It's crazy because at that level of sports, it becomes almost entirely about mental fortitude. If you watch interviews with the top athletes, they always mention how the toughest part of the game is the mental game.
Does 1:40 look like a mental thing to you? He made the right prediction beforehand but he just can't reach the smash. I think at some point people need to stop saying it's a mental thing and start admitting momota's physics is no longer up there.
I think momota should take a good break to train and start from small tournaments again to build up his confidence, him losing early on isnt going to do him any good for his career
Momota himself knew what he's lacking. The problem is applying the solutions to it consistently. He kept reverting back to his old "reaction" play style in his games without ever keeping the attack going. I'm no expert but it is there for most people to see what he needs, be it attacking more or having mental strength and courage to play aggressively.
I disagree. If Momota played as well as he was in 2018-2019, he'd be still one of the top players in the world. What happened is that, he no longer has the solid defense that set him up for success. He also lost his fine touch at the net and baseline game. It appears that he is not as fast as he once were. Combined with his problem reading opponent's shot, he has regressed so much that we can not believe this is the same player. It is also worth noting that his regression didn't happen overnight, he rather played progressively worse overtime. What is the reason? I don't know. But I believe he had a winning formula, and I hope he recover from this slump.
@@chongminwang agree. another big point is Momota lost his great speed. Momota rarely counterattacks such as sharp smashes, when he gets a top ball attack like a lop attack. Unlike Lin Dan, when he gets an attack loop he can do a sharp counter-smash because Lin's wrist is strong
I think Momota's decline is a combination of everything; physique, good play from opponent and confidence. But I think people cannot deny that his poor mental fortitude is one of the major factors that has a cascading effect on his confidence level and footwork. Try to replay the match and you can see after losing some long rallies his footwork gradually becomes much messier. No denying that his defence is not as solid when compared to his prime tho. Change the play or retrack the long-lost confidence. Personally hope he can be back to this prime!

