wood grain does not match, yep its a Gibson second I can always tell LOL
looks fake as hell oops it a Tom Murphy guitar
Some of the Greco Series 800 and above were actually built to 1959 Burst construction specifications. Greco went as far as to source old growth Honduran Mahogany as well as Brazilian Rosewood for build materials. Greco also commissioned Macon to design and build PAF style pickups for those special guitars.
I only achieved an 84% score on that test.
Congrats on the new home. I hope you were able to succeed in buying the new much larger property you had mentioned, you could then designate your new home as “The Trogly Compound”!
Lawsuit era? So we’re talking 2019 Deans, then? Lol.
Really tho, what era could not be described as a "lawsuit era"? Shit happens every day
Someone should sue Murphy Lab for highway robbery!
@@che2335 Why? They’re worth every penny. Fantastic instruments.
@@ryanfulldark2775
They are a fair price as long as you recognize that a lot of the cost comes from the exclusivity and cosmetics.
@@dirtydanthesecretsauceman8519 The cost is from whatever one is willing to pay for the pinnacle of playability and tone in our era.
Couple of years in Trogly University and I'm acing identifying guitars I never play or see IRL. Why do I love this channel?
We need a Troglys University t-shirt!
Trogly will not only tell if it's fake or real, but also throw in the year as well. That's insane!
At those times, you couldn't talk about fakes. All these Japanese guitars had their own names on their headstocks so they weren't implying to be anything else. They were just making great guitars, and some of such a high quality, that e.g. Fender started up their Fender Japanese Venture company because the guys from Tokai and Greco were making guitars better than what their US counterparts were producing that time. Fender Japan used Fujigen at the start which was exactly the same factory that was making Greco guitars. I own a 1995 Japanese Orville by Gibson Les Paul 57R Custom that has fret edge binding, long neck tenon and Gibson 57 classics. They were making these guitars since late 1992 before Gibson was even doing historic reissues (bringing back long neck tenons, Gibson '57 classic PU's, etc.) so the Japanese were ahead of their time.
You should review a Greco one day, they are really underrated for what they are
Yeah, my father in law has one, he's had it since he was a kid, I've played it and its fantastic!
Oh hey Haru.
@@KazeAkiyama Hey kaze
If he does, the price will go through the roof.
fake garbage
Now when are you gonna tell us about the Snake Pit story? You’ve left us hanging forever Trog! C’mon Mr. 92%. What ever happened? Did you get your money back? Did the scammer get caught? I hope you got some compensation and closure.
+1 would love to see a video on it, I don't think there's a recent review (if I remember correctly)
As somebody who owns & loves a pair of Vintage Greco LPs, this video makes me very happy :) Thanks Trogly !
I got the first 2 Greco's right just by looking at the colour. And you? (screwed up on a lot of the rest btw) I own a ObG LP 57R Custom Fujigen made btw but love and admire Tokais & Grecos as well... Viva Japan!
Greco's are damn nice.✌
Austin’s knowledge is incredible, He just helped me with a purchase a couple of days ago. He gave me great insight to the Gibson I was buying. His service is well worth it ! Thank you Austin!🎸🎸🎸👏🏼
What did you buy?
@@Tim8tei an older SG.
He's a Gibson savant.
I think Gneco is what some people call Grecos because the cursive "r" in the logo looks like an "n".
CONGRATULATIONS on your closing my friend !
Congrats on the house 🏠
That Greco that tripped you up: I felt sure you would have caught the smaller bolts on the tail piece.
(I missed about half of them. The ones I got right were due to paying attention to your show! Thank you!)
Congrats on the new house! Can't wait to see what you do with the new workspace.
When the guitar is sus
Congrats on the new home and working space!
Congrats on the new house! I hope you have a good space for your recording. I might miss the old basement.
