Shame the game was such a snooze. Series has more or less died post FF9 (12 wasn't bad) sphere grid in ten should have been illegal lol. 15 felt like DMC combat with a boy band entourage. Hoping 16 ends up better,Persona has been the better JRPG for awhile now IMO.
I really like this game. The graphics, the music, the dynamic characters, the fun battle system. I’ve put in 70 hrs and I’m still not done, once the game opened up the completionist in me wanted to see it all. The only thing is the combat becomes just a little tired towards the end. It’s still fun, I just wish there was something else to do besides run from one fight to another
Anime OtakuF FFX was only linear untill you defeat sin on the ship, afterwards the game opens up. Multiple sidequests, celestial weapons, beast arena and more. All this is about 50 hours extra content, oh and dark aeons and Penance too.
FF10 wasn't anywhere near as linear as this. You had towns and shops from the beginning. And after a certain point a few hours in, it was much more open open. FF13 didn't open up till near the end, and it wasn't even close to FF10
+A_Lamia_ With_Aids Tell one singel thing thats better in FF13 than in FFX, beside the Grafik. In FFX you have better levelup system with more freedom, better story, much better combat system with much more control. Oh and in FFX you could also go backward until macalania, it's possible to go back to besaid if you want, then comes a bit story, but as soon you are on the calm lands the game is open again, you can deside if you want to hunt monster for the farm, if you want to get the bonus aeon Yojinbo, and and and... FF13 dosen't even let you switch party members until near the end of the game...
Honestly one of the only reasons I didn't give this one a shot is because all the characters look lame as hell. FFX had the badassness of Auron, Lulu and Kimahri. This game has poser hipster blonde guy complete with beanie/facial hair combo, Willis from different strokes and a handful of generic bubbly anime girls.
+Richard Watson Serously not? Maybe becose the story suckd, or at least comes nowhere close to 7 and 10... maybe becose it let's you no freedom at all (can only level up to a certain point, can't switch party members, can't go back, the game even desides for you which attack it does...) Even if you don't agree with them, you can't tell me you don't see why. You are like the guys how said they don't believe in clima change, they do believe they just don't care, like you, you do understand, you just decided you didn't want to.
***** I never said I didn't like 8 or 10's story. 10 is probably my overall favourite final fantasy. I'm just saying if you invested the time and read the data log entries the story makes about as much sense as any other final fantasy story. People often end Square games confused if they don't have a fair ability to read between the lines. Does that make them bad games? Data logs are your friend and they're there to help explain one of the more complex universes square has developed.
I bought this game off a clearance shelf without playing any other final fantasy game and finished the story in about 70 hours and if I'm honest I didn't find a single thing wrong with it. I also picked up FF XIII-2 and had the same opinion of that too. Don't know if it's Stockholm syndrome, I have the ability to sit through 100+ hours of shit or the games were actually good.
They're actually good, so many people hate the game just because it's super linear, and they say the combat is bad, but I always really enjoyed the game and loved the fast paced combat. But everyone is allowed to have their opinion, even if I disagree with the people who don't like the game.
I presume if you never experienced the previous ones... getting "impressed" may not be as hard as for those who could almost predict what cliches and empty dialogues would come from each char highly detailed-animated mouth....
People in 2010: This game is linear so it's bad. Open world games are the future. 13 years and a million open world games later: You know what? Maybe we overreacted.
FF13 is my favourite because I just loved the whole game, the gameplay, the story especially, the characters and the scenery! It had the whole package, and I personally just loved it.
Ok, I want to speak honest and clear about this game. First thing I want to point out is that FFXIII is the first (and only) FF game I've played, but I do know a thing or two about previous installments. As for my experience, I enjoyed it. Yes, I was annoyed about the constant grinding and linearity that is uncharacteristic of these games (mabye not the grinding, but definetely the linearity), but I wasn't hurt over this thanks to the beautiful and detailed landscapes and the incredible soundtrack. I am aware of the change in gameplay that this game has made but, while being new to the series, it felt ok, and the inclusion of the Paradigms was definetely interesting. For what is presented to me, it's ok. Also keep in mind that Square Enix took a huge gamble here that maybe didn't pay off as they'd hoped, but it wasn't bad. In fact, what I liked the was the story and background info. Overdramatic? Yes. Conveluted and confusing? Maybe, but certainly moving. It's just sad how the story makes so many turns it's confusing, but once you understand it, it's marvelous. Not to mention the logs on history, locales, enemies, characters, etc, it really described well the world, and that's what I'd expect from a FF game: An interesting story with good development. I'm not trying to defend it, I'm just stating my opinion. Maybe people should stop looking for bad things in games, or stop expecting the same thing from a series over and over, it makes it stale. Just look at CoD, as an example. I aim to enjoy the game, and I did. If you had the same goal and still didn't like it, then there's nothing I can say. But if you criticize it having not played the game or had a different purpose, I beg you to reconsider. It's not great, but it's not bad either. In fact, thanks to this, not only do I want to play XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, but also try out the rest of the games in the franchise, which I'm sure I will have a good time playing.
I enjoyed reading this comment more than the video, thanks for taking the time to write it. I've found myself in a similar situation, where i've tried FFX for vita (first FF game for me) and ended up enjoying it a lot. Now i'm here looking into more FF ;P sounds like we have a lot of great RPG's ahead of us!
What's weird is that it may or may not even be considered "grinding". Grinding is generally going overboard when it comes to gaining experience so you can have high stats. This game limits how high you can raise your stats at any given time until you beat the game. That is, even the battle system, the core of the gameplay, is linear. Every time you play this game will be the same experience. The only decision-making you're doing is choosing your paradigm settings, and even then it's somewhat limited; only certain combinations work against some combinations of enemies. "Wait until Chapter 11 of 13 before you quit" means "This game is a straight line."