Stop using car accident as an excuse for poor performance, the reality is Momota's style of play is sinking, nowadays men's singles revolves around speed and power. If you gonna keep defend, eventually you'd get smashed left right and center.
Momo should now try switching things up - training in Europe, different coaches, playing smaller tournaments to rebuild confidence, watch tapes from before his accident in MS, throw out the lame Astrox 99 pro and revert to the OG Astrox 88D, try meditation, consult some top end sports psychologists and get on a different diet. Flip the script completely. It's not working now, so forget sunk costs and start over! Hope Momo makes an amazing come back! Hats off to Prannoy too - he's looking scary! There is something fundamentally wrong in Kento's playstyle now. I have been a close follower of Kento way back in 2017, and his playstyle has changed for the worse.. Back then he wouldnt bat an eyelid in challenging at the net. His net control was topclass, and he could gain attacking opportunities from that alone. Nowadays, he always lifts to the backcourt even when he is early at the net. If his defence is still good, this wouldnt be an issue. However, his defence has not been as good as before, so his strategy of lifting to his opponent would only backfire. Aggressive players like VA, LZJ, Ginting & Prannoy evidently took advantage of this. Im not opposed to a player changing his playstyle, but this playstyle simply isnt working out for Kento, unless his defence can keep up with it. I see this not as Kento's issue, rather I find it weird that his coaches are allowing it. Once it becomes a habit, it will be tough to change.
Momota is no longer the same player he once was. Heck, I don’t even think he’s a top 10 player at this point. He’s probably not going to win any titles for the time being. Best course of action is to change his playing style and rediscover the confidence.
I think I noticed some changes on Momota's body. Some muscles have decreased, for example, look at his upper arms (bicep and tricep). They used to be more muscular.
If Kento Momota or any of his coaching staff ever read this comments - the issue with him now is his power on smashes. He can’t score one point or put away a rally with his smashes. He used to do that very effectively before the car crash. When you can’t score on your smashes even when you’re on good position gives your opponent unbelievable confidence and more opportunities. It’s a mental and tactical disadvantage. His game previously was to get his opponents in trouble with great skills and put away the rally with a jump smash. That’s how Lin Dan won his matches too. Now with Momota unable to kill the play with a smash, he is draining of his energy with extended rallies and giving more and more confidences to his opponents. With great defensive skills he used to drain opponents confidence and now with his weak attacking, he is giving them more confidence. By doing that they are able to break a tired Momota’s defense! He lacks power to get back in to top form.
Axelsen got this kind of low times before, losing almost every game against momota before. Now look at him now, back to the top. Can momota did it too?
@@izsan9070 i think he meant momota isn't even trying to play seriously? like some fans couldn't believe momota is this *weak* after watching his gameplay?
What is happening to his footwork? Compared to earlier. So slow now a days. Thought he was coming back in shape after last years Denmark Open Final - where he played close to former level!
His game has always been based on his opponents making mistakes. The difference is: he can sustain and back it up anymore (no more pressure on the opponent).
@@dutchvanderlinde2 He is trying to say Kunlavut or Zii Jia are possible opponents for Viktor in the gold medal match. Shi Yu Qi can only meet Viktor in the quarter-finals.
Momota after defeating Kunlavut last month: MALAYSIA OPEN: ‘CLOSE TO FINDING MY ANSWER,’ SAYS MOMOTA Momota after losing to VIktor 2 set: we be like ohh it's the accident that ruined his whole career, blabla etc.. Kento momota already stated just last month he is CLOSE TO FINDING HIS ANSWER, and now everything convert back and blame it on accident again and again? Guys, seriously? Blame it on the accident again? I watch his gameplay just now, his movement is just very slow, couldn't catch where shuttlecock gonna hit. Obviously this kind of gameplay couldn't beat any top 10s. He should watch the videos of how he beat Viktor back then in the 2018/2019 to find his own answer.
Seriously? Watching a video would change everything? In that case no needs to training or anything just sit on a sofa and watching videos 😂😂 He definitely lost his shape and cannot catch up the speed of the shuttle and any videos can do something for this -_-
The only reason why Kunlavut lost against Momota is both of them have almost similar style of play which is quite passive, while Kunlavut relies on defend and counterattack, Momota relies on net play and long rally. Because Momota has weak offense, Kunlavut has nothing to feed from and eventually succumbed to defeat. Let's be real, Momota's strategy isn't gonna work in this day and age, because most of his opponent would want to avoid long rally by setting up for big smashes against momota.
Momota needs to stop using Astrox 99 pro , no power due to the racket design . Compare to previous rackets he used Zstrike , 88d , 99 navy .. They provide him a powerful smash and consistent playstyle. Lee Zii Jia used to be used Astrox 99 pro and it did not bring him any good result , now he is powerful with Victor Ryuga . ASTROX 99 PRO IS TERRIBLE FOR EVERYONE :D
@@sendoh7x 10mm more heavy at head , sitff changed 10% is quite different dude. Do you watch LeeJiiZija when he used Astrox 99 pro , so why he played better since he changed his racket back to ryuga
Probably. But racket won't affect your footwork and overall speed/reaction time. That some of the things that pretty much obviously different from his prime years. Also, you know he's a pro, he should really do something if the racket really doesn't suit him
Now im actually wonder was all momota reign before this was just some extremely rare big lucky event/era, all player just kinda sleeping or everybody else just improve but not kento.