Let’s wait 2 months to see that new guitar museum 🙌🏻🙌🏻 congrats 🍾
I admire your honesty - it would have been so easy to do the quiz before filming and get the answers, then when you filmed yourself taking the quiz got perfect results. Some of those copies look very good and need to be really looked at. Great video.
you are so close with the years on these shows how good you are at what you do
Super Real Greco's started in 1980-81 when FujiGen installed a CNC machine, serious instruments
Still loving your content Austin! Please keep bringing us our daily dose of gid-fiddle knowledge!
Grats on your new house!!!! More space for more boxes and stuff in the work space 😂
Congrats! Looking forward to seeing the new setup!
Great job Austin, in spotting the fakes. You really know your stuff. Congratulations on buying your new house.
Congrats on the new house deal! New working space, looking forward!
Congrats on the new house Austin!! 👏👏👏
Some of the lawsuits are really easy to spot but, man, the Greco ones are so so so hard to tell from a Gibson
There were some amazing guitars that came out of Japan in the 70's. I have a 72 Aria Blonde SG and it's is an amazing guitar. They changed their name in 1975 to Aria Pro II
Congrats on the New House! ;)
Congrats on the house!!
I did worst , the greco are really tricky , but I didn't got wrong the two that two guitars , I take that as a victory
Congrats on the new place!!! Can’t wait to see the new studio!
Congratulations on the house Trogly
This was a cool video. You really know your stuff!
congrats on the new pad dude
That was impressive! Greco prices gonna go up lol.
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
But, which one?
@@trulsolsen683 I hope Austin was able to purchase that extra large compound he was looking at. He’d never run out of room and would actually have the space to realize his museum dream.
I got 19/25, not bad for a guy who has no hands-on experience with Les Pauls!
Congratulations on the house mate
Congrats on the new house! Can't wait to see the new working space.
Greco was a quality builder in the day...
Congrats on the house, thanks for all you give us!
I am sure this result is hard to match! And those Grecos not only looks great, but are great players. I have a 82 335 which I really like.
Greco was just how the R looked like an N, various logos date the guitars, ring logo, open O etc, Gneco is the earliest, usually 1972-73
Hoooolllyyyy crap, Austin is a BEAST at identifying Gibsons!
Congrats! Looking forward to it!
i own 4 greco’s and 1 burny i love them all i actually want more of them thank you for even acknowledging them there beautiful guitars
Yeah, they're great, I dont own any,but always wanted one..my father in law has a Greco from 74' and its actually awesome in my opinion!👍
@@wesleyalan9179 I took this quiz last week when it showed up in my Reverb feed/notification/email. After taking the quiz I did some research into the early ‘80s Greco and was amazed at the honest effort they went through to build a authentic 1959 Burst replica. If I can find the article again I’ll link it to you Wesley. At one point Greco was using old growth Honduran Mahogany and Brazilian Rosewood for the few replica Bursts they were building. Really an amazing story. Cool about your FIL having a guitar at all, my FIL’s interests were mostly in the realm of tools used by fighting men of the 101st Screaming Eagles! 🍪
@@hkguitar1984 oh wow, thats cool, man! I didn't really know that about Greco...I did know that they weren't junk though!
@@hkguitar1984...well,my father in law is also into Nazi Germany memorabilia too, so...

Sherlock Trogly hard at work 😂
Good Luck on your New House 🏠😀👍✌👏❤
I have a 1976 MIJ Encore E 49 NT natural finish lawsuit Les Paul guitar. with a bolt on neck, covered humbuckers, and reflector knobs. it's in pretty good condition I had to replace the nut when I first got it. and I put a new set of Elixir poly wound strings on it. and it has turned out to be a really good guitar. especially for the price I paid for it and because I have an addiction to natural finish guitars. there was no way I could turn it down no doubt.
Congratulations on the purchase of your new home.
I sanded off the red wine finish on an 89 Les paul studio, Love the natural wood finish also :) ... had a Peavey t-60 in natural wood finish for yrs and loved that look ever since, nice woody acoustic tone that over nitro or esp paint hides
Congratulations on the new house 🏘️
A Greco EG600 Les Paul Custom copy has been my main guitar for years, they really do make good guitars :). Congrats on the new house btw
Have you ever reviewed a Dusk Tiger Les Paul? Saw one today for the first time.
