Colbert has the best guests!
Nerdsync!
The absolute best!!!
she's my archaeology professor haaaa
lmao, literal soyface
@@edge1788 Lucky you.
I love when guests are genuinely passionate about what they do!
She teaches how to loot.
This is freaking fascinating.
***** Who?
gl15col I'll look that up soon, then. Thanks for the info! ^_^
***** No idea who that is.
***** I'll check it out when I have time. Thanks.
+gl15col Time team is one of my all time favorites. Ended up with almost all of the early seasons, and watching the evolution of the tech over 30 years was incredible.
I'm really digging the variety of guests Colbert is bringing :)
+Joel Rosario Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the celebs, but it's really refreshing to have some real substance in late night talk shows too!
+J. Patrick Pote True fax
Pun intended?
agree with you 110%!
ME TOO!
My favorite type of guest. We can see "stars" anywhere, but seeing the amazing and innovative people of the world is a real treat.
Oh my God, that city was INCREDIBLE! I want to be on the team that excavates it. It's so shocking, knowing that you are looking back 3,000 years to not just a few buildings, but an entire city. Can you imagine walking down those roads, imagining children from the 11th century BC running and playing, imagining the markets where farmers sold their grain, imagining your typical Ancient Egyptian just going about there day. Man, that was seriously one of the coolest archeological images I've ever seen. Another cool thing to think about is how similar that city looks to other modern middle eastern cities. God, the whole thing is just fascinating.
Thank you, Colbert, for respecting your audience's intelligence and consistently having such unique guests on your show
lmao
"The more and more I study, the more I realize that we are resilient, we are creative, we are brilliant..." - Sarah Parcak
I wonder if she ever studied youtubes comment section?
+The Plebeian I hope she does because it would be such a shame if your incredibly witty comment goes unnoticed.
Da_Most_Shady True... good point
Lol!!! Your comment cracked me up!
+The Plebeian This is literally what I thought but slightly differently. 99% of humans are dim and DUMB. It's not that humans are brilliant or resilient, it's that we have the CAPACITY to be. That's why out of billions of people there are only a handful that actually change the world, invent worthwhile things and truly contribute to humanity. The rest are just a mob of idiots doing nothing more than converting oxygen into carbon dioxide, me included.
+LulzRoyce That would include me, my family, and friends.
3:45 - You're feeling pretty good right now, aren't you?
she should've answered:
- I'm feeling like a million dollars!
Love the Ed White reference btw!
***** Most definitely!
+Anton Pospelov Thank you!!! That's exactly what I was saying to the screen haha!
Great spokeswoman for archaeology! Really made me excited.
I love that Stephen is the only one that brings out interesting people that are not celebs *for realsies* yet. Like, she won awards for her work and that is great. But the *vast* majority has no idea who she is, Stephen (and his team) don't give a fuck. And I love that.
Sarah goes from teaching about monuments to teaching stupid people how to destroy them, what great character development.
Well it's a figurehead of Terrorism, so yeah.
The enthusiasm that this chick possesses is mighty contagious...
Jodie Foster will play her in the movie. It'll probably be called something stupid like Satellite of Love.
+Steve27775 Def Leppard and Adele will do the soundtrack.
+Steve27775 And then there will be a porn parody called "Probing Hard and Digging Deep."
+Ou8y2k2 Adele did the theme for Skyfall so I can't really talk shit about her.
Zuzu Superfly I don't see the appeal of Adele. She sounds mediocre to me. The backing instruments are good though.
***** I don't know about mass appeal because it's not my kind of music. However, I don't doubt that her voice is dope and I have a sister around her age so I totally respect the degree to which Adele is just totally slaying it right now. Fair enough. Bond theme? Fuckin' hell. A good bond movie too. Shit. I love Jack White's shit but Quantum of Solace just wasn't a great film. Wasn't a huge fan of Jack's latest album either. Everything he did before his latest album is pure fire as far as I'm concerned.
These are the people that deserve a million dollars not the kardashians.
