    instead of using connecting blocks. . small Anderson male female. quick release plugs would.look cleanerer and easy to disconnect if any problems.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  7 лет назад +2

      +living with cctv yeah that would certainly be neater but if you need to keep adding wires as you build up the system the terminal blocks are pretty flexible... now it's almost complete I guess I could go that way. I'll see how they hold up over time!

      Getting plugs for the kelly controller is a nightmare and I'm sure for most controller and motor combos its only £4 for the plug but over £80 "to post from Europe!! and those connectors aren't necessarily the best especially when your changing and adding parts the blocks he's using are absolutely fine

    I'm not sure, but I think you were measuring your current draw directly from the battery pack at 80V. High beam drew a current of about 1.7A, so that'd be 136W. If you're running a 12V light system that'd be 11.3A on your output side of the DC/DC converter (which is where it is rated for at 10A). You might be pushing your converter a bit at that current draw, especially if you're going to leave the main beams on for quite some time. Unless you were measuring 1.7amps at your 12V output, then just ignore my message (although 20W seems pretty low for high beam, unless you're running highly efficient leds). Good luck with the build!

    You should put a multi meter on each end of each wire, to check for continuity, before de-soldering them.
    Hmmmm, so blacks ground, then the other 2 are running lights and then brake light. The brake light wire is just a bit more voltage grab.
    Neither worked eh??? hmmm.

    Those block connectors go rusty after a while and then become faulty
    Your better off using crimping connections
    I would use motorbike brake levers or convert the brake levers you have as some motorbikes have like a clear bowl for the fluid

    It's only a matter of time before the Government designate e-bikes as a sub type of the conventional pedal assisted moped and introduce mandatory registration, insurance, tax, test and licence regulations to curb their use by lunatic kids in the urban environment. The motor wattages now available are out of control as we have seen on here, and the fact that the power comes from a battery rather than a combustion engine doesn't make much difference when a collision occurs and some t-shirt and shorts wearing teen shoots along the tarmac in front of a truck. The lithium packs are potentially explosive and unqualified owners modifying their cycles should be a matter of concern to us all. Love your vid, keep it up.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment, the biggest issues are the hurdles you have to go through to register any motor vehicle in the UK. If they just made 1000W ebikes legal and allowed them to be insured then all this would go away. The regulations need to catch up with the technology.

    • @serginhovault007
      @serginhovault007 3 года назад

      Years ago lithium packs were explosive. Time is going, people learning and more and more ebike riders prefer to make their battery packs from using non-explosive lithium cells such as LiFePO4 cells. Modern packs come with smart BMS which allow you to see if there are any problems with your pack, etc. So, any explosive packs have gone many years ago, unless kids making battery pack from recycled laptop cells, etc.

    You're freaking awesome Andy, I'm going through this trying to get my custom Rat Rod E-bike street legal here in California, you would be surprised how similar it is. I'm not sure if any of your parts have to be DOT approved? Your videos have helped me move forward and make it happen, I'm almost their just need to finish up wiring which is boring. I might put a coffee-flavored donut launcher on the back and front to distract the cops, I think for yours you will need a Tea Flavored Biscuit launcher! 😂
    Quick question, the one thing I haven't figured out and I been dragging it out, is where do I get a small switch that can handle 96V max so I can turn my DC to DC converter of and on? Or do any advice on how you have yours connected?
    Thanks, Andy, My boys and I all love all your content here in NorCal USA

    They are hard to get, because they are OEM only. Please let me know if you want them.

  • @jdudb
    @jdudb 7 лет назад

    Putting sensors on hydraulic brakes turned out to be no big deal after hours of thinking about it. I didn't even have to remove the brake levers to install the sensors. A small neodymium magnet was buried in the end of the lever near the hinge and the sensors where attached with epoxy putty mixed with some black resin colour and you would not know they were not supplied like that.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  7 лет назад

      +jdudb yeah it's all doable and I would have went this route but unfortunately as I understand it you still need brake fluid indicators on the levers otherwise it won't pass the MSVA. The TEKTRO brakes have both sensors and level indicators and non braided hoses which is also a requirement!