This is a great advertisement for your channel. Showing off your knowledge.
Til: I could get ripped off kinda easily. Oh well. On the bright side, I can't believe I got a real Gibson LP Custom today for just $200! Insane luck I guess!
😁👍 Really enjoyed that I got loads of them wrong.
Good to Austin, need help moving?
i love
guitars
Congratulations, Austin!
That rail pickup in the '76 Custom looks like a DiMarzio X2N. Bill Lawrence had thin rails.
All the 70's Ibanez models were fantastic. Still have my es1275 double neck, it plays and sounds better and it has better wood and craftsmanship than my 88 Gibson. They also made guitars under the Montoya brand, I have a 1959 ish black beauty custom that is still one of my favorites to play. Magnum made really nice strats in the 70's. Still have two of those, cloned as real fenders. And they are made of higher quality, old growth maple. Also have two piece solid rock maple bodies. Most of these Japanese 70's guitars were made by people who took great pride in their work.
Japanese manufacturing’s pride in their work has always set them apart in most everything they build. That is part of the reason old effects pedals made in Japan fetch a premium when being sold these days.
This takes me back to my Mann, bolted neck, black Les Paul Custom copy that I bought used in 1977. Sold it in 1984 to buy a Kramer...
I was born in 88...
Lolol
What a coincidence that I'm sitting with my 1974 Greco LP Custom right as this shows up for me. Favourite LP style I've owned besides my ARZ-400.
Congrats on the house.
When the Les Paul is sus
glad to hear about the house, you must be excited
congrats on the house
Congratulations on the closing!!!
You did much better than I would have done!
Always look for mark tools on the fretboard for a genuine Gibson.
Yes, they did make Les Paul Standards in 1973. Not a lot of them, and they were a good $200 more expensive than the Deluxe, but they did exist. I bought a Deluxe new in ‘73, and there was a new Standard hanging next to it. They were both Tobacco Sunburst, which I think was still a custom finish on Les Pauls back then. This was at Leo’s Music in Oakland, CA, and they did a fair amount of special-order Gibsons back then. I think this was before the Leo’s Burst reissues, as I don’t remember seeing any then. Guitar Trader in New Jersey also did Burst reissues around that time, probably early ‘80s. The Tobacco Sunburst Standard I played at Leo’s in ‘73 had a plain top-as far as I could tell, it was the same guitar as the Deluxe I bought that day, except for the pickups-the Standard of course had full-size humbuckers. I wanted that Standard, but it was $600-that was more than a Custom! I couldn’t afford it anyway-I had barely enough money for the Deluxe, which as I recall I got for around $400. The only thing special about my Deluxe was the Tobacco Sunburst finish; regular colors on Deluxes back then were Goldtop and godawful bright Cherry “Clownburst” Sunburst, so I was glad to have a Tobaccoburst one. First Les Paul I ever saw in that color, but as the ‘70s wore on I started seeing more of them. If they’d used figured maple for the tops on those, I’d probably still have it! Mine was plain as could be.
You definitely need to review some Grecos!!!
I remember one of my friends’ stepdad had a “Fendor” electric 12-string back in the early 70s. (The stepdad had no idea it wasn’t authentic.)
Was it a copy of a Fender Electric XII, or was it a generic design with a “Fendor” decal?
@@jfinester It had a Fender _look_ to it, although I wasn’t familiar enough with the XII model to be able to say how close a copy it was. The logo looked legit except for the “O.”
greco is by far the best lawsuit. truly stellar instruments.
Love waking up to my daily does of guitar information. Good morning and much love from dubai!
This video was very satisfying.
I got a 48% on that damn quiz. I thought some of those 70s Les Pauls looked like crap.
