I've added some additional comments to the description section. I'm mostly duplicating them here as per a couple suggestions. Thanks also @Acermeistre for suggesting I pin these so they are front and centre. Good to have more experienced RUclips users lend a hand!
    1. Yes the story is true and accurate. It seems too crazy to have happened but this really did occur as I've shared. I get that some people are responding to that disconnect saying it's lies and clickbait. Unfortunately it did happen.
2 I'm all for considering there may be another viewpoint to a story. That's a healthy thought.
For comments that say, she must have done something to "deserve it", that isn't offering the idea there could be another side to the story.
That's normalizing abusive behaviour. They are different.
    3. We did not cover the process of her getting a refund as it isn't pertinent to the interaction in question....unless you are suggesting the treatment she received was ok as long as she got the refund?
However I understand in retrospect that knowing a refund was eventually given helps with feeling the video was more complete.
    4. To those who want the golf course and marshal identified.
I understand that piece being withheld feels incomplete.
The lady this happened to is one of the nicest human beings on the planet...genuinely. She wouldn't allow me to share the story if I identified those involved.
She accepted it was important to share this story and have people talk about it. She wasn't willing to have the story be a way of extracting revenge for what happened to her.
While I may not have been that charitable I am respecting the agreement we made.
    5. To those who have asked why I didn't block or take down comments that are abrasive.

The entire purpose of the video is to bring forth conversation about how we treat one another. While I may disagree with the viewpoint of some of the commenters, if we are to have a discussion we have to actually listen to different viewpoints and consider them. We don't have to agree but curating them to solely support my perspective isn't a discussion.
If someone wants to stand up for abuse and bullying and defend it, I don't agree with it, but at least own it if you are going there.
For those who just want to be trolls....you get none of my time.
    Jason

As a former Marshall at a local Muni, I came across this exact same scenario numerous times. I always welcomed the new golfer, reminded them of pace of play and if they didn't have their own clubs i asked to make sure next time they have their own set. I always encouraged them to have a good time and told them that every golfer played for the first time once. This Marshalls behavior is totally unacceptable.

WOW! This story hits home but in a different way. My wife and I are avid golfers and have been for years. We are much older now looking at 80 in a couple of years. I started to play the forward tees a couple years ago to keep the game moving. My wife can keep up with the best of them. The pro shop have gotten to know us and realize that we are informal, low key type of players. As such, they have been pairing us up with new players, players that are new to the area and have not made golfing friends yet, visitors for the summer, etc. We have met so many wonderful people and couples. I play on a senior scramble league once a week and one of the players asked if he and his wife could play with us. She was very self conscious and lacked confidence. We've played four times so far and now have new golfing friends. It's sad that this unfortunate girl had to experience the jerk Marshall and I hope she sticks with it. Was playing with a friend who dropped at the turn. On the back 9 while waiting for the group in front to clear I was joined by this guy and a friend. We were about 1/2 way through the back 9 and when waiting on the t box he started complaining about how long it was taking and said that his sister dropped at the turn because it took 2 1/2 hrs to play the front. Trying to be nice I said that yeah my friend dropped as well. It was in Feb and cold and windy. I added that that and being the time of year and some folks haven’t picked up their clubs in a while we’re why it was a bit slow. His comment to me was that “If ya don’t know how to play the game you shouldn’t be out here”.

It's asinine how people frame these issues when the research shows that women have a huge bias in their favor in pretty much all walks of life. What this guy probably doesn't understand is that it could be that beginner women are just worse at golf than beginner men thus it's not that he is getting mad at her per se for being a woman but that women generally have a greater proportion of incompetent people he would get mad at. To reiterate, for the same competency level, people generally show a high level of favor toward women. And the funny thing is despite all the virtue signaling about sexism people do, there's a longstanding stereotype of men (and women for that matter) having no patience for incompetent men, yet they will have a lot of patience to help out incompetent women

