These videos are amazing…
Does it taste like beetroot to you?
Lotte Market in Edison has them,
so does HMart.
The issue is when you buy them at the supermarkets, is that they're picked before they have had time to fully ripen. They're harvested early, so what you are tasting is a fruit that hasn't reached its full potential so you won't get its true taste.
Yes
Same with limes
This is the issue with so many commercial fruits :(
@@amorca4653 very true!
Especially honeydew melons. A lot of Americans think they are flavorless slimey rocks
You should do a cactus fruit tier list on the ones you like most
I love cactus fruits. 😰
Ngl some Orange or red opuncia with whipped cream Is fire🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@batacumba Yeah they are refreshing and floral.
Best ones i have had were always from a buddies Grandma's backyard.
@@iamunknowable it’s true, the ones from someone’s back yard are always the best.
@@batacumba wonder if its because they only kept the best tasting plants or if it was the care they got.
You have to eat dragon fruit immediately after picking of the plant because the flavor deteriorates very quickly. That is a big reason dragon fruit is still not sold at many grocery stores.
A tip it to refrigerate them, and hey will last a few weeks.
Pretty sure I found you searching about golden dragon fruits and then binged most of your videos. Cool little throwback
Yellow dragon fruit are still by far my favorite fruit that I've been able to try.
Another great video. All dragonfruit taste better when ripened on the vine.
Most at markets are picked unripened and then they are ripened during transit
@weirdexplorer You should try putting passion fruit on the yellow/print/white dragon fruit! We cut it in half like you do, take a scoop out to make room and then add the passion fruit and it’s an amazing combo - even if the passion fruit is very sour. The seeds also don’t clash. We call it a passion dragon here in LA haha. would love to hear your thoughts!
sounds great!
Kiwi has a very complex flavor that makes it very interesting. Dragon fruit are much simpler, but they're still undergoing a lot of development and have many interesting looking cultivars, so I would grow some if I could
Also like Kiwis, dragon fruit do best when cross pollenated.
Gold and red kiwi are delicious
I'm so glad this is finally being addressed. Something that looks like the Israeli yellow dragonfruit occasionally shows up in Australia, and they're fantastic and very flavourful I love them. The variety that's more common to you, I've never been able to get ahold of. White dragonfruits can have flavour if you get very good ones that were properly ripened, but I've only come across that in Thailand or frozen
I collaborate with a few farmers in Australia. Find them and get some magenta fleshed fruit. Dawn Supreme, Purple Dawn, Jade Red are a few cultivars that were created in Australia
The smaller kind of dragonfruit you had is VERY common in Colombia, especially as a remedy for digestive issues. It's the other kind of dragonfruit that we don't really get.
Yes, we have the smaller yellow fruit and we call it “Yellow Colombiana” it’s like Palora but smaller.
I'm mildly allergic to dragonfruit but I definitely pop a benadryl and eat them from time to time
You wild lmao 😭😂
Lol! That's me and pineapple.
But pineapple juice is so good at clearing mucous during a cold, I find it necessary. I get sinus infections easy, and anything to prevent them helps!
Not sure if dragon fruit has any healing effects, but I certainly can understand the desire to consume against your body's wishes. Knew someone allergic to mint, and struggled to use tooth paste. Didn't stop her from enjoying mojitos. And she always had benadryl on hand XD.
Seriously, though....mint is in everything. Even toilet cleaner comes in mint!
Ha pop 8-10 and have a good time after you fight off the sleepiness 😅
When I buy them at supermarkets in Sweden they're rarely sweet and pretty bland. But they can get extremely tasty if you get them somewhere like Thailand
goes for all of the tropical fruits. I was blown away by trying dragon fruit on vacation there. Of course still nothing compared to the yellow mangoes or sapodilla and such but still delicious compared to our boring supermarket ones.
