Now I see people in the comments saying that the fighting is dumbed down. The way I see it, its easy to earn but hard to master. The design is novice players can pick this game up and learn the controls without complex systems then over time learn all the fine points of combat. And all fighters don't have to be complex games with multiple systems. So for those that can do 50 hit combos or can do any of those awesome moves, just think about that new player who might have never played a fighter before.
oskulock This is a stupid thing to say. IGN doesn't start out giving games a 10/10 and then take off points as they find cons. They give a score based on their overall impressions of a game. Pros and cons may or may not actually factor into that. Can you really not grasp the idea of not finding any real negatives with a game, but still not considering it the level of absolute perfection that a 10/10 demands? Once you get past a score of like 8.5, it becomes a lot less about what the game did wrong, and a lot more about how well the game did the things it did right.
dragoniguana Thank you. People just dont understand the notion that a game can have no inherent flaws but still not reach a "perfect score". Games dont get reviewed like math tests do were if you make no mistakes you dont get points deducted. For a game to deserve a 10 it needs to be truly special. Which is why 10s are handed out fairly rarely.
Wow this must be the best IGN game review to date. This guy knows how to review. Never played a Persona game before but I have played BlazBlue, so I gotta try this out looks really fun.
this is the first fighting game I'm getting and it's solely because of the persona twist, I'm even excited to learn playing a new genre I usually ignore!
Ark system works makes some pretty amazing fighting games. Between Guilty Gear and BlazBlue they have proven to me that they know what their doing. Besides you have to love the attention to detail with each character and how they go out of their way to make sure that each one feels unique both in design and in how they control. I can't wait to get this game!!!
I was really surprised at the quality of this game, In my opinion this is a Fantastic entry into the Persona series even if it isn't a JRPG. I had so much Nostalgia while playing as the Cast of Persona 3
As someone who's loving Persona 4 Golden but generally struggles with fighting games beyond Tekken, is this worth getting? I think it looks awesome and as long as you don't need to be some Street Fighter pro who can remember eight billion combos I'd like to get it.
I would say go for it, there is a auto combo system where you can continuously press X to unleash a full combo for beginners. Also its worth it just to have more Persona 4 story!
No I wouldn't say so, I'm about halfway though the story mode and no Persona 3 characters have shown up so they might not even be in the story, just playable characters. It does pay to have finished Persona 4 though
Metripleone If you get the chance play persona 3. Persona 4 was very happy in tone compared to persona 3. The philosophical views in persona 3 have been with me since I played it. You might not like the system unless you play the portable version.
In the original Persona 3 versions (Original and FES), you can walk/run around places, but in the PSP version, there's nothing like that except during the climb up to Tartarus where there are 3D models. The PS2 versions also has animated cutscenes, while the PSP version only uses pictures of those same cutscenes with dialog boxes. Well, just keep playing Persona 3 and 4. You'll love both of them either way. ;) Persona 4 Arena is a must-get after you finish both games. ;)
+rfp415 Sorry if this reply is late but I recommend you get Ultimax instead as it comes with the P4A story as DLC only for 10 bucks. Though the original game is as cheap as 10 dollars too so in the end I guess its up to you
Pleasantly surprised to see such a good review for this game, it deserves it! 10/10 from me. Amazing game, with amazing mechanics, amazing visuals, and still a deeply moving story.
Controls are pretty similar to guilty gear, the exception being the new autocombos that you can perform by just tapping the A button repeatedly. It's in there so that people who are new to fighting games can actually pull off something without having to spend time in training mode. It works, but it's rarely the best option.
This is a late comment and all But someone please help me here ^^ Will directly playing P4 Arena without playing the original P4 going to affect? I am both a story as well as fighting fan so will it be a SIGNIFICANT effect? Or something which will not affect my experience much? Part of this is because I dont have enough money to buy a Vita JUST for P4G .... But I have heard that the Ps3 version of P4 is simply a Ps2 port.... So another question- Is the port on PS3 fine? I mean just because I wont get Golden, it will be fine at its core right?
hetment yes, persona 4 arena is a sequel. You would not understand nothing of the story if you haven't played persona 4.You should buy a ps vita it has good games and persona 4 is longer than 70 hours, and has more content than the original.
sasukes2938 I see.... Thanks for the reply... Well... I cant afford a PS vita as well as many games for it , since it's HELL expensive in my country.... Maybe I will get that PS2 export in PS3 ( the one for 10$).. Will need to think more on this one Another question please- I have heard P4Arena is region locked? Is it true? I mean... I live in India. So having a Ps3 bought in India, will I be able to play P4 Arena or it wont allow me to play since it needs North American PS3?
sasukes2938 Ah I see.... Thanks for answering ^^ I will ask about that localization stuff elsewhere too... And damn... Atlus should release P4 golden on PS3 already lol xD Hmm.,... Is that 'true ending' VERY different from original P4?
Is this game on pc. I have a vita with persona 4 golden and also persona 4 dancing all night. I play persona 1 and 3 on my phone and persona 2 on the vita. i need to know if this is on pc if so where can i get it?
To everyone who may be watching this vid right now, this game has been marked down to 9.98 (with tax it's actually 10.87) on the Xbox Live's Marketplace. Please note that you must have GOLD Membership to take advantage of this markdown. Overall, for this price, I think it is worth a buy.
lol I'm pretty sure it was because they were probably still thinking about how to make up a background story for both of them. Like what they did the past two or three years after P3. P4 is set two years after P3.
Are there any kind of extra modes? I'm thinking of picking it up just for the story mode but still...this review was good but it didn't tell me much about the modes of the game
Switching up genres is fine, as long as the studio knows what it's doing, and by collaborating with Arc System works, Atlus knew what they were doing. By making this game into a fighter, it was able to gather people unaware of the series to it, and given the reputation this game is getting, Persona is finally starting to get decently well known. And besides, the game's awesome either way :P
