The white gravy in the U.S. is typically known as country gravy, sausage gravy, or sawmill gravy (the difference being what’s added…. i.e. sausage gravy is made with bits of sausage and the drippings, whereas sawmill gravy is made without the sausage bits, but still contains the drippings.)

The gravy for biscuits and gravy is basically a Béchamel sauce. After cooking the sausage you add flour to the sausage and fat to create a roux and then add milk and cook until thickened. Then it is seasoned with salt and a lot of black pepper. The basic recipe is 1 pound of ground breakfast sausage, broken up well and cooked until browned and all the fat has been rendered. Add 1/2 cup flour to the pan with the sausage and mix to create a roux. cook the roux untill the flour has just slightly turned a golden color and then stir in 4 cups of milk. Continue to to cook on medium heat until the gravy has thickened stirring often to lift the flour from the bottom and side of the pan. Add salt to taste and a generous amount of black pepper.

As far as I know there's two types of gravy served over biscuits, sausage gravy and country gravy. Sausage gravy is prepared by browning ground breakfast sausage, then without draining the fat add flour to thicken it up, then milk until the desired consistency is achieved, and season with salt and pepper. Country gravy (my favorite) is adding flour to the grease and bits left over from frying bacon to form a roux, than add milk and season as above. I prefer to add sausage to country gravy rather than make sausage gravy because sausage gravy tends to turn out a greyish color as opposed to country gravy which is a more visually palatable off white cream.

Okay, so Jolly got it slightly wrong on the tea front. ICED Tea is not the same as Sweet Tea. Iced Tea is usually something you find in the northern states and it's very lightly sweetened, if at all. Southern Sweet Tea is just that, sweet. There is varying sweetness levels depending on how your Grandma & Mama made it, but it usually requires at least 4-6 cups of sugar per pitcher of sweet tea. When you make your trip to the southern states definitely make sure you order Sweet Tea and not Iced Tea or you'll be sorely disappointed. Hope this clarification helps!

      @JustMe-dc6ks 8 месяцев назад

Was more pepper gravy than sausage I think, but close enough given the practicalities if you want to watch.
There’s also a channel for Barry Lewis, who’s a cook I guess, who made and tried a version. Made some mistakes but it seemed reasonably close considering. The main advantage of that one is he essentially recreated our breakfast sausage, he didn’t know we cook it as patties but still it’ll give you an idea of the flavor.

We have the same gravy as you guys, we just apparently have many different types. We normally have two types of "white gravy", country and sausage. Sausage grayv is basically country gravy with sausage in it. But we do have the traditionally runny brown gravy that we reserve for mashed potatoes and turkey or roasts. When you come to the US besides trying biscuits and gravy, you should try country fried chicken or steak that's topped with country gravy....it's soooooo good and I could eat it everyday if I could.

    1. We eat biscuits many ways. I prefer my biscuits with butter and jam, or with country ham. Or, occasionally, apple butter.
    2. We have many types of gravy for different foods.
    3. Biscuits and gravy is a breakfast dish in the south. We don’t eat fried chicken for breakfast. So I don’t know why they said that it’s commonly eaten together. Biscuits and gravy are more commonly served with sausage, eggs, hash browns, etc.
    4. We do other things with the biscuit dough. My great grandmother made biscuits every morning, from scratch, and she would use the left over dough and make fried peach pies.
    5. Biscuits are nothing like scones. I like scones, but it’s night and day. Biscuits are fluffy, buttery, light and airy.

You make sausage gravy by cooking ground breakfast sausage in a pan after it's cooked though like ground beef you add a couple a heaping spoonfuls of flour (you want the flour and fat to be equal but you just kind of eyeball it) you add the flour to the sausage and cook for a just a little bit until the sausage is covered and the flour is no longer raw, then you slowly add milk along with salt, and pepper until the gravy is as thick or as thin as you like. If you want to make it with our the sausage you cook the meat of choice such as bacon in the pan remove it from the pan the add a couple of spoonful of flour to the pan and cook till slightly brown. Then just fallow the same steps as with the sausage gravy.