I hope you can try Desert King from Israel or a California magenta fleshed fruit. They are not bland and can brix in the mid 20’s
@@RAREDRAGONFRUIT: Holy shit, that's sweet! For reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekopon#Cultivation
I've been enthralled by you videos for years now. I'm allergic to mangoes but often tried as many fruits featured in your videos when I lived in south Florida. Thanks for the entertainment!
Nice! The Yellow Megalanthus is called Ecuador Palora because it comes from the region. You need to try American Beauty, Kesslau, Paul’s La Verne Pink, and more! Dude, I’ll send you some to try if you want.
count me in!
There is a Brazilian farmer that specializes in dragon fruits. He has like 30 varieties. He showed one its called i think chameleon that combines both colors purple and white in its flesh
@@WeirdExplorer Just got off the phone with my favorite organic farm, they will donate some fruit for you to try too! Just be aware some of the red fleshed varieties will turn your 💩 red 🐉❤️😂
@@CarlosAlejandro.-ke6gr Yes, that bicolor one comes from Puerto Rico. We grow over 300 varieties but many are similar, sister seedlings, or were renamed.
@@RAREDRAGONFRUIT Ah yes. Fun story: I'm a sideshow performer and swallow swords in my show. I had a moment of complete horror one day before I put two and #2 (heh) together.
Yellow Dragonfruit is so damn good. It's one of the best newly available fruits.
Try a magenta fleshed fruit
@Thegingerbreadm4n Bummer, sorry to hear that.
Most of the white ones I've had were pretty bland, but I let one sit on the kitchen counter to ripen longer. I waited until it looked like it might be getting a bad spot, before I cut it. The blemish didn't reach the interior, it was all on the rind. Anyway, it tasted a lot better. A lot sweeter, and it had some other flavors, closer to the yellow ones. From now on, they can hang around the kitchen awhile. I love the yellow ones. I don't buy either of them often, because they're too expensive.
Here in Brazil they have gotten cheaper fast, couple days ago i bought a purple flesh one for less than 2 Us dollars (Large one) it was VERY Sweet. It kinda surprised me. It was sweet like a very good summer cantaloupe melon (maybe an 8 sweetness?) previous ones that I've tried barely reached 6 like in your video
It will be even cheaper as it is becoming more and more popular and many farmers here are starting growing them.
Would love to try these. Every time I’ve tried a white dragonfruit I have to admit to a bit of disappointment lol. It’s like even though I know what they taste like my mind has still tried to attribute more flavour to them from their beautiful appearance lol.
Try some California magenta fleshed fruit. They will blow your mind.
We have a yellow variety of dragonfruit similar to 'Israeli Gold' here in Australia, called... Aussie Gold. It actually used to be called ISIS gold, but the name didn't stick...
I might have an idea why that name has gone by the wayside 😅
I'm growing the Aussie Gold successfully in Melbourne. Cheers
Danger Zone!
😂😂😂😂😂 baaahahah
Yes, there are several variations. Some of us grew seedlings from the Yellow Undatus and they ended up white fleshed with a red skin
I *love* the spiny yellow dragon fruit and it kills me because they cost straight-up $7 per fruit where I live. Seven. Dollars. Each. 😭
Can you grow your own?
Been seeing them in NE Pennsylvania for around 4.50 each currently.
@@RAREDRAGONFRUIT This, I just planted like 50 seeds from a small portion of one, so wish me luck. Might even make a little money if they turn out.
@@luncius_I know I‘m late but try to plant a palora cutting. Cuttings grow so much fastet
Got one at my local grocery store for about $10, only bought one just because I really wanted to try it.
I had a dragon fruit only once. I wasn't so put off by the light flavor, but instead it was because the one I got basically tasted like boiled cabbage water.
Probably a white fleshed picked too early. They give dragon fruit a bad name.
The red ones look so cool! But I didn't like the taste either. I didn't think it tasted as bad as boiled cabbage water but I didn't care for it.
