I'll never forget the moment. It was summer, 1984 in Frankfurt, Germany. I was assigned temporary duty in the US Army after being in country barely 6 months. You must understand, I was not much more than a "dirt farmer's" kid, off a dairy farm having left the farm to carve my own path in the world... I remember being incredibly lonely, shy, insecure and longing for the music I'd listened to on the radio, in the back of a 1966 Chevy station wagon, while taking trips now and again to grandmother's house in the burbs. As a boy, those "elevator" pieces pierced my heart, haunted me, and little did I know that fate would come back to deal me a sweet hand, years later. Or, maybe it was the Creator reaching down to save me from a sordid path of a typical GI... While roaming around off duty on Rhine Main Airforce base that summer, I felt desperate and needed an outlet from the demands of being attached to a combat heavy unit - moving dirt with a bulldozer on construction sites... Ha ! I had just purchased a small powerful, pearl white "boom box", that I could easily store in my GI duffle bag and was pining to get music that would reach my soul - i didn't want to waste funds on the crooners of the day, that seemed to drown out the silence while living in a barracks with other GI's and their "suit-case sized" boom boxes... so, like a crazed starving destitute, I wandered meekly into the base exchange for the first time, stumbling into the music section. The store was a cavernous, well lit and we'll stocked plithera of all items troops needed to live on the economy there with their families assigned to Europe. I remember being overwhelmed... somehow I'd made my way into this HUGE display section of "cassettes", rows upon rows of music and I went straight away to the classical category. All I remember were the attractive and professionally made cassette cases of assorted performers and the umbelievable array of the many performers on display. And there she was - a middle aged handsome brunette, pictured on the cover of a Chopin concerto number 1, cassette. For some reason, "Chopin" struck a nerve deep in the recesses of my heart and memory, standing there in what felt like a sea of cassette music. She looked so beautiful - long, flowing dark hair, so poised and wore a confident smile and I thought, dahhhh - think I'll give Martha Argerich a whirl. So I bought a few of that music label's offerings and a few of, get this - "George Winston" cassettes - " Winter", "Fall", and I think one other... I still own them Like a crazed Dennis Hopper referee looking for then current NFL linebacker Bruce Smiths' shoe, I hurried back to a quite place, chucked my "6" double A's in the back and put Martha's Chopin in the boom box first... how do you explain ecstacy to someone who's never starved for nurishment ? I nearly began to weep as those powerful little speakers blasted away Chopins' concerto no. 1. Oh, how my soul did weep for joy at that moment. Something in me soared, was released and I felt - so far away from those cows, the fields stretching far off into the distance and the bucolic Ohio landscape, that I had just been ushered into a great chamber that possessed the most intimate melodies meant for me, thousands of miles away from all that was familiar. I'll never forget that summer, in the throws of becoming a young man, discovering not only wonderful Martha, but an entire vault of symphonic melodies that have haunted me to this day. Thanks for this posting ! and, - where would we be without poets like Martha, interpreting Chopin, Tykowski, N R Korsokov or the other tremendous composers of long, long ago... I think most certainly we'd still be religated & wandering the Highlands of a far off distant land, trudging through mud - herding sheep... So so greatful, the haunting continues, persists and beats unabated in my heart. Blessings
Hi David, thank you for sharing about your life journey. I too feel so grateful to be touched in my heart and soul with this Divine music while traveling through life's journey...
Wow, David! What an amazing expression of music transporting you out of yourself. I grew in a dusty, bleak place on the corner of the Navajo reservation, Winslow, Arizona. My piano teacher stopped me after I played one of my assignments and with tears in her eyes, took my hands, talked to me about the great gift God had given me, which at nine years of age, I only barely understood. My older sibling came home for summer break and among his things were some LP's. As "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" filled the room, I began to weep as some dry, arid place in my spirit was nourished for the first time. I often sat and for hours, played my own music but I became aware of greats like Montserrat, Southerland, Callas. I also sang and had a 4 1/2 octave range and would go over to the sanctuary of the church my father pastored and pretend I was singing opera. Music saved my life and kept me sane in an abusive situation, my safe place, my refuge and inner sanctuary. I did not become acquainted with the greats of the musical world until at college but I will never forget, even when I draw my last breath, the gifts I have named who became my friends, though we never met. I am almost 75 now, but I remember with unfettered gratitude, those who changed my life and Martha Argerich with her modest clothes and honest gray hair will always be a luminary who, as my friend continues to light my way through her amazing, extraordinary gift! Thank you for posting these musical treasures for everyone to enjoy, but particularly those of us no longer physically able to travel and hear such music. You fill our lives with such joy. Words are not enough.