+Katie K. Thing is, you shouldnt blame the Kardashians for it necessarily. It just proves that the world has THAT many dumb people in it. Because apparently the Kardashians were able to successfully market and sell their image and celebrity to millions. They technically worked fair and square for their money. It;s the mob of morons that support them that made them millionaires. The real problem isnt a single celebrity or even a group, its just that 99% of humans are idiots with short attention spans who care more about celebrity outfits than amazing discoveries like in this video. Most also have nothing to contribute to society. Me included lol.
+LulzRoyce I personally think we can do better sociologically than elitist claims like "99% of humans are idiots."
+Katie K. golden popo deserves a million dollars
GucciBalboa What they promote is on them sure, but the reason they are famous isn't solely on them. In fact its totally not on them.
They should really look for things in Peru. We were home of the biggest empire in pre-columbian era: INCAS. Imagine all the possibilities!
We need more people like Sarah and less people like the Kardashians.
100% Agreed.
+Dinko B We have a TON of people like her. It's just hard to build up a network of people to pay attention to in order to get that impression. Kardashians are just louder and more well funded. People give them free advertisement all day long. I love the XKCD comics, but I don't even remember that guys name. I've never seen anything made by the Kardashians but I know their names because we won't shut the fuck up about them. I don't mean to be rude but you're contributing to that problem in a small way.
Zuzu Superfly We have a ton of people like her, but no where near what we should have. Talking about a problem is not equal to contributing to it.
Dinko B What numbers are you referring to?
Zuzu Superfly I am certain you can find empirical data on how many people nationwide are interested in sheep television vs. archaeology, astrophysics, engineering etc. Hnt: if more people were interested in the later, we would be having flying cars now. (don't take this literally, I'm merely proving a point)
I really appreciate that Stephen Colbert interviews intellectuals and celebrities equally
God I fucking love it when I am educated as well as entertained. I appreciate Stephen so much for having Dr Parcak on his show! I didn't have a clue about this until now -- I am so happy to learn about it!!!
I love seeing science and technology on the show. Keep it up, Mr. Colbert.
Stephen Colbert is just the best interviewer. His excitement about getting to meet and nerd out with amazing, brilliant minds like Sarah Parack is infectious!
I can't get over how incredible the picture of that city in infrared was. I've watched the video 3 times now and I'm still enamored. It's just amazing, seeing the streets of a city buried in the desert. I can almost see the children playing in the street, growing up, having kids of their own and dying, and watching the cycle repeat. It is so amazing I just can't get over it.
+George Mason She has done documentaries with the BBC. Possibly the highlight of my anthropology studies was to be in a class getting filmed by the BBC... hahaha..........
Timothy McDonald You were in her class?
Yes in 2011
Timothy McDonald That's awesome. I would have loved to be there. She taught at UA right?
And Do you remember the name of the documentary?
+George Mason yes, she still does along with her husband. there is one on RUclips called Rome Lost Empire, and I'm not sure but if it is on youtube, but there is also Egypt's Lost Cities
Oh man thank you for making so interesting questions and let her answer, AND not making fun of it! Brilliant!
I am in love, this woman is awesome!
Congrats Stephen, your show its amazing, i wish more people start rewarding the most bright in our society
How he is getting beaten by the two Jimmys is baffling to me.
StanMarsh1 Talking politics divides the viewers.
+StanMarsh1 This interview is exactly why he is being beaten by the two Jimmys . I just hope CBS respects his talents and our interests enough to not care.
Coz people wanna see lip sync battles, guests egging eachother and something simple minded like that.
+StanMarsh1 They've been around for a long time so they've built up a base, because at the time there was nothing better so people grew to love them. Still hate fallon though.
+StanMarsh1 because one plays patty cake and guess who and the other steals candy from babies, not intellectually engaging conversations
Keep bringin the science, Stephen!
I'm so glad I watched this interview. She is amazing!
I love how he has super interesting guests. Not just celebrities.
Dr. Parcak is one of the most fascinating people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her energy and passion are infectious. She was my professor for one semester at UAB, and I am beyond excited for her win! Everyone read up on her TED Prize wish that she announced on Tuesday!