Grew mine from seeds. They are more tasty than supermarket bought fruits. Also, their flowers are quite pretty.
haha this is wild, I just today got both that spiny yellow one and a white one at my grocery store, and my experience with them was almost identical to yours, except I'm in texas. good to see some "new" and cool fruits gaining popularity and supermarket presence
Israel's agricultural and especially breeding research is top notch. For instance they got into mangos with soil that is anything but great for mangoes. Didn't stop them - they just bred some that grew and became world class producers. Like in the Netherlands. Agriculture+meticulous science create great results.
Desert King is their best dragon fruit export.
I bought a variety at Rusty’s market in Cairns just called purple dragon fruit. It’s a deeper colour than the red and sweeter. I grew some of the seeds and I currently have a plant that’s about 3inches long since I planted it in January.
hey ye got that first yellow variety here in Colombia, we call them "pitaya" really sweet and refreshing. (3 dollars per fruit, kind of expensive for us)
Been enjoying a lot of your videos since traveling South America :) Currently in Colombia and I've been eating as many yellow dragonfruits as I can before returning to the States where prices are less friendly. They're super nutritious, too! As for the red dragonfruit...it's all looks with nothing to show for it lol
I watch this kinda. But my kid loves to watch ur channel with me. Chilling with her is dope watching u explore
I love the white dragonfruit. Love the beautiful magenta colored shell from the inside. It's a shame you've only had bland tasting ones. The ones I've had have been delicious.
The yellow ecuador dragon fruit cost 30 bucks each here LOL but they are so freakin sweet that its worth it
Ecuador Palora? I get like 30-40 off mine every year....
@@Ineluki_Myonrashi yes. Sometimes they go on sale for 50 for 2. I guess after import it cost alot. Even the ecuador passion fruit/granadilla cost 9.90 each on sale. Lucky for me i managed to find a local grower few years ago and got 2.2lbs for 15 bucks only.
@@jonathanlee97 Interested to know, where are you in the world?? I live in Australia.
@@Ineluki_Myonrashi pretty close to you. Malaysia.
My city cosnstantly recieves fresh ecuatorian YDF, and oh lord, they are something else in flavour, the best i've eaten are extremely juicy, crunchy, have a sourness around a 4 and 8 on sweetness as well as having a strong tuna and kiwi flavour.
The first one you show in this video I can usually find at Wegmans or even Tops sometimes. Now I have to be on the lookout for this Israeli one too! Thanks for the heads up!!!!
I just had my first yellow dragon fruit and it tastes like a mix between kiwi and pineapple watered down. I love it.
I laughed way too much at "little flappy bits" a great desciption to be sure.
I have regular yellow one, its by far The Best frutting one i have. For 3 years now it produces around 30 large fruit.
❤Costco had the white followed by the deep yellow which was sweeter than a white table grape. I loved it. In second place was the Jack fruit. You were correct on the flavor. I will buy again with a touch of Mexican Lime. 😊
2:43 so wild how it grows at the very tip of the leaf
Unless you count spines and scales, the only leaves Hylocereus or Selenicereus ever produce are the seedling cotyledons. The photosynthetic parts (as in most cacti) are stems, and flowerbuds (and spines/hairs, usually also the new branches) emerge from "areoles" (meristematic pits, along the ribs or turbercles, usually producing spine clusters though most Hylocereus lack spines) along the "edges" of those stems.
thanks for takingthe time to tell me @@erikjohnson9223
I lived in the NJ side of Philly. There was also a HUGE population of people from India and Korea as well. I had SO MANY awesome groceries near by that were chokeful of items I’d be hard pressed to even find on Amazon. The fresh pickles (daikon), chutney, kimchi, and tofu that were made IN those stores was absolutely DELICIOUS, and economical. I miss having that available. I’m in rural va, and things are just… blech.
