Xbox One's DRM U-Turn: Is Xbox One Back in the Race?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 июн 2013
- Microsoft has scrapped Xbox One's online check-ins, DRM bobbins and region locking in the face of "candid feedback" - and of PS4 pre-orders outstripping Xbox One pre-orders. The Xbox One update issued by Don Mattrick (link below) backpedalled on some of the Xbox One's unpopular features, but the price and the mandatory Kinect remain. Is Microsoft's climbdown enough? Is the Xbox One back in the race? Or has the damage been done? We talk it over. Your thoughts below, please!

It's interesting to watch this kind of stuff almost 6 years later when there are talks of the new generation...
I just noticed Jane's top is covered in moustaches. Never change, Jane, never change.
I like how she's just siting there staring at andy
So what about the achievements do you still get new ones every so often or would that be one of the features to go?
A small clarification, for the always on-line games, do u need the xbox live gold to play the single player version also?
Hello from 2018.!This is a really interesting discussion given where we are now!
Hello from 2019, I just indulged on all the Xbox One OXbox videos. I remember all this stuff happened.
Hello from 2020! I walked into a console wars from 7 years ago!
Hello from 2020, are you in for a big shock!
Hello from 2024.
I Mustache you, where you got that top.
THANK YOU!! i feel the same way the family sharing sounded so good
And I'll be able to buy the correct plug/an adapter to deal with that problem completely right??
Great show as always guys. Jane's mustache shirt was also hilarious.
I wonder if they have looked back on this since PS4 has sold more than double the X1 consoles... I upgraded from a 360 to a PS4. I still love the channel and enjoy the content, I don't actually watch many Playstation channels but I certainly watch most of outsidexbox's videos
Jimmy Bagz as a person who's only ever has playstation im here because the hosts are funny and entertaining. I could personally care less what system they're playing on.
The only reason I know anything about Xbox 1 games is because of this channel. Microsofts online only (even if technically redacted) was enough for mr to ignore the console. Microsoft really didn't realize that some of us traveled to places where internet was not a possibility.
What price will all Xbox one games be??
Pre ordered mine last week. The change of policy is nice to hear though.
So, can I buy an Xbox One/Playstation 4 in the USA/Canada and be able to bring it back with me to the UK without any issue??
If they do that i hope they do it at launch because that would be the system i want. If i can keep the shared library option.
I could go either way right now. Better just to wait to see what games come out where.
Just wondering what console will gta5 be on????
I'm not thrilled about who it all runs on the cloud and how they want to get rid of discs. I don't know about other people but I love having a physical copy of games.
I am having a hard time to decide wether to buy the new gen or study...
I was quite in shock when new games for 3DS cost £40 in UK. They have lowered the bar now. It's like between 30 and 35 for a brand new 3DS game. It really depends on the development cost as I see Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward for £17~19. Project X Zone cost £22 and will release on July 5.
That's only at launch there will be bundles come Christmas time (and other such holidays)
Why can't Microsoft kept there previous policy's on drm but only when you haven't got an Internet connection that's when you need to put a disk in ?? I was looking forward to switching between tv, firms, and games without keep changing disks
I preorderd the xboxone as soon as it became available the drm and other "problems" didn't bother me
I want neither, does that count?
Well it's now ahead on the Amazon pre order chart
Thats not the problem with me. its that we were already promised a one time installation and then you can get rid of the disc, now the reverted to the stage of 360. Doesnt change my stance, still gettin me a xbox one
a brand new game on this gen cost £60 so £55 is cheaper?
Yes i actually would because the "flaws" with the pre-DRM policies didn't bother me at all.
You do know that some of the features that the Xbox One had was dependent on the 24hour check-in etc, however Microsoft has said that some of these features may return later. They have already said 'cloud gaming' will be "returning" :)
I am very pleased with the reversal by M$. I'm excited for both new systems.
It is probably only going to be a timed exclusive though.
It's a shame we are losing the no disc play feature. Could they not keep that feature in provided you are online? That would be a best of both scenario. It will also be interesting to see how EA will act. I imagine part of the plan behind dropping online passes was under the assumption that they could make up the money via online drm.
why xbox one80? where did u come up with that name?
I'm predicting a game free bundle with the Xbox one to be more competitive price wise
I'm getting a PS4 but I'll get a X1 in a couple of years if they release some exclusives that I would actually want to play.