You seems to be a writer as you described very well your feelings. Thanks for your history. My mother has that concerto in CD format. No that she is retired she enjoys it almost daily.
Martha Argerish est une pianiste (et une femme) sublime: subtilité des interprétations, puissance du clavier quand demandé... Que dire de plus qu’elle est admirable, de sa jeunesse à aujourd’hui, où elle brille ! J’aime Martha Argerish !
SY Kim: THANK YOU SO MUCH! What a wonderful collection for both those that know Marth and those than do not. We all know that Martha is Absolutely Fabulous! She is a Gift and a Treatsure. Marth we Love you!
She Plays with so Much passion..And Can play anything from memory..Martha will live in my Heart till I take my last Breath...Thank you Dearest Martha..🎼❤💘
An utterly unique personality and musician - that she still has the signature fiery enthusiasm without exaggerated body movements in her three-score-and-tenth year is extraordinary. The power she achieves from barely raising an arm above the keyboard seems impossible. And Daniel Barenboim, of similar age also performs his art without the ducking, diving and gurning common to some other conductors. One superb pianist enjoying the talent of another.
The greatest, newest virtuosi can come out of competitions, and Martha will always be a giant towering over them. Always! Unending virtuosity, always playing with ease, and at the fastest tempi, when necessary. This is a fantastic compilation of great passages. Just when you say her Tchaikovsky is the greatest, she plays Chopin E minor that leaves your mouth agape. When you start to say "well OF COURSE her romantic music is great", then she plays a stunning Beethoven II. We need to revisit the quote from beloved Oscar Levant , who said of Horowitz--applicable to Martha--" She ordered her octaves TO GO.....".
Браво ! Что бы ни играла Марта , всегда интересно слушать, и я начинаю любить композитора, который это написал. Это великий дар и труд и искренность . Спасибо Вам, Марта !
ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING! I admit I didn't know her, but it's never too late to appreciate the best piano player in the world, no contest! Thank you for sharing!
I have always been a big fan of Martha Argerich. The first time I heard her play, it was a radio program. I was a kid. I did not have a clue who the pianist was. The performance made me so excited. At the end of the program they announced the pianist. Big fan ever since.
Greatest musician of the 20th (now the 21st) century? This woman will be discussed and studied 200-300 years from now.... flawless and all from memory, now in her 80’s!

Fitting that Daniel Barenboim conducting final piece in this set. Both born in Buenos Aires in early 40's. Both gave concerts as children. Always have wondered if they knew each other or were friends. Two absolute geniuses.
They are friends since childhood. The two "prodigy" children were born in Buenos Aires in the 40s. They have maintained friendly and artistic contact throughout their lives.
I cannot find the words to describe Martha Argerich's playing. It is just fascinating. An incredible talent, with an amazing technique. Unfortunately she does not appear very often in Amsterdam, so never got the opportunity to hear her "live".
Your music has so much heart, soul and passion. Thank you so much for sharing your musical treasures with the world, without it the world would be a much poorer place.
Isn't the fluidity of her playing the piano truly amazing? I remember watching Horowitz on Sunday morning magazine. He was featured live for the entire show. Sat there in awe of the fluidity of his fingers and l believe he was 80 or so at the time. What a blessing it is to be able to witness such God given talent..👍. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you for dedicating your life to playing the piano and sharing it with the World. Happy New 2021🎹🎶
Genius is a word nowadays far too often applied to people unworthy of this distinction. Martha Argerich is the real stuff, an absolute genius at the piano. She transports you with every note she plays, slow of fast. I feel so lucky that she has been part of my musical life ever since I was a young man in Geneva, Switzerland, and she was a young woman then married to the director of the Geneva University choir Chen Liang-Sheng.

I’ve been listening to and watching this lady since the early sixties. A phenomenal musician. Even by the standard of prodigies and virtuosi she is something else.
Thank you so much for posting! For some unprivileged people, who had never the chance of listening her live, these videos are our only window to music paradise!
