Pete Best is a very nice man, a real gentleman. I think he has made more progress in his life, spiritually speaking, than any of the other four have done or will do in theirs. Pete Best has learned to forgive and forget, and so has come out victorious. A great man!
Ringo has a unique style and regardless of technical ability could make any band sound great. Some drummers can do that. It's understandable therefore why they took him over Pete Best sadly. Ringo was the final piece of the jigsaw. My favourite band without question
Unfortunately for Pete, the Beatles didn’t become the Beatles until Ringo Star entered the picture! Paul McCartney made sure he was compensated when the release of the Anthology came about.

I am happy for him that he made so much money from 'Anthology' but I remain firm in my belief that The Beatles would not have been as successful as they were without Ringo Starr being their drummer.
Come off it, the Beatles would have been huge whoever was Drummer. It was about the lyrics and melodies and singing. As John Lennon said when asked if Ringo was the best drummber in the world. Ringo wasnt even the best drummer in the Beatles.
@@bieituns ummmm... dubious. the industry at the time had a definite standard of quality that mr best wasn't even close to. best has been proven to be unable to keep time over a 2 minute song . had best been so great, another liverpool band would have swept him up. he was inept - perhaps he has improved since, but in 1963? completely inadequate.
@@bieituns I get the whole "he wasn't the best durmmer in the Beatles" is in jest (I hope), but let's give this little joke some validity for the sake of fun. First off, who was a better drummer in the group do you think? I couldn't even picture John or George on the sticks. The only other member who could use a set was Paul, and from his repertoire, I can't say I was ever as in awe with his drumming as I was with Ringo's. Paul plays drums on The Ballad of John and Yoko and the drumming on that song is so drab and uninspired, so much so that it's actually the only aspect of that song which I don't like. Ringo was not just a technically astute drummer, he was also like a human metronome, always on beat. But what truly set him apart was how absolutely ingenius he was. With his cheeky little fills and varied style of playing, he ultimately gave each Beatles song a new dimension and a sense of depth. Take any of these songs for reference and tell me that Ringo and Ringo's style of playing doesn't improve them: Rain Come Together She Said She Said Hello Goodbye I Want You (She's So Heavy) I Feel Fine A Day In The Life Tomorrow Never Knows
Pete is very considerate and looking great, still. I couldn't imagine his roll of the dice! Jesus, could you? Also, I will not stand any Ringo slander. None. He's one of rocks great drummers.
I love ya Pete, I’m glad your still around and you still look great, and nobody can ever take away the fact that you were a Beatle and part of history. But Ringo was simply a better drummer.

Nothing against Pete but The Beatles simply didn't rate him. When Ringo joined it just 'clicked' this is what they have all said. Pete did make a couple of million when anthology 1 was released.
That's very strange because with Pete Best as their drummer, they had a huge fan base and ,in fact,as far back as January,1962, topped the polls, and were the Number One band in all of Liverpool.
@@robinrobyn1714 I'm sure they did. It also proves the genius of the other lads. As I said and you can look it up, they all didn't rate him. They desperately needed a drummer for Hamburg, hence Pete coming in. Like anything in life, if something better comes along later on, you would obviously go for it.
@@mazza8576 They needed a drummer in August 1960 , to go to Hamburg. And like I already stated, well over a year later, with Pete Best still their drummer, they are the top band in Liverpool. Furthermore- George Martin himself never wanted Pete Best thrown out of the group. He wanted Pete Best to remain in the official line up. Only in the studio would they use a session drummer.
Pete there is a massive upside to.every bad situation. You didn't have there fame you didn't quite have there talent but you are still alive and well while half the Beatles have been gone for decades now.
He said a few words that would form lyrics for part of a song...."What happened yesterday you can't change, but today and tomorrow are in your hands ....once you get that in your head- it's a straight road ahead.."
The Beatles Anthology tracks featuring Pete demonstrate he could not keep time and he lacked versatility. I’d also like to have seen Pete try to attempt the complex and brilliant drumming Ringo did on Rain, She Said She Said, Ticket to Ride, A Day in the Life, I Feel Fine, Strawberry Fields Forever, I am the Walrus, Come Together and the list goes on and on. Sorry Pete.
I'm not a drummer, but when I listened to the version of Love Me Do with Pete Best on drums,, even I could tell Pete's timing was off. I doubt Pete could have played drums on songs like Ticket to Ride, Rain, Tomorrow Never Knows, A Day in the Life, or Come Together (among others), anywhere near as well as Ringo.
@@thehighllama8101 There's a reason Pete struggled with that infamous EMI recording of, "Love Me Do". When the Beatles arrived at the studio that day George Martin wasn't there. The Beatles played, "Love Me Do", among 3 other songs, for the engineers running the audition. The engineers were impressed enough to send for Martin. Once George Martin listened to, "Love Me Do", he abruptly changed the arrangement, ditching the skip-beat that Pete had been playing all along in the clubs. This threw Pete off! To be fair it would have thrown off Ringo too as well as any other Liverpool drummer. Paul didn't like it either, it threw off his vocals. EMI engineer, Norman Smith, who worked the session summed it up by saying, "The problem wasn't with how Pete was playing, but rather with the new arrangement he was being told to play." Most Beatle fans don't know the history of the song "Love Me Do". They just hear the below average demo on Anthology and blame Pete Best. Regarding your comment about songs like Ticket to Ride, Rain, etc...I agree with you. Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles, but he had the opportunity to grow with the band in the studio and had the benefit of multiple re-takes.
Yes, Ringo was the better drummer and a better fit personality wise. But, Pete Best was the one that was there for the formative time period when they honed their skills in Hamburg. Pete’s “Atom Beat”, while rudimentary and lacking creativity, was still the signature sound back in the Hamburg gigs that gave them a harder, almost proto-punk rock sound. If we are to take John Lennon’s own words when he said…”We never played better or rocked harder than we did in Hamburg”, well then, Pete was part of that “Never played better or rocked harder” phase that laid the groundwork that would eventually propel them to immortality.
The Beatles needed a drummer like a baseball team needs a pitcher. You can have great hitters and fielders but without a pitcher you are going to lose.
I can answer about Ringo because it's very easy to see: The Beatles made the right choice with ditching Pete and getting Ringo as they wouldn't have been The Beatles we all know and love without him.

