  • The Mora Companion Heavy Duty is a more robust version of the popular Mora Companion knife. Still just as razor sharp and solid as the standard version, just a full 1/8" thick with a slightly bigger handle.

    I was torn between the $180 Ka-Bar BK2 and the $18 Mora Companion HD. The choice fell on Mora, then I happily drank my saved $162 with joy that I had bought such a good knife, so cheap.

    Agreed. Had the regular Mora for 5 or 6 years and it never let me down. I always smile when a friend joins us with an expensive knife he will carry for field work and then not want to get it dirty or scratched. A good tool should be used, and like you stated in this review...not abused in a Macho way that exceeds its design. Thanks Bryan. Good stuff as always.

      John Hufnagel Thanks John. I like Mora knives a lot. Don't get me wrong, I have some more expensive knives on my wish list too but when I get one it will get used. I am really close to pulling the trigger on an Andy Tran designed Tahoma Field Knife from TOPS. I just need a little more in my piggy bank and I'll be there ;-)

    Having bigger hands myself I love this knife, I use my BK2 for cleaning game, splitting bone, occasional wood splitting and my mora HD is my go to knife for finer gutting, skinning, whittling etc, easily among my favorite knives of all time.

    Your channel has now become the final authority before I spend hard earned money on a new knife. Your testing is honest and straightforward. You remind so much of my late grandpa I still got his edc knife an Iroquois 4 blade slip joint Ill get it refinished one day other than the missing part of a blade that snapped off. The older I get the more I want a traditional basic knife. Thank you for your channel your a gem.

    Another fun video Brian! You are by far one of my most favorite outdoor gear reviewers on RUclips. You're very entertaining to watch and have some good common dude input. From the survival on purpose fans- we would love to see some more skill based/camping type videos. Seems like all gear guys on RUclips are doing more and more home shopping network/QVC type videos. We appreciate the time you take out of your everyday life to make these videos for is on the web, but we also like to see people in action, using skills so we can compare and maybe pick up some tips and good ideas here and there. Thanks again for all of your hard work and putting yourself out there for us fans and trolls alike!

    I wanted to thank you for this August video marathon! I always enjoy your vids and have learned a lot from them, but being able to come home to a fresh video everyday is just outstanding! I appreciate the time and work that has gone into these and unfortunately, it is causing the month of August to just fly by...day 21 already! I have had a lot of fun watching these on a daily basis and thank you, again, sir!

    Guys, I got this knife two days ago. Yesterday I climbed a big mountain behind my house and this knife performed FANTASTICALLY. My area is practically jungle but when the location doesn't necessitate unsheathing my machete, the mora does the job of cutting ivy, small saplings, etc. As well as taking cuttings for doing tree grafts if you're into growing trees for nuts and fruits. The blade comes sharp enough to shave with - seriously, I climbed a mountain, shaved with this knife right out of the package using a Suunto MC2-G compass mirror and no water or shaving cream and am none the worse for wear.
    I am unbelievably happy with my purchase, the sheath is of fantastic quality - the only small gripe I have is that the plastic belt clip looks like it could get weak in the future and break at the hinge point, but for now it works fine. I do wish the knife could be drawn from the sheath a little bit more easily from the fully locked position as it tends to pull the whole sheath off even when wearing a tactical belt rather than unsheath the knife.
    For those using this knife in a self defense situation I'd recommend tying down the sheath to your belt with a cord or even just using a normal leather sheath instead. The provided sheath is fantastic for normal purposes but for speed draws the grip is so strong it makes a fast draw a little dangerous and you worry a bit if the sheath is just gonna come off your belt.
    Long story short. This is a fantastic knife. But take care of it. It's not stainless. When you're done with it, clean it with alcohol, hone it on some leather, then give it a bit of light oil before resheathing it or putting it in storage, and don't put it in a dirty sheath or it will rust and dull over time. Great knife, unbelievable value. Very satisfied.

    I bought a Pro S knife for 12 dollars about a year ago and I've beaten the crap out of it and it still works just fine. I chipped it a few months ago from batoning through a knotty piece of wood (I'm still new to knives and bushcrafting), but it was fairly easy to work them out with an Arkansas stone. Other than that I haven't had any complaints and I'm planning on getting this one soon.

    I really like your channel, and your reviews. I watched this video and it pushed me off the fence, as it were. I found myself in Cabelas, and was in there to buy a knife. I don't have a very thick wallet, so I had to be choosy. I had picked up a SOG fixed blade knife, when I saw the Morakniv Companion heavy duty. I saw it was carbon steel...I thought Moras were exclusively stainless steel...I don't do stainless steel. The price was fantastic, and I had seen this video of yours and the other video of the next down model of the Mora. You proved to me these were very rugged knives...so I am now the proud owner of my first Mora.
    The more I examine it , the more I like it. I think this will be the type of knife I will give my 11 year old son for his first knife...which means I have to go buy another one. Things I like: Good steel, good grind geometry, light weight, very rugged, mine has the dayglo orange sheath and handles, won't lose it,the PRICE, it's Scandinavian, so am I ! HAha!

