    This is a really great category of skis! My Bent 100s are a total hoot in almost all situations. Bob brings up a good point, in that some skis aren’t actually their advertised length. And a bigger skier looking for a long ski (or as in my case, looking for a ski considerably longer than anything in my quiver) could end up being really disappointed. True length may be worth mentioning in all your comparisons. You guys are always informative and entertaining.

      This specific Dynastar and the Elan Ripstick series are the ones that we discuss most often. Ripsticks measure about 1.5 cm short across the board. It seems like most other skis are pretty much true to stated length.

    Thanks for this! I am one of those people you referenced as getting down to the black ops 98 vs nordi unleashed 98 decision. NOT a park guy, but have had a couple pairs of twinnies and loved the ability to occasionally spin off cat tracks (etc) - and I'm all over the mountain out here in the west. Choosing the BOps for the damp/quiet ride and after 4+ decades of riding really engaging carving skis (also: demanding, all damn day), having something that's really intuitive to slip/slide/surf down the fall line - but that can handle some groomer carving - sounds like the ticket.

      I got the Black Ops as well. I was lucky enough to try them in Whitefish for 2 days, a beautiful, calm, and groomed day, the second being a heavy snow storm and lots of powder. The Black Ops were amazing for both days, and I would highly recommend them. They struck the perfect balance for me between playful and cushion while also being aggressive. I could either send it down the mountain or take my time, and the skis were fine with both.

    Gets a like simply for the tag: happy twin tip day Geoff 🙂 And its about time someone (Head) made a ski that's mid fat with twin tip and virtually zero rocker. For me a really good ski will have as long an effective edge as possible, be stiff enough to go at speed and hold the edge well which you get from stiffness and camber along the whole length of the effective edge, and be a solid twin tip. That is a one ski quiver, which is what will be most versatile. But I guess this is cause I am ex racer and freestyle so I like both aspects in my ski. And lots of folks these days do not have training, so can't handle the stiff cambered ski with a little less directional stability.

    Cool, I'm thinking that Armada EDollo is gonna end up in my ski bag, perhaps not this year, but next. I love power skis, there is a misconception a power ski requires a very strong person, I disagree, they require technically sound skiers. What they give back is excellent feedback and precise response to their limit, such ski beg the skier to push their limits, but you're unlikely to be limited by the ski's capabilities.

    Love these videos, keep them coming! Wanted to get your thoughts, I’m looking to upgrade from Line TW pro 2017s that I bought used when i first started a few years ago. Want to get the ARV94 but not a huge fan of the graphic this year. Should I just go for the 2024 BDOGs or get the 2023 ARV96s? Also open to other twin tip suggestions if you have any. I mostly ski east coast with about one west coast trip a year, 30% park, 50% on-piste, 20% off-piste.

      @SkiEssentials  7 месяцев назад

      Do you like the looks of the ARW 94 better because I do, and it's the same ski in the same lengths. Maybe worth a look? If not, then the ARV 96 is likely a better comparison than the BDog.

    Great video guys!! How do the new ARV 100s do as an all mountain ski on steeps / at speed? I don’t ski park but like the playfulness of Armadas. Would the 106 be a better option?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад +1

      Keep in mind that the 106 keeps the same ash/poplar construction as last year so it doesn't get the quickness upgrade that the 100, 94, and 88 get. That said, the 100 is still very sturdy on steeps at speed, it's just not like it used to be. This puts more difference between the new ARV build and the athlete driven Edollo which feels more like the ARV 106 in terms of weight and stability.

    been enjoying your content, guys, for a couple of years now, and i may have something to propose. it seems to me it would be reasonable to mention your recommendation on the binding option, since many skis on your wall are displayed without them. just mention it, shouldn’t be really a separate segment, so as not to stretch the timing of a comparison video even longer. your reviews and comparisons are a great source of information, and I tend to think that your insights on ski-binding combo would be beneficial for the folks watching

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      Pretty much all of our flat skis come with a paired binding on our website. Mostly, it's either a Marker Griffon or a Tyrollia Attack 14. Some Salomon Strives mixed in. Most of the skis we're reviewing are totally fine with any of these bindings in the 13-Din range.

