This project fetched a respectable amount I'd say - maybe we will see it restored in the future!

Walmart is here 🙄
Trogly im sorry but you are nuts thinking a rebuilt husk with aftermarket parts could fetch that much. Not to mention the parts would cost money too. There is no way anybody would even break even restoring this thing.
Btw the cracks near the volume and tone knobs is really common on most old SG you if you watch some YT videos for sale I’d look up 1967 Gibson SG and you will see it’s fairly common and the 60s SG the reason it cracks over time is because of the drilling in that corner of the guitar
Hey trogly is there anywhere I should check to buy a Gibson Les Paul custom husk or body and neck
Bananas at large is a Legit Store ! Brick and mortar with 2 locations and have been open since the 70's. The store in San Rafael , Ca is where that SG you looked at is. Last time I was in there they had a No Caster on the wall that caught my eye right when I walked in. Although when I first heard the name I said "excuse me". lol Locals just call it Bananas.
I watch Jay Leno to see and learn about cars I'll never be able to own. I watch you to learn about and see guitars I'll never own. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and giving us a chance to live vicariously through you!! Now... if you'll excuse me I'll get back to my epiphones! Lol!
Check out Trogly's video about the David Gilmour guitar auction. It's non stop eye candy for over an hour.
Trogly is the Jay Leno of guitars (edit: minus the chin)
Maybe somebody can prove it was smashed by Pete Townshend , that would be worth 2500 to buy.
My first thought
A friend of mine in England has an SG special body he got at an early Who concert!
I was thinking the same.
My thought as well. He used SGs from this period
Pete's SG's never had humbucker pickups. Maybe this is one that was supposedly trashed by Angus Young's tech when it quit working.
Mathew Scott probably bought it. Seems like its be right up his alley
Matthew Scott is a treasure.
Its awesome to see people finally start talking about him. Love that guy
Ha haaaaaa I think that you are right.....
@@WilhelmWilder ya for sure he seems like a good kid....
Why do y'all keep calling him a kid lol, he's like 23
$2000 for a guitar split in two with a broken off neck and considerable moisture damage? Complete and utter waste of money. That truss rod is never gonna budge, on top of the extensive wood repairs it needs a refin, those pots are surely shot, and depending on whether or not the pickups are potted they could be toast on the inside as well. Absolutely worthless is an understatement when you're paying any money whatsoever for a guitar that will never again be in playing condition. If whoever spent 2 grand on that thinks that wood will hold under string tension they're insane. If you're willing to spend $2000 on a guitar not even worth fixing, just spend the extra thousand and grab one in decent shape.
The nice thing about mahogany is that it's so easy to glue up. If it's not missing a lot of wood along that break it could be repaired almost seamlessly.
NO WAY anyone is repairing this "seamlessly"
@TUUK2006 Actually it wouldn't be hard at all.
@@stinkywizzleteats420 Right now I am restoring the SG with almost the same number - in fact, even a child will cope with the restoration!
@@TUUK2006 mahogany tends to break very cleanly, it's entirely possible that this guitar now looks great
Sg = smashed guitar
The only Gibson solid body Never Out Of Production.. 1964, Highest Sales !.
There’s gotta be something here that we are missing? Too many bidders for that pile of junk. Rare pots/pups? Brazilian rosewood fretboard? Rare model/run. It just doesn’t make sense to pay that much money for a complete beater? Especially if you can buy a real vintage one for that price. Bizarre.
People always bid stuff like this to the moon because they mistakenly think there is money to be made.
@@mitch2883 I’m thinking someone really needs those parts or there is money to be made. Just don’t make good sense anyways. But yeah. It’s weird that people will bid like crazy on a guitar husk, or parts when they could easily buy a complete working guitar of the same model for the same or less money? Maybe I’m in the wrong business. Lol
@@IrisGalaxis I understand that. But I do whatever I want with my guitars regardless. I’ve stuck EMG’s in my Les Paul custom, and have modified all of my Gibson’s. I don’t carry guilt when it comes to things I’m passionate about. But I understand. Beard strokers get their panties in a twist pretty easy. But all my modifications are reversible and I keep all my original parts. Just in case I croak, my family can still get good coin for my guitars. But I’ve seen studio husks selling for 800-900$? That’s just crazy too me. But if people are willing to pay a “guilt” tax, more power too them. I guess next time I sell a guitar I’ll just part it out. Lol. But I understand what you’re saying. It just seems odd too me.
It’s auction fever, happens all the time.
This is the new Pete Townsend " Relic".