A PlayStation ad came on before this. Greatness Awaits. And I agree.
yeah thats the one big thing holding me back is my xboxlive account my gamerscore tag etc,i never have used kinect nor do i have any intention to use kinect and ya know if i can get the same thing without kinect for £80 bar cheaper ,well it is tempting it really is and thats why i still not really made up my mind
Was looking forward to digital future in some respects. All they have to do is make digital copy cheaper than disc and/or include all pre order bonuses. In addition for a digital future had should have been at least 1tb.
do u guys have ps3s?
i didn t really pay attention to the talk...i was thinking, jane is into basketball....i would have seen her better in volley ....but it is quie logical isn t it ? she is pretty tall....
what kind of other sport do you see her do ?
i was getting xbox one before that any way cause i though the DRM was pretty cool and i actually like the kinect voice talk thing and the skype while playing games and stuff so for me i was always going to get the xbox one with kinect but i can see how if they made just the xbox one on sale without kinect they would get alot more preorders
Have an xbox 360 currently but will be getting a ps4 probably this time next year :)
yes and a LOT of other people did what happens when i leave my console for a day? I am mainly a PC gamer and only use consoles only for exclusives yeah it would not work out all that well...
This type of video is so fun to watch from the future. Throughout all of these videos about the Xbox One's announcement, you can kind of tell that they all knew Xbox was in for a rough time with this gen, and ultimately they ended up being right. I wonder if this was when they realize "huh, we should get a PS4 channel".
Edit: speaking of things that have aged well, I went and found the Gizmodo article Andy mentioned in this video. The author suggested that Microsoft was planning to pass savings on to the consumer and make digital games cheaper. Hilarious!
Agreed this was to ahead of its time. maybe down the line it will happen, but not yet.
Microsoft should state that a years live gold is included in the box that would certainly help. I like my dance central so yes I do like my kinect but since its a must for xbox one I think that games will be able to make more use of it. Xbox one was always going to be my choice simply because of the exclusives are more to my liking. At least now its easier to swallow.
Cheaper SKU with a smaller hd as installing games no longer mandatory.
I think allowing family share for digital only games is anon good idea. Give people the choice. Most people I speak to weren't really that bothered about the 24hr check. They won't muddy the water now though.
Oh and Titanfall (have you seen it) is confirmed by Respawn as online only.
If they made it so the exchange rate was the actual price it woul bring it to something in the high £300's so it would probably only be around £40-£50 difference and that is likely enough to away most people with a 360.
At first I thought you were being sarcastic but then I never found a twist...
Love your discussion... but your audio kind of sucks. Are you guys using a boom-mic? The room has WAY too much distortion. Sounds like your in a tiled-room, like a bathroom or a kitchen... :(
my opinion has changed still getting a PS4 first as it's cheaper but i am now thinking of getting a XB1 somewhere down the line where i wasn't even planing on it before this
Well I think you've hit the nail on the head. The big juicy carrot is the power of the cloud. Loads of MMO's being pushed, and the people who like that kind of stuff will lap it all up as always. Required internet connection and DRM is pretty much a given there as it comes with the territory. Anyway my heads sore from thinking about this stuff for weeks, giving it a rest for a while. Glad you guys are sticking around anyway, and I'd like to give extra props for Jane's moustache pattern T shirt.
I'll be getting the Xbox one, enjoying the exclusives, 300k servers, and partnerships that they have made(Skype). Basically what the 1080p camera on the kinect can be used for(6 way Skype).
seriously, what the hell...once again, Mike has a great tshirt!
I do not know if we are close to a video game crash. The verity of games do seem to be lacking for me. Seems when ever there is a new game maker that is gaining success it is swallowed up by larger company and those games disappear.
Feels like only 5 game titles are made with just new graphics and with sports updated rosters. If something new does come along then they change it to make it more like the 5 game tiles.
I think so to, get the sales, get the commitment, xbox gold memberships bought a renew then BAM oh btw were changing it back because they always leave stuff like that in fine print on the contract.
Titalfall is always online, there's no singleplayer mode. Also I don't think it reallly requires the cloud, they've suggested that it could be onm the PS4 in the future, also it's on PC and 360, I doubt they're using the cloud.
