I had an opportunity to check out the Merlin PSA at Oshkosh 2018. This tiny little plane is actually very nice. If you are unfamiliar, Merlin PSA is a single pilot solo airplane built in the Czech Republic. It is a production aircraft in Europe but it is sold here in the US as a kit. A quick build kit.
Merlin PSA can be built in 2 weeks or less. The kit comes delivered with most of the work done for you. The fuselage and the landing gear come preinstalled. Legally you have to finish 51% of the build. But this is such a simple kit that it doesn’t take much time to finish it up. Being an experimental aircraft, a builder does have several choices in engine power plane and choosing avionics.
Base price for the quick build kit is $18,500. You can finish your airplane right around $35,000. The more options you add though the higher the finished cost. You only need a 65 Horse power Rotax engine to get this thing moving. And it will cruise between 90 to 100 miles per hour while only burning 2.5 gallons of fuel per hour. Useful load with full fuel is 300 pounds. Thats a lot of available space to use.
If you are not shy about flying alone, definitely give the Merlin PSA a look. You can find out more about this airplane at aeromarine-lsa.com

Thank that man for his service! A10 pilots are a special breed.
Thank you Mike. This plane is very interesting and could serve my mission but it has been 3 years now of “advertisement “ and even though they say it’s a 2 week build (biggest selling point to me) , I haven’t been able to find one customer video with a flying airplane 🤷♂️. It would be nice to see videos and reviews from people that have actually bought , built and are now flying the airplane. Still a very nice and interesting plane to me. Thanks
Avweb did a video review of one.
@@thatguy6207 yeah I saw that, but that was on Chip’s plane not from a builder that bought the kit and it’s flying now. Just curious of people experience and how the plane performs
LOl ex Warthog pilot. That's a pretty good recommendation for the Merlin.
I really like this plane.
LOVE the Merlin PSA. I think Chip Erwin has done a great job keeping the 'buzz' alive for this plane- even after carrying it for a couple of years now. Lots of video footage of these flying, landing, stalling, etc... But, I know that you are trying to determine: buy, rent, trailer, hangar... a lot to consider. I also am very curious about the single seat EKOLOT. Considered a motorglider, it sits on tricycle gear, uses a moped single cylinder motor rated at 29HP. It almost weighs in at under 254 Lbs, making it a true ultralight. Complete, assembled it costs @ $30k, burns @ 1.2 GPH (not a typo) and has a glide ratio of 25:1. Personally, I would love to glide, soar on thermals, and, yet- be able to get back to the strip in safety. It seems very slippery, which works for me, although it's not the prettiest plane on the market... Would love it if you get up close and personal with it- just to see if it would make the short list.
I plan to. Stay tuned for future uploads.
The first Merlin you were looking at... I sat in it.. At 6' 7" I fit comfortably.
Hks the performance exhaust maker for civics in th late 90's. Sweet
Great stuff!!! Their exhaust systems are top notch for Japanese cars!!!
Brrrrrrr says the best jet ever built in my opinion thanks for your service
Loved the interview. Thanks for posting.
Hey DON ,,,,, What autopilot are you going to install in yours ?
Did you crash your new sling or something. I saw the first flight and that was a while ago. Am waiting to see more.
Thats a cool plane.
Excellent Review. 2/25/2022
Do you really need the BRS with the HKS reliability and a solid airframe? And is 120 kts cruise a bit optimistic?
wow 2.5 gallons per hour at 120 knots?! I'm getting my pilots license! lol
i think he said miles per hour and not knots !!
@@momonamafg1917 nope he clearly said 100 to 120 knots at 2:48 check it out
Nice video! Greetz from holland.
To bad it's a single seater, because I hate flying alone. I love to share my flying experience with someone else. But the 2.5 gph is awesome, it's a nice little plane that won't put a big hole in your pocket. If I was to spend 40k or 50k on a plane I would probably look for something used that can seat two or four people.
Mike, what do you think about to buy Marlin PSA?
I like it. And I think it has a chance in the market. Affordable, great performance and lots of usable load for one person.
This would be cool with the small 68hp 5cylinder verner radial engine. I think that's actually cheaper than the hks also.
One seater?
if you compare a nice luxury car to a piston engine small plane and the amount of manufacturing and engineering that goes into it it seems like they should be able to produce a little plane for less than the car? maybe I just never hear about 2 or 4 seater planes that are under 50grand new are they out there?
Yes they are. You should browse more of my videos
If a person was to buy a Merlin kit and build it couldn’t a stronger bigger power plant be put in it? Like a Viking 130 or something like it. Two cylinders use doesn’t instill my confidence in it. From what I’ve seen of the N. It is built solid enough and the fuel tanks could always be expanded.
I'd go for a Onex myself.
can you log in hrs for pilot license on a merlin psa?
I believe you can
What sick is that you can look down xD
i would love to fly an A10 WARTHOG and the merlin.
Hey great job man
Dnt c to manny black people intrested or even dedicated in doing videos related to aviation
Way to put your people up
So does HKA, the genius behind weeping-wing systems everywhere, own this company?
2:00 please fokus engine
Am I hearing Dan Johnson in the background?
Parachute??? Can you make a video explaining that?
A parachute for the airplane. Can be pulled in an emergency situation to get you down on the ground safe. I'll make a video to explain further. Thanks.
MojoGrip yay!!!
OMG, just do a search in RUclips on BRS parachute.
@@marksmith2078 wow, care much?
@@marksmith2078 well I'm sorry i broke the search laws google police.
I am green as can be on flying, just getting into it. Or trying lol. What does "Range: Up to 4 hours endurance" mean? I'm looking for a starter plane that I can fly from Oklahoma to Indiana. If I have to stop and refuel that's perfectly fine. I'm also trying to keep the plane itself under $100K purchase. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
4 hours range means you can fly the airplane for 4 hours. If the cruise speed is say, 100 mph. Then you can travel up to 400 miles. This particular plane cruises at 138 mph. You can find a decent plane for half your budget that fits your 800 mile mission. You'd probably need to make a pit stop and refuel but its doable. Just watch more of my videos 😁
Nice plug lol. But I will watch more video's. This was like the 7th one lol.
But if you could recommend one that would be great! 2 seats or more, at least a 1000 pound payload. I'm 225lb and if I have passengers or cargo, and I would always have cargo lol. Half my fam is in OK and the other in Indy. But every time I drive everyone wants something from the other place lol.
Certified airplane - A Piper Cherokee 180 should do fine. Sells for $30k - $50k
Experimental - Saberwing or RV6A
You are the man, if I ever meet you in real life I owe you a steak dinner.
i like you man
14 days to build that!? SHUT-UP!!
Am I first?
Won't catch me in one of those.
Our loss....