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  7 лет назад

      +Craig Davies the only thing it says about mud guards is that the front guard should have a curvature of at least 2mm at the outside edge. I will be taking both off for the test just to make sure, there's no requirement that I can see.
      The way I'm reading it is that if it's a bike with pedals then complying with the external projections requirements is optional.

    • @craigdavies614
      @craigdavies614 7 лет назад

      andy kirby yea,I think after the MSVA there is no need for mirrors and stand for the MOT.Any insurance quotes yet ? I enquired with Adrian flux about a 50cc motorized bicycle £180 on the vin number,dropping to £80 after registration. As far as I'm aware you need insurance to apply for registration, chemical putty can be used to make the balls for the brake levers.

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  7 лет назад

      +Craig Davies yeah I think your right about the mirrors. That's interesting about Adrian Flux, that was my next step so I will give them a call, thanks for the heads up. I've just paid for my MSVA test now, all I need to do is book the date for the test. Still waiting for a custom stand bracket and horn. Do you know the form for registration after you pas the MSVA. Is it V55/4 ?

    • @andykirby

      +th3d3wd3r Hi, the LEDs are not in series, they are in parallel.

    • @th3d3wd3r
      @th3d3wd3r 7 лет назад

      That rear cluster will probably be a few LEDs in series (internally), which would make them fussy on voltage. But I'm sure you've tested it at a higher voltage already ;)

    love your videos Andy great work as always but whyyyyy!! man leave it a bike haha they have electric motorcycle just get one if you want to be road legal. the Point of ebikes is to be free of the government and to get exercise the best thing about these bikes is you can ride them were ever. 2 each his own

    • @andykirby

      +Ted Burns it's true Ted! But I'm getting bored of looking over my shoulder and sticking to 15-20 mph in order to stay under the radar. There are some electric motorcycles out there but they would require a full bike license which I don't have and can't be bothered with right now. If I want to go off road I just take the plate off! Simples!

  • @mutantmongol
    @mutantmongol 7 лет назад

    what do you think the full build cost will be? . I'm thinking about a Harley but 10k a little steep, but a fast silent ebike could also be the answer esp if under 5 . . I got a full bike licence so I could in theory do something similar to a stealth b52 bomber. or would u recommend something else?

    • @andykirby
      @andykirby  7 лет назад

      +living with cctv I think you could defo do it for under 5k maybe look at vector ebikes as you can get a fully built one, then you'd only have to do the road legal bits after.

      Not sure 100% Andy's purpose for rear lights but I've got ebike (not as posh as Andy's) and done my strong motorcycle front light and working on strong motorcycle rear lights for SAFETY ON THE ROAD. My safety and others obviously. Many drivers (car drivers, track, lory, etc.) blame normal cyclists and electric cyclists that they don't have proper lights. Normal bicycle lights or even ebike lights just good to put in the bin. That's why people like Andy and many other adapting motorcycle lights for ebike, for safety.

    16:14 i dont think that rear light will work off a 9v battery ,not enough current , surely you got a car battery charger you could test it on or a car/motorbike battery ??
    i tried to test a car stereo off a car battery charger once and it wouldnt power on ....was gonna bin it then i tested it on my car battery and it worked, battery charger didnt have enough amps ? to power it on ?

    • @markhowards420
      @markhowards420 6 лет назад

      Martin Parker some chargers need to detect that they're connected to a battery before they put out a charge voltage. You can usually jump start one by having a battery to set it going then leave the device connected but remove the battery.

I'm OK with electric but what about the person that wants to learn to do it he would have a clue because your not doing step by step all your doing is showing what you have done then checking current. I done mine ages ago. I didn't ues drop Dow. Bought battery 5hr working 12v eon flashing unit light from a wagon that light up at side. Motor bike brake light and indercater warning light.