+Hasan Wawan Final Fantasy 13 is fun....if you mainly just care about the story. If you're in it for story and characters, then fine. The game looks great, it would make a nice movie. But if you're in it for..ya know.. the game part of it. Then it's fairly boring. What pisses me off, is that I always see people defending the game with "Oh but it opens up around chapter 11". Forgetting the fact that the game's only 13 chapters long. Ignoring that you had to play through 10 chapters of hallways and cutscenes before getting to what the game SHOULD have been from the start.
+Hasan Wawan You're in denial, I played all of them and XIII wasn't perfect but it's not bad either I thought it was interesting and fresh. Personally I thought final fantasy 2 was the worst.
I didn't like this game much when it first came out. Returned to it when it came out for PC and really digged into the combat system. There is so much more depth there than you'd expect at first and it actually became one of my favorite Final Fantasy games in the series! Don't really understand why people say FFXIII-2 is such a big improvement as that was actually the most frustrating FF I've ever finished.
Have no idea what people are talking about. Been a long time FF fan and I enjoyed FF13. I loved to combat and the story of this game, but we all have different opinions I guess.
It is very rare to find a comment like yours, but when i do i really enjoy it. Personally i will never understand why people always say "FF13 doesn't deserve the title of a FF-Game", "Shit story, shit gameplay etc etc". I can accept when someone says that he didn't like it, but the constant "omg, this is so shit, you're dumb if you like this game" is getting on my nerves. So thank you for this comment, it shows me that i'm not alone out there with my love for ALL FF-Games :)
Christian Stachl agreed. FF13 and other FF's are all unique and wonderful. People say square enix has lost its touch, but I don't think that's the case. I think the fans have just become big fat cry babies and spout out bandwagon hate comments like "this game is too linear" etc, etc. Shit, now and days people even cry if a game isn't 1080p 60fps. If I were a game developer I would just quit lol.
Thats true. Because with the name of Final Fantasy comes expectation of quality and certain standarts which this game does not achieve. So it could be okish/mediocre rpg game but for sure its shitty when its labeled as final fantasy.
I absolutely love this game. Even tho it is absurdly linear, the presentation is pristine. These are some of the best character models I've seen in the Final Fantasy franchise.
Personally I didn't care about this game much. People are quick to attack you on RUclips for not liking a certain game; everybody has different tastes. I absolutely loved FF12, and everybody else seems to hate it. I just felt like FF13 gave you barely any freedom, and the battle system felt so stiff. I wanted to roam around the area only to find invisable walls holding me back. "You must go that way" is not my type of RPG.
Mortal Kombat Reconciliation I was a huge fan of 12 as well. I remember not caring for 13 as much, but I've been wanting to pick it back up as of late. I'm finally starting to become a big fan of the series, whereas before I only dabbled into a couple bits of certain games.
Just watching this review because I recently picked XIII up again for a second chance. I actually got hooked this time, letting go of my disdain for the linearity. Just want to let you know that after IV, XII is my second favorite FF, hands down.

The graphics and music hold up remarkably well in 2023. This game looks better than some games coming out even today. And it runs so well, nobody gives it credit for never having performance issues whatsoever, or at least nothing notable or noticeable. The one thing that hasn’t aged well is still the “worst” thing about the game. The linearity. If you’re not into it it’s a long race to gran pulse.
Those who claim square have been losing their edge really haven't been paying close enough attention to the past ff games. FF2, FF3, FF8, FFX-2, and FF12 could all be considered highly controversial FF releases. The FF series is a JRPG series built upon experimentation. If you don't like the inconsistency of gameplay mechanics among the different ff games then maybe you shouldn't be calling yourself an ff fan, I would suggest playing Dragon Quest or SMT games instead since those franchises (especially Dragon Quest), are a lot more consistent in their mechanics.
Reasons I play final fantasy by rank: 1. Story 2. Character 3. Music 4. Graphics 5. Gameplay Its about the only game series where I have not really cared what the gameplay was, as long as it could keep me hooked on the story.
Arrow Sith Lord Damn, really? I always found FF's gameplay to be very tight, well-balanced and tense. And going out of your way to get hidden things is both rewarding and helpful. The fact that there is always only ONE difficulty to choose shows that it's a game crafted with care. I respect your tastes though.
DKPaladinX It's what the developers decide a final fantasy is suppose to be, every game is different to each other usually keeping them fresh every release. tons of epic moments within the storyline and characters you learn to understand throughout the game like all of them have been but 13 is a slow start up until gran pulse. so tell me what a final fantasy game is "suppose" to be, you don't make them do you? no? well then the developer decides so you can't say what each game is suppose to be like.
You are right, partially at least. The developers are the ones that decide what to include, or not, in their products ... but it is also truth that we as consumers should know very well what to expect from a product with certain history and tradition. And to me, FF XIII (and all of its disgraceful sequels) are not worthy of the "Final Fantasy" name. What you are telling me is like saying that you are willing to pay the same price for a bycicle than for a car, when a company that has a tradition of making excellent, or at least decent, cars decides it wants to "innovate". I suggest to you to check out the review of "The Spoony Experiment" on this particular product, you can find it here on YT. PS: sorry for my english, it is not my native language :D
DKPaladinX Hey, another fan of the experiment! Funny thing is, once upon a time I was actually thinking about trying out FFXIII; Spoony showed me how unwise that would have been. PS: Don't worry about your English, it's fine. Way better than other comments I've seen.
DKPaladinX Like many will say this game will get a lot of harping for its linearity and all. However the mythology, character creations/emotions, landscapes, and story are all phenomenal and lives up to the Final Fantasy genre and name. The core idea of FF is that this world, our world's fate is within our own hands. The game is revolutionizing and changes the style of FF and I actually liked the difference from turn-based in a FF game for once. It did it better then I thought it would. The sequels however I agree aren't as good and don't live up to being a final fantasy game as did X-2 didn't do as well either, but the original game was fantastic.
