3:33 It's more than 'inspiration' for Kill La Kill, Gurren Lagaan, and basically anything from trigger. Hiroyuki Imaishi-San is literally the Animation director for alot of these shows, or at least some of the episodes or fight scenes. He worked for both Gainax AND Trigger, even doing work on Eva... he's by far my favorite animator of all time because his style is so good, especially in action scenes.

Thanks for saying it, I was going to as well. He’s also a founder of Trigger. I have a lot of his art books, as well as Yoh Yoshinari and Sushio. Any studio trigger art book I have is amongst my top ten. Their animation is just so wacky, fun, dynamic, and unexpecting. And they’re always pushing their shapes, I love it.

Goddamn if you released the music you created for this as an album, I would buy it so fast. It fits FLCL so well, and the inspiration from The Pillows is felt as honoring them instead of just copying them, which is always a risk when drawing inspiration.

Something about seeing those 6 episodes when I was a teenager fascinated me so much that it stuck with me to this day. And as an adult, I see them so differently, but just as lovingly to this day. You have good taste! I adore FLCL for its mind bending creativity. That’s amazing you memorized the Japanese script. Listening to these clips I was horrified at the English voices. I guess it would take some real passion to bring across the magic of the original.

FLCL is one of my favorite shows of all time. I love the gray middle ground characters, who are packed full of flaws and good aspects, I love how consistent their motivations are. I love the soundtrack and animation and themes. It is as good as I think storytelling can get.
I really wish this level of creativity from the 2000s was still around, but it looks like medical mechanicus was able to flatten our creativity with corporations getting their grubby fingers into every aspect of the entertainment industry and Corraling everything towards mass appeal for maximum profit while paying the artists beans and discouraging creative types from every entering the field professionally.

FLCL!!! Watched this one late at night, went to bed right after, then woke up a different person. 10/10 experience.
There's really nothing I can say about the theme that hasn't already been said, but at the very least I can say that one thing that really hit me was "The fog that makes the world look so much smaller."
I grew up in a place that, simply put, was bad. My family? Also bad.
My childhood was spent dreaming of a life of freedom where I could do anything, and go wherever I wanted.
My teenage years were spent in long bouts of silent depression and outbursts of misplaced rage at the realization that I COULD HAVE had those things, but was robbed of them.
Adulthood? We'll see. The bat's in-hand and swinging, it's just a matter of finally hitting something!

I still remember when I first saw this anime. It was 2003 at Anime USA in Virginia. We had just finished our Mystery Anime Theater 3000 showing we had done, and after everyone left we stayed in the room and one of the people who stayed back took out his laptop and we watched some new fan subs he had brought with him. One of which was the entirety of FLCL. We were up until nearly 8am the following morning but I still remember how amazing and epic it was watching it for the first time on a projector. God what I wouldn’t give to experience that weekend all over again with my friends.

@@SeveralGhost 3% of people with epilepsy actually have photosensitive epilepsy I myself am not part of that percentage so I wouldn't know but I do know it's severity varies from person to person and that us epileptics support each other so they might have a list of films and TV shows reviewed by other people with how "flashy" they are but the reason there are warnings despite it only being 3% is because a fit can if lasting for more than 5mins means brain damage and even death which is kinda scary so despite me not having it I still panic when I see flashing lights sometimes

I’m pretty sure former trigger staff were gainax artist so it’s seem logic that by their work on FLCL (and also NGE) influenced every other anime they produced.
We can compare the first anime of trigger (Kill la Kill) to evangelion or gurren lagann, they share the alien invader part :).
Gainax and Trigger are bond together and i will love forever the fact that the story is deep and always carry multiple messages.

Thanks for this deep dive, this really brought me back, I got introduced to FLCL through adult swim's Toonami over 20 years ago. This show really hit so many emotions while watching it that when it was over I had to keep going back to pick up on things I missed the first time around. Then I ended up getting the Pillow's album just to bring back some of the nostalgia of this show and the emotions some of the scenes produced.

Having grown up watching FLCL then recently watching EVA, I loved seeing where FLCL took entire scenes or ideas the team had making EVA, but just made them better. To me it seemed like whatever the team learned making EVA, they pumped straight into FLCL, making it comedic and fast paced, which makes it a classic. And super easy to rewatch.
