We all have heard about the valiant battle fought by Jhansi ki Rani Lakshmi Bai against the British East India company. In this battle Rani fought with his son Damodar Rao tied to her back. Rani died later but what happened to Damodar Rao?
Born Anand Rao to a cousin of the Maharaja, he was adopted shortly before the Maharaja's death in 1853. This ensured the Jhansi throne would stay within the family lineage.
However, the British East India Company, under the Doctrine of Lapse, refused to recognize Damodar Rao's claim. This policy annexed any princely state without a male heir. Rani Lakshmi Bai fiercely resisted this injustice but died in battle. Later Damodar Rao ran away with some Maratha generals and tried to escape the british.
