DON'T
This is my favorite Amtrak engine since they have amazing K5LAs!!!
Can’t wait for the Genesis video!
I was about to watch asmr when the notification for this vid popped up
This IS ASMR
Thanks for referencing speed and measurements in English and not metric. Also, I’d love to have that Nathan horn on my car. Man you could have some fun with that. Thanks for posting
1:28 I bet less than 50 B23-8s were ever painted in BN green!
5:07 first time i've seen a gangway cover on an American passenger car!
5:24 That's a nice photo of three out of the four B32-8WH liveries in one shot!
I wouldn't be surprised if Amtrak starts selling these engines off to commuter roads or to leasing companies for freight duty!
1. You may have mixed up the numerals, but your bet is safe: only 3 GE B32-8 locomotives were ever painted in BN green.
2. I wonder what those are used for.
3. All that photo needs for it to show all 4 liveries a GE B32-8WH carried is a Phase III (original Pepsi Can) B32-8WH.
4. Those are both possibilities. Amtrak had sold some of their EMD F40PH locomotives to commuter railroads, including Metrolink in Los Angeles, Tri-Rail in Miami, the Metro-North Railroad in Southeastern New York and Southwestern Connecticut and Metra in Chicago. Some passenger locomotives built on freight locomotive designs have been rebuilt for freight service before, including many EMD SDP-series (Special Duty Passenger) locomotives, all EMD FP45's, all GE U28CG's, all GE U30CG's and a small amount of EMD F40PH's (the last one designated EMD F40M-2F).
That 103 mph top speed can’t be a coincidence. The song spoke of “a hundred and two.”
I love the phase five scheme on the -8s
Great Video! I know there is potential I will catch grief, but this is probably my favorite Amtrak locomotive. I like the GE wide cab design to begin with and I always loved the original paint scheme the P32s received. When I went on a train trip a few years back and was in Chicago and I saw about four of them across the yard, I had a huge smile. Love these engines. The Genesis locomotives are my second favorite engines so I can't wait for that video. Keep up the hard work! You do a great job!
i am an F40 fan but the Dash 8's in Phase III paint were the coolest looking locomotives Amtrak ever had
Once the chargers get some history behind them will u do a vid on them just wondering
On the northeast corridor, thiers a couple dash 8s in the Trenton/Philadelphia area used for track maintenance and yard switching. Funnily enough, thier pretty much doing what the dash 8s are were all designed too do now.
Despite being a switcher these days, many can still be seen hauling passenger train. Not only will they be seen with a Genesis unit, but they can sometimes be seen by themselves on shorter trains.
The two P32-8BWH in Amtrak California service are still running in that service even now on the _Capitol Corridor_ and _San Joaquin_ trains, despite the fact Amtrak California has F59PHI and SC-44 Charger locomotives in service.
Nice video! I love how this is detailed and it’s great to hear about the history of the locomotives. Though they are regulated to work service nowadays, you can still find the Dash 8s on Amtrak trains once in a while.
istg the P32-8’s remind me of Gevos so much
It’s actually quite common to see these on the coast starlight as the 2nd loco I used to work near the main line in Paso Robles and would see one daily or every few days on 11 or 14 or even both
Quick question, did those America By Rail clips come from my video, or somewhere else? Other than that great video! Absolutely love the Dash 8’s!
YES ITS HERE DASH-8
AmtrakGuy, you should think about doing videos on other passenger locomotives not operated by Amtrak. For example Metro-North M1, M3, M7, and M8s, Septa, NJ Transit, Boston T and other regional railroads locomotives. You are very knowledgeable and I’d love to see more videos like this after you finish all Amtrak locomotives.
Donny Shaffer I agree highly
I will forever associate that cab with a 6 axle locomotive, and every time I see a P32-8BWH, I think to myself, "What weird trucks that has"
I think the name of them is the P32-BWH. That's what I've heard there name is a lot.
I love it; epsically the pic at 2:50 of train 11 in SLO; that's my home territory man: great video
It will be said to see Engines of Amtrak go. But hey it's had a nice run. I've leaned about so many engines like the SDP40F, Turbo trains and Metroliners and have gain much more appreciation for the F40PH's and AEM-7's.
Just week ago I bought the Amtrak Dash 8 for Railworks and I've been enjoying it.
Engines of Amtrak will be remembered greatly. I look forward to the Genesis episode.