I mean this is a graceful exit. I wouldn't want to see him losing 5-21 to LZJ
In this form,LZJ would beat Momota in single points on both games which would be a shame
His game has always been based on his opponents making mistakes. The difference is: he can sustain and back it up anymore (no more pressure on the opponent).
I think Kunlavut or Zii Jia will be potential Victors opponent in final
What about Shi Yu Qi? he seems potential
@@dutchvanderlinde2 shi yuqi can meet viktor in qf based on the draw
@@dutchvanderlinde2 i dont think so
@@dutchvanderlinde2 He is trying to say Kunlavut or Zii Jia are possible opponents for Viktor in the gold medal match. Shi Yu Qi can only meet Viktor in the quarter-finals.
Yes definitely, Prannoy or Lakshya is possible too.
Huge upset.. Hope Mamota is ok. he's definitely way off his form lately.. Should have been an easy match for him.
Kento... Ohh.. Kento.. What Happens..
Does anyone know where to watch the game live in the USA? thanks
Its live on this channel

I think it's time for Momota to play mixed double. I think any part of 1 of his leg, suffered injury that effect a lot for his movement on court. ☹️
Momota after defeating Kunlavut last month: MALAYSIA OPEN: ‘CLOSE TO FINDING MY ANSWER,’ SAYS MOMOTA
Momota after losing to VIktor 2 set: we be like ohh it's the accident that ruined his whole career, blabla etc..
In that case no needs to training or anything just sit on a sofa and watching videos 😂😂
He definitely lost his shape and cannot catch up the speed of the shuttle and any videos can do something for this -_-
The only reason why Kunlavut lost against Momota is both of them have almost similar style of play which is quite passive, while Kunlavut relies on defend and counterattack, Momota relies on net play and long rally. Because Momota has weak offense, Kunlavut has nothing to feed from and eventually succumbed to defeat. Let's be real, Momota's strategy isn't gonna work in this day and age, because most of his opponent would want to avoid long rally by setting up for big smashes against momota.
Why?? We are waiting for Momota vs Axelsen.
i don't know, n i CAN'T said anything about "a new Momota" something happened to him after that crash 😥
ASTROX 99 PRO IS TERRIBLE FOR EVERYONE :D
nonsense😂
For pro players, racket probably only affect small percentage of their game
@@sendoh7x 10mm more heavy at head , sitff changed 10% is quite different dude.
Do you watch LeeJiiZija when he used Astrox 99 pro , so why he played better since he changed his racket back to ryuga
Probably. But racket won't affect your footwork and overall speed/reaction time. That some of the things that pretty much obviously different from his prime years. Also, you know he's a pro, he should really do something if the racket really doesn't suit him
Maybe its time for KM to look for greener pasture other than playing on court.
Does anyone know what Mizuno racket Pranoy use?
JPX reserve edition
Malaysia really ruined momota career
what do you mean?
@@animemachinex3 he had an accident in Malaysia
Accident happened. It's an unfortunate event. Don't blame the whole country.
Earth ruined momota career
Destiny ended Momota's career
Could it be his racket is too heavy to control? When Momota prepares for an overhead shot, he raises his racket quite late
He had been using Astrox 99 (before shifting to Astrox 99 Pro), which is one of the most head heavy Yonex rackets
i think its string.. what happen to aerobite white/red
Momota only lost a few percent, but it's over for now. Maybe he can come back?
Karir Momota udh selesai kyknya era nya udh berakhir
Also what's the shot at 1:37 called? Any tutorial links? Tia
Cross net shot i think
The way momota is playing i think even i can beat him
what's wrong with kento? really miss the rivalry of momogi
Too slow mamoto...the best again lcw moment..
Moto playing style samurai 😆😆

Now im actually wonder was all momota reign before this was just some extremely rare big lucky event/era, all player just kinda sleeping or everybody else just improve but not kento.
I think Momota level decreased + other people improved. 2 3 years ago he was Axelsen kryptonite, now he don't stand a chance against him for exemple. I don't really know why he is struggling so much now
@@spiegel972 I would say others have improved
That's really what I'm thinking. The only consistent player to challenge him at that time is CTC and if you look at his style play at 18/19, nothing special to me, just the defence from him is Very good
No bro, it’s most probably of the accident
@@MHH610 he has a very good game plan which suited his style that time

Momota is finished.
He lost his confident, lack of spirit, got smashed on final 21-4 by Axelsen.
Already falling down
Literally no offense from Kento
I think prannoy won against all top player but he is not consistent player