I love you Pete, just like I love the other Beatles. You seem to be a nice guy and you were member of the band when they were just one minute away from stardom. But the boy who was very poor during his youth, suddenly became their drummer. No one can take away your memories and I'm eager to hear about them. I'm extremely facinated about the two years before they made it. It is such an unbelieveble story. Dirk 👨🪲

@@robg8784 Nah, George Martin just didn't want Pete anywhere near the studio, he could play at live gigs, but not recording. It was mainly George Harrison who wanted Pete out, and the other agreed.
It's wrong-headed to think that The Beatles would have become anything like what they did become with Pete on board. Like: "Oh, Pete! You were so close to the big time!" No - to think that is to deny the extraordinary, spooky alchemy and balance of The Beatles. Change any one key part, and the story doesn't work. And Ringo was a key part.
They just didn’t like him like they liked ringo. And ringo could drum…and if they were jealous…so what…he’s forever tied to the greatest thing in music ever…he should be happy…and at his age likely is now…
Pete Best is a great guy. I met him about 5 years ago and spent time with him. His story and why he was replaced and why Ringo hasn't been told correctly. The Beatles themselves have changed the story a number of times. The latest one Paul tells is "we always wanted Ringo" which isn't true at all. Ringo was approached after a number of other drummers turned them down. Bobby Graham, Ritchie Galvin and Johnny Hutchinson each were offered the job and they turned it down. So at the very least they SETTLED on Ringo. He wound up fitting in very well in the end but had any of the other 3 who were offered took the job......I think Pete knows more of why he was sacked and he isn't telling. One thing that is true is that around the time he was sacked his mother gave birth to a child fathered by Neil Aspinal. (named Roag) I think this was definitely part of it. I am not sure it was his playing because to tell the truth, they were no better than he was! All of them were amateurs. Overall the story is a stinky one.
What's your take on Mark Lewisohn's description of what happened in his Volume One of Beatles' biography? He interviewed _many_ people about this, most of them never heard from before.
Your assessment makes more sense than what the majority believes. I met Pete and Roag the other day, at a fan-con, during their only US visit. Great guys, and really down to earth.
If the Beatles considered other drummers before hiring Ringo, that tells us how serious they were about replacing Pete. And let's remember that the three guys got in a van and drove hundreds of miles to where Ringo was playing with Rory Storm to offer him the job, which also tells us that Ringo was the guy they wanted.
@@JanPBtest Lewishon's books are great but not without error. He wanted to weave a narrative that they always wanted Ringo which fits nice in his book....but it isn't true. If you watch him in interviews this subject comes up a lot and his mild demeanor changes and he gets angry...why?..because he knows that his version of the story isn't true!
Lennon shouldn't have talked so down on him. They used him by bringing him along just to get by and that's pathetic. If you can't find a drummer then fine but don't use someone. In a way he helped them at least start even if Ringo took off from there and was amazing. He got em