Considering they get so little road service, will the Dash-8s be the oldest Amtrak locomotives some day? They are not going to wear out just pushing strings of cars around.
If only one of these engines was still in the Pepsi Can scheme
What is the difference between passenger and freight on the locomotive, why does it need to be different, can't the freight work fine for passenger?
The specs look a tad familiar, aren’t they fairly similar to the P42’s, but with the smaller engine? Oh wait, the P32ACDM.
The HHP-8 and the Acela can all be into one video, since they're practically the same thing. Besides speed and capabilities, and one is a dual cab, but otherwise, the same.
Awesome video like always
Best amtrak engine by far
Great video AG365!
very rare to see them on Northeast Corridor Amtrak work trains because most of them are operated by gp-38
Streator, Illinois at 6:15! Possibly the first horn sound footage as well.
I like to think this loco is the predecessor to phase IV paint because of their cab. It looks very similar to phase IV
How cool if there was a emh gp60h-24687-159607 for amtrak?
One of your best
Amazing!
We got stuck with these things at LA crew base. We engineers commonly referred to these as trash 8s. They were bought by the Santa Feces but refused. So GE talked some fool at AMTRAK into paying $I.75 million a pop for this crap on wheels. When you start the HEP, you loose 1,100 hp from traction. Only 2,200 hp left for traction. EMD was touring the country with the new F59 and we engineers thought we were going to get more Cadillacs, but we got this shoved down our throats instead. I've read some of the comments below, and it is obvious these people are not railroaders.
Amtrak employees aren't railroaders
They had a good run
Yes finally it’s out!!
Until I believe Fall of last year, the Dash 8s were sometimes used as backup power on the Capitol Limited. Haven't seen them since, unfortunately.
Any particular reason that Amtrak’s eastern yards don’t have electric switchers?
No Electric Switchers have ever been built, and only the Bear, Ivy City, Wilmington, and Boston yards are on the corridor.
Very Nice Information👌
I don't think you've done but can you do the F59PHI?
Love your Videos including this one! but got upset cause its short! Well you warned us. LOL!
I saw 515 before it was repainted in Oregon. It was cool
Also you have to do the ACS-64 and Siemens SC-44 Charger.
Can you please do a new version of reading and northern history of the locomotives including the steam engines every type Diesel in steam
hm I'm just curious but are there any b-c configurations?
The FL9 had a B-A1A configuration, which is a B-C but the middle axle on the last truck is unpowered, but no B-Cs have ever been made.
Very sad to say I haven’t seen one in over 4 years now at least running starting to get a little concerned if anybody knows any info that would be helpful
Its here. Its now. Lets go
Thanks for new vid
I waiting it for so long
I like it
Wut if Amtrak discontinued the P42s and re-continued the P32-8s
YAY!!! ITS HERE!!!
Is the pentrex video the Santa Ana to Anaheim dash 8 video made in the 1990s?
2:02 that livery is so good it makes me shocked
So is this dash 8 the little brother of the C449W
Amtrak dash 8 Repainted in Phase 5 from 2000s 2010s 2020s
Engines of my grandmas house!
What about the ACS-64 and the SC-44 Charger
This is the most awesome poop ever.
What song do you use in your intro?
Great video 😀👍👍
AmtrakGuy365 I found an engine you can do an episode in, it is Called the EMD F59PHi
Damn you sound sexy in this video! New Mic??? Also AWESOME ANIMATIONS!
I always thought that the P42 genesis was a rebuild of this
Also I kinda miss the spongebob background music in your old engines of Amtrak
If you talk about Genesis, I would love to talk about all the odd Genesis types in the Northeast!
Wait... Do you make more like the SW1000
This is rare. Seeing a dash 8 on a cascade train
Will those switchers be videos for the series?
But what about the acs64 or the sc-44? Are you gonna do those?
he is probably not gonna do sc-44 cuz its being tested rn but idk like a year later probably
He probably won't do them because the ACS-64 has just recently entered service and the SC-44 has yet to enter service.
Rhode Island Mapping the sc 44 is in service in some other agencies
Andreas Saksakulm he will probably do the HHP-8 and the Acela Express.
Rhode Island Mapping The Charger has been in service for almost a year. They started doing solo runs on the Hiawatha in late August 2017.
when I get the Mr beast ad I know its a good video
Can someone tell me what the music for this is from the intro?