    Hey guys, first of all big thanks for all those great and detailed videos, for me your ski tests are the best of them all!
    Im willing to buy my first skis after endless years of rentals and im a bit torn between the Armada ARV 94, 100 and the Prodigy 2.0.
    Id say im an indermediate, sporty dude in my mid twentys and i want a fun ski for the whole mountain ( im stated in europe and ride mainly in austria ).
    Im not really interested in the perfect carving ski, although i spent not too little time on groomers with my family, i see myself more in the off piste and search for every little bump on groomers to pop off of and i want to do my first steps in the park/freestyle world.
    My last rental ski i had by far the most fun with was a Bent Chetler 100 but i felt it chatter and a little too loose on harder snow/icy snow.
    Which of those 3 skis ( ARV 94/100, Prodigy 2 ) would you guys recommend for that usage? Im also open for other suggestions :) thanks alot and keep up the great work!

      I think if you loved the Bent 100 other than a bit of rattle, the ARV 100 will be a nice move in the upward trajectory. Still light and agile, but with a bit more pop and power.

    I used to ride the armada TST and beat them up pretty bad. Eventually decided that a switch to something stiffer would be good, so I bought Head Kore 93s a couple years back. Both are awesome, and I am thinking about grabbing a pair of something more playful. The Kores are awesome, but sometimes are just a bit too stiff. Armada has always caught my eye (ARV 100), but what are your thoughts on Moment Skis? The Wildcat and Deathwish look like good alternatives as well.

    Great review as always! As someone who is more into the freeride and trees category, with some moguls and groomers on low snow days, would you say that the unleashed 98 is a better replacement for my aging enforcer 104 free, or should I look into the 108 or potentially another ski altogether. I loved the 104's, but did find them a tad heavy and bulky on long days. Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад +1

      I'd say a move to the 98 is a step in the right direction. The 108 gets a bit bulky while the 98 is more agile and maneuverable while keeping the playfulness at the forefront of the conversation.

    Hi guys, great detailed reviews as always. I’m 180 pounds 5’11 and looking for a replacement for my blizzard peacemaker 172 that is similar playful but a bit stiffer and longer for more stability at speed in wider steeper terrain. Do you have any suggestions? Ived skied these skis a bit short as the kids have had me in the tight trees and bumps ALL THE TIME but they are older now so venturing wider. Any tips on what length skis you ride relative to your heights would be great too. Cheers.

      I'd check out the Nordica Unleashed 98. There's a partial sheet of metal in here, and that allows for greater dampness and edge grip while keeping the ski playful and fun. Black Crows Camox and the Rossignol Blackops 98 make good sense here as well, with similar shapes to the Unleashed, but without the metal laminate. I'd look to the high 170's topping out at 180.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      It's different. Not really better or worse. The Enforcer has longer rocker but the Unleashed has more camber and splay. As a result, the Enforcer delivers smoother performance while the Unleashed is bouncier. Unleashed is less demanding, so if you ever felt that the Enforcer was kind of a handful due to the weight, the Unleashed helps out in that arena for sure.

      The Ripstick makes good sense here if you're looking for a lighter and more mobile ski. It's incredibly smooth and rewarding and carves quite well on groomers, too! Secret is safe here, although it is the internet.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      Generally something in the mid 80's. We both have Stockli Montero's, Jeff with the AX at 80 mm underfoot and me with the AR at 84. With no new/soft snow, those are about as sweet as it gets when it comes to smoothness and carving power. If you're looking to keep things interesting in an off-trail situation, the mid-90's skis have a lot to offer, so Black Crows Serpo, Head Kore 93, and Armada Declivity 92 Ti are right up there with some of the favorites in that situation.

