This is one of those matches that anyone wanting to be or just starting out in Wrestling Should study & restudy & restudy. Building tension getting the crowd to follow along react to what's going on. getting heat involving the ref at the right spots & keeping the crowd in the story. Good solid wrestling & great to watch. Thank you for posting this!!
I agree . Graham acquits himself well here and Dory is one of the last old school legends at that time . I have come to appreciate this kind of action much more than the brawli g style you would see everywhere else . Mike is 5'7" at best and Dory looks like a far older man than he was so I was not interested in these two back then . It was the Schwartzenegger and Stallone action era . I wanted high energy but with steroid bodies , like the RoadWarriors or Nikita Koloff . Now I look back and realize they looked interesting but their matches were mostly power moves after power move with no rhyme or reason . It was Roadhouse action . I fell for it . But now as an older guy , disgusted with wrestling as of 20 years ago , I am rediscovering chain wrestling and ring psychology . I love it . Its superior to the less nuanced smash and clothesline festivals popularized in the eighties and still happeni f now .
Were you from the Chicago viewing area, because it was the same for me...UHF channel 47, and wwf on WGN channel 9...I would "tape" the shows on our Beta player, lol, so I could watch them throughout the week...when my parents were gone! lol
You know Mike never drew a dime so I was never curious to see him wrestle but he is wrestling a legend and doing well , very well . If he had been 6 inches taller his career might have been better remembered .
I am guilty of not having shown both of these gu s their due respect during their time . I was a teen , I wanted action movie type matches with muscled up bodies like lots of fans . As a mature fan though , I cannot get enough of this old rivalry . I knew Dory was respected but I thought Mike was to small and only pushed for his father . I thought Dory was boring and looked to old and unremarkable . Mike was too short . I jipped myself though be ause these matches were wrestling classics .
Dory had a solid wrestlers build . No body fat , no unneeded muscular bulk and ropey tendons , plus his cardio was on another level . But you are right , he looks like a sad old man despite only being in his early 40s here . To an untrained eye he looks like a wood shop teacher . Increasingly the people buying the tickets had unntrained eyes .

I wonder if this kind of chess match type wrestling is not the wave of the future ? Especialy of regional promotions start up again
This year I have really began to appreciate Dory Funk Jr . His style is so realistic . And relentless .
I love technical matches like these . Its like Kabuki Theatre for Lumberjacks and Cowboys .
omg i watched this on tv back in 81 uhf channel 47 was the only place i could get it....wwf was on channel 9

I saw them wrestler each other at Miami Beach C.C. and it was a draw there too.
Mike Graham never drew a dime
If that's the case I don't believe Dory would have ever wrestled him. The Grahams and Funks had a great feud.
But he could wrestle .
a great match betweeb=n two of the best ever
oooooo mike graham with the indian death lock
Dory Funks look wouldn't draw a dime today.
After 1976 he hard a hard time main eventing . The nature of the business was moving toward his brother Terry's more cinematic style .