Earliest I've ever been to one of these videos 😊 I'd been waiting for a yellow dragonfruit video
When I was a kid, I saw one of these in a shop (in UK) and begged my mum to buy one. I was a bit underwhelmed by the taste, but me being me, I tried growing the seeds (nothing has changed there). This was pre-internet days, so was surprised when cacti started growing. Had them for years until I moved out and my parents killed them 😞
The small yellow dragon fruit I have found in several Asian grocery stores in Brooklyn over the last year or two. They are soo good🤤🤤
My local store recently started selling pink-green israeli dragonfruits
You definitely don't get paid enough to do the community service you do Jared. You saved many people some money! The way they're promoting this fruit (expectations) vs reality are so different here is crazy!
Both really beautiful dragon fruits.
At least in my area people refer to the Selenicereus megalanthus as Golden Dragon Fruit, though I have occasionally seen it called Kirin Fruit.
Thanks, I am very happy, that first what you tested is better
I remember in the early 2000s I wanted to try a dragonfruit after seeing one on a Caprisun pouch. I couldn't find it anywhere and when I did find it it was some ridiculous price like $10 per fruit. Now they're everywhere.
I wanted to grow dragon fruit from seed, couldn’t find any (reputable) online seller, and figured I’d see if I could find one at Whole Foods. They had 1 single yellow one. Cost $8/lb. I did a quick google and read they were sweeter so I bought it for the seeds. The fruit was DELICIOUS.
When you want to grow One I would buy a palora cutting and let it root. It’s faster that way
I will put tajin on it.
Jared, thank you for the videos. I wish I were able to do what you have been doing. (But with one of those tiny bottles of tajin in my pocket lol)
great idea. nothing can stop you with a bottle of tajin 😄
Yellow dragonfruit or 'Pitaya', as it is known in my native Colombia, is one of my favorite fruits. I think they're locally grown, but I don't believe they're indigenous to the region. I used to have them often when I was a child, but I haven't had them in a long time due to the fact that they have become incredibly expensive to buy.
I'm glad to see that you prefer the standard yellow variety. I wonder how it would compare to the purple variety. We don't really get that kind in Colombia, and I'd like to know how stark the difference between them, flavor- and texture-wise, is.
Hylocereus undatus is best when it's left to ripen on the plant and picked just as the end starts to split. that's the point where the fruit splits open revealing it's pulp which would normally be eaten by birds or animals or whatever.
Appreciate the grocery store review. Like, I watch you bc you go neat places and do neat things, but it's also really useful when you do eps on fruits ppl might actually encounter, or want to plant possibly.
I've gotten the red flesh dragon fruit at our local supermarket because my teenager loves the drink. They were pretty bland to me and cost almost $10 apiece. As many parents know feeding a finicky teenager is tough and glad she quickly moved on to other novelties.
That first yellow dragonfruit was the first kind I ever had. It became my favorite fruit. I ate three of them. That was a mistake, lol. I was in the restroom all night. But I tried it because of you. Thank you!
I have since learned you can fry the peels and grind them into a sweet powder. I add it to my tea.
Woops. yeah those things can sneak up on you.
I've got to make a dragon fruit rind episode one of these days. I've heard that they eat them as a vegetable in Indonesia. 🤔
@@veranichole1981thanks for the tip! I love being able to use what people might consider food scraps!
Excellent.
the one you did first is my favorite. Freez half and eat with a spoon for a good cold dessert.
Sounds great
Lemme get my Dragonfruits, and eat em while watching this 😋
Have you ever sat down and tried every type of basil... I'm grew a bunch of different species easily this year ... I recommend lemon basil it is wow! It actually tastes like lime alot. I also have a mystery basil that's super Fragrant I want to say it's thai but the flavor is super intense like perfume but taste good. I have a black/purple basil it taste like mild cherries, holy basil, Greek basil, I have more variety but there run of the mill
Those fruits look like the should give you weird powers at the cost of being able to swim.
What a coincidence. Recently I got a couple of red Dragon Fruit for the first time here in Jamaica. Had no idea what it was until I searched it online - cactus fruit. Collected seeds from one of them and going to try to grow them.
I believe there are a few different species that grow wild in the islands in your region
@@RAREDRAGONFRUIT The red ones I got were great - a really intense flavour, not quite like anything I've had before. I'm in a dry part of Jamaica, so they might grow well here. Gonna give it a try.