      I would love to compare the Koala to my Wailers.. They both have the foundation construction.. It sounds like the big difference is the turn radius... It looks like the Koala has a longer turn radius and my guess is that the tails aren't catchy like my Wailers.. The stuff that I complain about my Wailers is that they are turny and catchy and that doesn't seam like that is the case with Koala.. The other side of it would be that if there are tons of people and you have to do a lot of turning then Wailer.. I would say my Wailers are intuitive as well and they like to do their own thing..

    • @darinsmith2458
      @darinsmith2458 8 месяцев назад

      I would like to compare that Unleashed to my Enforcer 104 Free.. My guess is that they have a lot of similar qualities.. When you guys say that the skis need a lot of skier input I would say that is true of my Enforcers but they aren't reactionary like other skis.. There is something to be said about taking a catwalk after a grueling run and the skis don't take off.. No snow snakes are going to get me;)

      I know Maverick TI is not a twin tip but how would you compare the Unleashed 98 to either the 95 or the 100? It seams like they both have metal but they are also reactionary and not as stable as Enforcers or Stormriders..

    • @darinsmith2458

      This category I am out of it and I would imagine that I am even more out of it with the narrower park skis.. As a former racer I never heard about driving the tip.. I would say that I am a traditional skier since I learned on straight skis.. I think all of the skis that I have I need to drive the tip.. I have mentioned this before as far as it is nice to be on skis that have the more traditional shape so that they don't get all catchy but I remember those snow snakes catching me on catwalks with straight skis.. I can also appreciate turny skis when the hill is crowded..

    Guys, thanks a lot for the review... We can learn a lot from you about those skis even if we sadly can't really test them all out on snow!
    That said, I'm pretty undecided between arv 100 chronics 101 and reckoner 102.
    I'm 172cm tall and weight about 65kg, i really like soft playful skis (coming from Blends) but i'm searching for someting that I can rip all the mountain and play around even in the park.
    Due to your experience which one do you recomend?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 месяцев назад +1

      If you like soft and playful skis, the Reckoner is more similar to the Blend. The Chronic 101 has quite flexible tips and tails but is sturdier underfoot, and this makes it a fantastic contender since you like to rip around the mountain. I think the overall performance on the Chronic 101 is a lot more interesting and exciting than the Reckoner.

Any idea (im skiing in the french alps) ? Thanks 🙏

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 месяца назад +1

      I'd say the Rustler 9 is your best bet here, especially if you're bringing carving into the equation. Very versatile and fun, but also quite impressive in a carved turn. The M-Free is in second, but a bit farther away.

  • @matt7479
    @matt7479 6 месяцев назад

    Can you compare the reckoner to the playmaker? I want something that skis similarly to the Elan, especially the low weight surfy feel, but I want to try something different since they broke on me. Was leaning M-Free or chronic, but the reckoners sound pretty similar at a better price point. Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 месяцев назад +1

      I'm pretty surprised at how pricey the M-Free is, but it is a very smooth and quality-oriented ski.
      Regarding Reckoner vs. Playmaker, the K2 is very flexible fore/aft but actually has some good torsional stiffness. This makes it a deceptively good carver and adept at making clean and round turns. You will find a lot of similarities here, but the Elan does have better softer snow performance, and I'd say the same about the Chronic and the Dynastar. If you are looking for a good price point, it's tough to argue with the K2.

    Could you explain the differences between the unleashed and rustler 9’s please?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад +1

      They're almost more similar than the Unleashed/Blackops comparison, especially now that the Rustler is wider, with more metal along the sides, and more splay in the tips and tails. There's still a longer rocker profile in the Rustler while the Unleashed still sticks to a traditional twin tip shape and style, just with the metal laminate. As such, you get more predictable and smoother on-trail performance from the Nordica while the Rustler is easier to swivel and drift in tighter spaces and softer snow.