XellDincht Well isnt that pretty much what you do in every Final Fantasy? Go thru predetermined areas killing monsters an enemies in an effort to push the story forward?
this was the first final fantasy game i ever played and i really enjoyed what i played i didnt make it past disc 2 cuz my brother traded it in *cries* and it made me really sad when everyone was bashing the game when i really liked it. but i dont care anymore i love this game and i cant wait to buy it again and complete it this time. I guess i cant judge it too much since i have nothing to compare it to
I feel exactly the same, it pains me when everyone gives this game so much hate, but if it was so bad why did it get 2 sequels??? HUH Sure the story was really confusing at first but everything else about it was driven, memorizing and full of fast paced action :)
***** God know how much there marketing budget was. Must have been over a 100 million or more. You should have seen the amount of advertising it was done in Japan. -_-
It was my first Final Fantasy too and will always be my favorite. Everyone is bashing it because it has a bad story. It is the best fucking story ever.
I think I loved this game so much because of the fact that I started it after finishing final fantasy 1 without a guide, so the linearity didn't bother me and I could focused more on the story and the gameplay, which I like it.
Rain I was curious about this for years becuase people would say X was as linear as XIII. Recently I got to play X and I have to say X hides its linearity. Between Blitzball , towns, shops, fully connected world, and later an airship it really tried to combat its linearity. The unfortunate thing is that FFXIII is not an improvement over X in linearity, it's a step back. I think that's another reason why it has a bad reputation.
@@Astraldymensions not to mention all the side quests and activities. No way in hell can you compare 13 to 10. Tidus, Waka, riku, Yuna all well written amazing characters people still remember to this day. Combat was amazing, sphere grid, everything was perfect.
in retrospect, this game was pretty good. doesn't seem so when you play it through the first time, but just think back on it and you may be surprised. i wish i could go back to other places besides places on Gran Pulse.
We dint hated we got disappointed with it. This final fantasy was extremely linear in comparison to its counter parts from the previous ones before this one came out. So, yeah you like the game thats fine. But Christ if you dont understand something then do a research on why it wasn't as popular as the others.
ff13 is my first and favorite ff game, but as with any radical change it created a rift between generations. its become so popular to hate, that some people think it entirely reasonable to despise it without ever even trying it. ff is evolving and if that means it has to abandon one generation to cater to the next. then so be it.
At the moment I'm liking FF13 (first time playing), honestly I would recommend FF9 to you guys. The characters are really like able and I really liked the story.
I think for FF7 it was the Nostalgia everyone experienced back in the day. You gotta keep in mind that a lot of peoples favorite FF's are the first ones they play. Like FF X was the first one I played and it's also one of my favorites, but so far I think Nine is my favorite!
i feel bad for anyone who thinks this game is the best in the series. And the "radical" change square enix created ruined the series and lost thousands of fans including myself. Play the truly great ones, 7,8,10, even 12 wasn't terrible... this one completely sucked balls....
khalique fields yes, i've played all of the above ones i mentioned and this is by far the worst...they stray so far from the core of what made the series great that they turned it to utter crap
Such a great game... I mean, the whole concept and the creation of such complicated worlds was fantastic. Also the characters and their emotions were really real. I like the fact each Final Fantasy game is unique, and the system in XIII is simply another great one
Tomcat407 compared to other games put out, it's above average. Compared to other games in the series. Not even close. That's what was so disappointing.
Peekoization They're wrong about the cast only sazh, lightning, fang and hope after he mans up was likable or bearable. Also the game should lose points for massive linearity. I'd give 13 a 7.8
FFXV's 10-year development is a point against it, not a point in its favor with regards to expectations. It has a LOT to answer for. That being said, I do believe it deserves a higher score than 13, though not necessarily higher than an 8.9. 13 simply should've been scored lower lol
Peekoization everything aside from linearity that people complained about was greatly expounded in this game. The characters were shit all developed and all boring unless you watched out of game media, and the story was disgustingly bad. Dungeons were a cool idea from previous entries that were just shoehorned in as side quests and were extremely bland as well. And the open world that was an answer to everyone's hate of XIII's linearity left the world so boringly barren of important stuff. Don't even get me started on those terrible runs of fetch... I mean 'side' quests. So yes, for how long we were teased this game and the hype around it, this game was the disappointment of a gamers lifetime.
I don't understand the level of hatred xiii gets... it is not a bad game... I was entertained through it all... would I have changed a few things about it? Hell yeah but I still enjoyed the game for what it was. Each to their own I guess. I m looking forward to lightning returns and xv.
People who are obsessed with FF7 will usually hate FF8-15. People who are obsessed with FF1 will hate FF2-15. Strange, isn't? I don't take Final Fantasy too seriously, so, it's easier for me to almost like them all. I thought 13 was a good game. The story was really good and it provided me with 80 hours of gameplay, just for the main story alone.
Frank Derms I am one of those guys that almost likes them all for what they are. I look forward to them and when they come I sink my teeth in and enjoy. Each game is an experience.
final fantasy 13 wasn't the best game but it definitley wasn't the worst it was something new Square Enix wanted to try out and for the most part it worked the only problem was, was that people were so use to the old place style of the other games each having one specific role and controlling all the members in the attacking party. this was something brand new that scared them cause it was different and they didn't know what to do they were confused about the paradigm system leveling up was different and the battle mechanics were definitely different. but like i said it was something new Square Enix wanted to try, some loved it while others hated it but what they have to realize is that this is what the future battle system FF will probably be like especially for FF 15, they probably won't have the paradigm system but the battle mechanics will most likely be the same with controlling only the party leader. in my opinion ign did give a proper review for this because i enjoyed it alot and have played it over 3 times. you guys just got to realize that this is the future of FF and that you just got to deal with it, its all up to the developers on whether they want to take it back to its origins or make something new. also before anyone says im not a real FF fan i've played 4, am playing 7, played dissidia, played 1, and have watched spirits within, and advent children. and played both FF 13 games 2nd one wasn't that good.
Ak47 yes the first 20 HOURS is tedious, only near the end is the 'good' stuff but even the good stuff isn't good enough, the game has one side mission, monster hunting. But at least the art design is good enough to help you through the boredom.
Ak47 The thing is there isn't much of a gameplay, the combat mechanics only becomes innovative near the end, the first 20 hours is literally tutorial, but if you really want to play it, then make sure you read a lot of guide.
