Hi! Thanks for being here with us, and thanks for being part of that critical third arm. Good Store: good.store/ The Project for Awesome Matching Fund: www.projectforawesome.com/matching -John
John, I only recently found your channel about 6 months ago from a recommendation of another content creator (I apologize, I don’t remember which one anymore, my brain doesn’t work like it used to 😞). The work you have done is fantastic, and I love your content! This report makes me want to delve deeper into your advocacy side of the Nerdfighters. I can’t contribute monetarily as I’m currently unemployed (it’s difficult finding a job as a 58 yo female with a chronic health condition and a slight mobility issue), but I can type out emails, make phone calls, and send letters if it helps make an issue known. John, you and Hank are an inspiration, and are helping to save my sanity (and a few of my brain cells… have you _seen_ the crap that’s out there? Yikes!). Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do in the future. ❤❤❤
I have been waiting for years for you and Hank to realize that Nerdfightaria is an army. We are Nerds who Fight, that's the whole point. We are an army and you and Hank need to start using us like one. It's what we signed up for.
"The Foundation to Decrease World Suck" being the name of the Nerdfighter charity is such a great reminder of how far we have come as a community. I doubt it would get named that now, but when it was created more than a decade ago, it was a fantastic testament to how much of a long-shot the whole thing was, and how ridiculous it felt that our community would put a dent in world suck. 14 years later, it no longer feels ridiculous, and I am constantly blown away by the awesomeness of Nerdfighteria.
Something that I don't think many young nerdy kids realised as they were growing up, is just how valuable they were and are. We have world shortages of STEM professionals, which puts anyone trained in this field in an incredibly strong position - because, no matter what companies in this sector may try and say, they can not afford to suddenly lose half their workforce. That gives these professionals real power to change things for the better - and when those people are organised and informed through something like Nerdfighteria, it makes those original aims of The Foundation to Decrease World Suck not only plausible, but also achievable and within reach. That is such a phenomenal achievement and everyone who has been part of this movement should be so immensely proud. In times where the world feels like it's going down the pan, the Nerdfighteria really are rising up to "fight the good fight" and restore both fairness and hope. I never thought it would happen, but I am LOVING that I get to witness it!! 🤩💕👍
Yes, and that coupled with the AWESOMENESS that was the J&J and Danaher 'fight', make this hands down the best Community on the internet! {Flashes NerdFighter sign}
The name, for a plucky little charity, was really great from the start, and it may _seem_ weird to some now, but I think the name actually has great potential going forward. It declares it's goal right in the name, and it isn't boxed in to one specific type of world suck decreasing. If it had started with the "online creators fund" or "help some specific goal", it wouldn't work quite as well for the diverse set of things it now holds (and can hold in the future). Well done, nerdfighteria!
I'm always so proud of nerdfighteria as they grow into better jobs and adult money! Please budget responsibly, but also congratulations to everyone who is in that place this year!
OK, but can we find some excuse to call the advocacy arm "Fishing Boat Proceeds"? Some extremely unnecessarily complicated acronym, or something that means advocacy but sounds like "fishing boat proceeds"?
I think it’s incredibly funny to me that when you mentioned Nerdfighteria getting a lot of attention last year I immediately leapt to “Oh yeah we successfully convinced several companies to make more affordable Tuberculosis testing” and not cancer 😂
The Danaher thing, being able to participate in activism that wasn't just giving money, was one of the best part of 2023 for me (amid a terrible year). I hope we do more things like that.
The only Annual Report that I actually get excited for. Usually I’m the one designing Annual Reports, so they bring me great stress… but this one has the opposite effect! Happy Tuesday, John! Also very glad the Bank of Nerdfighteria is being referred to as The Third Arm… and not The Third Leg. 😂
John, a major focus of my master's thesis was on the relationship between philanthropy and "non-tangible" supports like collective organizing and advocacy (which I would argue are VERY tangible!) Today, I lost my grant writing job and I am grateful to be reminded that I have value outside my ability to work or financially contribute to things. My voice matters. Our voices matter.
