The intro to KOF 94 is special to me because it was used in Terry Bogard's Smash trailer. Terry's presence in Smash is what what got interested in learning about SNK and becoming an SNK fan. The fact that 1994 is my birth year is an extra bonus.
Ngl 94’s is my absolute favourite, the buildup, Kyo catching the envelope, Terry’s “ok!”, Ryo’s “Ora Ora!” The teams getting shown, Kyo’s full appearance being revealed PEAK 🔥
Im with you on this one. It's not my favorite, but it's up there among my top 5. Adding to the points you said, I like Kyo's "hYAA" during his reveal. His old voice sometimes sound funny to me and it always cracks me up ( I'm not trying to be rude to the VA)
Say whatever you want about KOF 2001, but the intro is awesome! The theme is actually a remix of the opening theme from the original Fatal Fury (1991) I like the scene where K' is seen wearing his new special red glove, the hero rising from the ashes Meanwhile, NESTS' latest bioweapon awakens (K9999), raising his hand showing his own special blue glove It's kind of a parallel between the hero and the antagonist Also there's that amazing scene where you see Kula, K' and K9999 Probably the reason why some fans see them as the 'Sacred Treasures' of the NESTS Saga And finally the logo, the logo of KOF 2001 is the best one of the NESTS Saga games If you look closely, you'll see that the colors of the logo are a reference to K9999 It is clear Eolith wanted K9999 to be the face of the game (and they succeeded!) Good work KOF 2001/Eolith 👍
I'll never forget the first time i saw the 2000 intro !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was by far the best, kof 2000 was so much trying to push things forward while saying it's goodbye to the fans. it's the last glims we have about "what could have been" with these games but, we have to do with what we have
I absolutely love the intro to KoF 99 Dream Match on Dreamcast - that's probably cheating a bit, but it was so great to see an anime fully animated intro...
Something I don't like about the XI, XIV, 2002 and 2002 UM intros is that they keep emphasizing the Kyo-Iori rivalry instead of highlighing the protagonists of the saga in question. K' and Kula should have been the highlights of the 2002 intro, while Ash & Elisabeth of the XI one respectively. I love the 2001 one. It looks very dark and climactic. Great vid, Shoryu! Keep them coming! Always looking forward to watching your content!
The more I thought about the choices for #2 and #1, it makes a lot of sense. At first, I thought some of them were ranked a little low, but it was your explanation for your second pic that more me appreciate it. It is EXCELLENTLY done as an intro. It says so much in the time it's given. I was thinking I bet it's 98, and even though I absolutely LOVE that intro (the music adds to it), I thought you were going to pick the intro that was the fully animated one for 98 (Kyo and Iori facing off in the alley). But sometimes, an intro doesn't need to be super animated to get its point across. Like how you ranked everything! My favorites are 98, 97, 96 especially, 94 for nostalgia (they went all out for Rebout, but 94 is great to look back on), and 2003 (it felt like it was calling back to the Orochi Saga after the NESTS saga ended).
Pretty accurate list, I totally forgot XV had a fully animated intro cinematic! Although I like the pacing of the original 98 opening more, the remixed song of 98 UM is catchy as heck
No offense to your ranking, but I feel that 2003 and XIII's intros should be higher in the list, and 98 UM and 2002 UM should be lower. Otherwise it is a good ranking, but not having Max Impact intros also hurt little bit. Edit: 8:11 I love how Ash burns sacred treasures team, like he is saying "Hi pals, this is my era now and I'm gonna burn all you up!". That foreshadowing alone makes 2003's intro an S tier.
Personally, I would have put 11 and '01 higher. I enjoy their use of symbols to showcase the characters, rather than focusing on the characters as a whole. I especially enjoy '01 as my favorite. The use of the iconic gloves on the clone characters highlights the heart of the conflict in a way that just tickles me.
God I hated how they represented the Ryo and Terry rivalry with XI. Maximum Impact 2 did that interaction so much better and put the respect on it that it deserved.
Ha! I was gonna say, i don' t remember seeing the KOF XV intro. Glad you explained that I have to load it up, which is really a odd decision. Great list Shoryu!
Love your list Shoryu but you glossed over an amazing intro with Max Impact 2 , it was the definition of HYPE and would easily be in the top 5 , btw Happy Birthday to my man , my personal GOAT Kyo MotherFreaking Kusanagi 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Kof 94 will always be my favorite intro . Especially seeing team fatal fury going against team AOF and Robert Garcia chilling in his white blazer is 🔥🔥 seeing the buildings in the background sets the stage and recently going to Venice Italy I got to see the direct inspiration . That's all I thought of when I was visiting was this is where Terry and Ryo taunted each other . Kof 94 shoulda been higher
Nostalgia bias for me but i really love KOF 95 intro since it first introduced Iori. The moment i saw that guy as a child i knew he would be on my team.
At #5 I remember I was riding high on the KOF train at this point, when the dropped this one. I was so excited to turn it especially with the original being one of my favorites. They didn't disappoint.
While I totally get limiting this to mainline games, it does mean some really fantastic intros don't get their due--most notably, the Dreamcast KOF '98 animated intro, which is still the best iteration of full anime-style KOF things. An odder absence is KOF XIII's original arcade intro: I don't imagine it placing highly--possibly just above XIV's--but it does what it aims for better than the console version, which to me just feels like a draft for the superior-in-every-way SP movie. I also have a special spot in my heart of the PS2 KOF 2001 intro: it's doing XV's "spotlight arbitrary characters" bit, which yes, BUGS, but it has a solid energy, and hey, May Lee gets a prime spot. Then there's the Maximum Impact intros: the first one has I think my favorite music of all the intros, and the second one does, I feel, a really good job of emphasizing how KOF has always been about connections.