It takes about 6 months of work to develop, draw, balance and add voice to a character. Blazblue Started with 13 too so for a game that probably won't be getting a sequel, I think it's fine. Maybe we'll get DLC with some luck.
...Because I am also a BlazBlue fan, and the way P4A has the buttons laid out in such a way, when I'm so used to going, A->B->C->D, I end up messing up a combo because, again, I'm used to the other layout. It's a matter of getting used to the game and exploring the more accessible depth the game has to offer. In the end, it all comes down to the metagame, and Persona 4 Arena looks to have a much more accessible and easier metagame.
What happened to P4 Golden's epilogue? I don't see their changes at all being represented. Most obviously Kanji. He also failed to mention P3 cast being in the game
Does anybody know what remix to Aria of the Soul is playing at 3:43? I think it actually starts playing during the verdict but it's not very clear until the end.
Have this game, easily the best fighter I've ever played. I've never been able to enjoy any other fighting game, either they're too complicated, or they feel kind of lifeless... But this game? Game of the year for me so far, which I'm sure will change, but still, fantastic game.
it's not manny times that IGN make good reviews, mostly they criticize too much and the game gets under or overrated. this is the first review in a long time from IGN which I agree on how the score is and that this is plane out a fantastic game. Great Review IGN, hope you'll keep up the fine review work from now on.
I've played Guilty Gear on the PS2 before, and while I loved the style, I found the controls to be a big stiff, so I didn't really play it too much. Are the controls pretty similar, or are they easier to use, as in Capcom Vs. Marvel?
yeaH dude, i was looking for it on PSN under "P" for persona and it wasnt there..then it hit me one night before i went to sleep that it might be under S for Shin Megami. now whats the difference between p3 and FES?
Just to be clear with everyone... there six Characters in the Arena sequel... Junpei, Yukari, Rise Kujikawa, Ken Amada, Sho Minazuki and Sho Minazuki... and a Day 1 DLC... ADACHI
I take it you think the only thing separating pro players from lower players is combos? The Auto-combo system is for a casual players who may not have any intent on learning the complex combos but still want to be able to do something when they play the game. The auto-combos are FAR from the most optimal combos
dont worry this games combos are gennerely easy and the game has a tutorial mode that teaches you just about everything. i've played a lot of fighting games and i can honestly say this one is pretty easy to get into. if you really feel like giveing it a try go for it
i was skeptical with this game at first.. cause i am a persona series fans!! i love rpg and fighting both but to change one genre to another doesnt seem like a good idea.. but just bought it the other day and i CANT STOP PLAYING!!! this game is must have for persona fans for the story is great!! definitely worth the name persona!! and fighting genre lovers should play this game too!!! cause its freakin fun to play!!!
yeah i just downloaded it last night and played about 3 hours and so far it's looking really good. ofc, playing it right after i finished P4 (now, my all-time favorite game), i was disappointed that some it didnt have some of the features p4 had. looks like ill be under a rock for the next week or so.
Fighting games are one of the few genres that remain really hard for a casual player to get into. ESPECIALLY if the game has hard combos or makes it's basics really hard to grasp. Unlike the 90s where most players would suck it up and learn, now they are more likely to quit the game and blacklist fighters as "way too hard". Companies want money, so excluding people isn't a smart business practice. Hence why, games in general are easier and why fighting games are getting easier.
even then i would still highly recommend this game, its actually very addicting. I havent played the story yet becausei dont want spoilers for persona 4 since i havent finished the game yet so i cant say anything about that. i kinda wish junpei, yukari, koromaru, and ken were playable
P3 has a darker and deeper plot than P4, in my opinion. Once you get to the end of P3 and FES, you'll see what I mean. But that doesn't mean that P4 isn't deep. ;) Wait, which version of P3 are you playing? The original? The FES (original + sequel)? The PSP version?
When did I say I wanted things to be easy for me? I fare pretty well in most fighting games, guilty gear included. I wasn't talking about myself, I was talking about other people who have no experience in fighting games and want a fun and accessible way to start and learn from. There isn't anything wrong with that, games are supposed to be fun.
Yes, and the reason for that is that the Yen is strong while the USD is weak. The NA verson and the JP verson are identical and Atlus don't want people in Japan to import it from US.
Oh, jeez, don't even get me started. Have you ever played Amaterasu in UMVC3? You can practically hold forward and keep pressing heavy attack and get six hits right off the bat to start a chain combo. That game is the MOTHER of easy combos.
How does the combo system work? Is it fluid like MvC3? Is it character specific, meaning that I have to use different input strings for different characters? Does it utilize a lot of mechanics like 'just guard', 'guard break', etc. You know those kind of mechanics that add depth/complexity to fighting games..
***** I'm not gonna lie, your explanation was quite intriguing indeed. So much so, I actually went and got myself a copy. I'm gonna start playing it sometime this weekend for sure. Based on the little I've seen of it so far in this video, it looks like a lot of fun. Also, coming from a Street Fighter background, it would be nice to get something new on board and mix things up a bit. Thanks a million for taking the time and effort to give me this much info on the title..Much appreciated..
Tuffadandem I do recommend you check out Blazblue calamity trigger, if you're interested in story game told through a fighting game with awesome fighting system. Both Persona 4 arena and Blazblue are under same developer
I'm a simple person when it comes to fighting games. I only need one of every genre. One tag team game, one 2 fighter, one based on mix ups, etc. Blazblue Extend fills my quota for a good 2D fighter so I'm not getting any more until Chrono Phantasma comes out. Besides, I already have too many fighting games for console and vita put together.
I have a chinese PS3 , does it mean that i won't be able to play the U.S version ? Please reply ASAP if you can , i really REALLY want to play this game T.T
Comon Atlus, port this to Vita already
Oh damn this is a time capsule comment..
Lets just say we don’t talk about vita anymore....
PS vita is dead. Bury it.
XD
@@noncanon_event got a couple more months
We took a L waiting