    For a person who is 85kg and 1.89 m tall, would you rather recommend the armada arv 100 or the line chronic 101, having in mind that I enjoy both park and deepsnow/freeride but also stability on the slopes while carving.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  6 месяцев назад

      The main difference is in how/where the ski flexes. The ARV is more consistent when it comes to flex from tip to tail while the Chronic is more flexible in the tips and tails and then is pretty stuff and solid underfoot. The Chronic was one of the more impressive skis I got on last year, as it held up to its end of the bargain from a freeride perspective. The ARV still feels like it leans more to the park side of the spectrum.

    You guys truly provide a valuable service especially when you consider that we can’t demo every ski ourselves. If you were to put the Nordica unleashed in the normal 100mm all mountain comparison would it then be the most turny smeery pivoty ski on the wall? I’ve been on bonafide’s (6’1 215lbs) since 2014 and would like to add something a little more skiable in the bumps/glades. Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      Yes, I'd put it that way, but it still has an incredible carving performance. It bends, but is still very damp and stable. It's certainly more turny and smeary than the Bonafide. I'd go for that in the 180.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      You're not wrong. The spoonier shape carries through between the models especially in the tips and tails. In addition, the narrower Playmaker is more agile and has more energy due to the carbon. The Elan still feels like a freestyle oriented twin tip while the Atris has more of a freeride feel to it with the beefier build and smoother overall character.

    I have kinda a big problem. I can't decide between the unleashed 98, the Camox, or the Black Ops 98.. I already have some Kastle 96ti HPs which I love, so I want a different kind of ski.
    I also want a ski that does well on Seirra cement / crazy ice and a ski I can ski slow.. Whomever I ski slow I get into trouble. of the three the unleashed 98, the Camox, or the Black Ops 98, which is best on icier side country and a ski that is not so demanding that you can ski at slower speeds. What'cha think? You guys are awesome!!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 месяца назад

      I don't think this is a big problem--you are in the right zone for sure. Of these three, I do think the Unleashed has the most upside. With a mainly full metal laminate and a longer camber profile, the skis are grippy and stable. They turn great from tip to tail while remaining mobile and nimble in tough spots. The Camox and Blackops are very similar and they are a bit more slidy and surfy than the Unleashed for softer snow, but overall, the Nordica is a very impressive ski.

    hey guys, thanks a lot for the detailed video.
    I can't decide between the Faction Prodigy 2 or the Line Blend. I ride a lot of rails and at most medium jumps, no big ones. I would love to learn butter tricks as they are not possible with my Armada arv96 as it has too hard a flex. Which ski would you recommend? Is the flex similar between the two skis?
    Thanks in advance ;)

      The Prodigy is a nice middle ground between the hyper-flexible Blend and the more rigid ARV 96. If you're looking for the softest of soft for butters only, the Blend is unbeatable. For more of a mixed performance ski, I'd lean to the Prodigy.

    Love the vids but I’m having a really tough time deciding which ski to get after doing so much research. I ski half east coast and half west and I am a pretty agressive skiier that skis mainly off pist in the trees, chutes and all the hardest stuff the resort has to offer. I’ve been skiing bent 100s but they are now too small on me and I heard they don’t hold an edge well so what ski do you think would be perfect for me that has a little more edge grip and strain lining capability through chutes, but ski has that very quick turning of the bent 100 for the tight trees of the east?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      I'd look at the Blackops 98 for that effect. You're getting more grip and more power, and while it does come with some extra weight, they're still very maneuverable. I'd narrow focus to that ski and see how it feels.

      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      For an all-mountain ski, we were really impressed with the Chronic 101's ability to be both a strong on-trail ski as well as a playful freeride option. It's pretty sturdy and energetic underfoot while remaining fun and drifty in the tips and tails. Revolt has more of a quiet feel to it--not as much energy, but still a great floater in deeper snow and very predictable.

      @@alligator6651 Slightly sturdier, especially from a consistency standpoint in the ARV 100. They're not quite as flexible in the tips and tails as the Chronic, so it kind of depends what you're looking for. Overall, I'd say the ARV has a slightly higher ceiling than the Chronic.

