      Sick, we'll have to do it! We have suspicions that it's over 1000 years old. One of Reece's friends said they counted 2000 rings on one tree up there when then cut that block. I'm definitely interested enough to haul a saw up there!

    • @Subalpinism
      @Subalpinism  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks! I actually considered that. I decided against it so that only very motivated/navigationably competent individuals will feel compelled to seek out the zone. If one wanted, they could find it. It's a bit off the beaten path and I don't want anyone getting lost out there with my GPX file haha

    • @M-R-travel

      I was thinking more of a general route on a map and stats about time spent climbing and vert skied. I am not going to make it to your area but interested in what others ski to inform evaluation of potential routes.

    Man just found your channel today. Fantastic stuff, didn’t realize how much I missed these more adventure style blogs. Great work!
    I would love to hear your thoughts on Avi risk, I don’t ski any back country myself, I’m out of Denver, but I’m sure you have a ton of local knowledge of your mountains and snow conditions.
    What were the conditions that gave you the confidence to rip this? Love hearing people’s thoughts on it and I think that would be a cool section to add in to your videos!

      Thanks for the feedback, stoked to have you along!! I definitely want to try to include more of that.
      Varley is a pretty chill zone and goes quite often, it's not super steep and only the top has any actual avy terrain exposure.
      We check the weather multiple times a day on different sites and really keep a finger on the pulse of the snowpack all winter. We knew that this snow had fallen cold and then had a while to settle, a rain crust and then about 10cm more on top. The crust provided bridging over the big wind slabs from the northern storm.

    Pro tip: The G3 via carbon poles are adjustable 😂
    Why are you grabbing them below the foam grip?

    • @Subalpinism
      @Subalpinism  9 месяцев назад

      🤣 I know bro I just like the way they feel like that haha. The weight of the handle above my hand counter balances them, which is good because I pit like a pound of duct tape on the end of one of them. My next set of poles is definitely going to be a non-adjustable set that just has a long grip. Seen peoples get frozen short before and I can't be bothered changing them all the time haha

    How are the Dracos? How are the Fr 15's? You should do a mid season gear review/opinions/impressions on the new setups. Im a Niko follower as well and waiting to place my order

    • @Subalpinism
      @Subalpinism  9 месяцев назад +1

      They are awesome man, the bindings release really well. The skis are chargers. I do wish I mounted them 1cm infront of reco though, they are definitely less playful than the bents. I mean I guess that's to be expected with a charging ski. A mid season gear revisit is a great idea man, I may do that!

    • @ryancopp6437
      @ryancopp6437 9 месяцев назад

      @@Subalpinism i usually do the same. mounted my animas +3. do you want a more stable tail or more maneuverable ski in mounting the Draco more forward?

    Stoked for the next vid! How are you liking the dracos so far with the atk bindings?!

    • @Subalpinism
      @Subalpinism  9 месяцев назад

      Dude they are so sick. You'll see in the next video I crashed and popped out a few times and the release was perfect! I also did a resort day at Whistler on them and they handle super well. I have to lean a bit farther forward than with the bents but they handle super well. I do wish I got them mounted 1cm forward though to just make them extra playful... But that's just me.
      The second day up Varley was hilarious, I crashed a bunch and we almost lost our buddy in the woods lol.

    Maybe you could also cut down that big cypress tree (@8;00) to make your skinning even easier........ not cool cutting down trees and filling creeks with them.

    • @Subalpinism
      @Subalpinism  9 месяцев назад +4

      Hi Kirk, all the trees we cut down were young saplings on an established trail, growing out of gravel. No work was done off of the FSR. The branches were laid over man-made drainage ditches.
      If you didn't know, all of the hiking and skiing trails everyone knows and enjoys, including yourself, require maintenance like this. Trails don't just magically stay clear indefinitely, passionate people put many hours into maintaining them. Proper trail maintenance also prevents braiding of trails which is more detrimental to the local ecosystem.
      This is obviously very different from cutting down thousand year old trees in virgin old growth. I'm sure you understand this.