I am pretty much a beginner myself, and I regularly play a 9-hole course. A bit more than a par-3 (it has bunkers, water (island green, even), rough and so forth). I started with a group lesson from the pro there, and one thing that stuck out to me is to keep up the pace of play. But that place is pretty laid back, and I have never seen a marshal there. In the spring when the weather was cold, I could play by myself - as the weather warmed up, I get paired with others. As I watch others play, I see their bad shots, and get less self-conscious about my own bad shots. And I have been held up by slower groups ahead of me (they have both riding carts and pull carts there - pull-carts are one main source of slower play at this place). But I try and never hold up people behind me (I recall once looking over at the previous hole - the guy behind me was busy trying to fish the ball out of the water, so I stopped worrying on that day).
I spent a lot of time at the range myself, and that's fine for what it is, but it is only a subset of the game. Doesn't help with pitch/chip/putt. Doesn't help learning to hit out of the rough. Doesn't help with bunkers. A putting green can sometimes help with some of these other aspects, but there is a sense of satisfaction you get when you can put the whole game together from one end to the other. Far from a perfect game, of course, but a lot more fun than going to the range.
Anyways, I am shocked that the marshal would treat her like this - I would have definitely gone into the pro shop and complained, and if that didn't help, I would have gone up the chain. That sort of thing should simply never happen.

I accept there will always be judgement in life based on appearance but when we are silent about that, it's a form of validating that behaviour is ok.
You sharing your story helps others realize this is still a thing and that we need to add our voice to the discussion saying this isn't ok.
This helps anyone who might not be confident enough to speak up or advocate for themselves know behaviour like that isn't condoned by the majority of us.

there are many public 9 hole pitch-and-put courses where I grew up, all part of a County parks system, those are the exact courses beginners need to start playing, you're too vague to know if this was a public or private course, or what type of course, exactly? 300 and 400 yard fairways, or 50 to 80 yard holes? it depends on the type of course and whether it's public or private to make a judgement on what happened

Similar situation with my wife and I. I got refunds and never returned. I’ve been bad-mouthing that course for 17 years. I won’t name it but it is a Country Club in Cranston, RI (western Cranston). Course Ranger was an old D-bag. Don’t fix your divots or ball marks if you golf there.

There's so many ways that I feel golf has a bunch of issues when it comes to things like this on the course... I'm a heavy and big man and on on course I played at when I came in to register to play a club pro said hey fat man don't come here to embarrass yourself... I swiftly said to him that I would be okay and that I was a 6 handicap and he laughed at me.... I went out and played with my group and I hit a 69 on their par 72 course... I never went back their..

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's part of the same conversation.
I get people are narrow minded but when we just gloss over it and say things like "that's just how it is" then that's just how it will be.
So we need to speak up and say that isn't going to wash and you need to do better.
It's not always comfortable, sometimes it's not safe to speak up. But most times it is or we find ways to have the conversation safely so that we are reminded it's not ok to gloss over this.
Great score btw. Congrats on that kind of play.

A 9 hole, par 3 course is where beginners should start playing. I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen a marshall on this type of course and I don’t believe I have.
I’m a 13 handicap. I have walked on as a single many times when I travel. One time I played a Gary Player designed course. I got paired with a husband and wife. She had never played before and had hit balls on the range for the first time that morning. On the first tee she missed the ball twice and then hit it maybe 10 yards to the right. The whole round was like that. I would suggest that a newbie like that should play a scramble.

I'm just starting out myself. Went to a local small course with only 9 holes that I had played on a couple times before. Granted, I shoot about 20-23 over being new, I had a gentleman start cussing us out and telling us to get off the course because we were " holding everyone up". When in reality it was a group that was 2 tee times ahead of us. We didn't tee off until 15 min past our first tee time. But he then proceeded to drive from the tee box slicing far into the woods. Way worse than my shot as a beginner off the same tee box. So karma git justice on that one. But he upset one guy in our group so bad he didn't even finish out

If she’d never been on a driving range prior to this then the marshal has a point. My public golf course does not allow anyone to play without a handicap and they require you to sign up for their training course, which is not cheap, to be certified if you do not already have a certified handicap.