Huh, I def wanna try these. I remember the surprised disappointment of my first white dragonfruit, lol.
I got a yellow one at Netcost in New Jersey, like ten minutes from my house. lol
Also in Prato, Italy you can find it
It is very beautiful and delicious when ripened taste sweet and little crunchyness from seeds ❤ to eat .Yes Very costly and less found in the grocery store in America
I don't normally try to grow plants from fruit seeds, but I was so surprised at the taste of that spiny yellow dragon fruit, that I put a spoonful of seeds into a pot, and delighted to find I am growing that several little cacti. I have been told that yellow DF do not grow/fruit in Florida, but I will see how they do!
For White Dragon Fruit normally if the farm picking it when it ripen enough it will still have some sourness then it need to be put on the shelf for 2-3 night before it start to turn into sugar. but if it taste bland and barely taste any at all then it unsavable. if farmer grow it correctly with care it can taste very sweet tho it still a gambles to buy from markets unless i directly order it from farmer.
Great find on the Israeli yellow dragon fruit. I see the layout of the store looks like Hung Vuong. For me, for some odd reason, the yellow dragon fruit sweetness taste like saccharine that I avoid them, even if they’re cheaper. However, 99% of the time, the yellow dragon fruit has a soapy taste (for me). Now in some of the red, I taste the soapy taste too. Does anyone else encounter this? BTW, I do eat some cilantro and it doesn’t taste soapy and I do wash the dragon fruit…
haha literally live in jersey, I've seen both of these yellow dragon fruits in asain markets! I didn't know the one was so new
those yellow dragonfruits are extremely sweet, I dont know where you got yours. I live in israel and here they taste the sweetest of any kind Ive ever tried
Sort of a coincidence, I just picked the first yellow dragon fruit off my plant a couple days ago. It's of the Selenicereus undatus type, though when I got the plant I was expecting it to be the the Selenicereus megalanthus type. So I was a little surprised when it wasn't spiny. Still had a decent flavor though. Dragonfruit are super variable in sweetness and flavor from one plant to the next and depending on ripeness. When picked still slightly green most still have some acidity. But that fades as they ripen.
I love the smaller yellow dragon fruit
Good work!
I love the normal yellow dragon fruits. Its refreshing and sweet but not too much. Like a refreshing sugar cube flavor. If markets sold them normally id buy them all the time
I came here because I was wondering which variety of yellow skin dragon fruit I will order online. I've got a good idea about the 2 types of yellow skin varieties, thank you .
Pink skin,white/pink flesh are common in my area and I grow them (really good to eat freshly plucked from garden!not overly sweet but definitely not bland!)but yellow skin variety I've not seen or tasted. I'm off to order both 2 varieties of yellow now 💛
Dragonfruit is my favourite fruit of all time so seeing this pop up was nice. lol
I remember my brother getting me some dragonfruit from an Asian market and it immediately became my favourite just from the name alone. lol
Great video!
I say this again theres something about the fluro pink inside version of the Pitaya which you don’t have today to taste test which took my tastebuds to 11
look for the red flesh ones, those taste the best for me. no sourness and really sweet with berry notes.
homegrown white dragon fruit is incredibly tasty. It actually does taste kinda like kiwi then
I'm really curious which among the thousands of fruits you've tasted goes well if made into a smoothie.
Would be a great video.
Taste is personal, but I think anything good in a milkshake would work in a smoothie. Annonas (soursop, atemoya) and American pawpaws seem obvious because they are already creamy, but I've found that since the dairy additives already play that role, I actually prefer intense/rich & tart fruit, such as blackcurrant and blackberry (esp. the Andean one, Rubus glaucus, sold as "Mora" pulp in some Hispanic grocers in large Midwest cities; in the Pacific Northwest, where Marrionberry and boysenberry are grown and available, those would probably be similar). Your mileage may vary.