Yes for the 360 in the run up to the XB1 release. What I'm saying is that on PS4 they're getting Driveclub (brand new PS4 game) for free with PS+. XB1 owners aren't getting free XB1 games every month.
i think they are going on about the XB1 having DDR3 and the PS4 has DDR5, now i'm not that tech savy but i think it means the PS4 is faster at loading things than the xb1 but i don't know if it means it's more powerful
You're not alone bro
I liked your views on this. Agreed that there's no way they're going to make games cheaper
I think they should give you a choice if it's always online or not
Thnx for the insightfull feedback, lol
Now to go play all my fully digital games. 😎
I think MS will include some free XBL for a couple of months or so to close the price gap abit. Kinect they will not remove. :)
After the 'Horde Command Pack' for Gears 3, Cliffy B warning us on the perils of shady DLC practices, is like Oliver Reed saying you've had too much to drink.
the whole drm thing never really bothered me, i just want my backwards compatibility
Things like dlc have regions so it will become very difficult eventually
I'm not a fan of kinect, but after the announcement I am more willing to let the price difference slide because its in box. Also Xbox, in my opinion has better exclusives and I feel they will have a much better online infrastructure. After E3 I was sliding towards getting a PS4 instead but I've now changed my mind.
next-gen can just means enhancements not a complete change on policies...
Why are they ten pound more?
what if the day one update is changing all their DRM policies back to normal.
Why are people calling titan fall an exclusive if it's on pc?
1. There will be uproar and 2. You could just not download the patch or un-install it if you already downloaded it.
ive had xbox and xbox 360 since day one on both consoles and have built a large freinds base some of whom ive known longer then IRL friends plus ive built up a resonable gamer score so ye i had pre ordered my xboxone prior to the Uturn and i wanted there to be no preowned games and always drm cus look at steam and there sales we would of had those too down the line but not anymore
Why?
They said game prices will stay the same as the previous generation.
That's my worry, my internet is fine but can go out for a while, If they are planning to put DRM in the console again then I'm not buying it, I would get a decent gaming PC but it's too expensive and PS4 seems to be my option right now.
I'm one of those that are still loyal to Microsoft, and was from the start of all this controversy, Microsoft fan boys for the win!
Okay while sending that message don't forget to ask Microsoft to push the check in to once every 2 weeks or once a month.
A brand new game on this gen in the UK usually cost's £40, $60 is around £40 so next gen games will cost the same as this gen games.
I was gonna get an xbox regardless bcos I preferred the old policies where u didn't have to keep swapping disks
Just wanna say tho i love you guys and your honesty.I think Microsoft could learn a thing or two off you guys.
hope u had a good E3
Funny to come back to this debate on digital games all these years later. I now suspect that a lot of these people who were pro these Xbox One DRM restrictions are the same ones who now complain that people buying digital games on sale are killing studios
The thing i would hate about DRM is my internet doesn't work my on my consoles so that is why if DRM is the future then i am staying in the past
wow first time for me to watch a video THAT new on youtube :O
I can understand MS wanting the console to ship with Kinnect, as they want developers to work on good Kinnect games, which they won't if no one has one. But saying that its a big risk they are taking including it and forcing up the price. Unless they show some really good games which use the Kinnect, people will begrudge having to buy it.
Do you all live together now too? :-)
yep
Why did they mention Assassin's Creed?
which saves you around £150
good point i did not think of that...Well fuck..:/
Some good points; outline the benefits of always online don't cram it down consumers throats.
I think the price is fine; if I bought a ps4 I would need to buy a PS eye to make it comparable to the Xbox and I would also need to buy PS+ straight away, where as I have xb gold paid till the middle of next year already. Plus a PS move if I decided to play enabled games.
If the DRM can be patched to not be on like they planed it can be reactivated the same way.
While digital does sound nice no way to but a larger hard drive is a point against for me. I can only assume next gen games will be even larger for storage then ones now.
They still require the kinect a device I never wanted on 360 and do not want next gen either.
Does not seem like good news to me for now I will stick with the 360.
i really want thw xbox one, everyone went crazy before agaimst he
I hate that they say the DRM all digital bull was ahead of its time
BOTH but ps4 gets lik a special bundle or something
WOW i actually tried to get that damn fly.. lol
GAME and used to buy at GameStation
i am one of those guys who is loyal enough to pay 80 more...and even as a hardcore gamer i wasnt particularily bothered about DRM as i have never traded a game in
probably good overall that they changed it though will make a huge difference to the more casual gamers