I thought being a teen/young adult nerdfighter was cool, but being an adult with a stable income nerdfighter has been so much better. Love being a part of all of this.
The "Barely Contained Rage" videos were shared on my part to a variety of places outside of Nerdfighteria. My local Congrassman, as well as the local Libertarian Party. Each made significant awareness and spoke out collectively against the extended patent in the USA.
@@greedyProphet I don't think anyone here has a problem with talking about it, the one and only big bad thing here is cancer. So no, neither Green brother got cancelled or anything. Honestly, that'd be one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse

Yes! And this is such a CONCRETE example that positive change is 1000% POSSIBLE if we team up to work together towards a shared goal. I do politics-related volunteering and struggle in my recruitment efforts, especially in my past attempts to get personal friends involved, because no one believes this is possible. Everyone’s given up before a real effort has even been considered, let alone attempted. But I sense the tides are changing in the general population and I’m optimistic on how things will turn out, especially with concrete examples like these to share and use to create momentum.
I feel Nerdfighteria sort of jumped in at critical moments. The Movement to get J&J to abandon their patents was years in the making. All that was needed was a final push, which came from Nerdfighteria. Thank you John for your attention and advocacy.
That "wow" at the end made me start crying. It's just incomprehensible how many lives will be touched. Just the ripple effect of a single person getting timely, accurate testing and appropriate, affordable care? That's massive. To think how many others have been helped... Ok now I am sobbing. There's so far to go and yet we have gone further than we could have imagined.
Can’t wait to send in information for nerdfighteria twitters money raised for the matching fund!! We have over $1,600 collected from a lot of wonderful nerdfighteria members!!
There's a quote that's attributed to Margaret Mead that I'm quite fond of (I'm about to misquote it, I'm sure, but I bet I'm not far off): Never doubt that a small group of dedicated people can change the world. Indeed, that's the only thing that ever has. I am so proud of Nerdfighteria for all these great things and all the great things we're going to do in the future. And thanks to Hank and John for pointing us in good directions. I've been working professionally in the world of homelessness in the US for well over a decade and I've also learned that advocacy is at least as important as money.
Behold the power of a Nerdfighter's third arm! Truly a great year for decreasing world suck, here's to another one (ya know, without Hank getting cancer). P.S. a three armed nerdfighter with one exceptionally beefy arm needs to be a Pizzamas shirt this year.
The amount of actual progress on the global stage that has been made by this group constantly amazes me. You also embody a motto without speaking it that I have had to say to myself a few times when I felt like "my" contribution to a thing wasn't acknowledged "If you are doing this for the attention, you are doing it for the wrong reasons." You constantly put the community in the spotlight and give credit to everyone else. Thank you for leading by example. We can all use a positive reminder about doing good, and that doing good just for the sake of doing it is amazing. Can't wait for the F4A this year.
The people that needed your support know about you broadly though. And I feel like that's all that really should matter. Easier said than done sometimes, but easier to work toward than trying to make an irrevocably social human try not to consider the social impacts of their kindness.
Long time Nerdfighter, first time commenting! Congratulations on all your success, Nerdfighteria! It makes my heart glad to know that I belong to a community that is a force for good in the world. Makes my Awesome Coffee taste even better!!!
I've seen many comments in the past few years that have thanked everyone who donated, because the commenter didn't have the disposable income to donate. But I, for one, want to thank every single nerdfighter who gave their time and attention to advocacy and meme-making on Twitter. Right now, the only way I can contribute to the Bank of Nerdfighteria is financially, and I'm so grateful for all of you who did this community so proud and repped it so well. This is truly a unique group of humans ❤ DFTBA
I f*&%ing love what we build together as a community. Mark your calendars nerds! P4A is in one month!! Now is a great time to pick a charity and plan a video, warm up your meme making muscles, set a budget (attention or $$, both are good--we love a responsible financial choice), and get excited! I will see you all in the chat! DFTBA!
my financial means to contribute (to any project, not just ones related to or endorsed by nerdfighteria) is currently very limited, but i'm proud to be a part of the advocacy effort. it's encouraging to see advocacy come to fruition, and gives me hope that i can make a difference in my local community for other things i care about. here's to being human!