Wow I want to work with someone as passionate as this woman
Discovery and preservation. A worthy goal.
I can't describe how happy I am that Colbert actually let her explain how the method works. I can see that it caught her off-guard to try to explain the technical stuff for a wider audience but she did great! More like this!!!!
Well done showcasing pioneers like Sarah Parcak. The world is not all about film stars.
I love Stephen's show. This woman is doing amazing work and I've never even heard of her or all the stuff she's found. And I love how excited he always gets to have these conversations with incredibly smart people!
a real 21st century Indiana Jones. amazing.
Ladies and gentleman, THIS is a talk show. THIS is an interview! Thank you Stephen for inviting wonderful people like this!
OK, the Nobel Prize amount should increase
this woman is just awesome. enjoyed listening to her. we need more people like her on tv!
I worked in her lab at UAB and learned so many cool applications for remote sensing research. Sarah is THE best! Loved working with her. This was a great interview.
an amazing woman
Cool guest. Keep bringing the experts in science Stephen.
She's a fellow Mainer! So proud!!
Btw, this technology is called **Hyperspectral Remote Sensing** in case you're interested...
+hamsterpoop Thank you! I am interested! ^_^
Sarah Parcak should publicly apologize to Jimmy Corsetti of Bright Insight for using his work without giving him credit.
I first learned about Sarah from an episode of the You're Dead To Me podcast and I've been searching for every interview with her that I can find....
Amazing cant wait till we discover under the ground
Thank you Miss Sarah Parcak
Seeing her enthusiasm is just fantastic :)
This is what the world needs colbert.
love this woman, love this clip, love that the comment section is so overwhelmingly positive. the chlorophyll thing is really striking-- so simple and brilliant.
I found a dollar in the parking lot at work tonight, and bought a Snickers out the snack machine. Yeah, I get to wear the hat.
wow what a brilliant women. good job Steve.
Better than a celebrity promoting their next movie. I like how Colbert just throws out Genghis Khan's tomb as a possible holy grail for remote sensing. Shows he's probably aware of the Valley of the Khans project.
Wish her class had been this energetic, instead I got 300 slide powerpoints and a documentary a week to watch. Though this is truly a fascinating topic. Congrats Dr. Parcak and Go Blazers!
Huge props to Colbert for having inspiring nerds on his program. The endless parade of vapid entertainers is demoralizing. Bring on more enthusiastic nerds!
this lady is impressive. no words.
As an Archaeologist myself, I am excited to see how popular our research can get! I will also be working as a Landscape Archaeologist studying borderlands. Maybe will have the chance to meet her in the future :)
W-O-W.
This is by far the coolest thing I've seen all year.
She deserves a medal. ... or a million dollars.
Thank you Steven. Your late night format/guest choice has allowed me to see things I might never have gone out of my way to see. This is so fascinating.
Every time I'm about to completely lose faith in humanity, I discover people like Sarah Parcak.
We need a thousand more celebrities just like Sarah Parcak
It makes me so happy that Colbert is having interesting guests like this on his show.
This is actually really important, not just for historical purposes, but imagine how lucrative it is at attracting tourists!
Wow didn't know Ted prize is as much as Nobel prize...
+deranged Nobel is more, especially if you count the medal itself.
Easily my favorite guest on TLS so far. Definitely the most fascinating.
can I just say....COOLEST JOB EVER!
I believe Colbert said "spectrography" where "spectroscopy" would've likely been what he was referring to, but regardless I'm very impressed. Most talk show hosts wouldn't know either of those words.
In the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tanis is said to be the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, which was hidden in a secret chamber called the Well of Souls. Tanis is fictitiously described as having been buried by a sand storm until 1936, when it was discovered by a German expedition outside Cairo. In reality, Tanis was the site of numerous archaeological digs beginning in the 19th century...
My mind is blown with this interview.
Okay it's official, Stephen's nerdiness is REAL, I knew he was a LOTR fan, and then I found out he was also a Star Wars fan, and NOW it turns out he's also an Indiana Jones fan.
