    Bob, Jeff, first thing’s first> I felt so compelled to give feedback.
    The time and effort you and the team spend on testing, composing the wall, and providing your perspective on each product you put up there is not an easy task. You make it look effortless and is nothing short of impeccable! I find the video segments inserted for each and every ski in action while you’re explaining the ski is extremely value added.
    I spend hours on end watching and re-watching your reviews. The only thing I hate about your reviews is it results in me buying yet another set of skis!😉
    Outstanding job to Jeff, Bob, and the rest of the Skiessentials team for setting the bar in the industry! 👏👏 Having said that, will you be doing the next width category, maybe a 110-120?

      That's like the nicest comment we've ever gotten, and we will not look down on you for buying more skis--that's part of the fun! We'll be moving to the mid-90's for the next video, mainly based on what we have in stock at the moment, but we have a 110 and then a Powder ski video on the list as well. If you have any specific questions about a wider ski, please let us know!

    I will second the "go your own way" recommendation. Been trying to find a particular ski to fill my quiver and have noticed in demoing skis it doesn't really matter what the stats are, they can't really express its character until u ski them. And skis I enjoy are not what I thought I would on paper.

    Fascinating and hugely helpful comparison and review! Appreciate all the time you guys are putting into these. Helps people like me who don't have the mountain around the corner and are left doing desktop research a lot! Question I was hoping you could help with: I was put on a pair of Atomic Bent 100s in the Swiss Alps last week and was blown away by how manoeuvrable and versatile they were. Was a joy skiing them. Led me to do some research with the help of your videos for the purpose of buying a new pair of skis. Looking for width of 100-105, something versatile across the mountain and was hoping to keep the weight down (as I suspect one of the reasons I had such a good time on the Bents is its lightness). I ended up shortlisting the following 4: Atomic Bent 100 @ 188cm / Blizzard Hustle 10 @ 188cm / Nordica Enforcer Free 104 @ 186cm / Nordica Enforcer Unlimited 104 @186cm.
    (I'm 190cm tall.)
    Think these are all great skis (though the Bents are noticeably absent from most "best skis reviews") but any tips or insights as I zero in on the final choice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +4

      If you had a great time on the Bent, it's tough to talk you out of it. I'd say the Enforcer Free could get crossed off, especially if you're looking to keep the weight down and the maneuverability up. The Unlimited is awesome because it employs the same shape as the 104 Free but with more pop and less mass. Hustle has some bounce and grip to it as well, but I don't find it quite as engaging as the Unlimited. I'd narrow focus to Bent and Unlimited, with the Nordica being the better floater and carver of the two while Bent is more playful.

    Lol I put a pivot on a backland 107 a few years ago and people gave me shit for it. Really a great ski for powder and off piste here in Colorado. I do find it is a bit limited on really firm stuff, but if the snow is soft it will carve for days. It’s really fun to have a ski that’s light on your feet. It’s a fun experience. People who have never skied a backland give it a hard time, but anyone I I’ve met who has skied them knows how good they are. Also, my local mom and pop tuning and rental shop has decided to pick up a bunch of liberty origins as rental skis after I brought them in and the owner asked what I thought of them. She did a hand flex and gave it the seal of approval.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      We say it again and again: 1) There is no wrong way to go about this. Backland 107 with Pivot makes perfect sense to me, and I'm glad you had fun on it as well, and 2) We've seen some very high-level skiing done on the 107. If you find the limit of the ski, you are above a collegiate-racer level skier.

    Gents, excellent reviews. Cracking up at the Olukai hat on Bob. Sets the tone for the relaxed nature you guys always give off. I am going head first (pun intended) into backcountry this year and went with a really light setup so I'll let you know as a non backcountry skier how stable I feel on tech bindings. Keep the reviews coming. And, if you guys have time for reviewing tech bindings with regards to durability/reliability as well as skiability (vs mainly for uphill), I would appreciate your input/recommendations. Thx

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад

      HI Cam!
      Thanks for the feedback, and for uphill skiing and longer tours, light weight is the way to go. We've found that with tech/tour gear, there are as many opinions as skiers out there--very little agreement, it seems, but very strong feelings about certain gear. If you posed this question to a more popular A/T thread, you'll likely be pretty overwhelmed with the tech talk. We have to spend most of our time on the majority of stuff we sell, so we don't often have the resources to dive deeply into the A/T side of the spectrum. Personally, I've had plenty of success on my Marker Alpinist 12's, but if you google a review on those, you're going to see a storm of criticism versus a few happy skiers. Sorry I can't be of more help in this endeavor!