I became a fan when I realised her Tchaikovsky 1st piano concerto performance made me hear things I didn't even know were there. Such a unique take, a soul born for Chopin and Liszt, such joy in playing... And her beauty didn't even flinch with age. What's not to love?
Im totally INSPIRED and utterly *demotivated!!!* No matter how many scales, runs, chord progressions I could ever do, it won't bring me nearly close to Martha. AND she isn't just a technical master, but she invokes emotion so suited to ever piece. I guess we have always got to have a target, a barr or, a maestro to look up to. Martha dwells amongst those gods and goddesses. What I wouldn't pay for a single private tutor class with her. 😃🙏🏼
Thank you so VERY much for this wonderful tribute to a most wonderful, gifted musician. Once in a lifetime. I had the pleasure of seeing her play with the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra...the Rachmaninoff 3rd, over 50 years ago. I wish I had known then I was watching what would be a legend. She played like one. Beautiful job with this compilation. Ive seen many of these performances. The Shostakovich makes me smile, remembering how she put that fine trumpet player to the test BIG time.

I still own them
Like a crazed Dennis Hopper referee looking for then current NFL linebacker Bruce Smiths' shoe, I hurried back to a quite place, chucked my "6" double A's in the back and put Martha's Chopin in the boom box first... how do you explain ecstacy to someone who's never starved for nurishment ?
Blessings
Thank you for your heartfelt words.
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story...
The Goddess of the Piano. !!!
Martha Argerich is a wonderful person and a wonderful pianist.
An excellent pianist.Thank you.God bless you
Just brilliant ! No posturing,face pulling,just brilliant technique,no comparison to today's artists,no more can be said.Rene
The only explanation I have for such talent is that she definetely has electricity on her hands and a platinum brain. Martha is incredible.
Martha es parte de esos fenómenos que la Naturaleza nos regala...a nosotros que tan poco te cuidamos Madre Natura!
Obdulio Menghi
Sublime interpretation by Martha Argerich whom I had the pleasure of meeting, a joy of a woman.
Kivételes élmény így "folyamatában" látni ezt a kivételes tehetséget, már a "ks" Martában benne volt A NAGY MŰVÉSZ , a manír nélküli, de boszorkányos gesztusok, örülök, hogy láthattam..
The composer's would be honored by her playing their music.
I was born in 1965, but in 1980 I began listening to classical music and discovered for my self the beauty of Martha Argerich playing, just beautiful.
70 years.... repeat with me... 70 years.... she has the power. My god.

The Grande Dame of the piano.
Cu adevărat o mare doamnă a pianului! Interpretarea Marthei Argerich, te transpune în sferele celeste, este o permanenta încântare,o permanenta bucurie!!!
You create breath taking joy! Thank you charming and unbelievable Martha! We are blessed to live with you at the same time.
Martha Argerich has a symbiotic relationship with the piano! Remarkable!
Thanks. My favorite 20th century pianist.
We need to revisit the quote from beloved Oscar Levant , who said of Horowitz--applicable to Martha--"
She ordered her octaves TO GO.....".
Martha Argerich ... she is really, a pride, an honor, that she was born in Argentina, I love her since I heard her
Браво ! Что бы ни играла Марта , всегда интересно слушать, и я начинаю любить композитора, который это написал. Это великий дар и труд и искренность . Спасибо Вам, Марта !
¡PRODIGIOSA! ¡ILUMINADA ! GENIAL.. FALTAN PALABRAS PARA DEFINIR SUS INTERPRETACIONES LLENAS DE SENSIBILIDAD ESCUCHARLA. ES UNA DELICIA.
Feliz Cumpleaños, querida Dama...y una vez mas...BRAVO!
There are many wizzards of the piano with dazzling technique. But there is only one magician with that technique: Marta Argerich.
Nope, nope, nope! Listen to the Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D Minor played by the divine Helene Grimaud:

The woman, the artist, the legend! The joy.
ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING! I admit I didn't know her, but it's never too late to appreciate the best piano player in the world, no contest! Thank you for sharing!
The greatest living pianist
My beautiful Godess of the piano
She’s a master
Incredible to watch and listen
I sit here, listening to and viewing this, trying to think of something profound to say about Martha Argerich. I’ve ended up laughing at myself.

One of the greatest pianist of our time, for sure!
