Music video by The Jam performing Start. (C) 1980 Polydor Ltd. (UK)
40 years old and sounds as good now as then. Just incredible....
55, as it is Beatle's Taxman of 1966
@@cas3003 I think it has a better downbeat than Taxman. I see your point though.
@@jasonb.3902 Better downbeat? This is the same fucking song as Taxman, but not as melodic or inventive.
The band The Music Machine did a cover of Taxman that sounds quite similar to this
Shag song
Rick Buckler is one of the most underrated drummers Britain ever produced.
For sure. Steady beat at all times.
He came out broke
@@kieranholohan7048 I know, it's terrible.
His do disappeared like overnight. Irrelevant.
He's not underrated , I rate him, that's all that matters!!
This could have come out in 1970, 1980 or 1990 and it would still sound just as fresh and brilliant
Except it's ripped off from Taxman by The Beatles.
@@Euadam by "ripped off" you mean "improvised". Music always takes stuff from others and change it into something different (see hip hop's sampling).
This was always a floor filler (with the lads) at my local Friday night Youth Club back in the early 80s! What a tune!
the modfarther in his prime, what a amazing time to grow up in,,thanks 4 sharing xxxxx
The Jam were a super tight well oiled machine. What a perfect band!
43 years ago today, this song hit #1. Congratulations and happy anniversary.
Seems like yesterday.
Don't get great music like this anymore, it's sad.
Weller is the Midas of music.
Paul Weller’s The Jam guitar solos are insanely underrated. They sound like George Harrison in a bad mood going “here’s your f*cking guitar solo Paul”, fucking brilliant.
The guitar solo in Taxman is by Paul.
Still remember the day it came out. Great follow up to Going Underground. The Jam were untouchable in 1980.
SO TRUE!
Not up North mate - Joy Division brushed them away :)
agreed but the police had more success in 1980 and in total - world wide, even tho the jam were better
@@Spartanm333
Hmm, how many number 1 singles did Joy Division have?
The Jam were very popular up north despite what you infer!
Great lift from The Beatles 'Taxman' 1966.
i only found that out the other month when i heard "The Taxman" on the radio. i was like "hey where have i heard this before"
George Harrison described 'Start' as "the greatest Taxman cover ever.."
lol not even close
Bruce brilliant bass player ❤❤
Sometimes you forget just how good a song is. Classic
Just now seeing this comment in 2023 - priceless.
Until you realise that they ripped of Taxman by the Beatles
Oh, that bass! Foxton the coolest 😎
I think personally the only people who will truly understand Tha Jam, is those who were around at that time. A lot of people say Weller left the band as the gaffy gaffer but he is a man who was in a band and he had to move on in himself. However, nobody can replicate the Jam as a band. Take one band member away and they would never have been the same. Brilliant lyrics, music and bandness. Always in my heart and never forgotten.
They were big in my teens, but I think by 1982 he wanted to move on and do something different. At least Foxton and Buckler were man enough to know that The Jam would become a parody without him and also the mod revival was coming to an end by then, so they moved on as well. Can't say I liked The Style Council but at least Weller was keen to do something new.
Beautifully put (I was 15 when The Jam solit) fire and skill, forever in our hearts.
Yes that is so true you had to be there to appreciate how good they were and how lucky we were to be around then.
I was always more of a Style Council fan. Of course 'Our Favorite Shop' was the highlight of several years together, and 'Confessions of a Pop Group' was really out there and must have bewildered many of their fans. I read that Weller lost male fans and built up a considerable female fan base with the change in bands. When my husband and I met, he had all the Jam in his collection and now I appreciate how great and influential they were.
Blahhhh; Yeas, nicely said. They were and still are iconic!
Talent borrows, genius steals. Oscar Wilde
Paul Weller...a subtle, underestimated badass.
Woaaah.... today I was wandering on YT music and got to know there's a band called The Jam. I know nothing about music but if a bassline could tickle my ears, most definitely I'd love that song and this song did it to me. Now listening to entire Sound Affects album and it's so entertaining.
Even this video has a touch of The Beatles Rain colour video from 1966.
Do you still listen to the jam every other day like me.
Steven crainie yes mate but weirdly I’ve only just found this amazing tune
Emotionally Stable-izing Music...Paul Weller is a Wizard Wordsmith
When I get The Jam itch, this is the first classic for me. Much imitated, never replicated! Bruce is a brilliant bassist! EGAF! UK ❤ 🇬🇧
Even The Beatles copied it...err.
takes some fire and skill to make a great song out of a great song
^^^this!
A fucking immortal song repurposed and made every bit as good
Just came here from The Smiths - This Charming Man.
The Smiths and The Jam. Two bands that I will listen to forever.
I seem to recall Weller said they'd been listening to Revolver, which says a lot. But George did not sue. Given that GH was in the middle of "My sweet Lord/He's so Fine" litigation here, well, bless you George. And it's a great song
George Harrison wrote "This Song" in response after going through the litigation of My Sweet Lord"
@@rockvilleraven "could be sugar pie honey bunch? Nah, sounds more like Rescue Me! "