It goes the other way too. Marshals should know the game. I was confronted on by a marshal on a course in Northern Mn. The course was packed. Not an open hole anywhere. I was about 225 out for my second shot on a par five. This is 20 yrs ago. On top of a hill. He said what are you waiting for? I told him the group on the green are my friends. Even if I didn't know them I wouldn't hit into them. He said we were holding up play and he might have to ask us to leave. The green opened up I hit my ball on the green and he just drove away.

People that are new to the game of golf need to learn thru a program like Operation 36, that starts from 25 yards away from the pin and works you back in increments. Nobody who is new to the game should be on a tee box anytime soon. They should learn the game, learn to hit balls, and start small. The program works and avoids situations like this.

A few additional details based on comments below

    1. There are two points I'm addressing in this video
    a. This lady was run off because of WHO she is (beginner) not because of what she was doing (playing slow)
This all happened BEFORE she had even hit her first shot.
The only two pieces of information the marshal had was she is a beginner and female.
Which of those makes her unqualified to play the starter par 3 course?
    b. The marshal publicly humiliated her and ran her off.
What circumstance exists where it's ok to treat anyone that way? Never mind someone who hasn't actually done anything yet. Never mind a new player who already is self conscious and nervous about their first real course experience. Never mind someone who also had taken the time to be prepared to keep things moving and would have gladly picked up any time she was at risk of holding things up.
Never mind she had been partnered with 2 experienced players that were good with her being a beginner, were welcoming and would have made sure things moved along as needed.
    3. For those of you who are offering there is always 2 sides to the story. On a pure level I think it’s good we always ask if there are other viewpoints.
If we consider that idea, for the moment.
For it to be valid there would have to be a circumstance where this person deserved to be humiliated and run off the course.
    My question to you:
What circumstances could you envision where being humiliated and run off the first tee of a golf course, having not yet hit a shot, is reasonable?
And honestly please put thoughts and answers to this in the comments below.
I’m genuinely curious where people feel the line is that where treating someone that was is ok.
    3. With respect to not naming name of marshal or course.
This lady is one of the most gentle kind human beings on the planet.
She doesn’t want revenge on the course/marshal and doesn’t want them getting hate messages etc because she spoke up.
She believes them being mean to her, doesn’t make it ok that she is mean spirited in return.
It’s her experience so I honour what she asked of me and her leadership in taking a higher road.
I do question whether not making it public does allow the behaviour to continue without consequence but it’s her call on that.
My part is telling the story and asking everyone to be aware this is still happening and to stand up and say this isn’t ok.

About part 1a) Not sure, this is a healthy perspective to be honest. Being a beginner golfer is obviously not something that becomes part of your identity. Creating an impression that all these things happened because she is who she is, does even more damage than the problematic situation itself.
About part 1b) Getting humiliated is a bit of a subjective thing. Different egos lead to the same actions having different impacts on different individuals. But sure, as soon as somebody connects his/her own identity with being a female beginner golfer then obviously humiliation is surely on the cards.
Still, the whole story sounds fishy to me. I mean, we are supposed to believe, that one ranger individual denying a paying customer the chance to play, with there being no issues earlier? Just because "female" and "beginner"? We are supposed to believe that there a situation emerged, that brought the beginner to tears and her HUSBAND not stepping in? The two other golfers not stepping in? Sorry mate, whenever such black and white stories come up, people should get a little more skeptical. Any chance, that you just fall victim to a fake story yourself? I mean, it is easy content for you and its easy moral points for you because who wouldn't be rooting for your points?
Your 3rd point really is taking the cake then, so after crying, feeling hurt on an identity level, having witnessed your husband not stepping in and sharing the story with somebody with a youtube channel, the individual still is supposedly concerned with revenge? Come on.
I call BS. This is the golfer equivalent of some "heroic" story about courageous police men, independent women or clever children. Stuff that is only there to create attention and clicks.
That being said, there are mean people out there so the scenario here is not completely impossible. But not being impossible isn't an indicator of truth.
edit: If the lady didn't want you to name and shame the club, I really hope you advised her to get in contact with the club itself. Otherwise you are just as useful of a golf buddy as her alleged husband and alleged playing partners. What do you think will change such a situation when it isn't adressing it right away? Making videos like this is running into open doors, it has no effect whatsoever.