What you see if what you get”. Man you gotta love the resale value on these Gibsons. I’m gonna give this beat up les Paul in my basement to my grandkids and tell him that no matter what the fuck they do to it, it’ll probably worth like $5000 one day. Hell, crack in in half, set it on fire...then wait...The longer you wait the more it’ll cost lmaoo
Like “Here grandson, I want you to do me a favor and take this vintage Gibson, crack it in half, pee on it, then throw it in the swimming pool in the backyard, and one day.....ONE DAY...... it will cost thousands of dollars MORE than what I paid for it”
Its a Pete Townshend signature model.
Ex-Gibson Montana employee here. I’ll confirm that guitars that do not meet QC standards are brought to the saw and cut into pieces!
Uhhh, yikes
@Jeff Lee lol...that’s pretty good!!
Appears to be getting better.
Or run over with a bulldozer in the case of the Firebird X
@@rockerbob949 Maybe, but I bet they know how to spell Mensa.
@@EarthAltar and I never said I knew how to spell!! Damn man, like to stir shit up or what? I got your point.
More money then sense whoever as paid that much needs to see a shrink and quick.
My 69 SG had neck come off when taxi driver braked hard. Guitar was in case too. I glued it back together using Araldite,-still ok to this day!
Damn I would like to see a good luthier like twoodfrd do a repair on this.
This is really interesting. Id love to see how it will end up
No joke man.... Trogley is the shit when it comes to this kinda stuff.
Brad "The Guitalogist" is pretty interesting as well.
Even if he just uses the parts alone are worth it.....
@Shane miller. Completely agree to each statement
That's the El Kabong guitar- traditionally broken during the hatchet swing to someone's head.
Very popular during a period of consumption of alcohol and stimulants. I had one.
One man's junk is another man's junk
See, I see all the "I don't know what all this is . . . " and I immediately think "scam". A bunch of random parts with no way to validate they're original? Nope nopitty nopey-nope.
Expect to find some amazing "barn finds" very soon. I lost a storage unit which contained several pre-1960 Les Paul Specials, a couple of student acoustics, and half a Dumble. If you bought my storage unit in Reno, you hit pay dirt.
Dang, were you in jail or something? Could have sold one to keep the unit or pay down your debt on it.
Too bad. I feel for you man.
I would totally rock it just to see what it is to being fixed i think it would sound like new
Does no one else notice that they are lying in a wet tarp? Like they got hosed off.
Yes. I noticed that and was about to comment, but you beat me too it! Anyway, it doesn't seem like it was hosed off since the guitar appears to be dry. They probably dug it out of a basement or shed and just dropped it onto a tarp outside so as to get some pictures in better light.
LOL someone will buy it...
@@whatshappening177 someone did buy it.
Noticed that too.
it's laying on a pool table covered by a pvc cover ... not wet at all .. just wrinkles in the plastic.
That's a good amount of work to put into these parts, good luck to the buyer of this parts lot. Not for me, I have enough stuff to keep me busy.
Happy Trogmas!
Sometimes a pile of crap is just a pile of crap.
It amazes me what having Gibson on something can do. I think it has moved from fanboy to cult member.
Banana's at Large was associated with "Banana and the Bunch", a Marin County Band.
Banana was the bass player for The Youngbloods, if I remember correctly.
There was a Gibson Les Paul Smartwood on OfferUp two days ago with a case. Price was $400. It went fast.
My job used to commonly find me in attics.in my time I found to many guitars being stored in attics in an area where humidity and heat is typically high. A very heart breaking thing to see no matter how much the guitar was worth.
Not if you live in the south.
Would I rock a 1960's SG? Heck, I did and I do. I got it used in the '60's when I got out of the army, and I still have it. It's a Standard, with the Maestro, but the small pickguard. It doesn't look new, but it looks a hell of a lot better than that train wreck. Serial Number 209XXX, which was a 1964 number. My favorite guitar of them all, and I've owned quite a few.
Bananas at large! That’s Neil Schon’s guitar shop in San Rafael CA. They are awesome!
I am so sad because that is my dream guitar is a late 60s early 70s red Gibson Sg with batwing pick guard and maestro vibrola I’m so disappointed to see one in that condition
Can anyone help me understand how to get that sold price guide to come up on reverb on a regular basis? When I look under sold listings, I feel like sometimes it comes up and sometimes it doesn't, what am I missing?
ahh, to back in time...
1974, theres an SG Standard in a state of refin.
Finished, $150 with a body crack and high action.
This was a '64 and the neck was set flat' instead of pitched. ok, 12 electrics and aall.
Gave up on the SG for a Strat...
Wish Satterlee And Chapin would have set it.
man, cat i knew fixed it. Played like a 'Paul.
