Awesome tips. I grew up in Western NY in sight of Canada. I remember spitting on the sidewalk to see if it would freeze before it hit the ground. It froze at -6C. That meant the school busses were not coming. Now I'm in the desert southwest. It does freeze here and a couple time in the last couple decades it was negative Temps. My house is R60 roof and R30 walls, insulation costs less than heating over time. Your advice and building practices are helpful even in the lower states.

Such an important video. Given the government’s act of destruction by forcing people to go solar or electric in the name of C.C. You have the right philosophy by building it right the first time and cut the extended cost over all. Being as independent from government as possible seems the way to go.
Love your greenhouse insulation information. That was amazing. ❤❤❤❤

Very good video! Our heat pump is geothermal (not air-sourced), so it works at all temps. If you have the space to dig up your yard and run geothermal lines deep, It's a great bang for your buck when it comes to energy returned on energy invested. We also have a soft start on the compressor and central fan, so it's compatible with an off grid battery bank. Importantly, we run our two wood stoves most of the time as it's always a great, cheap source of heat grown on our land.

I know of people who did it in milder parts of Canada and it isn’t efficient or cost effective to run. Many projects installed here that are failures. That’s why I strayed away from geothermal heat pumps. Glad to hear it’s working for someone though. 👍

I’m going South for the winters these days, but even the Texas Hill Country was frozen for the last couple days. The coldest I saw here with the wind chill was -1 the other night. Thankfully it’s warming up today again.

Haven't been outside as cold as -50, but once in my holiday in Lapland, there was -40 to -43 for a week. We used to drive with snowmobile, we pulled paraglider in a moonlight on frozen lake and build sauna from the ice on a river. We put a stove on it and swim naked on the water, while we had to brake the ice every time we went in.
Usually it's not as cold in Finland as it is in Canada, but typically we have few days to several weeks between -20 to -30. For my experience, it's more like matter of what you do rather than matter of clothes to survive in cold. You can't go out and stand in your foot if it's below -30. Have a good boots, good gloves and check your cheeks, nose and ears frequently, you'll be fine if you just put your ass moving and do something.
The absolutely coldest where I have been was -110C. It was in a spa and I was in my swimming trunks. Not more than few minutes, and it wasn't as bad as you'd think.
By the way, I have electric heat pump, and it works well in -32, which we had this winter. It just don't give as much heat as in warmer temperatures and you need a model that is designed to work in cold. While it gets below -20, there's very little need for de-icing and if the pump handle it correctly, it can work with relatively good efficiency. Mine had COP about 2 in -32C, so it still produced twice as much as it consumed. I also have a fireplace and floor heating, but I made a test and switched them off for few coldest days. My house is very well insulated, and my heatpump didn't need more than half power to heat it up. That is about 3kw for 145m2 in -30C, but some of it comes from normal living.
We don't have cheap natural gas in Finland and we can't even get it on small houses, so electricity and heat pumps are really the best option. To play safe my it's better to get model that uses ground cirquit or heat well. They don't care about low temperatures since intake fluid typically stays above 0C.

Our community's dirty secret is that it is powered by diesel fuel, and I mean lots of it! Again we get subsidized to pay the same amount per kilowatt as every other BC Hydro customer but if we ever had to pay our fair share then everyone's hydro bill would go up 10x I've heard say. In the the cold parts of the US (which have very similar winters to the inhabited parts of Canada since nearly everyone in Canada lives right on the border) they just install backup heat. A heat pump that runs for 8 months of the year and kicks on a resistance heater (or a propane furnace) for 120 hours still saves so much money that it pays for itself. Heat pumps have the added benefit of keeping homes cool in the summer, which is maybe not a big deal for you but I'll guarantee you have older neighbors who are closer to death than they realize in the hottest parts of summer.

I think the thing that people forget about heat pumps in extremely cold climates is that you need a back up. Exactly what the video is preaching. Natural gas with a back up wood stove, double double windows and doors, etc.. Being prepared. I feel so bad for folks that just have natural gas. Heat pump with back up diesel and wood stove. I survived the vortex too.

    • @opcn18

@@debrakostiha6104 Many (most?) heat pumps come with a backup resistance heater. It's expensive to run but even in bitterly cold cities modern air source heatpumps can run almost the whole year and ground source heat pumps can run 365.
You do still need electricity, but a propane furnace needs electricity to run too.

Forgot to film that. Got lots of smaller
Potatoes. Biggest issue was keeping them wet. Because I have the space, I’ll be just doing them in our gardens more. If you don’t have the space, it would work well. Just lots more watering. ✌️

climate change will increase winter temperatures a lot more than the global average, especially in the northern hemisphere. Still, you will get crazy minimum temperatures, and the polar vortex will tend to shed a lot more and create more frequent intense cold events. This means climate change will actually make stuff colder or hotter in the winter.

    • @offgridwanabe
      @offgridwanabe 4 месяца назад

Well I have had one for 20 years it does all the heat and cooling I need it does run frequently at -40 but it is only a 3 ton unit to heat 1000 sq ft. Also it is the cheapest source of heat I have ever had even cheaper than wood. Now 8 years ago I added solar so it is almost utility free. Many people do not believe and that is ok with me as only me has to not pay the big bills. @@ArkopiaRUclips

Maybe ground water is not warm enough in the north it needs 3 degrees of heat to extract so has to be 36 f at least to use raw water but they also use antifreeze in close loop. my water is 100 feet down so it is about 46f in the winter. @@ArkopiaRUclips