***** Agreed! I'm probably the only person who enjoyed ffx-2, but maybe that's because I considered that game to be an extra side mission rather than an actual sequel, so maybe I wasn't disappointed because my expectations weren't so high to begin with. FFX was the last flagship title that still captured he things that made the series great. FF12 was kind of fun but it lacked a lot of final fantasy elements.
Matthew Etter What kind of question is that? Sure FFX does has its linear moments too but it gives more freedom with backtracking and extra pathways with plenty of great story to draw away from that.
Mental Morzan Hate to break it to you chap but every Final Fantasy is predominantly linear, games don't open up until you get the airship. The one exception being the World of Ruin which allows for nonlinear exploration.
Matthew Etter Of course they are. They have to be for stories, but there's a difference between being linear and being force to pretty much run a straight line. Hell, you can't Even power level in ff13. There's almost no freedom.
I feel sorry for people who have only ever played this as their first final fantasy game. They don't know how badly the series has been screwed up. Try playing Final Fantasy 6, the old SNES game, and you'll get a pretty good idea of how far the series has fallen from grace. Don't be fooled by the dated graphics either.
Playing III, X, XII and now XIII, I'm not really seeing what you're talking about. Square Enix just kept it from being boring to the current generation of gamers. They made it appeal to a larger audience that wants to get into RPGs rather than cater to those that want a clone of VI or VII. We get it, those games were awesome. But it's time to accept that maybe, just maybe, you're not keeping up with the times and the company is just evolving.
***** You said it so well. SOOO many annoying FF "fans" like this one are so god damn blinded by nostalgia that they fail to see that a game like Final Fantasy XIII is an incredible game *in its' own right*. Standalone from the games from the 90s that these fans loved, it is an amazing game. They just can't see past this, for some immature reason.
Escarabajo de oro I am sure that my decision - at least - is highly biased by experience with classics and their stories which make current ones repetitive, or cliches (just like playing the same damn thing with nice graphics)... battles were good though... I simply didn't like the story and characters... (would you really like a character like Snow... Vanille... or Hope... ?? they were just like tedious cartoons)
No problem. I sure hope you are using a 1080p screen with proper HDMI, the 1080p prerendered cutscenes in FF13 are some of the most gorgeous images in gaming. Later then, you can get back to me with any thoughts on the game.
I've been a FF fan since 7 came out and, personally, I LOVE XIII and pretty much everything about it, including how linear it is. Can it be frustrating? Yes, but I didn't find it to be that big of an issue. The complex battle system was refreshingly different as well and I really like it! I'm not saying S-E can do no wrong, (I personally hated XII), but they know what they're doing. Not to mention, Lightning is the best female character they've ever produced. Just my opinion, but I don't think XIII deserves all the hatred it seems to get. Play it before you judge it.
It's not complicated but it does require strategy later on. I mean it's usually the same strategy and the difficulty tends to come in the form of playing whack-a-mole with your paradigms for an extended period of time, but you can't just turn your brain off like people seem to think, especially if you are aiming for high rankings on each battle instead of just coasting through lazily and taking an hour per fight.
This was my very first Final Fantasy game and the linearity really wore me down after a while. I loved the characters (except Hope and Snow), I liked the setting, I liked the battle system, and the cutscenes were fantastic. Just wish it had been more open from the get go. I have something to admit though. I never got past Cid Raines.
This game was fantastic, and I was greatful with the linear style at the start before giving an open world to play in. There were no game play mechanics that I missed since it game me an extremely gradual introduction. Not only that, but 13-2 felt like a true sequel and did a great job to build on what happened in 13.
I personally liked this. My only real problem is the story . The characters are great but the game doesn't know who to focus on. You would think it's lighting since she's on the cover but towards the end,it isn't even about her. Good characters but not well executed. Gameplay is decent ,it became challenging for me at times but nothing to lose my hair over . I never picked auto battle though and their is option to turn that off I believe if you don't want it
it's about all the characters struggling with being a l'cie and their past. which is why it changes perspective a good bit. lightning seems a little more focused on because the relationship between her Serah and snow. at least that's what I think. there is definitely more to lightning being the main but I never looked that into it
IBlackSanta See, it starts off like that which i was happy for. Then we get more info on sazh and hope while it still focuses on lighting and snow. Towards the middle however, the game focuses on vanille and fang. I wouldn't mind this but then what is lighting, sazh, snow and hope doing now?(Besides saving the world) They feel more like background characters after there resolve is over. I'm all up for changing the perspective but dont ignore the other characters halfway through the game. I still like the story and the lines the characters give though, this is just the biggest problem for me
The best thing to do is read the novella from the game. Sadly the actual thing wasn't released in English, but there are English translations. It talks about the characters and what happened leading up to the 13th day before they were on the train to the Hanged Edge.
I have played many Final Fantasy games throughout the years and FF13 by far is my absolute favourite. The linear play didn't bother me much at all because the story and Visuals were Breathtaking to put it mildly. The characters were memorable, the Crystarum system was fun to work with and Paradigms were awesome to swap mid combat. The AI in game is on a totally game changing level and how you interact with your squad feels amazing. The only real downside to this game was that the Eidolons had no real place in it other than to advance the plot. In game, they were more trouble than their worth and they actually did more harm than good because they: 1. Did very weak damage to bosses/single targets 2. Reset the stagger gauge to 0 if you use gestault mode. Other than that, the game is amazing and is a worthy addition to the Final Fantasy franchise.
Well, the eidolons weren't completely useless. Depending on whether or not you took on all the side missions, Vanille's Eidolon is pretty much the only way to kill those big turtle mother fuckers in pulse. And since you need to farm those guys to get the material used for making the ultima weapons, I'd say they served their use
It doesnt matter if they are fans or not,no i rectify that in fact that helps to form a fair review about the game in question, you have to look at the origins of a franchise and see if its standard elements that are tied with its genre are being carried over, and compare with the developments that are being done with the newer games,in the case of FF13 everything is twisted, where is the story, where is the gameplay, the traditional elements like the exploration, free roam,OST,quests and sidestories?