Second G 400 here. old, not dead but The SG is my all time fave axe.
Bro, you have the BEST guitar site online I have found so far! You cover all the bases from new stuff to great vintage stuff. You are super knowledgable, and your videos are first class. I am an old touring pro from back to the 70's playing 60's Fender basses but when I discovered 60's Thunderbirds.... that was IT for me!! Had great influences.....JE and Martin Turner....and
Tom Petersson later on. His tone on the first Cheap Trick album CRUSHES that signature T-Bird tone!
Look forward to your reviews, rundowns, and everything you do! And you are a really likeable cool guy that tells it straight. Wish we could hang sometime and just 'bud up' and talk guitars! You are in Ohio, right? Thanks for being online. Your site makes my day!! Tony Carl Perrysburg, Ohio.
Trogly... I'm so disappointed you didn't say, "But of course" when mentioning the Grey Poupon jar... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
6:05 What is with all of the water droplets on the tarp under the guitar?
There must be an ounce of gold hidden inside the control cavity, no other explanation.
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
Can’t watch now , but I can’t wait
Hey Master Trogly!
Enjoy your holidays and take a break from YT. Happy greetings to your wife and kids.
Thank you for your informative and interesting videos.
Dang - pretty bad ass. Cant wait to have my original ‘65 Gibson SG with a tremolo cleaned up 💦
1:21 absolutely NOT! Wrong "volute". Welcome to the Martin World :-)
just found your show, I use to spend the winters in Sherwood, my ex Mom worked at a plastics plant in Bryan and we would come up from Austin to Sherwood everywinter. I got to pay to have you look at a guitar of mine thats a mystery
Heck yeah, I'm a ghost until the end of the auction... BOO! Winning bid with no time to counter, I love it!
Was that Sean Astin playing the guitar? Man I loved that guy in the 50 First Dates movie !
I’d love to see a video of that pile of parts being restored.
$100 would be a fair price.
Several things come to my mind when I look at this video. I first think about Tommy Shaw and how he stopped playing this type of guitar because he kept separating the neck in this fashion. The other thing that comes to my mind is how that full pickguard was intended to conceal abnormalities in the body build. SG models with half the pickguard look as though they were given a lot more TLC on the workbench.
I don't think I would have bought this, unless I had a new SG and thought I could retrofit it with all the salvageable parts from this model. Make any sense?
If it sounds good, feels nice in my hands, and plays well I will play it. I am not above playing Epiphones. I actually have the Epiphone Les Paul Classic worn in the yellow metallic color. After a pickup switch out, changing the pots and toggle switch, that is my go too guitar. I also had to do some serious neck work to get rid of fret buzz. Seemed mine they did not cap the frets and level it correctly. But that is an easy fix most intermediate and advanced guitarists should be able to handle.
Happens often when you start the bidding low. People get invested and get into bidding wars with other invested individuals.
Trogly how did your intro song come about? I absolutely adore it, it just never gets old.
It is free stock music that just stuck

@@Trog your awsome trogly one day my dream is to get a guitar from you. It's a bucket list wish.❤️🎄
sounds like Stills
Would love to see someone restore this.
If I was to restore it, I'd probably refinish it in Ebony, which would help cover up the repairs - and wouldn't really have the usual problem of refinish destroying the value, seeing the shape the guitar is in now.
Remeber seeing this listing on eBay a few times in my daily searches.
Trogly jacking up the prices on junk again. I love beat up guitars. Or atleast want one lol. It would match me cut up put back together and hoping for the best. Bud I'd hope to get this from a grandma for fifty bucks or a yard sale but those days are gone thanks internet
Always enjoy your different videos and wish that this got fixed back up and rocked back up 👍😎✌️
Bananas At Large is my local go-to guitar shop. Awesome place!
whose betting that mathew scott bought it
I would definitely rock it once restored. Your friend in tone, Norman Mozley
I can't believe that pile of junk went for so much . I'd like to see the restore but there is a good chance it will just sit .
You called it for what it is. A pile of junk.
hell yeah! i would restore it but leave it grimy like it is now. love that look
Down plays the totally broken off half as readily repairable and instead worries about the micro cracks on the bottom half of the guitar LMAO
This is a job for Mark Erlewine!
And yet when I tried selling my mint condition 2016 ES335 Studio with original hard shell case the only offer I got was $625 and the guy wanted me to pay for shipping.
I would have tried buying that, what a story to tell for the winning bidder
Never a hunk of junk, old wood is amazing , and a good luthier can get the job done. One man's junk, is another man's treasure.