Edit: Google is *evil*. Had to undo its auto"correct" from "sourdough" back to "soursop." Aside from its antitrust violations and the pro-CCP, pro Salafist terrorist behavior of the Utoob "algorithm" and censorship/fact-checker departments, G00gle is simply creating horrible, dysfunctional software these days and needs to be utterly destroyed as a company. If you do like bread smoothies (novo-Depression era cuisine?), you can take G00gle's advice. I won't, but tastes vary.
Yeah, my local Asian grocers all seem to stock the yellow ones now. Even 5 years ago that wasn't the case. Prices are a bit more reasonable now too, coming down from like $7 to $3. Thanks again for the great videos, keep it up!
Please review Pawpaw! It’s pawpaw season across the US, and it s the largest native fruit in the country!
I did! :) check the archive weirdexplorer.com
Yes! Just got 2
Tree’s yesterday so they can cross pollinate
Also tastes good with tijin seasoning
i love the flavors of alot of fruits and veggies but i find it so very difficult to get over the textures most of the time. something about it makes me want to gag despite my tastebuds wanting more
I grow both of those in my garden
The yellow dragonfruit is the best for sure, but I wonder if "ripeness" affects flavor on the white/Israeli dragonfruit in particular. There's no way to tell when produce was harvested, but when a new load comes in it might be worth it to buy a few extra and do a taste test every few days. See if it loses or gains some flavor over time.
I think that dragonfruit have been getting better in general. Even the really insipid ones have always been nice to eat if you added a bit of lime or sugar, but the ones I've had lately have had much more sweetness and flavor. And by "much" I mean a tiny bit, but noticeable to me. I live in Taiwan, and our local red dragonfruit have gone from about the same as white ones, a decade ago, to genuinely tasty, currently. That is all entirely subjective. I suspect there's a whole lot of breeding going on behind the scenes, though, just like fucking kiwis but without the monopoly.
looks like dragon fruits put all their points into aesthetics
You can’t change a clone/cutting to something different. Hence the name clone. It’s an exact replica of the plant it came from. You can only breed the clone to something else. They must have taken the red white flesh clone and pollinated it with a different variety of dragon fruit to make a hybrid. What you have there is a hybrid of two or possibly more pheno types.
White Dragon fruit is yummy, it goes great in fruit salad, smoothies, and salads because they are sort of lightly savory-fresh like jicama
Had white and red. Of the two, red definitely is more flavorful, in dragon fruit standard of flavorful.
Had red last month and made it into a milkshake. Nice color but still needs some help with the flavor department.
the yellow one with the spike taken off, it suppose to have a hint of honey taste, but because they picked it green so it can ripe on the shelf, it wouldnt have the true taste
As I remember, the "white"-fleshed dragonfruit is more grey. Adding to the dreary blandness.
Countless new varieties exist out there, with sweetness ranging from 5 to 7, all of these need crosspollination though, so, you can't find them easily as producers prefer to grow the self-pollinating ones.
I am growing red dragonfruit plants now. Hopefully, they'll fruit next year. I'm expecting them to taste superior to what one might find in grocery stores since most produce is picked when they are less than ideal for eating (in order to ship without being damaged).
On a side note, the mountain olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a highly invasive fruiting tree. We don't have them here in Florida where I live, but they are fruiting in Michigan, the Appalachian Mountains, etc. I just saw a video from Mike McGie doing a jelly video where he added pear and poke weed berries. Maybe you should make a video on the mountain olive berry. I hear it makes an excellent mead. I can give you a mead recipe if you need one...takes about 45-50 days to make and clear out.
Please do a review of the mexican pitaya (Stenocereus queretaroensis) if you get your hands on it. It is a totally different cactus to the dragon fruit and said to be a lot sweeter.
I just had a yellow dragon fruit while watching this video, they are much sweeter and favorable than the white dragon fruit, very delicious
Just half of the kirin fruit makes me non stop shit for the whole day 💀
Home grown dragon fruits are always more flavorful. They have to pick the ones for shipping too early or they don't survive the journey in good shape.