Me: I beleve that the proper term would be *an All-Out Attack!*

I love it when there's a ad about the game before the video about the game
Your basic IGN review.
Absolutely no cons in the review, give it a 9/10.
oskulock This is a stupid thing to say. IGN doesn't start out giving games a 10/10 and then take off points as they find cons. They give a score based on their overall impressions of a game. Pros and cons may or may not actually factor into that.

I really wonder why did you go out of your way just to write a comment so long and pointless. Might as well not even reply to it.

+oskulock You suck
ign did this with ratchet and clank hd collection as well
I don't know why i got this in my recommendation but I'd love to see atlus make this kind of game using characters from Persona 1-5
Normal people:they use persoans in this game
Jojo fans:they use stands but not stands in this game
Man. Akihiko is so fucking cool.
Wow this must be the best IGN game review to date. This guy knows how to review. Never played a Persona game before but I have played BlazBlue, so I gotta try this out looks really fun.
When IGN gets a reviewer with more than half his brain cells.
and for people who are wondering what the sings are, its the battle for everyone's souls for persona 3
This worth buying as a collector that buys good to amazing games only... I saw it for $5, but, didn't think a persona fighter would be good...
this is the first fighting game I'm getting and it's solely because of the persona twist, I'm even excited to learn playing a new genre I usually ignore!

Now that Person 4 Golden is on PC, time to port this one as well.
The developer of this game was Arc System Works.
"I hope you like style" lol idk why but that made me laugh.