Decentralized *POWER* over stuff like that Tuberculosis Test thing really has me intrigued. That combined with the investment in full on *infrastructure* instead of only temporary aid etc really has me a bit hopeful for the future for once! Keep up the AMAZING work!
I can't wait for Awesome Tea to drop. I didn't really need more socks than I had, and I don't drink coffee. But I love drinking tea. Can't wait! By the way, Hank is correct that non-bagged tea is superior
I'm really happy that I found this community. Thank you everyone who participated in any of the charities and/or activism, your input is amazing, no matter how small you think it is.
Something I really appreciate about y’all is that when you encourage us to stand up to companies doing immoral things, you update us and remind us not to harass or be hateful to the companies. You let us know when our efforts have been effective
This sincerely made my entire month ❤ thank you John, Hank, and Nerdfighteria for fostering a community I’m proud to be apart of! Here’s to more positive and meaningful change and advocacy in 2024 🎉
Last year I sort of happily bought a random calendar during P4A, sort of half knowing what was happening. But after a year of following everything (and starting on Awesome Socks) I now know all the details and I'm really happy to be a part of this.
My favourite thing about the P4A is the phone call from the bank asking what the "foundation to decrease world" is and whether they should honour the payment 😂 Great work as always Thanks for the update
This brought tears to my eyes. I am so proud and so very honored to be a part of such a beautiful community. Here's to 2024 and how far we've yet to go.
I love being part of this community. I remember back with the Danaher stuff, I really felt like I was a part of something that could actually change something in this messy world for the better. I've never really had much if any money to spare, so I'm over the moon that the time I spent brainstorming on discord servers with the rest of you all was able to do so much. DFTBA ❤
It keeps surprising me how much good this community has brought to the world. It's quite literally impossible for me to wrap my head around. that is not to diminish the aid and help of all the other people outside this community of course! for instance with the tuberculosis patent most of the work was already done. all we did is give the ball a kick. but it was a damn good kick dang it! I've said it before and will probably say it again in the future. but you two brothers combined with this amazing community have been an absolute force for good in this world. I'm happy you are here
I don't have a lot of money - very little discretionary income, but knowing that I can (and hopefully have, though in the most miniscule way) do something good for the world is a nice thought. I wish I could buy the coffee and maybe the socks, but even if I can't, I can use my words to make a tiny improvement in the world, and in that way, contribute to nerdfighteria. Thank you John. You, Hank and all of the incredible people you work with are making such a difference.
I can't tell you how much it means to me that you include the advocacy arm in your Bank of Nerdfighteria updates now. I've been a Nerdfighter for quite a long time and over half of that time I lived in poverty. (Crushed by graduating college in 2008 and subsequent bouts of unemployment) I also grew up in poverty so money has always been something that would separate me from communities I wanted to be a part of. This explicit callout of the value of member's energy and attention made me feel so included even though I've been able to participate financially in Nerdfighteria now for a while. There is something about the explicit appreciation and inclusion of the poor that will always make me feel safer in a place as well. I'm in a discord with an odd assortment of friends and folks will often post videos. I try not to post too many from vlogbrothers so as to not annoy them with my exuberant nerdfighter-ness but I posted Hanks last video and noted there that I've really appreciated how both of you have increased your verbal appreciation for folks attention and how that makes the community more inclusive and now I'm gonna have to post this one as well because it is just so good. Thank you for yet another reason I'm proud to be a Nerdfighter.
