    Once again, good information, thank you. Every year in March FB groups are buzzing about cutting Macrophylla Hydrangeas. I always thought, OK yes, cut down the dead stems sticking up above the green new growth. Guess what, no flowers ever. This year I decided not to touch it and all those dead looking stems have buds and small leaves sprouting so maybe this year I will get blooms!

    • @youbetcha108
      @youbetcha108 7 месяцев назад +1

      Same here. I was told to prune mopheads after blooms fade late summer. I have done that with successful bloom the next year. But the best blooms I had were when I did not prune at all.

    Birds and landscaping for, is my quest! 🥰 I've yet to see a bluebird however and would love! It helps living in a wooded area, for the abundance of birds there are for starters. I do buy a ball to hang of nest building material at my local bird store. It gets used! I put out 2 bird houses, separated in distance. Wrens in tree near my window, which they take advantage of. The Finch feeder which is always utilized at my window, is in proximity, but neither bird seems to mind the other! Love my Cardinals, and always a beautiful sight to see in the winter. My birds have known for yrs where to come, and are comfortable with me as well. I just ❤ it!!!!! Mid April is my time to put out Hummingbird feeders. I also plant my deck with plants for them, specifically! They always come by to visit several times, throughout the day. That is truly a sweet treat, and they come right up to me as well. I love the Springtime, and those summer nights, as the sun is setting. The glow of the garden is highlighted, and everything is Happy as can be!! 🌱🌳🐦🌿🌞🍀🙌 .. ok, my first chapter is finished 😄

    I’ve found that even reputable companies “scam” to a much lesser extent. I will get plant catalogs in the mail and the color saturation is turned up to 1,000 making it appear that the plants are much more colorful than they are. I find it to be such a turnoff. My rule of thumb is that if I have never seen it growing successfully in my area, it’s probably too good to be true!

    • @pwcolorchoice

      Ugh, yes I have seen that before as well and it's frustrating! Our job is to show the plant as it truly is and set people up for success, not to give unrealistic expectations.

    Oh man, birdman's segment reminded me of these little Carolina wrens we used to get every year on our back patio! Forget "place that you don't use much", these guys went straight for our green hanging basket filled with bug spray and sunscreen! Made a home right next to the most high-traffic area of the backyard, right above the trash cans filled with cigarette stubs. Carolina wrens really are just incredibly gregarious creatures, so full of personality and drama. I have several pictures and even videos of them looking after their kids in that basket! They were also checking out our plastic watering cans and made a fake/start nest in the garage toolbox.
    Unfortunately, our hanging basket broke a few years ago and we haven't replaced it, so we haven't had any more wren nests in the yard. I can find hanging baskets, but even with all the shade and water the place it used to hang gets, all the baskets I can find are dark-colored, and that's a recipe for the worst kind of fried eggs in our climate. Our new balcony isn't even that darkly-colored and we're thinking of covering the whole thing in stark white shelf liner just to keep the heat off. It's only late April and it can already sear the bottom of your feet off on hot days!
    Anyway, I have a painting of a Carolina wren on my wall from a local artist to celebrate and remember all the fun our Carolina wrens brought us over the years! We still see many Carolina wrens around, alongside Carolina chickadees, but it's a very different experience to see them raise kids up close.
    And Stacey -- you reminded me that I found a red-bellied woodpecker nest in the wood last year! I need to go check on it again and see if anyone new's taken up residence this year. And I'm excited to see if the screech owl in the owl box in the neighbor's front yard has found a partner this season...

      @pwcolorchoice  6 месяцев назад

      Aww! Your passion and enthusiasm for birds is very admirable 🥰Wrens have such fun personalities and can be so entertaining to watch them!
      I love screech owls! They're so little and cute, though their vocals are a different story 😂

      @@pwcolorchoice Screech owls in my neck of the woods don't screech, actually! Not when they're not being attacked or assaulted, at least. I get to hear a gorgeous little tremolo song instead! Consider looking it up and listening to it -- not a "screech" at all.
      Also, I got into gardening through birding! My original intentions were just to set up our balcony as a birdwatching place with water and food and a few plants this February...now there's almost no room to see the birds because there are so many plants! Haha!

    I always look for a scientific name so I can research the plant. They do not tell you that name bc then you will know what it is where it will grow etc. you can’t go by how the leaves look or even the flowers but I do use those features as a clue where no scientific name is provided. Local nurseries are the best sources for plants bc they sell what grows for the current weather. I planted violas and pansies here in 7 a New York and we had low temps in the 20’s several nights. Yet they survived that cold. But I knew they would bc the nursery I bought them at would not sell them if they didn’t. Happy Easter!!!🐇💐

    I’m curious about the bird house placement. Why is it not good to put them on our house? I thought one placement idea was under an overhang to help keep it dry? Isn’t that a good idea after all? And I’ve read that’s it’s best to have the door facing east or south, but does it really matter much in a small backyard?

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  7 месяцев назад +1

      Great question! The placement of a birdhouse will be dependent on the type of house you're using and the type of bird you want to attract. Some prefer more open habitats, like fields, while some are more adapted to urban environments - here is a helpful article I found about birdhouse placements, nestwatch.org/learn/all-about-birdhouses/nest-box-placement/

    Is it ok to to use nails in trees, doesn't the create rust and may damage the tree? also how do you keep birds out of hanging basket ?

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  7 месяцев назад +1

      Nails can wound trees as they break through the protective barrier of the bark, though typically that damage is minimal. As for keeping birds out of hanging baskets, some people use sound deterrents (wind chimes, or things like that), other than that you can physically remove the nest. I'm not recommending adding any sort of physical barrier as you don't want to damage or limit plant growth!

  • @emkn1479

    I have a question on how to PREVENT a robin from building a nest in the fencing/arbor at our garden entrance. It happens every year, and since we’re in and out of the garden so often, the mama robin gets upset and eventually tries to dive-bomb us. There are plenty of areas for the birds, as we live in a rural area, but this one spot seems to be an inconvenient favorite.

    • @emkn1479
      @emkn1479 7 месяцев назад

      On the other hand we’re very happy to have bluebirds nesting in a couple of boxes my husband made ☺️ Those wrens though 😂 they try to nest in the most inopportune places and are they LOUD! But they’re also super cute and full of personality.

    • @pwcolorchoice
      @pwcolorchoice  7 месяцев назад +1

      Besides physically removing the nest when she makes it (and if she re-makes it, removing it after), the other methods people use are sound deterrents, like windchimes, though that could also scare away other birds that you enjoy having around. Some people will create physical barriers to prevent nesting in an area.