Persona 5 is in production now.
Doing an auto-combo does recoverable damage to you (it shows up as blue on your HP). But if you get hit, you lose all blue damage.
Yukari and Junpei are gonna be DLCs, I have this gut feeling.
To Vita! Please, Atlus?
If not this, then possibly P4A: Ultimax :D
That would be all my dreams becoming a reality

this your first actual review bravo bravo ign
New character design of Akihiko is awesome.
Just got this game today and already love it. It was worth every penny.
If only they had maybe added a mode where you can use any character to fight iconic bosses from both games(eg Nyx or Izanami), that'd be awesome!
Picture your inner self. Your alter ego...your persona
It takes about 6 months of work to develop, draw, balance and add voice to a character.
Blazblue Started with 13 too so for a game that probably won't be getting a sequel, I think it's fine. Maybe we'll get DLC with some luck.
@HonestToCritic Aigis, Akihiko, and Mitsuru are in the game, didn't you watch the review?

Golden's epilogue happens AFTER both Arena games... Yosuke even mentions "the craziness during May"
***** I realised that after I started it.
Does anybody know what remix to Aria of the Soul is playing at 3:43? I think it actually starts playing during the verdict but it's not very clear until the end.

why would you say that, it will only make him feel important when he only deserves to be ignored.
The FGC underestimates the importance of story. When used properly, it can be the absolute most important concept of the game.
Yeah I had the same problem the first couple of days. But after a while, you learn how to really punish people for trying to mash the A button.
it's not manny times that IGN make good reviews, mostly they criticize too much and the game gets under or overrated.
this is the first review in a long time from IGN which I agree on how the score is and that this is plane out a fantastic game.
Great Review IGN, hope you'll keep up the fine review work from now on.
what happened to the IGN reviews section? the last review there is the walking dead episode 2! Please update it IGN
i haven't really finished P4 yet .. so will it spoils anything if i played this game?

@@armedlove14 Thanks for the nudge! For anyone else that hasn't heard - apparently it's out 17th March 2022 (Steam, PS4 and Switch)

I wish Arc put this much care into Blazblue. It really deserves it.
for the people who already played this game (and blazblue offcourse) is it easyer to pick up / learn then blazblue? (sorry for bad english)
yeah i just downloaded it last night and played about 3 hours and so far it's looking really good. ofc, playing it right after i finished P4 (now, my all-time favorite game), i was disappointed that some it didnt have some of the features p4 had. looks like ill be under a rock for the next week or so.
First. Re release in March 2022 boysssss!
Does it matter if I start the Persona series with this game? Or will it confuse me?
Should i get this game? I have p4g and loved it but im not really into fighting games
Looks good but think I'll wait till the price drops picking up Persona 5 straight away though when that come out.
Fighting games are one of the few genres that remain really hard for a casual player to get into. ESPECIALLY if the game has hard combos or makes it's basics really hard to grasp. P3 has a darker and deeper plot than P4, in my opinion. Once you get to the end of P3 and FES, you'll see what I mean. But that doesn't mean that P4 isn't deep. ;)
Wait, which version of P3 are you playing? The original? The FES (original + sequel)? The PSP version?
yeah, another reason why it is locked is because the release dates on the consoles are only a week apart from each other
I dont usually like 2d fighters for their lack of style and attack variety but this one looks unique. Like it breaks those stereotypes.
I've never seen any game demand more skill than Blazblue, especially when it comes to Unlimited Mars or challenges.
it's like a modern sister to jojo's bizarre adventure
Yup, that's some real stand up grammar you have there sir, it most definitely makes your opinion more valid to me
Yes, and the reason for that is that the Yen is strong while the USD is weak.
P4 Arena, Tekken Tag 2, DOA5...this is a good year for the fighting game fan
Exactly! If they have anymore characters in the series of the game it would kill it. I'm glad someone understands.
Ah, didn't read the rest of your convo.
Ok so coming from years of Street Fighter from Vanilla to Ultra, what's the learning curve on this game gonna be like?
I went to buy this game but its not out. Anyone know its release date in Australia?
I'm a simple person when it comes to fighting games. I only need one of every genre. One tag team game, one 2 fighter, one based on mix ups, etc. Blazblue Extend fills my quota for a good 2D fighter so I'm not getting any more until Chrono Phantasma comes out. Besides, I already have too many fighting games for console and vita put together.
I have a chinese PS3 , does it mean that i won't be able to play the U.S version ? Please reply ASAP if you can , i really REALLY want to play this game T.T
this dude should review more games especially jrpgs since we didnt get a tales of graces f review
At least BB isn't a game where you can randomly mash buttons and win. Even on Stylish mode you need to know what you're doing a little bit.
Finally out in the UK off to get it today.... I hope my local game has a copy...
Good point. I did indeed say it looked as good as BB on the outside, but that was just me giving an opinion, not saying it was anything less or more.
That's because, by default, points are deducted if it does not have the words "Call of Duty" in the title.