It is so, so important that you've brought attention to the fact that advocacy alone has saved 32 million dollars. It's really important that people know how massive of a difference their advocacy can make and has made; and that they're motivated to continue doing it.
I like the idea of alternate universe John Green presenting the financial statement for a major company with "it appears that we might have secret third arm".
I'm having a baby in the UK this year and it makes me so glad that some of the maternal care centre is opening for other parents this year in Sierra Leone 🎉
Especially in this terrifying election year, I am so proud/happy/thankful to be part of the Nerdfighteria community, which perches in my soul and just keeps singing.
These achievements feel so unreal. I'm so glad to hear it, and even though I was already crying halfway through the video, it just kept going and going. I'm not really one to do the activism parts, so thanks to all of you who did it. I'm also happy I could do my small part by buying stuff I need anyway. Thanks Hank and John for making it possible.
I don’t know if i’m just tired but i’m crying watching this. It’s really beautiful and gives me so much hope and inspiration! Thank you for everything u do, from fighting and giving to inspiering and teaching. I love it!
Every time you two talk about this stuff I get very weepy. I can't believe you woke up one morning and decided to make the world a better place and then did it.
I can’t believe the maternal center is almost finished! The power of this community is still hard to wrap my brain around; I’m just so thankful to be a part of it! Can’t wait for the P4A!!!
A great reminder and handy bit of reference material for the deceptively simple truism that *_community matters._* It really does. Building robust, positive communities isn't just good for the people within them it's good period.
We also thank you John, for being so obsessed with TB that you saw a place to apply the lever of Nerdfighteria. That kind of expertise is so important in advocacy!
I've started following Vlogbrothers over 10 years ago when I was still in my teens. I'd like to think watching your videos have made more compassionate and socially aware. Crash Course has helped me through my CS university degree. Today I work as a software engineer, I make adult money, and I have the capability and the will to donate, and so I do, on a regular basis to PIH. Clearly I am not a special case. Both of you have raised generations of nerdfighters to be willing and able to do good and make a positive impact on the world, this cannot be understated. I'm grateful for what you and we as a community have been able to accomplish so far and I'm excited to find out what else we'll be able to in the future.
Awesome video!! I’m blown away by the power of advocacy. I think framing it in terms of monetary value will help fuel even more engagement in 2024. Go Nerdfighters go!!
I really love these yearly updates on how our community is helping to decrease world suck in very tangible ways. Thank you everyone reading this for everything you're doing and thank you Hank and John (or, as John prefers, John and Hank) for cultivating a caring community and expanding on the idea of companies for charity. You're a constant inspiration.
My whole family got awesome soap this year for Christmas. Thanks for doing my shopping for me! It was great to be a part of the TB campaigns as well, and I'll be right here for the next one! DFTBA
This is at first a disheartening reminder that so much of the power lies with giant corporations and other large entities, but then immediately an exciting and wonderful demonstration that a lot of power also lies with groups of people willing to challenge that and be a powerful entity of their own. Nerdfighteria continues to show me new ways to find some optimism and be hopeful and helpful. Pretty awesome; thanks y'all.
But seriously, what a beautiful message. Our time, our efforts and the desire to stand up for others is literally worth the most. Thank you for appreciating, and thank you for doing.
Thank you for giving us screaming and scared little humans that want to help in some way or just want some hope for this world a face, a voice and a community
This is one of those rare pieces of internet content that made me smile big not because of funny silly thing but becausr of real tangible good thing. I really appreciate that.
The Gripping Hand - that’s what the third arm is. In Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle’s book there are aliens (called Moties by the humans) who have 3 hands. Two of the hands are general, all-purpose hands a lot like ours, agile and adaptable and dexterous. But the third hand, the gripping hand - that’s the one they use when something needs a little more power.
This gives me hope, when there are so many things that are doing the opposite in the world right now. Thanks John and Hank and all the other nerdfighters!
good things!!!! i'm happy to be a part of the advocacy these days. unfortunately i haven't had steady money since 2021 and haven't been able to donate to pizzmas or p4a since then.
