I had a major stroke during brain surgery, and I lost my right side and most of my speech. What just drives me up a wall is ''Thank God, he saved you.'' I must live the rest of my life paralyzed and not being able to talk to anyone, gee thanks God.

@@HAsh-ut4st I'm doing OK, my stroke happened over 7years ago due to surgeon trying to do an angiogram to a AVM in my brain. The surgeon did the total opposite what we both agreed to. Everything that could go bad whet very bad, such as the surgeon who actually does the brain surgeries went home for the night while my brain was hemorrhaging resulting in 3 months in the hospital, 6 mouths in rehab. I've never been a people person or a religion person, so I had the strength to pulled though. I'm sorry you had a stroke to; nobody should have to go through that.

So God bless you by affecting you with a stroke and lots of speech and therefore downgraded your quality of life and your ability to communicate but you know what? You must thank him because you’re still alive even with a very much diminished quality of life at least he saved you. I know what utter bullshit it makes no sense at all. I’m so sorry that happened to you, but God had nothing to do with it as you know. And if he did what a vicious narcissistic psychopathic piece of shit he is for inflicting that on you. What’s even worse if he was responsible people are aiding and a betting him by praising him for still keeping you alive in a more degradative state. People are sick.

@@HAsh-ut4st So glad yours wasn't worse. Strokes run in my father's side of the family. And I've got at least one of the genes, so it's something I worry about at times. I hope I don't get one that is so debilitating, or that makes me lose my logic. I'd rather it just take me out at that point.

Once I saw a documentary about a Portuguese ophthalmologist who was allowed to work in North Korea for a few weeks. He cured an old man of cataract. And for the first time in his life this old man saw his 10 year old grandchild. He fell to his knees crying in front of the picture on the wall of that first, already deceased leader, Kim Il-sung. And thanked him profusely. It is precisely the backwardness of this leader and his son and grandson that this old man did not receive proper eye care in the first place.

I'm sorry to say that I've forgotten who it was who said it (on one of the atheist/human secularist YT channels), but it helped crystallized my thoughts on death. I'm not concerned, at all, with the lack of existence, or what happens after death. But I have considerable stake in having some measure of control for the "how" and "when". And I think that may be true of many people. It's the idea of 'dying' , and the accompanying pain and drawn out misery (which many people experience with their elders) that is what's really scary. Not what happens or doesn't happen afterward.

When you talked about the commandment about "taking the lord's name in vain", it reminded me of a question I've had for a long time about that.
Does it really refer to swearing? And how could we ever really know? What if it really means something else, like ascribing words or positions to god, then using the "name", the authority, of that god to lend weight to those words or positions, when really they are simply those of the speaker or writer? When people talk about god hating certain people, or condemning divorce, abortion, or what have you, are they "taking the lord's name in vain"?

Jamie Foxx and Denzel Washington have both pushed their god beliefs whenever they've been interviewed. Now, of the two actors, Denzel is my favorite. I especially like his take on "The Equalizer "film, which is his version of the original tv series from back in the 80s starring the late Edward Woodward. Denzel cranks up the character's intensity and the threat of seriously violent payback to the criminals. Woodward's version is more cerebral, and he hated using violence, and his version of that character was a former British Intelligence agent, like from M-I 6.

I have a comment for the mom with the autistic son. I’m autistic and so are two of my children. If he’s able to articulate those fears he’s completely able to process a response like Seth’s. This was a fear I grew up with, and being raised with the fear of hell did not help that. I have a 6 year old now with autism and she constantly ruminates over death and what’s going to happen after, and I didn’t raise her in religion. The autistic brain needs order and definition and answers, and anything that’s unknown is terribly frightening to us. But accepting that there are things that don’t have answers is a really important skill for us to learn. We won’t always know, and that will be really uncomfortable, but we can focus our energy on making the most of what we DO have right in front of us.

On Dawkins, calling himself a cultural Christian with soft spot for the aesthetics of the faith shouldn't be treated so critically. I know atheists who no longer follow their Hindu beliefs but call themselves cultural hindus, those who were once Muslims who are cluturally muslim. And I'm pretty sure this whole cultural Christian thing is not new; he basically said as much in the God Delusion. It felt pretty obvious to me that that's what he was saying.

I say: "Oh, that's easy. god waved his wand and POOF it happened"
them: "I thought you said, you didn't believe in God?"
Me: "Well, you book says he did, so..."
    Them: "But Atheis-"
Me: "No Atheist has ever said what you claim. Your book claims your god did, though. Go read it."
    Then I just walk away.

I didn't like the Jamie Foxx special at all. He was still Jamie Foxx. I didn't think that he was at all humble. Said that God gave him the stroke because of not going to church. Give me a break! It really helps that he is famous and has a lot of money. I'm sure he had the best of care. Thanking God totally pissed me off. He was humoring his audience.

My explanation for the difference in experienced time is, as kids we wait on stuff, mainly christmas and birthdays, the days you get presents for no reason. As you get older, you may still get presents, bu6t you don't anticipate it that much anymore.

Maybe Jamie was still high on the pain medications they gave him while he recovered. But this doesn't surprise me since it's someone that's a comedian/actor. Go listen to Jim Breur and his Q anon type rants. I think Jim is an awesome comedian, but when I heard him talk about the conspiracy theories he's into, I was like "WTF has he smoked?!". I know that's not what Jamie Foxx was spewing, but it's not far off.