I have always been a big fan of Martha Argerich. The first time I heard her play, it was a radio program. I was a kid. I did not have a clue who the pianist was. The performance made me so excited. At the end of the program they announced the pianist. Big fan ever since.
Grandiosa Marta. Tecnica divina, interpretazione intensa, ma sempre sobria e gradevolissima.
Greatest musician of the 20th (now the 21st) century? This woman will be discussed and studied 200-300 years from now.... flawless and all from memory, now in her 80’s!
Come on! Not True! Argerich never was the greatest! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the love of beautiful colorful piano sound! More colorful beautiful piano sound than Argerich=Wilhelm Kempff Emil Gilels Radu Lupu Artur Rubinstein Vladimir Ashkenazy Grigory Sokolov! More genius than Argerich=Sviatoslav Richter Solomon Cutner Grigory Sokolov Maurizio Pollini Stanislav Bunin Maria Grinberg Murray Perahia Alexei Lubimov Dinu Lipatti Stanislav Igolinsky! More powerful louder than Argerich=Mikhail Pletnev! The Second Loudest ever was Lazar Berman! The 3rd Loudest was Erwin Nyiregyhazi! Beethoven wanted louder instruments piano fortes! Horowitz his technique attack better than Argerich's technique! Argerich is only one of the greatest! Argerich not the best genius! Argerich not the best piano sound! Argerich not the most powerful!!
Martha Argerich is truly a phenomenon! I can't believe I just found out about her recently.
MARTHA ! UM FENÔMENO DA MÚSICA CLÁSSICA! INCRÍVEL APRESENTAÇÃO @ BRAVO ! BRAVO! BRAVO!
Thank you for putting this together. An absolutely amazing woman.
Thank you for dedicating your life to playing the piano and sharing it with the World. Happy New 2021🎹🎶
Quel travail en amont ! Mais son jeu tellement fluide et naturel nous fait oublier ce paramètre! Merci pour cette évocation! Didier
amazing strength and skill ..and talent?? +oh yah , love for great music and the joy of playing!!!
She really is insanely WONDERFUL!!! LOVE the dress (or blouse) she's wearing playing Prokofiev 3rd Concerto !!!
Rimango sempre estasiato a sentire questa straordinaria artista grazie Martha
Awesome! I believe Martha is among the very greatest pianists that have ever lived.
Not True! Come on! Dimitri Bashkirov her teacher Anastasia Virsaladze teach saying to Bashkirov the most important lesson is the love of beautiful colorful piano sound! The truth is that Argerich only One of the Greatest!
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS VIDEO ..ELEVEN MINUTES OF PLEASURE AND WONDER !
My absolute pleasure!
To hear her live three times are 3 all-time lifelong highs. Thanks for posting.
The incredible Queen Martha! Thank you for uploading the video.
she is transcendent. fire and precision. a great artist. thanks so much for posting.
Ela é extraordinária. I love her
Thank you. She is marvelous.
Im totally INSPIRED and utterly *demotivated!!!*
No matter how many scales, runs, chord progressions I could ever do, it won't bring me nearly close to Martha. AND she isn't just a technical master, but she invokes emotion so suited to ever piece.
I guess we have always got to have a target, a barr or, a maestro to look up to. Martha dwells amongst those gods and goddesses. What I wouldn't pay for a single private tutor class with her. 😃🙏🏼
hello, may I know your facebook name?
@@williamwong8386 excuse my ignorance. But who are you? Im happy to give you my email address?
Great video! It's touching to see her age so beautifully. Nice choice ending with the Liszt, with Barenboim as conductor. Thanks for making this!
A big thank you.
Geniuses are few, Martha is among them, the immortals.
I've always loved her. There are many amazing pianists but she's one of my favorites.
Thank you!!! Martha is nothing short of amazing. Saw her once at Walt Disney Concert Hall - absolutely blew me away! There is no one like her
Absolutely fantastic... just wow!
Fantástica Martha! Muito Obrigada! Beijo fraterno dos Gaúchos (Sul do Brasil 🇧🇷).
MARTA ARGERICH IS GENIUS AND UNIQUE PIANIST BRAVO!!!
An outstanding pianists. Outstanding!
è la più grande in assoluto nessuno ha fatto più di Lei!!!!!QUEEN Martha!!God bless you!