The US has brown gravy, as well.
The white gravy is known as "sausage gravy", or "country gravy". It's a flour-based gravy. It's made with black pepper, milk, and sausage meat. Hence "sausage" in "sausage gravy". That's also why it's chunky in this video.

The "white" gravy is made with fried pork breakfast sausage (crumbled while frying) you could add some diced onions if YOU like. Remove sausage from fry pan then add white flour to the remaining fat from the sausage to make a "roux", a kind of flour paste. Next, add by preference, cream or milk appropriately 2 cups, more or less, depending on how thick you want your gravy. After "roux" is fully dissolved in liquid add cooked sausage and simmer for a minimum! of 5 minutes. There you have Sausage gravy. Pour over biscuits and enjoy. 😉 For a full on Southern breakfast add fried hashbrowns or potatoes, and fried eggs. The potatoes taste great with the gravy!! 😂

In America we have many different types of gravy . It can be a beef gravy like you are used to, but we also have chicken gravy. A red tomato gravy , white gravy can be plain white or flavored with many other foods such as sausage , eggs , mushrooms, etc.

We have more than one type of gravy here. We have the brown gravy, made with beef stock, just like what you call gravy. We also have gravy made with chicken stock that we typically use at Thanksgiving to pour over stuffing or dressing. Then we have the white gravy you seen in this video which is basically bechamel with bit of sausage and sausage drippings plus cracked black pepper. That is typically used for bisvuits at breakfast or minus the sausage bits, it is used to pour over fried chicken or country fried steak. We also have redeye gravy which is made with bacon grease or country style(salt cured)ham drippings and coffee grounds. Again, that is used on breakfast biscuits.

Whether or not the biscuit is dry or the gravy is lumpy is usually owed more to how closely the chef is paying attention than the recipe :)

By the way we usually have brown gravy, and if the biscuits aren't buttery and melty ... then they need more butter.

Funny how times change. When I was growing up in rural Louisiana in the 1950's B&G was "poor people's food". We ate lots of it for supper through the years. It was real country food - big city people living in Baton Rouge or New Orleans or Shreveport maybe ate it but they sure wouldn't admit it!

Biscuits and gravy are made with breakfast sausage. Take the breakfast sausage out of the casing, fry it till brown. Add a couple tablespoons of butter, sprinkle sausage meat with flour and cook lightly. Then add milk or cream.....add salt to taste and a load of black pepper! You have sausage gravy!

Let’s get the sausage gravy thing straightened out for good. It’s basically made like any gravy. After you fry up some bulk sausage meat (no casing), you make a gravy of if including meat and juices (as you might make gravy of roast drippings) with some flour and milk and possibly some seasoning, especially black pepper. That’s it. You an put it over biscuits or use it however you want.
By the way, many Americans including me eat biscuits as you might a scone by splitting them (YES) and applying butter and jam/jelly or honey or just butter alone. We don’t really have “clotted cream” except in stores selling Bitish products so we don’t do that usually.

Beans on toast. Beans are 'dry' or 'pasty'. So we add a sauce so they're not as dry! Then you serve sauced beans on ... dry toast, making it dry again? Well, it's coming from a country that 'conquered the world', but decided their wet island was the best place to live, so there's that! haha

I love a hot biscuit sliced open and a round sausage patty put inside to make a “sausage biscuit”, Adding a fried egg on the sausage/biscuit makes it a well rounded breakfast to send your family off for their school or work day.

Unlike Brits we have multiple types of gravy, Beef, chicken, sausage (the one in the video), mushroom, and some areas call pasta sauce a gravy. There are more, but I am just naming a few. A good buttermilk biscuit is not dry at all. Biscuits and gravy are my favorite4 breakfast item.

It’s crazy because mushroom gravy comes from France. You’d think they’d know about it being much closer than we are😂 although the French did influence a lot of southern American cuisine….