If anyone ever destroys a beautifully made MIJ lawsuit Greco or Burny by trying to make it a counterfeit Gibson, I'll personally slap them. Those guitars are so awesome as they are.
That "Ganson" reminded me that in music magazines back in the 70s you could stumble upon adverts from an Itlian maker that named his models "Frescher" and "Gherson", you can imagine the logos. Lol.
Great video! I think more attention needs to be paid with what is under the truss rod cover? I know that some of the lawsuit (for lack of a better term,) have the correct one way truss rod, and some don’t. Even the chibsons I’ve seen have not built their guitars with the correct one. I would like to see under the hood as a common picture.
I agree with you. On reverb it is easy enough to request a photo of the truss rod before finagling any purchase. If the seller won’t provide a truss-rod photo when requested then you know it’s best to pass on that guitar. Even Trogly gets stung sometimes when he unpacks the guitar and sees the truss-rod has been maxed out. 100% needs to be checked prior to sale.
I had a Greco for a VERRY brief time, before trading into my Spear RD150 SE. That Greco actually played surprisingly well, but the Spear is definitely better. You should check one out some time! Greetings and well wishes from Utah!
distance between the bridge to the bridge pickup is noticable
NERD!
Fun video. I would’ve failed. But the little I know about vintage Gibson guitars I’ve learned from Trogly. Gotta get my daily dose of guitar information.
The Gneco's were Greco but the r looked more like a n so they become known as Gneco.
IMO the superior neck fastening would be screws over glue for interchangeability.
New place? New working space? COOL!
That rail style humbucker is a Dimarzio X2N or Activator
Far out man
A huge problem where I'm from (Philippines) is that people would take cheap Les Paul/Strat copies and put Gibson/Fender silkscreens to fool unsuspecting buyers.
Dude,I had "Ganson" LP ..heavy like lead..but very beautiful.. light maple, pauwi inlays, toggle by knobs, comfort cut, mini humbuck P-90's...(everyone thought it was a Gibson) bought/sold/re-purchased...3(!) times..last seen on way to Brazilian Punk festival..
Maybe Gneco is just a typo and they meant Greco. I forgot about those. Weren't to bad for the price. Something just didn't look right about the pickguard on the Greco before the artisan. I could see why you would've thought the Ibanez was an Electra having borrowed my brothers in the early seventies I was quite familiar with them. The headstock on his was a bit more like a gibson style headstock. But it was a heavy beast to have strapped on especially if you had a thin or even a normal width strap. But it played well and he later put in some early Dimarzios from before they had the 9 volt power source. I've seen Marquis brand guitars in arch tops lp style and SGs but I've never heard of Marchis. Maybe as far as the midnight blue lp I'll have to just search all brands but I'm almost certain there was a gibson branded model with metal dust in the paint that made it glow in the right light. I'm thinking it was silver dust though. Congrats on your house. Can't wait to see you in your new surroundings and studio
Now everybody calls abusively "lawsuit" any LP copy to raise the price, but the real lawsuits from Gibson back in time were only on those with glued necks and open book headstocks; for instance the perfect looking Ibanez with bolt on necks are not real lawsuits.
I learned to play on my oldest brother’s 70s Memphis that someone once tried to trade a real LP for (when it was in its prime). Badly needs a refret. Prob still has the same strings on it from the 90s
My first guitar was an early 80s Memphis LP. I remember the action being extremely high.
Nice
In that red lespaul the bridge pup is not a Bill Laurence, is a DiMarzio X2N power plus, a very strong pickup...👍
The Greco and Tokia LPs from the 70’s are great guitars and play and sound great.
92% tells me one thing, that you were 52% better than me at figuring out what these guitars were. You are a pro.
My first electric, about 1976, was an Ibanez Les Paul copy. Nice guitars.
Not only were Greco's great looking guitars, they were great performing guitars. The Japanese were no strangers to guitar building! These set neck models were as great as any Gibson any day of the week.
Some of the lawsuit era copies were pretty good guitars in looks, sound, and playability.
