Fascinating interview, thanks to both of you ! It made me smile when Tyler mentions critics . My wife's friend who is a renowned internet troll commented on a recent print of mine that it should be in a mortuary or funeral parlour .She was trying to irritate me but I still regard it as the most positive comments I have ever had !
I've often referred to Tylers thing about what would you change if the print was worth a million dollars its a great philosophy and a testament to his eye for detail

At first I was a bit reluctant to watch this video since it is the good part of an hour. I’m glad I found the time and did it- and I enjoyed watching every minute. Besides from being very well entertained I learned a lot, as with all of your videos. May you two be strong enough to stand the rage and hatred of others, and as Tyler even be inspired to do exactly that. That’s probably an important part for being successful and a big lesson to learn for all of us. Thanks Alex for sharing

My big takeaway here is that far less can be learned by studying an artist's body of work when compared to listening to what they have to say. Suddenly, every photography book I own is a mere CliffsNotes born out of personal interpretation; a case study in reflection. Sometimes the lesson is one of how to learn.

Fantastic work Tyler and Alex! I had go to Google Images so I could see the images you were talking about, and they're all there. Today's Pro Photographers on Reddit all proclaim 'never work for free'. I prefer the 'always work for free and let the images speak for themselves' approach. Maybe that's not practical for the average working photographer, but the rest of us can stop chasing likes and just go out and do what moves us.

Knowing the fact that all levels of photographers go through the same problems at varied levels keeps me motivated as a beginner photographer in continuing my photography journey as well as other streams of creativity. I thought that I am going through these situations only because I am a beginner which meant that I am not good in photography yet. Knowing what to take in and what to ignore as a beginner will help us continue the journey.
This channel has helped me a lot. It's truly motivational.
Can you please do a video on 'How important is it to print out photography work?' In this digital age the process of printing feels to be very important to me as I began in digital photography.

Just watched your interview with Tyler Shields not long after watching your video on William Christenberry. Like Mr. Christenberry I started taking photos with a Brownie (in 1960 at age 14) and often took photos of old buildings, billboards, etc. and I still like taking those kinds of images. So how can I relate to Tyler Shields? I have also taken some photos over the years that I set up like the simple photo of the red shoes and blue socks and liked my results even if it’s not what I normally photograph. I enjoyed both videos because they both took (take) interesting photos and are dedicated to photographing what they enjoy and cared very little about what other people thought of their work. I really enjoyed the interview and I am definitely more in the style of Mr. Christenberry and if he were still alive , I would still rather share a drink and conversation with Tyler than Mr. Christenberry.

    Thanks for that informative interview.
As an aside, going forward I'm curious as to what role Tyler's girlfriends played in his creativity. His last gf of roughly seven years featured ever-so-prominently--many photos of her are in this interview.
I get that personal life is personal life; yet when you blend it up--creatively, personally, professionally--that's a whole new conversation on inspiration and execution. Lines can blur. How does he make it work? Does he shoot more? Less? Welcomes input? Or drives forward with a singular vision?
Are his subjects/girlfriends collaborating, jumping in, offering input? How does he build his rapport and trust in some of the sketchier moments (dangling out of a helicopter, perched on a bridge). How fun was it? How does working with a partner affect the whole process?
Lots going on in the background, that's for sure. I suspect this won't be the last interview either--that could be a whole other story. Cheers.

The only reason this guy is known is because he is obviously wealthy. Dropped out of school at 14 to travel the world speaks volumes. If others had that kind of support it would be impossible to fail. Then he states, completely demonstrating his rich mentality, “Whatever you can imagine, just do it.” Most of us don’t have an unlimited budget to use when taking photos. At the end of the day, this guy is not a photographer. A photographer is capturing reality and then trying to make it interesting. This guy is creating reality and then capturing it. He more like an artist, than a photographer. He is creating what he sees in his mind and to hell with reality. That is NOT photography. Now, that I got the jelly out of the way. His work is intriguing. But , as I said, he had advantages most do not have. I wonder how many photographers have actually become world renowned from a poverty background. I think the answer would be a big fat 0. If, I am wrong, please name a world renowned photographer that was born into poverty. I am waiting…

@@billmartin1663 I would agree 👍 just doesn't make for great entertainment as far as his presence on RUclips. I like when he's with Mike but not a fan of his own channel

I don't like his work at all.
It oozes negativity, depravity, darkness and often works with occult themes.
He's like the photographer version of Marina Abramovic.
    No wonder hollywood loves him....