    Good video. Batoning is over stressed and over emphasized in the camp / survival world but it does test the brittleness of the blade and the sturdiness of the 3/4 tang and handle partnership. Only cross cutting tests the edge as in splitting lengthwise places the work on the sides of the knife. The Mora HD is an excellent knife and I own two of them. Again, nice vid.

    got mine a couple I month's ago and have took it with me over every other secondary knife I own (not that it has to be a secondary) because it's so easy to carve with. I just love it, it's so Sharp and even when it dulls a bit just stropping it on my belt brings back the razor edge. highly recommend this knife, you won't find a better knife for the price it costs lol plus I take this over knives that have cost me in excess of £100. buy one, you won't regret it.

    unlike the Basic and Pro series the Companion sheath holds the kniife on the left and the right, not top and bottom. so after heating the sheath up you should apply pressure from the left and the right, not from top and bottom. described perspective is from looking into the sheath so you can see the drain hole from the inside.

    Got put off Mora's for a while, first one I got was a Robust Pro, had trouble with the company that supplied it, it came with nicks in the blade and has just been one of those knives you know will never be entirely right, as it was my first Mora, I thought that's what they're like. Got a normal Companion from a great store and never had a minutes problem with it, will probably get this Companion HD and retire the Robust Pro. A good, no nonsense vid!!

    Bryan,
    Have you tried the spine with flint? My Mora 2/0 and wood carving 106 will ignite char with flint.
    By the way, in addition to scraping a ferro and scraping wood shavings, a squared spine helps with separating the fibers out for cordage making and separating barks for tinder bundles and kinnickinnic. I find that wood scrapings ignite more easily with a ferro than curls.

    I don't know what your experience is but I have three moras: bushcraft orange, and two companion HD. after two years I have found all three blades to be weak and unreliable. after only feather sticking and carving wood they immediately lose their edge by either chipping or rolling...I have to pull out my sharpening tools to recover the edge each and every time. I realize these are cheap knives but because of almost zero edge retention in the field I can't rely upon these. I am in the wild anywhere from 3 to 4 nights at a time and I need something that won't lose its edge after the first 5 strokes of simple wood work. I have heard from more experienced mora users (10 year veterans) that mora doesn't produce the quality blades that they used to and now I can see why. I am going to sell all mine and pick up something more reliable. just my two cents. thanks for the video review. cheers mate.

    Got one recently. It covered with fuel coloured spots (kinda) after first use on hot (cooked) meat. Do you have any ideas what could that be?

    More obtuse grind is a great idea. Standard mora grind is seriously fragile and has to be tiptoed around. I imagine that affects the usual excellent useability on wood though.

    Say Heah Brian, I Axe Tap, Instead of baton in a piece of wood, I could basically take the small piece of wood and chop though it, but without the use of baton, But I do make sure my knives are robust enough to baton, I do enjoy batoning. But I can't get over how much I like my Mora 510, Infact I bought it because it was thinner than the older ones. I like wearing it as a neck carry and I got a chain, that bead kind that was attached to a Kydex sheath, I somehow had two sheath's and took the chain off and I now use it for my Mora 510 and it works great. I really didn't know you had a store either.

    Mora knives are always welcome for bushcrafting. You can get a lot of knife for less money. Have you seen the extra sheath for the Heavy Duty model? It has a attachment for other Companion sheaths. You can google it, try "Craftline Twin". Like always, good video.

    gotta say to this day, even though i've bought MUCH more expensive knives, the companion remains my favorite. No other blade glides through wood as easily, & scandi grind is so easy to sharpen. It's so light you don't even know its there.

    The carbon steel one might be awesome but I have the stainless version and I have to sharpen it every time I use it weather I cut up food or open boxes it was cheap I can’t complain too much but I have knives that were cheaper that can hold an edge longer than three uses

      if you spend a lot of time in wet environments I'd consider the stainless. If you want to be able to use your knife witih a hard rock to make sparks then go with carbon

    Guys help me out, I want to buy a knife for hiking and camp use, I am between mora bush black and a rat 5.
    I am new to Scandi grind, I have always loved Full flat. Is a mora as easy to touch up in the field and as useful as a full flat? Both knives being high carbon.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  8 лет назад +1

      +George N those are two pretty different knives. Both are decent. A lot of people think a Scandi grind is easier to sharpen because you just follow the existing flat angle it is pretty simple to do. I think it boils down to whatever one you like the best

    I love the fact that people get a $18.00 knife and then comment about the negative of the blade/sheath/whatever. It’s $18. Find yourself a purpose. I think these knives are great for there price point however, if I had to leave home and had to grab a knife to survive forever it would not be a mora. Good little knives but I wouldn’t put my life on it and depend on it. That’s all I have to say. Nice video sir.

    Make wooden wedge, using your knife, then only baton the knife into the wood then use wedge? It would be bad if knife gets stuck or broken...

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  7 лет назад

      Everybody keeps telling me about using a wooden wedge but I prefer to use my knife. I guess if you are talking about large diameter splitting it is different but how would you cut it into "splitable" lengths anyway?

    • @EattinThurs61
      @EattinThurs61 7 лет назад

      Survival On Purpose I use a special two handled knife for tinder. Just shave/split splints with it. If you go to Mora knives home page you can see the type I mean. It is very common and everyone with a woodstove in Sweden has one or a wallmounted one. Otherwise I use an axe. Sweden is far to the north so axes is the thing here so knives do not need to be so big.

    Say Heah, The difference between a Clipper and the Companion is the tang. On my vintage Mora 840 Clipper MG the tang is short but robust, But placing the hard plastic in strategic areas on the handle makes the knife pretty strong. The Companion has more of a longer slender tang. But I never seen a handle break in half so I'm pretty comfortable knowing my Mora Clipper for what I do with it will hold up just fine. Well that's my $00.02 on the difference between the Clipper and the Companion.,,.
