    will you please explain why vegetables are countable and fruits are uncountable?

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  8 месяцев назад +4

      The word vegetable is countable so we can say 1 vegetable, 2 vegetables but the word fruit is usually uncountable so we have to count it as 1 piece of fruit, 2 pieces of fruit.
      Fruits is occasionally used (so it can be a countable noun) but only when it means different kinds of fruit. For example - the juice contains five different fruits (mango, orange, apple, banana and peach), but it is more commonly used as an uncountable noun so it is usually fruit with no s.
      Sorry it’s a little complicated.

    Candy- both countable and uncountable

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  Год назад +3

      Yes, you’re right. Candy can be both. I’m British so tend to think of candy/candies as mainly countable but in American English it’s very much both.

      Aren't burger and hot dog both just like cake as we can add some in front?

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  Год назад +2

      @@ajaypandita727 no, both hotdog and hamburger are countable nouns, so you can use some with them but then you need to add -s.
      For example - some hamburgers, some hotdogs. (Which means you have an unspecified number of hamburgers and hotdogs but more than one). Whereas cake is both countable and uncountable, so some cake (an amount of cake) and some cakes (2 or more cakes) have a different meaning.

      Yes it’s strange. The word vegetable is countable so we can say 1 vegetable, 2 vegetables but fruit is usually uncountable so we have to count it as 1 piece of fruit, 2 pieces of fruit.
      Fruits is occasionally used when it means different kinds of fruit. For example - the juice contains five different fruits (mango, orange, apple, banana and peach), but it is more commonly used as fruit (uncountable so no s).

    Why rice is uncountable , but lentil is countable ?

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  Год назад +3

      Very good question, and you are correct rice is uncountable but lentils are countable. There isn’t really a reason, but lentils are nearly always in the plural form with an -s on the end. Noodles are similar - they are also countable and usually in the plural form.

    Bread fruit and chocolate is countable not uncountable

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  Год назад +1

      Actually bread is uncountable - you can’t say 1 bread, 2 breads. You can count slices of bread or loaves of bread. Fruit is also uncountable you can only count pieces of fruit - 1 piece of fruit, 2 pieces of fruit. Chocolate can be both depending if you are talking about a small chocolate, (1 chocolate, 2 chocolates) or chocolate in general (some chocolate).

    Why chocolate is both why please anderestand please?

    • @GigglesEnglish
      @GigglesEnglish  11 месяцев назад

      Chocolate can be both because it can be uncountable and thought of as some chocolate (for example some pieces or squares broken off from a big chocolate bar) or countable if they are small, square or round, and individually wrapped chocolates.
      Hope that helps.