I have to agree with you about the KOF 95 intro Shoryu it was also the first KOF that I played and the music is fantastic! I would have put it higher on the list though
Just wondering, though spin offs, how high would you rank the KOF maximum impact 1 and 2 if you include those in this list? still a KOF game after all.
KOF '98 (both original and UM), 95', and Dreammatch '99 on Dreamcast are probably my most favorites! *After watching the rest of the video*: Add 2000 and '97 in there too!
12:14 To be honest, I don't like it when fighting game intros use combo videos. The only exception is Bloody Roar II, since it mish-mashes combo videos with a live-action music video of "Carnation Reincarnation", which perfectly fits the tone of the game.
13:18 Masami Obari is a living legend! Here is something interesting, the dude worked on mecha animes and even +18 stuff Also, he REALLY loves drawing Mai as you can see in his portafolio 😁 11:49 I can imagine SNK saying "now that we will make our own version of KOF 2002, we will nerf those Eolith characters so our own creations will look cooler by comparison! Honwatly I kinda wish they'd bring Nameless back and maybe give him a rivalry with Krohnen as the ultimate meta joke, besides the character design is way too cool to not bring back
A lot of my favorites got knocked out early that hurt this one for me lol. 94, XI, 99, 98 UM all gotta skyrocket up in my opinion. XV, XIV and 02 UM could get a bump up too but I respect the list. The music in a lot of these ones resonate with me pretty hard. I'd switch 98 and 98 UM especially, 98 UM's intro is insane.
Hahahaha I get baited, i understand the video was a "Top of characters intros" , not the opening of the games 😆 Shoryu need to do one "top of characters interactions intros" now 😆
I was afraid you were gonna go with the XIII Climax intro and not include Type X Arcade Vanilla XIII Intro on the list which is one of my favorite intros in the series. It appears my fears were warranted 😢 List was ok. Liked that 2000 intro was so high. KoF MIRA intro deserved a spot since it did release in arcades and is incredible imo. Its a top 3 favorite KoF intro in my book.
KoF intros.... FINAL VERDICT!? FANTASTIC.... or, meh. I love how none of the intros ever really were considered 'bad', just 'meh'. That made me chuckle.
Kof 98 is my favourite, but the coolest intro for me is '96. I also prefer the intros that include all playable characters, it kinda gives some relevance to everyone in the game. The one I dislike most is '02 (figures), even as dream match a lot of things didnt make any sense, and it made Kensou, Chin and Seth Team look like Yamcha and Krillin.
I feel honorary mention should go to KOF Dream Match 1999 (Dreamcast KOF98 port). I still prefer that animated intro over KOFXV, and unlike XV, actually plays on start up 😆
The sprite work in the 95 intro is impeccable, just watching as Iori light the fire with his hand and Saisyu open his eyes is still impressive and the characters are very well drawn, I don't know why you left it so low. About XV's animation, it's even disappointing compared to others Obari has done, like Dominated Mind, which had a lot more animation frames. But anyway, the best intro is the one from KoF MI2, I don't know why you didn't include the intros from that saga.
99 was my very first KOF game. I wanted to know more about the characters after playing CVS for the first time was met with this classic. Little did I know it was a straight turnover part for the series. I didn't even know what a Goro Daimon was until 2k1 lmao
I expected KOF 99 dream match intro to be number 1, but it's not included in the list, kof 94 reboot could have made it in the list, too. I understand you wanted to keep the main games but since you included 98, 98um, 02,02um they could have a spot too 😃
While I do respect that this is your subjective list you were way too harsh on XIV's opening, personally I think even with the flaw that you mentioned the song flows so well with the transitions especially the "CHOOSE YOUR FIGHT!" part which gets me everytime
Well... to be honest I don't particularly agree with you on that one 😅... But it's okay to like different things... I hope one of these days you will do the ranking of the kof character select themes from worst to best too
Awesome topic and awesome video yet again SG. But not agree with your list 😉. Iori 🎂 scene intro should be higher, 2001 got awesome intro which connect with selection screen a very cool thing to notice, 00 intro is so bad 😅, always liked those back ground voices in 94 intro at the start, 96 intro should be at no.1 as it's just not got the best intro but also soundtracks, music heck even hitting voices overall 10/10.
KoF 2001 is just plain bad or frustrating in most of its aspects, but its intro isn't one of them. I still constantly think of the image of K', Kula, and K9999 all in that side by side on the regular
Glad to see someone who prefers the intro of vanilla KOF 98 over the 98UM one I prefer the opening theme of vanilla 98 over the arranged one 🎵 Maybe you should make a video talking about KOF tracks where the original version sounds better than the arranged ones KOF 99 is a good example
Neowave intro is BY FAR the worst, imagine the XII intro but somehow blander. Re-Bout is one the the best ones, the animated intro gets the job done at explaining who is each character in the roster and how they co-operate as a team. Dream Match 1999 might be my favorite however.
"It all began in '94" 🔥🗣
Kept on rolling in ‘95
Pieces were in place in '96
It came to the end in '97
And now we come and here we go
K O F is here again
The intro to KOF 94 is special to me because it was used in Terry Bogard's Smash trailer. Terry's presence in Smash is what what got interested in learning about SNK and becoming an SNK fan. The fact that 1994 is my birth year is an extra bonus.
2000 is totally the best one for me. Short but direct, hype and powerful.
Yes 2000 is in another level statically and design
2000's intro is famous even outside of fighting game circles
@@CaptainGinyu Really? Didnt know that.
The UM intros remains godlike perfection.
Ngl 94’s is my absolute favourite, the buildup, Kyo catching the envelope, Terry’s “ok!”, Ryo’s “Ora Ora!”