It is unfortunate that happened as that is not the way to treat people, more so persons new to the game. I would like to see all courses that allow the public to play, to have set days or time where beginners can play and have priority, and other days where depending on your handicap level you can have priority. So if I am a 11 handicap and I know my level are a certain time or day, I can plan for those days and time. And a beginner can make plans to play on the day and times when they are given the priority. My mother told me that in the UK, you cannot play on the golf courses unless you have a handicap. Not sure if that still stands today. There has to be some level of control to ensure people can enjoy a day of golf.

I know Marshalls have a tough run of it sometimes but they should be encouraging players, not discouraging them from playing the game. The woman you mentioned paid her fee to play and had every right to be there. I certainly hope that she had a nice long talk with the Pro or manager of that course and let them at least have a piece of her mind.
I had a similar, of slightly different incident just few days ago. I got paired with a dad and his two teenage boys. Both boys are taking up the game and were out playing their first round. Their dad was not a novice but obviously hadn't been a player for that long. I can't say I was particularly thrilled with the pairing (at least at first) but, like you say, it is growing the game. And they kids were polite, nice and well behaved and took instruction pretty well.
There was bout a 15 minute gap where there were no golfers between our group and the four of us teeing off. I almost jumped out and played by myself but decided to at least play a few with the kids/dad and break away if I felt it was bogging me down. We teed off on the first hole and, like every first time out the kids were hacking away. There was two foursomes behind us and I could see they were mildly perturbed at being behind a couple of beginners.
Now the dad had told the boys that they could hit the ball three times and then they should pick up and just drop the ball on the green. The kids had just hit their third shot when one of the group decided to run up in his cart and berate the boys for being so slow and causing a backup on the course. This was less than 10 minutes into the round. He spent at least three or four minutes giving the kids and the dad grief before I stepped in and said something along the line, 'The only thing that is slowing us down now is you. Go back to your tee box.' Like planned the kids picked up and moved on to the green. Putted a bit and then went to hole 2. I could tell they were a bit upset at the jerk that decided to be come a self appointed marsal on the course.
Before they teed off I pulled the boys aside. I pretty much said, 'That guy back there. Eff him. You have just as much right to be here as he does and what he said was unacceptable.' I also gave instructions on how to quicken up play and suggested to the dad that for this round, play a scramble format so all can hit but also they aren't hitting three or four times to make it up to his ball. It made it a game and they enjoyed that. By hole three the foursome behind us was at least a half a hole behind.
At three the course marshal rolled up and told us that we were slowing down play. At this point I was starting to get ticked off. He made the comment that the two holes ahead of us were wide open to which I replied, 'Yes and they were wide open when we teed off. We are exactly on our expected 2 hour nine time.' He nodded and didn't say anything else but I know that group behind complained to him. At hole nine were were probably 10 minutes behind schedule (no big deal to me) and again the Marshal rolls up and says something. I got really snappy with him at that point and pointed out to him that the group behind us is just now getting up to the tee and has had to wait on us for one hole. I also reminded him that I have played there for 15 years and have rarely ever gotten off that course in under four hours.
Whether the boys and dad had planned to play 9 or 18 I don't know for sure but I could tell they had enough and they called it a round after nine holes. It probably was best they did, this game can get overwhelming for new golfers and nine holes is about all a new teen probably could take. But I also know that they didn't get much support from anyone other than some middle aged dude that is one of the more impatient golfers you will normally find on the course.
I hate slow play. I mean I HATE it. It drives me crazy. At the same time I recognize that someone new is going to take a bit longer and that the goal is to both get through the round at a reasonable time AND to make it fun for the person playing. I encouraged them to keep playing, to get out and have fun. I pretty much told them that the first year should just be an opportunity to go and enjoy yourself, learn to hit the ball and get better. Don't take longer than 15 minutes on a hole. Time yourself and if you find you are getting to that time then move up, pick up or whatever but don't let idiots ruin the game for you. You can have fun and be respectful to others around you.