    Thank you for making these videos they are a huge help! I'm interested in your thoughts on how the "new type" skis you mentioned compare vs the metal skis. Specifically looking at the QST vs the Enforcer 104 free. Weight and shape seem pretty similar.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +5

      Hi Chris!
      It's interesting what they're doing these days, and a lot of it comes down to preference. I'm 6/2 225 and I prefer the carbon-powered skis like Head Kore, Enforcer Unlimited, and Scott Mission to the Enforcer Free, Bonafide, etc. I like the energy of the carbon over the dampness of the metal. It seems that you have to get the metallic skis up to a certain speed in order to access the majority of the performance while the carbon laminates can do more at a wider range of speeds. Again, this comes down to more preference than a black/white performance character, although we still see race skis and other high-end skis mainly using metal in order to generate power. In terms of the QST vs. Enforcer, the QST's use of carbon and flax make the ski snappy and poppy while the metal of the Enforcer keep it on the duller side, at least in terms of feeling on the feet. The QST is able to use a thicker poplar wood core while the Enforcer is a bit thinner profile, using the two sheets of metal to gain the sturdiness. If you're not looking for a super-powerful ski, like most skiers, but still want a high-end of performance, I think that there's a lot of room for the carbon-powered skis and non-metal laminates out there. Hope that helps!

    Hi,
    Thank you for the awesome review!
    I'm currently looking at the Blizzard Hustle, Nordica enforcer free & unlimited, QST and Elan Ripstick Blue & Black.
    I will be using it 40% onpist / 40% offpist in the resort and 20% touring with a Salomon Shift binding. On powder days I tried to be in the powder as much as possible.
    I ski quite aggressively so a good combination between stability & playfulness is important.

    Thank you for another great review guys. You are my go-to channel for ski info…
    I have a question:
    I just sold my 2020 Nordica Enforcer Free 110 in 191 cm. It was a bit too heavy and maybe too much ski for me, so Im looking for a new daily driver.
    I’m late 40’ies and have been skiing for 1000 years. Not an expert but maybe an anvanced skier. 187 cm and 85 kg. I dont ski park or butter etc. but I like a pretty centered stance I ski resort and offpiste. Mostly in The Alps.
    I would like something that can go fast but also slow. I have been considering to mount a Salomon Shift or Dynafit Rotation binding for lightness and the ocational uphill struggle.
    I have been looking at the Nordica Enforcer Unlimited 104 and the Faction Mana 3.
    I would appreciate any wise words from you guys :)

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      Hello! If you're thinking about slapping an AT binding on them, I would go with the Enforcer 104 Unlimited over the Mana. Just feels a little lighter, so more efficient for the uphills, and doesn't sacrifice too much downhill performance. Also, considering you've been skiing the 110, you're going to adapt to the 104 Unlimited really quickly as the shapes are basically identical. You'll appreciate the lighter feel, I think. Hope that helps! Not too much in the lighter-weight twin tip world. At least not that can accept a more centered mount point.

      There's a good deal of grip difference between the Bent 100 and the Ranger 102. If playfulness, trees, bumps, and powder are top priority, and you can deal with less carving performance, I'd go with the Bent.

    - Dynaster M Free 108
    - Black Crows Atris
    I’m 6’1 / 80kg / Advanced intermediate skier.
    I was looking for a maneuverable and playful ski on powder and that also provided a good level of stability and handled well at high speeds. I wanted something that I could take in the tight trees and moguls that could also charge down an open bowl with minimal chatter.

    • @SkiEssentials

      Really just a matter of your skiing style and preferences. Declivity 102 will feel a little stronger, both at speed in any terrain and when carving turns on groomers. QST 106, on the other hand, is more playful, has better float in soft snow, etc. I would say it kind of comes down to how fast you like to ski and your terrain preferences. If you're always looking to get off trail into softer snow, go QST. If you're looking for more of a mix of that and some groomer performance, go Declivity. Hope that helps!

      Hello! I like the idea of the Ranger 102 or Atris. I know a lot of people who have put tech bindings on those skis and used them for the application you're describing. The Koala 103 feels a bit clunky in tight terrain, and the Justis is heavy, so might wear you out a little while touring. Sender could work too, but something about the personality of the Ranger and Atris make them feel like great choices. Hope that helps!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      Hello! Weight's going to be the biggest different between those skis. QST 106 is quite a bit heavier. That's giving you a lot more stability at speed and a quieter, smoother feel. Less likely to get deflected or in other words, would track better through choppy snow. Backland is obviously better for someone who's touring a lot because it's so much lighter, but in a resort application, you're definitely sacrificing some stability and vibration damping. It's a strong ski considering its weight, but certainly more likely to get deflected and just not as confidence-inspiring at speed.