I do hope this gets restored and not just stripped for parts. Any news on that unfortunate "basket case" LP special that had the truss exposed at the back of the neck?
Now all we gotta do is wait for Matthew Scott to release his video "I bought the broken 60's eBay SG"
If it had p90’s and dots I’d say Pete Townsend. That would be a huge score.
Goodnight everyone
Have you already done a review on the 2020 epiphone texan.
Hope I haven't missed it.
Would like to hear a review from someone who's familiar with epiphone or gibson
I wonder if that SG came from the Nashville Flood back in 2010. Could that be a '64 from the Soundcheck Storage facility ?
No, absolutely not. That is without a doubt from between 1969 and 1971. Headstock shape, Gibson logo, body carves, witch hat knobs, Patent Number T-Tops; everything points towards late 60s/early 70s. A 1964 would have much deeper carves, a larger headstock, the crown inlay would be higher on the headstock itself, and the logo wouldn't chip away like that. The 1964 SG Standard also would've had the teardrop pickguard and not the full-face batwing guard, which is a dead giveaway.
Damn this video is crazy
I'd rock it, love the trapeze.
Dude I got a black 69 S.G. custom all original just missing vibrato for $250.no shit .a year ago.my son loves it so for Christmas this year I got him a epiphone S.G. for his first.
One of Austin’s first guitars too. 👌
IME, you glue it together and it sounds better than all other same model. The best mid 60's
(Travers) melody maker I ever played had the neck attached with drywall screws n titebond after it broke off.
As long as the neck is ok that's a simple fix ive repaired about 3 SGs with complete neck off and one that was almost the same neck and body in 2 pieces that one went from cherry to black when finished and looked and played just as good as it did!
it always amazes me what people will pay for basically junk.
One man's junk another man's treasure.
yeah it's fun to see people wasting their money
it's like peope buying strat from 1950's like if these guitars were some sort of perfection ! In a blindtest, almost everybody can't hear the difference with a shit 1hundred bucks Squier ! ahaha. My prefered guitar is in fact a Squier. Even Ron Thorn, the boss of Fender's custom shop its prefered guitar is a Squier. I guess Fender people and all other brands must seriously laugh selling so expensive custom guitars.
@@unruler In this case, its objectively junk.
Wow I love it
WOAH!!! grey poopa? Is that what Wayne says in the limo? I've been wondering about that since I was a kid. It doesn't exist in Aus lol.
I'd like to see this one pop up over on Big D's channel!
I would totally rock that guitar, once it was repaired.
Greg up at BCR would have this thing put back together in no time :D
I would rock that guitar, absolutely.
LAST!
Just in time !!!!
I might pay a couple hundred, if I thought the repairs were within my reach.
Usually when people are vague on eBay with guitars or in my experience buying cars, they know very well what they have and do it for reason. Not always the case, but it's extremely common. With cars, why would you take two vague blurry pictures of something covered in crap in a garage when you could bring it out in the light so people can really see the entire story? It's the mystique of it.
I wouldn't pay 2247$ for that, considering lot of work on. At least 1000 $, why not.
Don't know how a nice guitar ends up like that, because someone payed a lot of money for it when it was new. They've only increased in value since
Its hard seeing guitars in this condition, its like seeing a puppy with a missing leg.
Sooo not with it. Just cause it's a 60's Gibson doesn't mean it's good lol
I cant beleive it took me this long to figure out wyron stood for would you rock or not
It will be nice when, it is repaired. If it can be. At least 3 luthiers betted over $2k, that they know how to get more value out of it. They are rare enough, and valuable enough to preserve. That poor thing has had a rough life. She deserves better, to make beautiful music again. I would definitely rock her, yes!
Would be cool if it turned out to be one of pete townsends smashed sg’s. I remember seeing a show where he split the body and broke off the neck and tossed it to the crowd. But, highly unlikely it is.
This is what I was thinking. What area was the guitar sold in, what concerts were on in the late 60’s in that area etc. there’s a research project for someone there
It looks like a flood damaged guitar to be honest.
Wood cracks like that when it gets wet then dries out quickly
It can be fixed, it’s not that bad, it’s only got a slash in the body.
I was hoping you'd be saying it might have been a Townshend smashed guitar.
Not a chance in hell... I sell everything except for the pickups and the pots.
Hi Austin, I love your channel and am blown away by your knowledge of everything Gibson. Quick random question on what is the best way to purchase a guitar internationally? PayPal or credit card and I would be purchasing from Thomann in Germany? Curious if anyone has any experience buying from them and Thanks to anyone that might.
The Pete Townsend comments make me think it actually might be a known players lost\stolen guitar traced by serial#.
