Joel's Army: William Branham's Militant Christianity

  • Joel’s Army was a militant extremist version of Christianity birthed from the Manifest Sons of God doctrines of William Branham after his very popular revivals in the late 1940s, and one of the foundational elements of the New Apostolic Reformation today. At the point in time when the healing revivals intersected with the Latter Rain revivals, leaders in the movement frequently referred to the second chapter of the Old Testament book of Joel as their proof text, redirecting its prophecy from its original context of ancient Israel to that of modern times by alleging that key phrases within the chapter symbolically pointed to the 20th century. The “day of the darkness” (Joel 2:2) was repurposed to mean “End of Days,” the “northern army” (Joel 2:20) referred to “Russia”. (Joel 2:3) referred to the World Wars, and verses 21 through 25 became the proof text used to declare the movement’s authority and position as “spiritually elite” compared to the rest of Christianity.
This militant stance against what they considered to be “cold formal religion” (mainstream Christianity) became a central theme within the Healing Revival, and eventually the traditional and even less formal denominations of Christian faith were given the disparaging label. Members of mainstream Christianity were viewed as cold and formal by leaders of the movement that used Branham’s doctrine in their sermons. Even Pentecostals who did not join in the movement were labeled “cold and formal”. The authoritative view of new religious teachings and predictions as God’s Spoken Word gave rise to the notion that God Himself was being made manifest through these new self-appointed apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.

That video you made that showed how WMB and Jones were linked and preached so many of the same things was incredible!!! It blew me away. They both find ways to belittle God--that god couldn't conquer an army because it had iron chariots and that Jesus never spoke anything into existence--He just changed water into wine or change a little bit of fish and bread into a lot of fish and bread, but WMB spoke squirrels into existence out of nothing.
That Todd Bentley guy is scary, so is the whole Joel's Army thing. I know the Southern Poverty Law Center has been following them for a while. Isn't it interesting how much death follows in the footsteps of WMB's so called"message". Jonestown. Colonia Dignidad. "The Park" in Prescott AZ. Keith Loker left that place and killed some people and now he's on death row. Death, Death, Death--and now Joel's Army. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that there have more deaths than that that follow in his footsteps. Jesus came to bring life. WMB brought death.

I was in a NAR-ish charismatic church between.. 2004-2011....my pastor was discipled by Larry Randolph (one of the writers of the physics of heaven with bill johnson)... anyway - I know I heard of the manifest sons of God and there is a Jason Upton song who talks about 'raising up an army like Joel saw'. Thanks for explaining this and other things - Without getting into too much here - i've been trying to piece together what I remember with what type of theology i've been taught and videos like this is helpful. Watched the vid with Steven Kozar today - very helpful.

@kevin Noneya I don't know much about your religion, but I thought it was taught that Jesus was a prophet, but not the Son of God in Islam. To be honest, I didn't read your whole comment, but the last thing you sited, Quran 17:7 sounds very much like a works based salvation. No one is good enough to work their way into heaven. The only way into heaven is through the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son.

      Without question, no.
A "true" prophet is considered to be such if ALL his prophecies, including every detail, are correct. Not only did William Branham himself admitted to having had failed prophecies (ex: India prophecy), he openly admitted that his campaign team was adjusting them to "bring them up to date".
Branham himself altered most of them, and a majority were not "prophecy" at all -- they were claimed as such long after the events happened. Not to mention that his historical accounts of how these prophecies came have been proven to be complete fiction.

@@estherbarasa595 John Collins can answer this question much better than I can. Branham claimed to be the fulfillment of Malachi 4 and several other Bible passages. Yet he did nothing to fulfill those passages. You asked for a Bible passage--Deuteronomy 18:21-22 explains to God's people how you tell a false prophet from a true prophet. A true prophet's prophesies come to pass. I don't know how much you know about what Branham prophesied, but one, and only one false or failed prophesy is all it takes to be a false prophet. He said "Thus Saith the Lord" sharks would be swimming where downtown LA is before his son, Billy Paul, was an old man. Because California would fall off the edge of the country into the ocean. Has California fallen off into the ocean? No. Are there sharks swimming where downtown LA used to be? No. Is Billy Paul an old man? Yes--he is 87 years old. Is William Branham a false prophet according to Deuteronomy 18? Yes. He is a false prophet. There is so much more. So many failed prophesies. On top of that, just because someone claims to be something, but does not do what that thing is, where is the proof? I could claim to have green skin, but I don't.
John Collins' site is full of so much more that proves how false and destructive Branham's teachings were. Please take the time to explore it. The links under the video will take you there. Please, don't believe the lies Branham spread. You deserve God's truth, not a false prophet's lies.