IMO every final fantasy game of old was pretty linear until you get the airship. Same with XIII but instead of a airship you get bounty hunting missions which is okay. I liked final fantasy XIII and no I don't believe XIII is the worst FF game or its not a FF game at all. This game has very interesting lore and setting and its characters start off bad but you end up liking them. I still think XIII-2 and lighting returns are better games and this game got bashed on way too hard from so called "final fantasy fans"
Replaying on a MacBook Air 2017 and it’s runs amazingly! No heat issues at all. Second play through, and really enjoying it. After all the hype and criticism nearly 8 years later it’s safe to say it’s an amazing game!! A tad easy for the most part but there are some hard battles if you go looking. Menus are a joy to navigate having come from Skyrim!! FF xiii is worth a revisit 100%
This game sucked. It was painfully linear, boring, and the writing was terribly cheesy. The only reason i finished it was for achievements. I prefer western rpgs by a lot, but this is a new low for JRPGs to me. I swear the only ones i like are Pokemon and Dark Souls.
Final Fantasy XIII was a massive disappointment to the entire franchise, and it does not deserve the title 'final fantasy'. Hal of the people who bought this game in Japan returned it. It sucked so bad you can get it nearly for free.
I know I'll get hate for this but... I played this Final Fantasy 13 and I thought it was Miles better than 6, 7 and especially 8. Not my favorite though (that would be 10).
How does this compare to other FF games as far as gameplay and linearity? Apparently it's being released on PC in like 2 weeks, and I am quite interested.
The best part of this game is its dynamic and fast paced battle system It is so addictive . this game is also similar to FPS like call of duty or halo in terms of linerity. most of FPS games are as linear as this one, yet they do not complain about the lineraty.
Funny you would mention that. Final Fantasy 6 is by far my favorite Final Fantasy of them all. If you think that no characters in that game had spikey hair I would highly recommend replaying. The monk is a good example, and I am sure most of the characters would look similar to the rest in the Final Fantasy series were it not for graphical limitations. The female lead in Final Fantasy 6 shows deep levels of emotion in the game. Thats what made the game so damn good.
Having been a long time FF fan I have recently been playing through the entire series again and finally thought "meh" i may as well try ff13 after all these years. I always kinda knew this game wasn't that great but man is it's story bad! Gameplay is okay and graphics are great but you play Final Fantasy's for the story and man is it lacking. Does not deserve a 8.9.
It may not be up to the same standard as the original playstation era Final fantasies but I thought the plot for final fantasy XIII was excellent because if nothing else it was different from the standard fair and did a good job of doing a social commentary on society in relationion to religion.; plus XIII has the best character developmet of any of the finalfantasy games, all the party members are memorable in their own right. Final fantasy Crystal chronicles: Crystal bearers is worse by quite a bit and the direct sequels to X and XIII are naff compared to their predecessors.
Soul King I said that the presentation was bad, not the story itself. The plot is fine, but its presentation is terrible as nothing is sufficiently explained.
FFXIII was the first FF game I played since VII. Considering I was a kid when the first game came out, the game is superior in every way. If you actually take the time to read the data log and don't take the usual advice of "you don't have to grind until Chapter 11", you can really get to know the battle system, and you don't have to wait until post game to upgrade everything (except the Crystarium, which is not completely unlocked until after the final boss). I actually don't mind the grinding, and there are plenty of areas the game gives you to effectively farm for components or items that can be sold for Gil. I started upgrading my weapons and accessories as soon as I was able to, and found the game much more enjoyable. Since the first Final Fantasy, grinding is a standard of the series. With 8 weapons available to each character, I like how you can really customize roles for each party member. I found a second play through much more enjoyable.
I remember buying this game at launch and was mesmerised by the opening cinematic and the graphical presentation. The moment the first battle began I just sat there with my mouth open like wuuuuuuut. :(((
Things to always expect in a Final Fantasy review: •"It will displease some of the fans, but" •"It's not the best but..." •"There are some errors here and there, but..." •"Verdict: 8 (Forget all the cons they mention).
I hate how much people hate on this game. It is a very nice game with a great combat system and beautiful scenery. I get it: It's too linear. It's a great game, just not a really good Final Fantasy game. Keep an open mind.
Si Filey First of all this is barely readable English, second I'm pretty convinced you don't know the definition of 'psychology' and third The Promise is one of the most beautiful songs ever and the use of the A minor leitmotif was brilliant.
I’m here in 2021. If you see this IM ABOUT TO SAY A FACT NOT MY OPINION. the music in this game is top 3 in the series and it’s taking home a silver medal.
if this didn't have the FF name, it would of been forgotten long ago, and probably rated a lot lower. I honestly don't think the game deserves the incredible hate it gets, but it is def the weakest of the FF series
That's always up to the player but if you're going for general opinion seven is most commonly praised as the best one. It's hard to recommend a specific one because I don't know your taste in games but six through ten are my preferred titles.
Let's be honest. These graphics for 2009 were absolutely amazing
The cutscenes are mostly cgi
@@cluclap But! The game still had pretty solid graphics
@@TheGamerGuy1981 no it hasn’t 15 was fire the new 7 remake was too.
@@TheGamerGuy1981 the sphere grid in FFX , aaarrgggggggghhhh, it pisses me off, they're literally making us grind
I really like this game. The graphics, the music, the dynamic characters, the fun battle system. I’ve put in 70 hrs and I’m still not done, once the game opened up the completionist in me wanted to see it all. The only thing is the combat becomes just a little tired towards the end. It’s still fun, I just wish there was something else to do besides run from one fight to another
The downfall for ffxiii because it's too linear.
I feel like the only final fantasy fan boy who really enjoyed this game.
Caleb Navarro You're not the only one.
Evans O Exactly. You're just another blind fanboy.
FPietros I'm not a blind fanboy.
Evans O You're just another blind Squeanix fanboy.