I used to live in LA and used to play at a good public course that had the 1st tee directly in sight of the cashier/starter office, and close to the practice putting green. When somebody had trouble getting off the tee like swinging and barely moving the ball, the starter would announce over the loudspeaker to the player to pick up their ball and walk down the fairway to play their next shot. Pretty embarrassing to the player.
It sounded pretty mean, but this course was known for 5 1/2 to 6 hour rounds on the weekend so justified or not? It certainly didn't speed up the overall speed of play.

I went a long time ago, as a kid, and my uncle only used a 9 iron and a putter on the par 3 course, me and my friend just used his clubs, of which he only had like 5 total with him, lol. Why do you need a set of your own clubs, especially on a par 3 course? Obviously if there are people standing behind waiting for you, and you're a beginner, just move on to the next hole... common sense... Dude must have been drunk.

That same marshal is the guy that takes several practice swings then hits the ball 20 yards. Then when he putts he looks and studies all angles takes 4 or 5 practice swings then misses the putt anyway. Point is speed of play IS a problem. There’s no reason 9 holes should take 2 hours or 4 or more hours playing 18.

Not sure all the facts are true. They accepted her green fee in the club house and the ranger interacted with them on the first tee and basically chased them out of there. Seems like this person would probably be telling the staff inside about this being her first time and by accepting the green fee the deal was sealed.Rangers are at the bottom of the food chain at golf courses and the pro or the person responsible for the bottom line of the course makes the policy for all course decisions involving play. We jump to the conclusion that this happened because the golfer was a women but any junior golfer would also be turned away as well. Better chance these women encountered a miserable marshal than a public golf course that has an issue with women. Nothing about actual course policy giving by anyone other than a marshal. Hard to believe her money was accepted and she got chased out of there before her first swing. More info needed.

If this lady is as genuinely nice as you stated, it is understandable that she might not want to be identified, but not want to provide any information to help prevent this from happening to others, makes the whole story suspect. I believe this story was woven together to call attention to a legitimate issue but should not have been presented as a factual event.

Made arrangements with friends to go for an actual round of 9. I had golfed before with work folks and enjoyed it. Already at the 4th hole, putting. Some dick in a course employee cart tells me, not the others, I must vacate due to T-box damage with unreplaced divots. I never left divots in a T-box as verified by my company. I explained a few on the fareway, but they were replaced. I knew the drill as I used to be a greens keeper years before. He insisted. I rebutted and demanded to see this in the course rules/constitution and refused to stop playing. His delaying us from play forced us to let two other teams play through which he said was not allowed. Again, show me I said. If I am forced to go, I wanted a full refund because nowhere was anything about this in the waiver. He harassed no one else. I took it to the board of directors. I got my money back, an apology from the board, two rounds at no charge anytime as compensation and his dismissal. It turns out, I was the only one with sneakers; flat-soled sneakers. This golf snob took a unilateral exception that cost him his job.

How could she have experienced any pace of play when they booted her for even trying. It was a par 3, for goodness sake. I’m not a slow player, but I’ll take my time over a shot. I find that the people who actually whinge about slow play tend to saunter their way around the course, chat too much, and generally pfaff about, and complain when others don’t walk up and hit it. I’d sooner spend my time hastening to my next shot, than hurrying my actual shot. Also, “speed golf” is a very specific niche game, and not how the game was intended to be played.

She did say they were super nice, welcoming and very supportive when she introduced herself and said this was her fist time on the "big" course. The person she came with also tried to intervene but she eventually was so embarrassed by the way the marshal was admonishing her for being there she just wanted to get out of there as quickly as she could.

This is a bunch of crap! I played with a friend a few weeks ago that was his first time, we played 9 holes teeing off as the last group of the day. At hole 7 the marshal came and told us we were taking to long and the we needed to speed it up. He then parked his cart and watched us, telling us again to speed up. This totally ruined the last three hole, I told the marshal it was my friends first time, but he just blew it off and continued to make a big deal about our pace. Spoiled what was a great time until mister I want to go home interfered!

Don't know where this happened but if that happened in my area, the marshall would have been berated and lucky to leave alive.