    Really interesting comment from Bob on the 104 Unlimited vs. the Bent 100. I ski a Bent 100 and have been progressing my skiing to the point where I'd like something a bit stronger on the groomers, but I don't want to give up the maneuverability in trees, and soft snow / bumps. Would the 104 Unlimited provide that? Have you moved away from the Bent 100 to the 104 Unlimited yourself?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад

      I have moved away from the Bent 100 to the 104, and it happened last spring. There were a few days in the woods with soft snow, and I went back and forth. In the trees, and only in the trees, the performance is kind of a wash. All other zones, I prefer the energy and shape of the 104--it's a much better and cleaner turner than the Bent. This is no insult to the Bent, rather a glowing review of the 104.

    Hey guys love the show! I'm a 22 year old guy from switzerland and in need of a freeride touring ski. I don't know if I should go for the atomic backland 107 or 100. It should be an everyday touring ski with favoured downhill capabilities and I'm a playful skier that likes to slash some turns in deep powder but also let it go and just rip. Is 107 under foot too wide and heavy for everyday touring in switzerland and am I going to suffer on the uphill and when the snow conditions aren't that great or is the difference to the 100 not that big, but the 100 would certainly be lighter and more versatile but also has less rocker? What do you think?

      You're giving up some soft snow performance for sure if you go to the 100 vs. the 107. The weight isn't a huge difference, but if you're looking for an everyday touring ski, my guess is that you'll be happier overall on the 100 due to the versatility. The lazy answer is 6. To dive a bit deeper, the Blank is more heavily rockered and tapered, leading to a shorter overall turn shape. This makes it one of the turnier skis at its level while the new QST 106 has a straighter cut for more directional skiing. The construction is largely the same, it's more the overall width, taper shape, and rocker profile that add to the floaty and smeary nature of the Blank versus the more powerful and edgy 106.

      I think a good place to start is there's more freestyle influence in the Atris shape. More rise in the tail, much closer to a twin tip. That gives it some switch skiing capabilities that the Ripstick doesn't have. Elan has more of a directional shape, which IMO helps it feels more responsive as a directional ski, but not as surfy or as balanced as the Atris. Aside from that, the Ripstick is a little stiffer, which enhances that "more-responsive" feel even further. A little more stable at speed too, although not as playful as the Atris overall. Hi team, love the work you are doing, excellent stuff.
    Please help as I just cannot make my mind up and apologies if its a bit long but I have watched too much footage haha...
    I mostly ski in Greece, we have a few resorts and lately its been dumping on strong years.
    180cm - 82kg - aggressive charging all over the mountain in and out of bounds and hitting cliffs / sidehits and powder & trees, but also lapping icy beat up "blacks" with some atrocious snow / ice and sometimes rocks to avoid.
    No ultra deep pow and not much park in Greece
    Will be purchasing either:
    volkl revolt 104 - 180cm (made in china or germany?)
    atomic bent 100 - 180cm (maybe the 188cm adds some more strength to it?)
    nordica enforcer 104 - (179 or 186cm?)
    Although the revolt and bent sound like the "funner" and more "playful" options for our generally small resorts, the enforcer sounds like it will give the edge on the days of bad snow quality, which is often. Price is also somewhat of an issue here as I can find the bent 200 euros cheaper than the nordica enforcer. All will be mounted with a look pivot 15. Looking for a one ski quiver, durability is also somewhat of a concern.
    Thanks anyways for the solid content, and if you have some time I would appreciate to hear your thoughts !

      @SkiEssentials  Год назад

      Hello! I feel like you're on the right track here. You're right in thinking that the Revolt and Bent are the "funner" and "more playful" options, but I'm not convinced those are better choices for you than the Enforcer 104. Skiing fast through chopped up snow, landing cliffs, and even powder performance are best from the Enforcer 104, IMO. Best on ice too.
      That said, you're right that there's something to be said about the price difference between it and the Bent 100, and I do think the Bent 100 could accomplish what you're looking for. Just don't expect seemingly endless stability like you'll get with the Enforcer.
      I personally think you can rule out the Revolt. It just doesn't sound like the right ski for you and I think the Bent actually offers a touch more stability with its higher camber height. Someone could argue the opposite, and I'd listen, but that's how I feel when I ski them.
      So... My recommendation would be Enforcer 104 Free, 186. I own that ski personally and it sounds like you and I ski in a relatively similar fashion. Other skis are getting closer, but it's still one of the best for aggressive skiing in that style. My second choice would be Bent 100. 188 could be cool if you're trying to recoup some lost power from the Enforcer.
      Hope that helps!!

