I have had a problem with what I call “ modern fine art music” ( my Dad used to call it “ piano down the stairs music” - harsh but you get the idea....) for many years now. I feel excluded and annoyed by any art that you have to have read the book before you can appreciate it, however recently there seems to have been a growth in modern music which is much more accessible, almost as if the listener who hasn’t been to study at a conservatoire is being valued again, an example of this would be John Gomm ( his “Ain’t nobody “cover is awesome ) his work manages to be challenging AND beautiful, rather than just challenging ,and I’m delighted that you have found others who are following this path....thanks for sharing them with us👍🎸🇬🇧

Insightful, John. Like you, I like it when music that’s inherently rich and complex is also accessible. Something I find especially cool about Mark’s compositions and performances is that he doesn’t feel the need to show off what he’s capable of as a guitarist. Instead, the whole experience, the complete musical statement and effect is what guides him. That’s what makes his albums such a good soundtrack for daily life…there’s plenty of the sophisticated harmonies and rhythms to keep things interesting, but nothing to interrupt the flow with dazzling displays of virtuosity for its own sake. Of course, given the viral nature of show-off videos, Mark’s restraint is likely one reason his music has flown under the radar to-date. Cheers!

Great channel. I just discovered you today. Bruce Cockburn was doing compositions that reminds me of this in the 1970s. "Circles in the Stream" have a listen if you haven't already.
