I love the pre-dreadnoughts, I particularly like the Russian borodino class.

nice job. The torpedo nets are hung out on booms. Imagine the blast from those 12" guns firing cross-deck, and what a nightmare the magazine and shell room underneath the turret must have been to work in so close to the hull.

The Germans and the British did that with some of their earlier Battleships (HMS Neptune and SMS Kaiser for example). However when, like you said, they tried to fire the guns cross-deck, it caused extensive damage to the hull and the main deck. There was also the problem that if the structures installed over the guns got hit by enemy fire, they could fall over the turrets and block them. Not the best solution offcourse but they were learning at the time how to make these new warships. 😀

@@joaoonda The main problem designers had with the early Dreadnoughts were facilities within the dockyards, especially Devonport and Portsmouth, the Navy's two main repair dockyards. The slipways could handle ships 600ft long, and over (as shown by the Repulse and Renown, built later in the war at John Brown's and Fairfield respectively, at nearly 800') , but there were no docks of sufficient size, limiting the early battleships and battlecruiser to under 600ft. When Portsmouth began to build the new locks and dry-docks, designers began to work on new, bigger ships, so the all centre-line dreadnought was a possibility.
At Portsmouth, The Princess Royal, at 700 ft long, was the first ship to use C Lock in April 1913. In 1912 Portsmouth also received the new floating dock capable of lifting 40,000 tons to inspect and repair Dreadnoughts. (Later sent to Malta)
The longer docks allowed designers to build all centre line ships, the old problem of wing turrets interfering with anti-torpedo protection was dealt with, a full broadside could be achieved and ammunition could be transferred between turrets using the centreline passageways much easier in action.
To get some idea of the problems of limited dock space, you only need to look at the French dreadnought, Provence, with heavy armament on a small hull, with the forward turret so far forward she buried her forecastle in a seaway. a classic example of limited dry dock facilities for repair and maintenance.

@@bellerophonchallen8861 you're quite right! And another interesting piece of trivia: the americans had another limitation when building their ships besides their slipways lenght: excessive beam. As you might know, all american dreadnoughts mounted their guns on the centerline, mostly because of the size of the Panama Canal locks. If they were too wide, they couldnt cross from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Later they were upgraded in size, but even then the project Montana Class Battleships were again too wide for them. Its so rare to find someone so knowledgeable in these matters. Thanks for the info!