I like the scene where K' is seen wearing his new special red glove, the hero rising from the ashes

Good work KOF 2001/Eolith 👍
It's a remix of that song you said mixed up with Igniz's boss theme "I Am the Strongest"
Many people hate on that game but its one of my favourites and that intro is top 3 imo
@@Regula_joe It's the game that got me into KOF
The fact that the kof 98 dreamcast intro isn't on here is wild
The KOF Intros go absolutely Hard.

Totally agree.
And not cheating at all, if you include ultimate, unlimited and 15 intros.
Moreover, maximum impact intros should have been there, too

Kyo and Iori's rivalry is overrated
They shouldn't be the main focus in the intros after the Orochi Saga games
The more I thought about the choices for #2 and #1, it makes a lot of sense. At first, I thought some of them were ranked a little low, but it was your explanation for your second pic that more me appreciate it. It is EXCELLENTLY done as an intro. It says so much in the time it's given.

These intros are one of the main reasons I think it would be cool if the series got an anime adaptation.
In 2d. Not 3d like KoF Destiny was. Sometimes their expressions were off.
now we need a top video about every KOF ending

What do you MEAN KoF 98?! It's the intro to the best fighting game ever developed "Dong Dong Never Die"!
Thats why Shoryu said "its subjective."
Better improve your listening comprehension kid.
@@DontKnowDontCare6.9 You clearly missed the joke lmao
Dong Dong Never Die uses KoF 98's intro theme and parodies it entirely.
To me, nothing beats the 96 intro. Still my favorite.

Kof 2002 music is so iconic
you make really good gaming videos. Hope to see more of your videos
Thank you! I’m glad you liked them!
Fun fact: every team that is shown on KOF2002 intro is complete. You can see Chin and Kensou receiving hits from Clark and Yuri, then it shows Athena.
Will the Fatal Fury intros be next?
1996, the images were so synch to the music
‘02 UM probably takes the cake for me.

I like 13... Peak kof intro and game for me... Second is 15.
99 Dream Match on the Dreamcast....
"Sigh"....
all agree but kof94 must be in top 5 at least
#1 SNK the way to play
Kof 98 as number 1 ?? Fan boy 😂😂😂😂😂😂 !!
For me, XIII is number one !
But i must say what i'm agree with you for the ranking
KoF 2001 is just plain bad or frustrating in most of its aspects, but its intro isn't one of them. I still constantly think of the image of K', Kula, and K9999 all in that side by side on the regular
98um🔥💯
For me
Kof 97 2001 98um 2002um
Glad to see someone who prefers the intro of vanilla KOF 98 over the 98UM one
I prefer the opening theme of vanilla 98 over the arranged one 🎵
Maybe you should make a video talking about KOF tracks where the original version sounds better than the arranged ones
KOF 99 is a good example
Neowave intro is BY FAR the worst, imagine the XII intro but somehow blander.
Re-Bout is one the the best ones, the animated intro gets the job done at explaining who is each character in the roster and how they co-operate as a team.
Dream Match 1999 might be my favorite however.
96 top 8..............UNFOLLLOOOOOOWWWWWWWW
