So glad I found this. I watched this VHS so many times as a kid that even re-watching it now after at least 15+ plus years later I still recognize the soundtrack and the noises.
This documentary probably takes the most credit out of anything in my life for starting me down the career path I took. Thank you for all the memories. The space-age, angular look of the Genesis, augmented by the contour-matching Phase III they were delivered in, fascinated me from the moment I saw first it on tape. I vividly remember taking Dave's advice at the end of the film quite literally and started trying to find out as much about trains and railroads from that moment on. That next Christmas, I got a wooden model of #801 herself, albeit in PHIV (me being a kid at the time, I was more than a little upset it wasn't PHIII). I still have it today, although it's pretty beat-up and the number has faded. The following Memorial Day, my parents woke me up at my normal get-up time for school and told me we were going to ride an Amtrak train for the first time (we live quite a ways from any routes), and I saw my first and only Phase III Genesis in person, P42DC #31. There was a very dirty NPCU on the other end of the train, with some mail cars behind it, and I remember being flummoxed by why they put the engine in the middle of the train for the longest time until I found out it was an F40 converted to an NPCU. But I digress. That fascination with trains eventually spilled over into all things mechanical, and now here I am, more than 20 years later, with a degree in mechanical engineering working for Caterpillar. Not part of EMD at the moment, but that's the ultimate goal.
I remembered this tape out of the blue today for the first time in a very long time. I nearly wore the film out in the cassette I watched this so many times Good times man….good times….
UPDATE: Stop the train!! Dave got 20,000 views!! URGENT: The intro, railyard, and museum songs have been found! Scroll down! This was one of my favorite films as a kid, I probably watched it 200+ times. Released by KidVision in 1994 and produced by Dave Hood Entertainment (who also was the star of the film), "There Goes A Train" was part of the "There Goes A..." series, teaching kids about trains, planes, and spaceships

This video was a once a day treat for my son. It inspired a life-long love of trains. Thank you Dave Hood! Love the others in the series too, but this vid is the best!
The rusty 2-6-6-2 at 23:02 is former California Western #46. I grew up right near the California Western Railroad, and although I was born too late to see #46 in action, I often got to see its former colleague, 2-8-2 #45, and rode behind it a few times.
How do you like them apples? Yep, and even before that, it was a logging engine, Rayonier #111. I hear they're raising funds to restore it, but I'm not holding my breath
Man...I watched this so much back when I was younger I wore out the tape haha. Seriously though, this was one of the main things that got me hooked on all things train related. Watching it now, some 25 years later now that I'm actually working as a brakeman/conductor for CP is an awesome, nostalgic trip down memory lane.

And to think that the Genesis locomotives at 18:16 were Amtrak’s newest, wait until you see the Siemens Charger locomotives. A major 30 year difference when it comes to locomotive technology. Anyway, this video is the best part of my childhood and even in my mid 20s I’m still glad that I can still watch it again.
Sir! There's some maniac posing as a conductor, he's staring blank into space, he's sleeping on the job, he's spilling food and tickets everywhere, he got on-board without paying, and he's yelling out random facts about trains! Should we throw him off? Nah, we get people like that all the time. Just let him drive, It'll be fine.
My childhood has been restored!!! Been looking for this for YEARS. Used to watch all the time on VHS. Didn't remember much but the scene of the guy ordering iced tea and of the car getting stuck on the tracks have been ingrained in my memory forever.

I used to watch this almost every weekend as a kid. I just noticed that I have the tie Dave is wearing as the conductor. I think my mom got it off ebay when I was growing up :P
Fun fact about me: this was the first time I had ever seen Santa fe 3751 in excursion service in the 90s, and the first time I had seen one of the scraped 1800 class 2-6-2 prairies from the Santa fe
You are a damn legend, man... I love this video, but never in a *MILLION YEARS* did I ever expect that very person to also provide the *SOUNDTRACK* from this video, one of my favourite things about the video. IT'S SO *AWESOME!*
I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of people here. I watched this so many times as a kid, and I've been a lifelong railfan. I design locomotives and streetcars for a living now. :D
I looked for weeks, all over the internet, to find this video from my childhood. I didn't know the name, just some scenes. Once I turned it on its like yep, this is it
I remember how I use to watch this on vhs a lot of times, now I can rejoice and by rewatching this over again! Watching this once more gets me into the habit of loving trains again and who can blame myself?
From 0:40 - 1:05, 21:32 - 22:11, and 32:37. And for some reason they used a sound recording of SP No. 4449 instead of leaving the audio of the ATSF #3751 for the last shot. The same sound effect was also used at 23:53. That particular whistle sounded very out of place on these shots, and also the E unit running over the camera at 24:19 even though that one was perfectly in sync.

