Hi Mike, I love the way that you are prepared to go off-piste and explore out of most tourist's comfort zone. You are correct about the bombing. I doubt that there was much left after all those nightly bombing raids. I was surprised at Shoreditch as I thought that it would have more street littering, plastic bin bags etc. Try to visit Greenwich, east of London, when the weather brightens up a bit. Visit the Old Royal Naval College with its painted hall and ceiling. Stand on the Greenwich Meridian at the Royal Observatory and see the Thames Barrier.
Off Licence means that they're licensed to sell alcohol for consumption "off" the premises. Pubs have an "on" licence and sometimes allowed to be "off" licence too (since COVID however, pubs with just an "on" licence can also sell for consumption "off" the premises). Note that two licences are actually required - a personal licence (they check out if you're responsible enough to sell alcohol) and a premises licence (they check if the building / location is suitable to sell alcohol).
Just a bit to add - the term Off Licence (sometimes shortened to "Offie") we basically use the same way you guys do for Liquor Store. Example: "I'm just popping down to the offie for some beers, you want anything?"