***** He can't start anything other than bubbling nonsense about the crap that is FFXIII.
Don't get why FF13 was so hated yeah it was linear but FF10 was as well but people loved the hell out of that game.
+A_Lamia_ With_Aids
Tell one singel thing thats better in FF13 than in FFX, beside the Grafik.
Ff 10 had wayy better characters, sure tidus may be annoying but you cant tell me the rest of the cast are bad
Personally this is one of my favourite ff's after 7 & 10, dont see why it gets so much hate
+Richard Watson Serously not? Maybe becose the story suckd, or at least comes nowhere close to 7 and 10... maybe becose it let's you no freedom at all (can only level up to a certain point, can't switch party members, can't go back, the game even desides for you which attack it does...)
Even if you don't agree with them, you can't tell me you don't see why.
Data logs are your friend and they're there to help explain one of the more complex universes square has developed.
type 0 is great on PSP probably better than 13 real talk type 0 had world map above ps2 graphics great story and all
+Franz KEN yeah, I enjoyed the diverse cast a lot. seven best girl ;)
+Franz KEN And Type-0 is also a bit linear and staged.
70 hours and your done? Wtf! 70 hours was my grinding alone dude how did you do it.
I presume if you never experienced the previous ones... getting "impressed" may not be as hard as for those who could almost predict what cliches and empty dialogues would come from each char highly detailed-animated mouth....
+Kio Genesis you're*
Absolutely love this game. The gameplay, graphics and MUSIC!
Ahhh, have to go replay it, brb.
Same
People in 2010: This game is linear so it's bad. Open world games are the future.
13 years and a million open world games later: You know what? Maybe we overreacted.
nah this is still one of the worst finak Fantasy games
hell nah, this is linear done wrong
The music is the best out of the whole franchise. Vocal/Instrumental. Whole game feels like a celebration of mankind.
Just finished this game, it looks gorgeous on a 4K screen, even ressembles a PS4 title at some sections
FF13 is my favourite because I just loved the whole game, the gameplay, the story especially, the characters and the scenery! It had the whole package, and I personally just loved it.
+Aguila701 Shut up FFVII Fan boy, this game is amazing
+Aguila701 why were you watching a review about a 5 year old game which you knew you didnt like?
Franz KEN lmao you cant even compare those two? The gameplay differences are like day and night,
It's my opinion, don't have to agree with it! :)
+W Jones Is there gameplay?
Finally someone who understands the real thing! Was getting tired of reading unknowledged haters comments in here...
***** I heard from one website that Final Fantasy XIII failed to meet sales expectations. Can't remember which.
CHiLLtheBEAST Grinding in Final Fantasy XIII is a pain. I had to use a complete save editor for my PS3 version to speed things up.
judging by the comment section, people cant take anyone else's opinion...
Welcome to the internet
A truly wonderful game to play if you ask me.
Yep
Thats mean you never play any final fantasy series before
+Hasan Wawan Final Fantasy 13 is fun....if you mainly just care about the story.
Actually it's true I only played FF XIII
I didn't like this game much when it first came out. Returned to it when it came out for PC and really digged into the combat system. There is so much more depth there than you'd expect at first and it actually became one of my favorite Final Fantasy games in the series!
Don't really understand why people say FFXIII-2 is such a big improvement as that was actually the most frustrating FF I've ever finished.
Why all the hate? I love this game!
Me too
So do I!!!!!!
This is one of the most fair reviews for this overhated game.
Ironic, considering it’s coming from IGN of all places.

Christian Stachl I definaly agree with you. :-)
I agree with you XD
@@REVy_X sad thing is it still applies today. Jrpg fans are really their own creature
I think if this game was released with any other name, there wouldn't be so much hate on it.
Respectable opinion. I actually quite liked ff12 as well! I loved FF13 and I'm now playing it all over again. Definately in my top 10 games for me :D
Mortal Kombat Reconciliation I was a huge fan of 12 as well. I remember not caring for 13 as much, but I've been wanting to pick it back up as of late. I'm finally starting to become a big fan of the series, whereas before I only dabbled into a couple bits of certain games.
Same as me! I recommend you picking it up again. It takes a bit of time to get into it :)
Just watching this review because I recently picked XIII up again for a second chance. I actually got hooked this time, letting go of my disdain for the linearity. Just want to let you know that after IV, XII is my second favorite FF, hands down.

Can't believe this game is 10 years old.
who came here because of FF7 REMAKE?
i went back to 13 because 7r didn't do it for me and 7r felt worse then 13 to me :o
@@jadecrystal2486 what are you on?
I also recommend those who aren't accustomed to the differing gameplay mechanics to play the Fire Emblem, Star Ocean, and Tales franchises.
Reasons I play final fantasy by rank:
1. Story
2. Character
3. Music
4. Graphics
5. Gameplay
Its about the only game series where I have not really cared what the gameplay was, as long as it could keep me hooked on the story.
Arrow Sith Lord Same order for me pretty much.
Buttered Funnybiscuit I never said I didn't like the gameplay, though. I rather enjoyed it. It just never mattered to me, though, as a selling point.
Graphics above gameplay? come on m8
Arrow Sith Lord Hmmmmmmmmmm.......... then i guess you`d like yahtzee`s review of it. type zero punctuation ff 13 and fall on love.
this game was fucking awesome, the only thing i would change would be how linear it is. other than that it's a top final fantasy game.
You obviously have no idea what a Final Fantasy game is supposed to be.
For anyone who hasn't played FF13 or those of u who quit playing it, make it to chapter 11.....Just do that and you wont be dissapointed

HUH
Sure the story was really confusing at first but everything else about it was driven, memorizing and full of fast paced action :)
Boast about Games What I see right now is two people with crazy bad grammar talking about a really bad game.
***** I'm playing FF8 on my PS3 and love it way more than the XIII trilogy.

yup started today on my xbox one x :)
Heck yea! Just started replaying it on my beloved 360 :-)
Frick yeah
Started playing on steam, love it!