Exactly. Ringo contributed a great deal to their sound.
His unique style is because he’s left handed playing a right handed kit
@@joesheppards1 yes I knew that. I'm the same with guitar(a left hander, playing right handed). 🙂
Pete Best is always a bona fide part of Beatles history. You can't take that away from him!😅
That us true enough
Unfortunately for Pete, the Beatles didn’t become the Beatles until Ringo Star entered the picture! Paul McCartney made sure he was compensated when the release of the Anthology came about.
They were already achieving some success with Pete on drums, but they wouldn't have become a worldwide sensation with him.
@Bmk Bmk compensated him for unreleased recordings? When they were released and sold millions he got royaltes. It took them some years to make serious money.
McCartney didn’t do anything. It is a legal matter.
@@randyjordan5521 how right you are.
@Bmk Bmk i was not business. Paul had a hand in it...and had the final word on using Petes face on the vol 1 cover.
Best should be immensely thankful that he was not part of “The Beatles myth” as John described it in a 1970 interview. He’s alive, he’s healthy, without making a Faustian bargain.
And married to the same woman almost 60 years. Something I'm sure that wouldn't have been the case had he stayed with them.
So is Ringo.
Outstanding Sabrina which most people will think is a crazy comment.
@@steffanhoffmann8937 It’s obvious now. My own bias kept from actually looking and listening. The Beatles were the 60’s and that institution still wields enormous power in culture creation. I worshipped them too. But I pulled the veil from my eyes.

Imagine his death rattle 😂😂😂😂
pete still looks great
I am happy for him that he made so much money from 'Anthology' but I remain firm in my belief that The Beatles would not have been as successful as they were without Ringo Starr being their drummer.
Come off it, the Beatles would have been huge whoever was Drummer. It was about the lyrics and melodies and singing. As John Lennon said when asked if Ringo was the best drummber in the world. Ringo wasnt even the best drummer in the Beatles.
@@bieituns Lennon never said that, it was a joke an american comedian did many years ago...
Exactly I agree
Take any of these songs for reference and tell me that Ringo and Ringo's style of playing doesn't improve them:
Rain
Come Together
She Said She Said
Hello Goodbye
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
I Feel Fine
A Day In The Life
Tomorrow Never Knows
Pete is very considerate and looking great, still.
I couldn't imagine his roll of the dice! Jesus, could you?
Also, I will not stand any Ringo slander. None. He's one of rocks great drummers.
Great guy, hope he knows about his breathing, hopefully it's nothing serious, sure he's fine.

Because hes 82 thats why.

Pete was a great drummer. I saw them at the time.
I love ya Pete, I’m glad your still around and you still look great, and nobody can ever take away the fact that you were a Beatle and part of history. But Ringo was simply a better drummer.
Debatable as Ringo didn't play on lots of Beatles songs.

@5:03 Amen. Great life lesson.
Nothing against Pete but The Beatles simply didn't rate him. When Ringo joined it just 'clicked' this is what they have all said. Pete did make a couple of million when anthology 1 was released.
Three million
@@theo9952 even better :)
Sorry Pete.
And imagine Pete onstage at the Royal Variety Performance....
Pete had nothing on ol Barry Wom! But at least he didn't lose his bride to some Scotsmen from Hull!
Ringo most definitely is the better drummer. He was very creative, and unique. Exactly what the Beatles needed.
@@thehighllama8101 agree
Como persona las comparaciones son de mal gusto para mi no ha mejores ni peores por fabor ya no le echen mas fuego al agraviado eso no se vale
Lovely bloke a true class act
Great drummer Pete, great answers especially when asked on comparison w/gringo 'drummers have different styles'.
The Beatles needed a drummer like a baseball team needs a pitcher. You can have great hitters and fielders but without a pitcher you are going to lose.
my dad had dinner with him in the 70s, he told stories about the boys
Now and Then brought me here after seeing the 1st Beatles known photo with Pete Best
I can answer about Ringo because it's very easy to see: The Beatles made the right choice with ditching Pete and getting Ringo as they wouldn't have been The Beatles we all know and love without him.
I have great respect 👏for you Pete Best I don't know if you are a Religious man but you have a Buddhist mentality
He'd have topped himself if he hadn't developed that!
What happened to Pete back then totally reminds me of the story of Limahl and Kajagoogoo, who was kicked out of the band in a similar way.

Pete. That breathing sounds rough brother
There is so much top talent that comes out of Liverpool.
They way Pete Best was let go by the Beatles was cowardly, they didn’t have the decency to tell him in person despite being “friends.”
They just didn’t like him like they liked ringo. And ringo could drum…and if they were jealous…so what…he’s forever tied to the greatest thing in music ever…he should be happy…and at his age likely is now…
It would be great to see Paul put things right with Pete. He did it with John...
thats a tough pill to swallow
It's too bad because I think his book his great. There have been a number of books and articles on this subject which he doesn't agree with and/or chooses to ignore. If you watch him in interviews this subject comes up a lot and his mild demeanor changes and he gets angry...why?..because he knows that his version of the story isn't true!
