    I have a 1911 COONAN 357 that I purchased in 1986. I has never jammed. I was told when I bought it the gun has a tendency to jam if you shoot reloaded or lighter loads to avoid this shoot the first 800 to 1000 rounds with 180 grain factory loaded bullets. This will loosen up the spring. After that I can shoot just about anything without a problem which is what I did, and the weapon has never jammed. The clips spring were so strong the manufacture included a special rod that went through the clip to pull it down so the clip can be loaded, I also slid a nail through the hole in the clip to do the same thing.
    The first time cleaning the gun when I was releasing the main spring the spring shot all the way across my house 28 feet, hit a window and broke the glass. After that I would take the gun apart inside a box with a newspaper in the bottom of the box and put a towel over the gun to keep the main spring from becoming a projectile.

    few years back (2015/16) we had a bunch of these come into the shop, were a big hit, Most of them had the same issues, however the customers that bought them noted that they did require a break in of sorts (just put lots of ammo through it, set springs & what not) extra cleaning / lube early on. the biggest thing was making sure the right Recoil springs were installed (some for 38 SPL, some for regular 357, some for 357+P) as for the mags, I believe the same, load / unload set the springs, but then you have to load them a particular way to avoid rim lock. try suspending the Gallon jugs from a rope, get areal dispersion of the target :P

      I always thought these things were cool, but the thing about revolver cartridges is the power versatility that might affect cycling in an autoloader.
      With that said, a Glock20 can do 40 s&w, 357sig, 9x25Dillon, and of course 10mm with only barrel swaps. So I suppose I am overthinking the power variance.

    Scott, the Coonan pistol can be made to be reliable if a good gunsmith does a "Fluff -n-Buff " on all the moving parts to reduce friction and the magazines have to be selected for reliability (hunt down some that work well) and then they work pretty well. The. 357 is such a long cartridge that it is not going to feed and extract/eject as easy as say 9mm. Polishing the feed ramp and chamber can help too.

    I remember reading about the Coonan in ads in gun magazines in the early 1980s and being fascinated with the concept. I think they had an ad showing a 7-round magazine and referring to it as "your seven-round speed loader" or some such.
    In the late 1980s I met an older fellow, a home gunsmith of some considerable talent. He was, I think in his late 60s at the time. He had a Coonan he'd worked on and made reliable. He had fashioned a laser site (keep in mind this was the late '80s and how unusual that was). He also took JHPs, put, IIRC, a dab of flash powder in the cavity, then a pistol primer, and shellacked it all in place. They fed fine and as one might imagine, tended to go boom when hitting anything substantial enough to mash the primer on the bullet tip. Probably not the wisest thing legally (then again, this was Coastal Alabama in the 80s so ... ) but he had put tons of work into making the whole thing work. Curiously, he did the same thing, right down to the 'splody ammo with an AMT Backup .380 too.
    Fast forward a decade and a half and a State Trooper I knew retired and went to work for a small town PD. He bought a Coonan and it worked fine. He had a kit to make it run with .38 +p but I think it was a bit finicky with the specials (and why would one want to do that anyway?).

    The Coonan is certainly a great gun to have. Since there is no cylinder gap, I've found that mine gives me about 300 FPS more than my 6" 686. I can also agree that the reliability leaves something to be desired, but usually when I have a bad match between the ammo and the recoil spring. I have 3 different recoil springs for mine. None of them will work with anything less than .38 +P. They like heavier loads for sure.

      Agree...they do need some break in and ammo compatible with the magazines. Also the 'thumbs forward' grip Scott uses is not very strong which can make an otherwise reliable gun jam.

    • @AdamWest84
      @AdamWest84 8 месяцев назад

      @recoilrob324 It almost sounds like you're suggesting Scott, the king of the wrist breakers, could possibly be limp wristing his Coonan. Obviously that can't be what you meant, right?

    • @recoilrob324
      @recoilrob324 8 месяцев назад

      @@AdamWest84 The 'thumbs forward' grip does allow the gun to move a LOT more than a stronger thumb down grip. So yes...even a big guy like Scott can 'limp wrist' when using an improper grip.
      My Coonan will work with 158 grain bullets as low as 1050 fps when held firmly...but does choke if you don't as any recoil operated pistol will.
      It seems to be mandatory on the internet to use the 'thumbs forward' grip even though it looks awkward and unless you're wearing body armor the Isosceles firing position is less than ideal.

  • @WritingFighter
    @WritingFighter 8 месяцев назад +1

    Actually, this literally was my grandpa's 1911, he carried this on the force. My dad got it from him and I thoroughly enjoyed shooting it.
    However, *be aware that the Coonan does have a tendency to break and even explode,* I think it's something to do with the piece on the barrel rubbing against the slide and ejection. This actually happened right after I used it when someone else at the range had a try. Part flew by our faces, had no idea what it was. Luckily the shooter was an expert in handguns and recognized what happened immediately and advised we not use it anymore until we got the barrel replaced, though it could still shoot afterwards, it wasn't recommended. (Fixing at the time was nigh impossible without bookoos of money for a custom job; now I think a company has picked up a production line that corrected the problem).
    As far as reliable... yes... but the Coonan is extra picky about the ammo you put through it. Can't just shove cheap stuff through it. At least ours was.

    Having had 3 Coonan 357s, I have never once had a jam or "stovepipe". I have reduced my herd to a single Coonan now, and carry it in the woods all the time. I have used only the same full-house 357 loads that I use in my revolvers, always jhp loads of differing bullet weights, and never a factory load, only my own. I have never been tempted to try Underwood ammo, since I don't use factory ammo. I routinely sight my magnum handguns at 75 yards. I realize Underwood is likely one of your sponsors, but you might consider trying another brand of quality factory ammo. I enjoy your videos, and think you just
    got a bad batch of ammo or the mag was indeed the problem. I couldn't tell, but it appeared to be an original Coonan mag, they usually have orange followers like yours.
    Best regards...

    I've got the Coonan classic in black. And then the sub compact in black. They look beautiful and they both jammed until I got about 500 rounds through which it says in the owner's manual. You need 300 to 500 rounds to get broken in. And now they're smooth as glass. So I love them. They run great for a niche type weapon.You just really have to break them in. They ship without oil. So you gotta make sure you oil 'Em good, take them apart. Put them together and run lots of ammo through. And then it starts working, and the magazines do affect it so it takes a while to find the right balance for you to be confident. I know somebody that carries the subcompact that only holds I think 6 rounds 1 in the chamber so F. YI good work very entertaining video. And very informative, especially when you shot the velocity meter.😂❤

I have a "Coonan Classic" Aka the second gen, never had a single jam in any of the three mags I have for it as long as I use something above 140 grain bullets. Also remember to NEVER use any non jacketed rounds in it, they can lead weld shut.
    Sad that the company folded somewhere in the 2020 BS and anybody that had one on order lost their money in the process. I know of 2 Gun shops that had $20,000 worth of stuff on order and got bubkiss. I also like supporting my local manufacturing and they were made not but 10 miles from where I live. Dan seemed like a really genuine guy, don't know what to make of it.

    I'm so glad you did a video on the Coonan. I want one of those someday. My hope is I could solve the reliability issues. I shot a rental at a range once. I love the fireballs these things can put out! They'll shoot 38, too if you swap out the recoil spring. Don't think I did that. But I found a forum post that reveals, if I understand correctly, that it comes with a special spring to do that, and you should only used +p loads for 38, but the guy found that spring too strong. He found instead that a wolff springs 8 lb spring worked great for it.
