That's why Hooker, Dariush and Burgos really disappointed me against Barboza. Nothing to take from him, of course, he really is a dangerous guy, but he is one of those guys who can be beaten by anyone who is able to use his flaws (like Stephens, Magny, Lewis).

Because checking kicks is difficult without exposing other defensive holes, and can be pretty easy to fuck up and take huge damage. The real question is why more people don't just slip the kick, much easier and no risk of damage, plus it extends the kicker out of position for a nice counter.
Barboza will be beaten even by 50th ranked fighter in the world, if the one can stick to the blueprint for all 15/25 minutes. Barboza, Jeremy Stephens, Cowboy Cerrone, Derrick Lewis, Neil Magny... those guys are types of fighter who have an obvious flaws in their game and if you are able to capitalize it, you are gonna win. If not, you are gonna lose painfully.
I didn't watch MMA back when Gaethje and Barboza fought but I bet Barboza was the favorite and everybody thought he's gonna destroy Gaethje because Gaethje's a very stationary Brawler with no movement so it must have shocked a lot of people how sharp and technical Gaethje looked like in that fight, I've never seen someone's fighting style evolve that much that quickly.
Gaethje has always been a pressure fighter, and Edson has always struggled against pressure fighters. Gaethje just tightened up his striking and made it a bit more technical recently, rather than gunslinging in the pocket.
Gaethje is a pressure fighter, and Barboza doesn't like it + he has a genius Trevor Wittman with him, who couldn't not see the obvious flaws in Barboza's game and prepare a good game plan for Gaethje. He only had to stick to it and since he learnt it after his two consecutive loses, it was a clear victory for him.

@@e.a.poecrnimacak354 to be fair to Beneil he clearly was winning that fight until he got caught by that knee, now a fight makes him look bad is that Michael Johnson one, he "won" but it was kinda a robbery and Johnson is a fighter that is even easier to gameplan against than Barbosa, not being able to replicate what Reza Madadi and Jonathan Brookings (two UFC washout fighters) were able to do against Johnson is worse than that Barbosa fight at least in the manner you speak of.

Edson is my go to whenever I play against one of my friends in ufc 4. Lmao he refuses to check leg kicks so I just chop him down in the first round every time. I was actually amazed about Justin's leg kicks. I thought they looked more powerful than Edson's when they traded early in the fight.