Donating during P4A isn't the only way to help! If you have the time you can make a P4A video about a charity you support. And you can dedicate time during P4A to watching videos and voting for ones you like so we know where the money should go!
Wow, the yearly update for the Bank of Nerdfigheria. Such mind boggling numbers. I can't wait to see what happens this year. Thank you for helping us organize and feel like a part of these really big changes.
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives - Annie Dillard (but you knew that), and the little ways a person works daily to make the world a better place really does make the world better, doesn’t it?
Goddd thinking about our work in TB makes me so weepy. So so many lives saved. And so so so many more to go. So grateful to John for introducing us to this issue.

I will see you all in the chat! DFTBA!
YEAH YEAH YEAH LET'S GO!!!
@@minimarker3 You get me. LET'S DO THIS!!!! ^^
I was just wondering if we'd see you and your fabulous stream IDs this year... Woohoo!!
So it sounds like the Nerfighteria bank is more like Green brothers. There’s two main parts and a secret third one (we love you Dave!)
+++
my financial means to contribute (to any project, not just ones related to or endorsed by nerdfighteria) is currently very limited, but i'm proud to be a part of the advocacy effort. it's encouraging to see advocacy come to fruition, and gives me hope that i can make a difference in my local community for other things i care about. here's to being human!
Me
John: "How we spent our time and our attention matters"
Decentralized *POWER* over stuff like that Tuberculosis Test thing really has me intrigued. That combined with the investment in full on *infrastructure* instead of only temporary aid etc really has me a bit hopeful for the future for once!
Keep up the AMAZING work!
I can't wait for Awesome Tea to drop. I didn't really need more socks than I had, and I don't drink coffee. But I love drinking tea. Can't wait! By the way, Hank is correct that non-bagged tea is superior
I am also v. excited for Awesome Tea.
Wait, what?! We're getting tea?!!!!
@@geeksdo1tbetter They're working on Awesome Tea, yes. No timeline for release yet, but it's coming!
"much like Snooki, the bank of Nerdfighteria may possibly have a secret third hand"
(2010 vlogbrothers reference haha)
I'm really happy that I found this community. Thank you everyone who participated in any of the charities and/or activism, your input is amazing, no matter how small you think it is.
It's really good you're here with us. DFTBA!
Wholesomeness overload
Something I really appreciate about y’all is that when you encourage us to stand up to companies doing immoral things, you update us and remind us not to harass or be hateful to the companies. You let us know when our efforts have been effective
You can really tell how much the advocacy means to John. That last sentence ☺️ wow
Time is the ultimate currency and spending it wisely can do so much. Love this new advocacy arm.
well said!
I've done a fair amount in my life and am a fairly involved guy, but this community is hands down the organization I'm proudest to be associated with.
Same. -John
Yay! We're so glad you'll be joining us again this year! It's gonna be a fun, weird time. DFTBA!
@@untappedinkwell Thank you! 😊 Looking forward to it!
Thank GOODNESS the Four Minute Rule is a thing of the past… a phrase I actually never thought I’d say!
My favourite thing about the P4A is the phone call from the bank asking what the "foundation to decrease world" is and whether they should honour the payment 😂
Great work as always
Thanks for the update
I am SO proud to be a part of this community!
I bought the awesome soap viridian package that you made! I’m loving it so much

A suit can only mean one thing!!
This brought tears to my eyes. I am so proud and so very honored to be a part of such a beautiful community. Here's to 2024 and how far we've yet to go.
+++
I honestly can't wait to see what the collective power of Nerdfighteria can do this year and beyond!
Same!
DFTBA ❤
The happiness of so many people who literally invested in a better future is so beautiful
I'm happy you are here
These insider videos, make me bust with pride to count myself as a NerdFighter for the last 17 years!
Thank you John and Hank for being so AWESOME!
Thank you for being here and contributing to nerdfighteria and our projects! It's good to have you here.