bruce's bass lines amazing as usual and his backing vocals are decent too
Thanks Paul McCartney (Taxman bass lines).
@@rolandgeffroy6252 Just listened to Taxman and thought same.
Nah, he's ripping off the baseline from To Be Someone Must Be A Wonderful Thing
How did he think of that bass line?
@@rolandgeffroy6252 Bruce seems to have taken that and tweaked it, and it shows its improvement!
Ahem Weller is a huge Beatles fan this song is an homage to his idols. He is quite capable of coming up with his own riffs or whatever.
Thanks for saying the obvious. To a tribute not a theft.
@@robertkraljii5048
It's not obvious to people who don't know Taxman.
Brings back memories of a girl who I met in a place called bushey in Hertfordshire not seen her for 40 years but when I hear this song I always think of her.
Killer beat and song. ❤
The coolest video of all time. The Jam in 1980 were untouchable. Their absolute peak.
Even The Police ,couldn’t touch them 😂🤣 🤙🏾
Sorry, no offence but the riff is a direct rip off of the Beatles’ Tax man’ ,some cheek. S X

Reminds me of my fave Beatles song "Tax Man."❤ both ..
One of the best by the jam
Have loved this since 80s still sounds so fresh
Everyone clocks the 'Taxman' riff, but the 'If I never ever see you' part is pure Syd Barrett....
Yes! He adds a wonderful bridge not seen in the Beatles classic
I was 14 years old when I first heard this.... I loved it so much then.....and listening to it now just takes me right back there. 🙂👍
Listen, remember and know you'll never have this again. We was just lucky

some great rock trios never last too long. the jam was one of them. 3 great muscians. beautiful arrangements and inventive playing. took their music to its conclusion in about 5 years. disbanded and became almost legendary and shurly very underrated. long live The Jam'
They weren't underated
Two more trios that were short lived were The Cream (less then four years), and the original Jimi Hendrix Experience (barely three).

Very taxman, bass and guitar.

As a 12 year old in 1980 I had no knowledge of the Taxman so to me and many others Start was just a great song.
I was 12 in 1980 too and was familiar with a whole lot of the Beatles catalog (including Taxman). 🤷
No one can compare
Paul Weller's ability to " Encapsulate His Feelings Emotionally " Is one of the reasons why this record has remained a " Perennial Favourite " !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Thanks 4 Your Support Re My Paul Weller/ " Start " Post . Take Care !! From Adrian Browne 1965
Its all about the bass !!!
I loved this song when it was released in 1980!
I also liked it when it was released in 1966 by the Beatles.
Also check out Beck New Pollution which "rips off" bass line from START...it's just music evolution and influence
greatest MOD promo ever...bless you Weller!

No, not remotely.
If you think this song shows great bass playing, it was ripped off from “Taxman” by the Beatles.
Absolutely one of the best and massively underrated.
That's quite a simple bass line to play
Certainly one of the most fanciable anyway! 🎸
One of the best mod songs ever the guitar is fantastic what a tune
Saw them in concert when I was in high school. Sometime around 1980-1981…they were amazing.
August 1980 was a good time to be alive. There were three classic number ones in a row: Abba's 'The Winner Takes it All', Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes', and then the Jam's 'Start'. And then the kids went back to school and Kelly Marie had her one-hit-wonder.