I think I loved this game so much because of the fact that I started it after finishing final fantasy 1 without a guide, so the linearity didn't bother me and I could focused more on the story and the gameplay, which I like it.
FFX is just as linear and ya'll love it so god damn much. For real man..
*****
yes is is. play it again
***** FFX has no back tracking either, and you leave the towns eventually and cant go back until the end of the game.
8.9/10 is a great score though..?
@@Astraldymensions not to mention all the side quests and activities. No way in hell can you compare 13 to 10. Tidus, Waka, riku, Yuna all well written amazing characters people still remember to this day. Combat was amazing, sphere grid, everything was perfect.
in retrospect, this game was pretty good. doesn't seem so when you play it through the first time, but just think back on it and you may be surprised. i wish i could go back to other places besides places on Gran Pulse.
I don’t understand how you can hate this game just watching this made me fall in love and miss playing it ❤️
We dint hated we got disappointed with it. This final fantasy was extremely linear in comparison to its counter parts from the previous ones before this one came out. So, yeah you like the game thats fine. But Christ if you dont understand something then do a research on why it wasn't as popular as the others.
This game was awesome. All I wish is if there were a way to replay the story with all of the skills unlocked after finishing the main story.
Who is here after Final fantasy 15 and in 2019
ff13 is my first and favorite ff game, but as with any radical change it created a rift between generations. its become so popular to hate, that some people think it entirely reasonable to despise it without ever even trying it. ff is evolving and if that means it has to abandon one generation to cater to the next. then so be it.
Josh Hines opinions eh?
khalique fields yes, i've played all of the above ones i mentioned and this is by far the worst...they stray so far from the core of what made the series great that they turned it to utter crap
It's been 10 years and it's surprising that of all the review channels IGN has the fairest review of FF13
Such a great game... I mean, the whole concept and the creation of such complicated worlds was fantastic. Also the characters and their emotions were really real. I like the fact each Final Fantasy game is unique, and the system in XIII is simply another great one
It is still one of my fav FF games. Replaying it now
this is my favorite final fantasy game and Vanille is a great character!
*Final Fantasy 13 Ratings*
games radar *100*
game informer *93*
ign *89*
gamespot *85*
I think I made my point...
Tomcat407 Mid-80s rating is fair; it's a good game overall with flaws.
What was your point?
Tomcat407 compared to other games put out, it's above average. Compared to other games in the series. Not even close. That's what was so disappointing.
ElderCid well put. FF13 was not a bad game, but it's just not as good as many of it's predecessors.
MrZapparin Different people have different tastes. This is number 5 on my fav FF games list
For once, i agree with an IGN review. This game gets half love/hate from the whole FF fan base
Pandemic boredom inspired me to finally tackle this game. For a 12 year old game it looks phenomenal. Looking forward to the journey.
When I learned about the stagger system, I became addicted to this game.
Did this REALLY get a better score than FFXV??
Peekoization yep
Peekoization They're wrong about the cast only sazh, lightning, fang and hope after he mans up was likable or bearable. Also the game should lose points for massive linearity. I'd give 13 a 7.8
FFXV's 10-year development is a point against it, not a point in its favor with regards to expectations. It has a LOT to answer for.
That being said, I do believe it deserves a higher score than 13, though not necessarily higher than an 8.9. 13 simply should've been scored lower lol
ThrillingDuck I don't think 13 should've been scored lowered, I think it's a great game. This is MY OPINION though.
Feel like most of the hate is because people expected something much different. But as I knew what the game was going in i reasly dig it so far
final fantasy 13 wasn't the best game but it definitley wasn't the worst it was something new Square Enix wanted to try out and for the most part it worked the only problem was, was that people were so use to the old place style of the other games each having one specific role and controlling all the members in the attacking party. this was something brand new that scared them cause it was different and they didn't know what to do they were confused about the paradigm system leveling up was different and the battle mechanics were definitely different. but like i said it was something new Square Enix wanted to try, some loved it while others hated it but what they have to realize is that this is what the future battle system FF will probably be like especially for FF 15, they probably won't have the paradigm system but the battle mechanics will most likely be the same with controlling only the party leader. in my opinion ign did give a proper review for this because i enjoyed it alot and have played it over 3 times. you guys just got to realize that this is the future of FF and that you just got to deal with it, its all up to the developers on whether they want to take it back to its origins or make something new.
also before anyone says im not a real FF fan i've played 4, am playing 7, played dissidia, played 1, and have watched spirits within, and advent children. and played both FF 13 games 2nd one wasn't that good.
It's good enough for a 1 time playthrough, but the game has no replay value.
Ak47
yes the first 20 HOURS is tedious, only near the end is the 'good' stuff but even the good stuff isn't good enough, the game has one side mission, monster hunting. But at least the art design is good enough to help you through the boredom.
Ak47
The thing is there isn't much of a gameplay, the combat mechanics only becomes innovative near the end, the first 20 hours is literally tutorial, but if you really want to play it, then make sure you read a lot of guide.
*****
Agreed!
Alexandru Neagu I loved X-2 and XII too
DON'T DO IT IS IT TOO LATE YOU DONT HAVE TO SUFFER WHAT I WENT THOUGH
Want to run down a hallway? Then this game is for you!
Are you talking about this or X?
Mental Morzan I'm not defending the streamlined nature of this game because it is handled poorly.
Also VIII is way worse.
The most underrated game ever
+LUC Eldridge The most garbage FF game ever, followed by FFX
+Hasan Wawan Rub two brain cells together man.
I'm playing it now I love it so far :)
+Jesse Klausman come back after you play the vii,ix and vi i want to see who's brain need to get rub
+Hasan Wawan I already played through them.
I actually enjoyed all 3 games. I just ordered the trilogy yesterday from Amazon. Looking forward to see how they look on my One X.
Shut up.
***** yea have you played ff all the bravest? That's this company's evolution for ya.
Square Enix is dead to me since ff ATB
One of the worst jrpgs I have ever played.