I can't tell you how much it means to me that you include the advocacy arm in your Bank of Nerdfighteria updates now.
I've been a Nerdfighter for quite a long time and over half of that time I lived in poverty. (Crushed by graduating college in 2008 and subsequent bouts of unemployment)
I also grew up in poverty so money has always been something that would separate me from communities I wanted to be a part of.

We are so, so glad to have you as part of our community. Thank you for being here with us. DFTBA!
happy tears over my coffee today (,: so proud and grateful to be a part of this
It is so, so important that you've brought attention to the fact that advocacy alone has saved 32 million dollars. It's really important that people know how massive of a difference their advocacy can make and has made; and that they're motivated to continue doing it.
4:24 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I am so proud of the Green brothers and this community. 1000% thank you to everyone involved at all levels! Let's keep this ball rolling!
Been watching along for almost 15 years when I was about 15 years myself, the good that y’all have done in the world is amazing
Appreciate the update on all THREE arms and the cumulative impact you steer.
I like the idea of alternate universe John Green presenting the financial statement for a major company with "it appears that we might have secret third arm".
I'm having a baby in the UK this year and it makes me so glad that some of the maternal care centre is opening for other parents this year in Sierra Leone 🎉
Congratulations and very best wishes!
I love it!
This isn’t the only bank report that’s made me cry but it might be the only one where the tears are happy tears.
Every time you two talk about this stuff I get very weepy. I can't believe you woke up one morning and decided to make the world a better place and then did it.
I LOVE how passionate you are about giving away money. Should we all be just that committed to the betterment of humanity.
God bless the Nerdfighters.
I can’t believe the maternal center is almost finished! The power of this community is still hard to wrap my brain around; I’m just so thankful to be a part of it! Can’t wait for the P4A!!!
It's gonna be a great P4A!
Thank y'all for building this community, sharing your passions, and inviting us along for the ride. ❤
Great job John, Hank, Nerdfighteria and anyone who donated and helped!
thank you for making it easier to use a donor advised fund to contribute to the matching fund!
My goodness, INCREDIBLE. Thanks for showing us what is possible. 👏👏👏
Happy to be a part of this great group of nerds.
I look forward to the Project for Awesome every year and this year is no different! 🎉
same!!
I love the work y’all do! It’s really inspiring, and it makes me want to find more things I can do to make the world a better place
The world (and I) needs this little hit of good news at the moment, so much love for this community!
Making my first P4A video this year and I’m so pumped!
Hooray!! I'm looking forward to it. Good luck!
This gives me hope, when there are so many things that are doing the opposite in the world right now. Thanks John and Hank and all the other nerdfighters!
I love being a Nerdfighter. Thank you for the banking report!
good things!!!! i'm happy to be a part of the advocacy these days. unfortunately i haven't had steady money since 2021 and haven't been able to donate to pizzmas or p4a since then.
Donating during P4A isn't the only way to help! If you have the time you can make a P4A video about a charity you support. And you can dedicate time during P4A to watching videos and voting for ones you like so we know where the money should go!
this is crazy, thanks everyone for being part in this
Every day I feel more thankful that I found this community and get to be a part of the change the world needs
Wow, the yearly update for the Bank of Nerdfigheria. Such mind boggling numbers. I can't wait to see what happens this year. Thank you for helping us organize and feel like a part of these really big changes.
So proud of this community and to be a part of it!
Almost finished, I'm close to crying. I can't believe it. Thank you so much.
This is amazing and I can't wait to see that first patient walk through the doors of the maternal care center. ❤
How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives - Annie Dillard (but you knew that), and the little ways a person works daily to make the world a better place really does make the world better, doesn’t it?
John's wearing a jacket means I'm probably going to cry in the next five minutes.
Goddd thinking about our work in TB makes me so weepy. So so many lives saved. And so so so many more to go. So grateful to John for introducing us to this issue.
