I'm about halfway through Stoner -- I love the writing style in its balance of character interiority, dialogue, action, and setting. Love Edward Hopper too.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark is also a docuseries -- her husband at the time, Patton Oswalt, put it together after her death. Besides the real story, you really see the love he had for her for him to continue her project and lament her legacy.

Stoner is a classic and one that all my friends mention and I hadn't read it until recently. The main character teaches at a nearby university that I have visited so that felt interesting. It was an unexpected read because while not much happens, everything that we call a life does happen, as we experience the entirety of this unassuming man's small town experience. A real gem that has stayed with me but I have difficulty describing to others what was so special about it. I also found Wave to be an engrossing read.

I’ve had Stoner in one of my TBR piles for quite some time and hope to read it soon. I love finding little remnants of people’s lives that have been left in books. It’s as though they purposely leave a piece of themselves in the book to let the next reader know they enjoyed the book. 😊

Ahh tsunamis and tidal waves are also one of my biggest irrational fears and I've also had nightmares about them my whole life (usually about being on a tiny island with nowhere to escape). Never met somebody who shares that fear in the same way before!

When you say “picked up on the side of the road” are people throwing books out their windows in New York?

People regularly leave stuff they don’t want on the curb in NYC. I haven’t gotten any hooks that way but I personally found a really good mirror on the curb a couple blocks from my apartment!

Good to see you back. Yes, Stoner is a great choice for autumn. It’s set at the University of Missouri, early to mid 20th C. I became really engaged with the story and of course it’s a Hopper painting on the cover- how did I miss that interesting tidbit of info when I had the book in front of me.
“The Red Badge of Courage” is beautifully written. It’s hard to believe that Crane had not been in a battle. His brother, who had been, inspired the story. I look forward to hearing your thoughts for each book.
Yep, I grew up one block from the Atlantic on south shore of Long Island. As a young kid I used to worry about tidal waves.

    Hi, Anna!
Really enjoying your upload as always!
As you were saying that you crave stories about middle aged couples, I couldn't help but think about Doris Lessing's „The Summer Before the Dark”. People are having different opinions about the style of Lessing's writing, but I really enjoy the melancholic atmosphere and the character development in this book! Plus I think it's perfect for the fall!
    Stay as you are!🧡

"I'll Be Gone in the Dark" by Michelle McNamara is an exciting read. Yes, she did pass away before the book was published. A couple of takeaways; despite her exhaustive research and passion, she was not even close to identifying the actual killer (his name could not be found in any of her research notes - thank goodness for DNA). Similar in nature to Robert Graysmith's attempt to identify the Zodiac killer. What I found fascinating in both cases was the desire and drive of both authors in their quests. The stories are well told and keep you turning the page. If you are looking for great true crime or crime-related books, I highly recommend "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote, "Fatal Vision" by Joe McGinnis, and "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi.

If you like reading about war, City of Thieves by David Benioff was a great book about two young men who go on an impossible mission through a time of deprivation (recommend for winter), and I enjoyed Generals Die in Bed by Charles Yale Harrison: it's a plainly told account of a young man on the front lines - brutal but short.

Washington, Luncheon in the Fall, immolation in a flying sky tube. Who doesn't want that?
Currently reading Bonding (Maggie Siebert) and re-reading (audiobook) The Book That Wouldn’t Burn (Mark Lawrence).
Finished All Fours (Miranda July) and it was great.
Japan videos were a treat. Love the content.

Michele MacNamara (sp?) who wrote Ill be Gone in the Dark, did sadly pass away. She was an amazing writer and journalist and her work did indeed lead to finding the Golden State Killer. Her own story is sad and fascinating and her husband Patton Oswald was instrumental with making sure her work was completed and recognized. Check out I’ll be Gone in the Dark, the Podcast, too. If you’re sensitive, dont read it at night!
