Hey guys, in the 90s my parents decided to get into emu farming here in Australia. We started of with 16 adult birds, 8 pairs. They all went in a 5 acre paddock. We had large round bales of hay, 2 at each spot, with the edge of 2 bales touching to give a triangle area, windbreak to lay eggs. We collect eggs everyday and incubated. We ended up with 100 birds after 2 years.

I agree why watch the video & then pop a stinky comment, those people are probably failing in their own lives & its coming from jealousy that someone's out there doing their best & learning as they are doing something for the first time & being transparent as to it worked or not & then think out of the box as how they can make it better & succeed next time. These stupid commenters probably have never done anything on this scale at all. Their parents never taught them any manners or they never heard of the saying, if you don't have anything good to say keep your mouth shut.

I strongly suspect the 2 eggs that had a small bit of blood and a little mass in them were fertile, but like you said the cold may have gotten them before they could develop further. Maybe thats why Peekaboo was breaking them earlier, trying to reclaim nutrients since she knew they died? Just based on how the other 2 eggs, one being rotten and the other pure yellow yolk. If that was the case then high hopes on the eggs Bert is trying to incubate and the others you picked up outside are fertile! Also cross fingers for switching the males.

The eggs not being viable may be why the emus were ignoring them before and starting to break them. Sometimes animals just know if something's wrong and decide not to invest time in it. So sorry, and best of luck on the next batch. It's definitely encouraging that they're being cared for.

You'll work it out with the Emu's now you know they are breeding. Happy Birthday!! There will be fertile eggs eventually. With a simultaneous polyandrous mating system it is the female that sets up territory and attracts many males to incubate her eggs. If the females are able to lay eggs in a separate shelter for each male, an area that could be closed off from all others, there may be more success with letting the males incubate. I'd imagine that the area doesn't have to be too large because the male will not venture far. Wait, I think I am living vicariously through you guys, lol. Can you tell I've raised my far share of birds. Good luck you guys.

I think it's possible since she's still laying and bert has been sitting for a while so if they're fertalized some are probably bamboo's? Hopefully some of the bert sat eggs hatch.

Well, they are all inexperienced. I too believe that next time will be better. Life throws many curves in families lives. One project at a time, that's all you can do. Jake you and Rebecca are very hard worker's and devoted parents. Ignore any negatives you get. God Bless!

Good luck on y’all’s next back of emu eggs!
We tried incubating chicken eggs but they failed too. BUT, our jersey giant went broody and we may have some chicks in a couple of days!
Maybe Bert will be able to hatch some of his eggs!