This video is probably one reason why I run BNSF trains on my HO-scale railroad layout! Lots of fun pre-BNSF footage of the Santa Fe railway, and Amtrak in Phase III colors (I miss seeing them regularly at South Station in Boston, especially the F40PHs...) Regarding the Santa Fe Superfleet diesels seen in this video, here's what I know what their status is now: The Santa Fe FP45 (104) seen starting at 1:43 has been scrapped since 2005; prior to that it was sold to Wisconsin Central in early 1995, prior to the BNSF merger. That footage was actually shot in late 1989 for a Santa Fe promotional video. The Santa Fe Warbonnet Dash 8-40CW Dave shows us, number 858, was repainted near the end of the 90s in BNSF "Heritage II" colors, but years later it was sold to the CN railway, repainted and renumbered as 2193, and is still operated by CN today. The Santa Fe Dash 8-40CW at 3:15, number 914, is still owned and operated by the BNSF, and still has the Warbonnet paint scheme! But the paint is quite faded by now, and a small yellow "BNSF" was stenciled under the side road numbers. Santa Fe 907 at 8:28 (Another Dash 8-40CW, probably) is still in use by the BNSF today, but in 2004 it was repainted in the "Heritage II" paint scheme.
wileyk209zback all the current dash 8 40CW's on BNSF are in storage however the B40-8W's are still in active service in fact there's a few Santa Fe B40's in Phoenix
@@Rothnorthon1 Yep; I have a few HO-scale BNSF B40-8W locomotives for my layout, from Walthers Trainline. Two of them are "Fakebonnets", and one is in the "Heritage II" paint scheme. The two "Fakebonnets" are DCC-equipped with hardwired decoders (one of them being the first locomotive I hardwired a decoder into myself), and I plan to install one in my "Heritage II" locomotive soon.

One of us pretended to be Dave, while the other pretended to be the engineer and the woman warning Dave about the car on the track. After we did it once, we switched roles (I can't remember who pretended to be who first though). This, There Goes a Boat, Plane, Bulldozer, Truck, Fire Truck, Monster Truck, Police Car, Helicopter, Motorcycle, Race Car and Here Comes a Roller Coaster are the ones we watched as children in the 90s. We didn't know about the few others I didn't mention. The last time I watched this was somewhere in the mid 2000s. I feel young again watching this and the others I watched after such a long time.

Awesome-sounding train horn starting at 31:40! Regarding the footage of ATSF 3751 at 32:37 - 33:15, that is not its' true sound. They actually used a recording of the Southern Pacific Daylight 4449, another famous steam locomotive still in use today.

@Norfolk Southern Fan 1225 I'm a Conductor on a trolley line in Oregon, and I said that exact line to the Motorman that I was running with one day. We encountered our MOW speeder crew working out on the line. We had a working radio with us on the trolley, but the Speeder crew's radio had stopped working and was shut off. We were almost in a head-on collision with the speeder. The Motorman kept trying to fuss with the only working radio on the trolley, so I said (more like yelling) that line just like Dave did: "Forget the radio, stop the train!" The Motorman stopped the trolley just in time before a head-on collision could have happened. We were just mere feet from a head-on collision. I'm lucky to be alive to tell the tale.

30:16, Forget the radio, STOP THE TRAIN!
"Conductor Dave, What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in the back of the train." "You're radios not working." "Your right it's not working."
@Norfolk Southern Fan 1225 After Get The Car Off The Track. '''Thank You Engineer Dave, You Save The Day.''
I remember watching this video tape with my grandpa i have good memories of this tape and always will