I was hoping Harrison Ford would run on stage, grab the sat image and yell....this should be in a museum! Then grab the hat and run off.
She gave the human race a compliment. That's something you don't hear everyday. I actually got goosebumps and felt good.
She has spent YEARS trying to convince the Archeology community that this works and is a thing that is of worth. It is good to finally see her efforts pay off in the tech and science community.
This woman is incredible
Dr. Parcak does UAB proud! Go Blazers!
This is so awesome!
Tanis was already known where it was for over 100 years BUT she really did find how vast it was.
She was my Pr's student and she said Sarah didn't find Tanis with a satellite. The French was already excavating the city for years before her and now she exaggerates everything and gets all the credits. My Pr. even said she doesn't know much. She even lied that she was the first to find a pyramid when the Egyptians was excavating for three years already. So they got mad and kicked her out of the team. I was really fascinated of this video when I first watched it few years ago now.....well... I'm quite disappointed.
She deserves more than 1 million dollars
This is amazing. Love to see people like this on talk shows.
this lady is FUCKIN' AWESOME!!!... enough said.
Wonderful interview. Shame this stuff isn't doing well in the ratings :(
+Tenniscoachno1897650 I think he's pulling second, just ahead of Kimmel. Unfortunately, Fallon has already become a comfort zone for a lot of people.
I heard he had slipped behind Kimmel and Meyers.
+Tenniscoachno1897650 Only temporary. I'm guessing it was one of the weeks where he was running reruns after taking a week off
He's wayyyy up in the ratings now :)
One of the best interviews ever! So interesting and exciting! Never knew of her before, but I sure do now.
Message to Sarah Parcak
please could you find a way to to get your scans as a plug in for Google Earth. so we can look at these and explore ourselves.
Sites I would love that you explored:
Antartica
Amazon ( City of Gold ) or whatever lost civilization.
+agriperma she looks at the differences in vegetation, wouldn't it be trickier to find something in Antarctica?
Erick Machado She uses other tactics, like Infrared etc. Tunis for example is under the sand in the desert, as you can see from the before and after pictures, its obviously not about vegetation there.
NASA a few years back was able to confirm that North Africa at one time had a huge river, even bigger than the Amazon. all underground now. they used some kind of ground penetrating radar.
This wouldn't be a good idea as we'd have alot more looting and destruction of these ancient sites that need to be preserved well and professionally
She seems to be reciting off a pre-memorised speech. Like maybe her TED speech. But I appreciate the effort in that. But she could also chill and talk conversationally.
Serious scientist crush. Amazing human being. Fascinating interview! Love it.
I've always wanted to be an archaeologist, ever since I was little!!! This is so amazing!! Thank you Stephen!
I'm literally crying tears of joy.
I wonder if they can scan the sea in the same way, seeing that ice ages have exposed terrain that now is underwater
space archaeologist? river song, is that you?
i always wondered if this would be possible by satellite and now i know... just never thought the discoverys would be in the millions... truely am amazed by this
You are admirable, you are amazing, thank god you exist.
This is Literally amazing.
Wow this woman's amazing. Awesome
She's a space archeologist and so can you!
Genius! I love her.
What an intelligent, amazing woman. This is fascinating.
Such wonderful variety!
Sooooo incredible. Got me buzzing, yo.
Not being from the USA,I really appreciate this youtube channel
'Merica ✌️
Holy shit I was enthralled by this woman's genuine enthusiasm, stirred in with a large helping of actual scientific-historical advancement, and the added dash of actually well funded grant money to remind myself what it's there for.
If there was ever a time to drop you shit and become an archeologist, nows the time I guess.
Indeed, now is certainly the time.
The reason Fallon is ahead in the ratings is that most of the people staying up late enough to watch this show are teenagers and 20 somethings who dig the celebrities and popular culture that Fallon celebrates. I think Stephen will eventually draw these people in once they see the variety of musical guests he's bringing on the show. A lot of them have large followings among that younger set.