    Do you think the rustler 10 or kore 105 Would best complete my current quiver of
    Kastle mx 74, dx 85, mpro 90, qst 92, ______? Fyi, the Kore is only 98mm underfoot in my length (163cm) This will be used as West Coast all mountain ski for My yearly vacation. Plus East Coast powder ski. I haven't been on many 100 mm skis. ( I did demo and like the Maverick. Did not care for the BC Justis much, found it Too heavy and stiff to use as my softer snow ski. Really Liked the mfree 99 love my qst 92, just as a reference. )
    Advanced Skier. 5'5" 160 lbs. (Pretty strong physically.)Love side hits. Love to go to the trees. But also ski pretty fast on the groomers.

      Awesome skis. I (Jeff) have grown particularly fond of them. We talked about them in our 100 mm comparison as it felt like the ski was a better fit for that range. Very fun, very well-rounded. Not the strongest ski in the world, not the lightest, nor with the most rocker, but an excellent mix of performance characteristics for a wider all-mountain/narrower freeride ski.

    How does the Reckoner 102 compare to the old Faction CT2.0? Thinking mostly in terms of park performance. Thanks!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      The Reckoner is considerably lighter and more flexible than the Faction. Some people like the extra weight and stiffness in the park while others prefer the more noodly ski. I think that for a dedicated park ski, the Candide has a bit more to offer, but for playful freeride skiing, the K2 is more adaptive and versatile.

    Gentlemen,
    Thank you for the comprehensive and thoughtful review. I am convinced the Salomon QST 106 is the next ski for me.
    Two quick questions:
    1. Currently one a J Skis Metal (186cm), so 189cm for QST (I'm 6'1, expert level and 180 lbs)?
    2. I'm a Marker Jester guy, but they are overkill for me-so I'm thinking Salomon Strive 14 (per your review w/QST)?

      Having tried most bindings including the Strives, they're fine but I'd consider going with the Attack 14 instead. The heel piece is much nicer to use imo and the low/wide platform feels great. Plus they're already proven to be durable and reliable.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад

      Hi Mike!
      If you're good with the 186, I'd say the 189 is a fine length--certainly a better option than the 180. For bindings, while we like the Strive 14, the 16 is a considerably better heel piece. Yes, it's overkill, but that's the fun part of bindings (Look Pivot 18's!). And to echo Steven's comments, the Attack is a more proven binding, so that's something to consider, with a metal heel rail and a fairly straightforward build, it's been a pretty darn good binding for a while. But, I do love my Strive 16's as well! Very low and light.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад

      No, I hear you, and the naming of the skis is confusing, since the 180 in the 106 is 104, but the 187 and 194 are 106. The Sender 104, in the shorter lengths and corresponding shorter radii, is actually a fantastic carver, and the flat tail with the camber underfoot put them in the upper echelon of carving skis in this category. Do any of these skis carve as well as a Volkl Deacon 76 Master or Blizzard HRC? Absolutely not, but relative to the category, the Rossignol's have earned high praise for sure.

      Yes, although I wouldn't consider that a strength of the Ranger 102. It's got enough of a turned-up tail to warrant a freestyle nod, but certainly not the focus. They're on the heavier side for that application. K2 Reckoner 102 or Nordica Unleashed 98 are both fantastic park and pipe skis that handle all-mountain/freeride skiing really well.

      Personally, I found the QST to be a more engaging ski from a turning/carving perspective, and while that's not really the overall intent of these skis, I do find it to be a nice benefit. In soft snow, and from a flotation perspective, the Atris is more of a point-and-shoot option while the Salomon does prefer to be in more of a turn most of the time. They feel very similar from a dampness and energy standpoint, but if you're a more aggressive skier who likes making less turns, the Atris is a more suitable option.

    Hi guys, how would you compare volkl revolt 104 and k2 rekoner 102?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  11 месяцев назад

      The Revolt feels quite a bit more substantial than the Reckoner, mostly due to the thickness of the core profile. The K2 is quite thin with the wood, relying on those carbon stringers to do a lot of the lifting while the Revolt is more blocky in style and substance. If you're on the aggressive side of the spectrum, the Revolt will hold up better while the Reckoner tends to bend quite a bit.

I am curious to see what you are going to say about the DPS Koala and the DPS Pagoda. The days that I can just cruise rule but then there are days that I am forced to turn from people or crud or trees or rocks.. Turns add up.. It gets to the stability or reactionary questions.. It also gets to the floating or tail sticking questions.. Maybe a couple runs don't make a difference but after 20 runs it can make a huge difference.. Those QST 106s x 188 after forcing turns for about 20 runs wore me out and they were great skis.. Maybe I need to work on my surfing or slurfing or whatever word that is;)