Was this really a pitch and putt, par 27 course? I'm thrown off by the requirement for a full bag. If it is a par 27 course, do they expect players to carry a driver, fairway woods, long irons/hybrids, etc. with them? Did they tell the clubhouse what happened with the marshal? What did the clubhouse say? I hope they at least got a refund.

    • @alexli4942
      @alexli4942 2 месяца назад

I forgot to add that the full bag requirement makes it sound like it wasn't a beginner level course. I play a 9 hole course that has one par 5, multiple par 4s, dog legs, out of bounds hazards, strong cross winds, etc. It's a real deal course where you need a full bag and be an experienced player. If this is the case, then I can see where the marshal was coming from.

@@alexli4942 More likely that the whole story is BS and madeup to generate "content". It is extremely one sided. They want us to believe that 4 men did this woman dirty - the alleged marshall who behaved in a way nobody would feel appropriate, a husband who apparently didn't put a stop in and two experienced golfers who didn't take her side? But this angel of a woman still doesn't want to name and shame? Sorry guys, this is BS.

I encountered 1 jerk marshall years ago when I was new to the game (i was with experienced golfers so they made sure I was following proper etiquette and not doing anything wrong.) The marshall just sniffed me out and decided to pick on me but luckily my buddies stood up for me. Yes the jerks are out there.

Here in New York we would have told the Marshall to turn his cart around and leave the premises ASAP and we would then proceed to let her hit first.

That Marshall should be relieved of their duties and most importantly taught that to grow golf, you need new players and all skill levels are welcome.

They also stole her money by accepting her green fee, then kicking her off the course. Marshall should be fired.

Moral of the story….dont tell the marshal it’s your first round ever….. if the club doesn’t allow first timers on their course they should have told the players when they were paying since I do believe the young lady declared that she was playing her first round of golf.

Too many unanswered questions here. First off the Marshall doesn’t run the course, thats the Head pro and in his absence the assistant pro unless they have a designated manager by some off chance. Most Marshalls are retirees just there to keep busy and for the perk of free golf that comes with it and in the end don’t carry that authority. Sorry I know plenty of them and even some head pros.

Sometimes people who are new are going to be vulnerable to not knowing the norms and also vulnerable because they are nervous and self conscious about being a beginner. It's really helpful for them to hear comments like yours so they know what to do in a proactive manner and also what isn't ok to experience. Thanks for this.

This sounds fabricated. Does a par 3 course even have a marshal, let alone not welcome beginners? Or enforce a rule about not having a complete set of clubs, which isn't even a thing (since some people regularly play with a 1/2 bag).

My daughter is 26 years old and is just picking up the game. She will be going to the range to get in her learning time. Her clubs have been built and she will learn the way I did at 10 years of age. If this happens here in WV when I take her to the course to play, her Gen X Dad is going to go off. I will go to jail and the starter WILL apologize for their atrocities to my daughter before I go.
This guy apparently has issues with ladies. He and the course where it happened needs to be famous.

Hi Zane, I have a daughter who is similar age and is learning the game too. Hopefully you both get to share wonderful times on the golf course.
With respect to naming the course I just added some pinned comments speaking to that. Basics are the lady it happened to made me promise not to "out" the course. She is a very gentle and kind person and doesn't want a revenge style video. So we are focusing on the event and the conversation about how golf has this heritage of not being inclusive and welcoming and we need to stop doing that. The game is amazing in that I can play with my beginner daughter and have a wonderful time together. Not many sports bring that same option so lets encourage new players to come and enjoy....not chase them off.

@@FittedGolfperfectly understand your opinion. Understand what you are trying to do with the video. This has never happened to me, but I have seen it happen at courses and it infuriates me. I’m not crazy enough though hurt someone over my daughter not getting to play a round of golf, but the world we live in today would call them on you, just because you stood up for them. I got asked at one of our local courses to use a 3 wood instead of a persimmon driver which I bang 250 yards, because my driver broke on the first tee. The ranger wouldn’t let it go. So when I made the turn to 10 i stopped and talked to the owner. The ranger never bothered me again. Yes he still works there. Yes I still play there. Knee jerk reaction to your video.