+F0rAFewDollarsMore 7 and 9 take the cake though.
damn right... :-(
Escarabajo de oro I am sure that my decision - at least - is highly biased by experience with classics and their stories which make current ones repetitive, or cliches (just like playing the same damn thing with nice graphics)... battles were good though... I simply didn't like the story and characters... (would you really like a character like Snow... Vanille... or Hope... ?? they were just like tedious cartoons)
Crazy how this looks better than most of the games running on a Nintendo Switch.
Gta4 2008 is older. And still looks amazing.
Miss Ryan and Colin at IGN. This was such a fun time at IGN. BEYOND!!!
This review summed it up perfectly; it's not the best of FF series, but it's still a superb title.
Thumbs up if you are here because this was announced on Steam xD
Can't wait to get it on Steam.
Someone's going to be disappointed.
@@larrylambo3279 Not anymore lmao
I laughed so hard when he said the battle system was complicated and the characters were likable.
Press X to win. Or left bumper occasionally.
Mitchell Boeck ....but he is right, in my opinion.
I never picked auto battle though and their is option to turn that off I believe if you don't want it
*there*
sorry,auto correct on phone
it's about all the characters struggling with being a l'cie and their past. which is why it changes perspective a good bit. lightning seems a little more focused on because the relationship between her Serah and snow. at least that's what I think. there is definitely more to lightning being the main but I never looked that into it
IBlackSanta
See, it starts off like that which i was happy for.
In game, they were more trouble than their worth and they actually did more harm than good because they:
1. Did very weak damage to bosses/single targets
Caleb Navarro quite true man, quite true
Duane Mar i played this game way too much, wanted that platinum trophy
played all the ff series from the first to this.:
From best to ok:
1. FF7
2. FF10
3. FF9
4. FF8
5. FF13
Idk man, FF6 was amazing! And FF12 had the best combat IMO, though weak characters compared to other FF games. Still haven't played FF7 lol
+Kuro Senpai Agree with ur list , should play 12 too though I think its above 10 but under 7
+Kuro Senpai My exact thoughts.
+Kuro Senpai Anyone who's played the FF series completely usually puts FF 6 to the top or the 2nd place so allow me to doubt it. xD
VI? IV? Cecil and Locke are two of my favourite characters, don't forget them!
Lightning returns was mt first FF game
it ruined my gaming life ever since.
ok
Hey try final fantasy 7 n 8 and the remake of 2 i think for psp you'll love it
Just got FFXV,amazing game imo. Ill just remember FFXIII as a huge mistake :)
That game looks great but I'll pass saw the ending and it makes no sense going through all that just to end....... but do enjoy
The Arekkusu Glad you picked XV up! Thinking about trying the other FFs?
this game is way too linear, I like that FF15 actually went back to the open world design :)
My favourite final fantasy. SOLID battile system. The only problem is the lack of exploration
***** Funny how the first FF game you play is your favorite huh?
Personally, first and favorite FF is 10. I'm really excited for 15, but I'm kind of worried that I won't like it as much, due to that first FF thing.
sd19delta 10's my favorite in the main series, but 13's my second.
***** Haven't played it but form what I've heard it's summed up with good gameplay, stupid story.
You won't get hate from me even though 10 isn't my favorite
How does this compare to other FF games as far as gameplay and linearity? Apparently it's being released on PC in like 2 weeks, and I am quite interested.
The FF XIII trilogy are my favorites in the series. Followed by X/X2!
The RPGeek yes!
this game sucks
the main cast is awful, the story is a convoluted mess and its linear.
seriously what a waste of 10 bucks.
The place looked so wide until i played the game ;-; CORRIDORS FOREVER
Such horrible story presentation in this game.
The game was awesome! You have no taste in story then
Soul King I said that the presentation was bad, not the story itself. The plot is fine, but its presentation is terrible as nothing is sufficiently explained.
chimanruler15 I liked the presentation. If you think it's bad, then that's your opinion
Soul King What I mean is that nothing is sufficiently explained in the plot, unless you read the data logs or go online for answers.
chimanruler15 They did explain it. That's why you have to play the REST OF THE GAME!
I liked this game and the sequels.
I remember buying this game at launch and was mesmerised by the opening cinematic and the graphical presentation. The moment the first battle began I just sat there with my mouth open like wuuuuuuut. :(((
Things to always expect in a Final Fantasy review:
•"It will displease some of the fans, but"
•"It's not the best but..."
•"There are some errors here and there, but..."
•"Verdict: 8 (Forget all the cons they mention).
This isn't a review - it's a promotion. Zero Punctuation does an ACTUAL review.
There is a pretentious gamer flooding the comments. Can you spot him?
Kame Senin?
There's actually two. Kame Senin and Evans O.
Meh, it was Okay. Not as bad as some make it out to be, not as good as fans say it is.
i wish they did FF12 with Vaan, Balthier and Ba'gangnam style.
They are, they're releasing a HD version of it and FFX -2 in September!
I hate how much people hate on this game. It is a very nice game with a great combat system and beautiful scenery. I get it: It's too linear. It's a great game, just not a really good Final Fantasy game. Keep an open mind.
***** Just keep living life with that closed mind of your's...
the older ff games were also linear. you go to a town dungeon boss town dungeon boss town dungeon boss etc
Game is awesome. I didn't even know there was a Final Fantasy 14.
There's a 15 as well you know lol
Yeah...
The game isn't as bad as some say, but seriously, those calling it "wonderful" have obviously never played the REAL FF games....
Better than VIII, anyone who likes that game I value less as a human being.
Matthew Etter I agree lol
Matthew Etter you think 13 is better than 8?
***** By a good margin, if you actually like VIII there is something very wrong with you.
I hope Lightning is in Kingdom Hearts III.
if this didn't have the FF name, it would of been forgotten long ago, and probably rated a lot lower. I honestly don't think the game deserves the incredible hate it gets, but it is def the weakest of the FF series
graphics look damn good. very surprising
That's always up to the player but if you're going for general opinion seven is most commonly praised as the best one. It's hard to recommend a specific one because I don't know your taste in games but six through ten are my preferred titles.