    Just demoed the Playmaker 101 yesterday and as a heavy powerful skier I can confirm the 188 has the goods. High speed carving on a hard groomer was no trouble with it and you can feel it's agility too. The 180 was no where near as strong. And neither were the Playmaker 91's in either the 180 or 188. So if you are interested in what Jeff is saying about the Playmaker 101 and you are a big guy the Playmaker 101 in 188cm is totally viable. If you are debating between the 91 and 101, the 101's are definitely the stronger ski.

      The Mana is more similar in terms of build to the Rossignol--it just feels like a sturdy and quiet ski. The Unleashed has more pop and pep to it due to the camber, and the metal does keep a lot of grip. If you're more on the all-mountain side, the Unleashed is fantastically versatile and useful. If you lean to softer snow and more variable conditions and terrain, the Mana or the Rossignol make more sense.

    Hi guys I hope you can help me out. This review is right for me but still can't decide on which skis to get. I am looking for a playfull freeride ski. Around the width of 100. Skiing mainly in Europe, currently looking at the k2 reckoner 102, skied that in Whistler for quite some time. Really enjoyed the playfulness of it. But not too sure if I need a ski that 'does it all' more for the European groomers and more hard packed snow in the Alps. Do you have an advice for that playfull all mountain free ride ski. Not too park oriented but like to have fun around the slope and on natural features. The Dynaster M-Free 99, Bent Chetlers and Line Chronic all seem to hit the sweet spot more or less. I am thinking of slapping on a shift binding on it to use it for some Freetouring and freeriding in general, but also having fun around the slope when it doesn't snow that much including carving some beautiful turns from time to time. Looking for that really playfull character on the whole mountain, for the groomer days I have my alpine skis. Thanks a lot, hope you can help me out! I am 6 feet tall and around 165 lbs, and consider myself an advanced / expert skier. I have a feeling this might be a bit too much to ask for, but who knows :)

    hm, was my initial comment deleted? The BO98 and Menace/Splice is not the same ski. The flex pattern, mount point, sidecut and dimensions are all different, which a bare minimum of research would yield - as would the excellent infographics made by Endre Hals (of Evi skis, who codesigned the Ren with Hoji) the Norwegian illustrate if you Google it. Also, especially Bob often misrepresents constructions of different skis, either missing elements or naming the wrong ingredients. And "positive camber" as a term needs to be reconsidered - there is camber or reverse camber ;)

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  8 месяцев назад

      Hello! No, we don't really ever delete comments, unless it's purely inappropriate, which doesn't seem like the case here. So, not sure.
      Anyways, Jeff here, and thought I would give your thoughtful comment and equally thoughtful reply.
      First, you're right, and I could've raised that question or topic in a more accurate way. I'm well aware of their differences on paper, provided lengths, etc etc, but gosh, they're so darn similar, it's something I've been hung up on for a while. I probably should've phrased it "just how similar are these skis?" rather than "are they the same thing?" Obviously Dynastar and Rossignol are sister brands, sharing technology and materials and manufacturing processes, and the similarities of different models over time is interesting too.
      2014 Dynastar Slicer at 181 cm - 132/98/120 mm
      2017 Rossignol Slate at 181 cm - 130/97/120 mm
      2021 Dynastar Menace 98 at 181 cm - 132/98/120 mm
      2024 Rossignol Black Ops 98 at 182 cm - 131/98/121 mm
      So, like I said, there are obviously differences among those specs, and the provided lengths are different between some of them too, but I still can't get over the similarities having skied all of them over the years.
      In regards to your other comments, appreciate the feedback about accuracy. In these comparisons, if this is what you're referring to, we often skip over elements of construction to save some time.
      Lastly, you're more correct than incorrect about camber, that's for sure. Positive camber has never sounded weird to me because you here it in the car world, but I totally understand what you're saying and that it's not really the best way to describe the profile of a ski.
      There's my thoughtful reply to your thoughtful question! You're right, but the differences among those skis are so small, that it often has me wondering just how similar they are.
