    One thing that a lot of people are unaware of until they notice (or read the manual), if all 3 of the top m.2 slots that are connected to the cpu directly (lanes wise) are occupied, the gpu primary slot is reduced to x8 speed. Should be noted that really only has a meaningful effect on performance for an RTX 4090 (and even on that it's less than 5% if memory serves) and perhaps the 5080 & 5090 of next Gen. But it's something to think about if you actually plan on using all 5 m.2 slots (which I do when I get this board next month).

    • @mrlemondaddy
      @mrlemondaddy 24 дня назад +1

      This is one of the reasons I went for AsRock x870e PG Nova Wifi. No lane sharing with the GPU for a reasonable amount of money. Glad that I got it before it is out of stock.

    • @LOLHoneybadger
      @LOLHoneybadger 24 дня назад +3

      @mrlemondaddy yeah my problem is I need the extra m.2 slot so I can run my x4 pcie NVMe card & get that 6th drive going lol
      The Strix is one of few X870E boards that has 5 m.2 slots though. Wish they'd bring back HEDT platforms to mainstream, I miss having 44+ PCIe lanes available for actual devices on PCs. It's sad that the devices we have that use PCI Express lanes have only went up & the amount of lanes available on mainstream desktop parts has gone down so much.

    • @JosephKarthic
      @JosephKarthic 16 дней назад

      @@LOLHoneybadger so even if we use any one of the top 3 m.2 slots the graphic slot is reduced to x8? do you really see a difference in gaming if its x8 speed on a pcie 5?

    • @LOLHoneybadger
      @LOLHoneybadger 16 дней назад

      @JosephKarthic only the 2nd or 3rd slot slow the gpu slot. M.2-1 doesn't effect it. I ended up getting the board & I'm having issues with m2-2 not showing up sometimes lol

    Noob question here - With the 2nd and 3rd M2 slots sharing bandwidth with the PCIEX16(g5) which the GPU would connect into, does that mean that if you connect two SSD's into those M2 slots, you will throttle your GPU? My build will utilise x2 2TB SSDs, so if I connect one into M1 and one into M2, GPU will still run at x16?

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  Месяц назад +3

      100% not a noob question - PCIe bifurcation is confusing, lol. According to the official product page, you are correct in assuming that running drives in those slots will drop your GPU lanes to x8. Luckily, gen 5 x8 is still more than enough to get the most out of 95% of current GPUs. I'd personally run my main M.2 in slot 1, and the rest in slots 4 and 5 just in case.

    I'm curious if it's worth getting this motherboard with 9800x3d especially when it's been confirmed Zen 6 will use the AM5 socket so choosing a X870 chipset as it has higher ram speeds available just incase Zen 6 can use faster speeds better.

      If I get my hands on the X3D while I still have the board I definitely will! I wouldn't personally pick a board specifically for the memory support if I were you. There's a speed sweet spot for Ryzen where going faster results in some serious diminishing returns...

      Primarily because of the faster transfer speeds. The less time it takes for video files to go from memory card to PC, the more time I have to actually get work done. The higher bandwidth also means getting better performance out of something like a high-speed USB hub. Those are the two biggest ones for me personally.

    I can see a lot of comments below saying a board like this isn't worth it but man, I gotta disagree. Its visibly a very premium board with tonnes of machined metal heatsink, overkill hardware and I'd honestly pay an extra £50 for that rear IO alone.

    someone explain the lane sharing set up on this one to me, GPU in the pcie slot, first SSD in m2_1? extra SSD in m2_4?

    • @EQUID
      @EQUID 3 дня назад

      So the first top three slots for the M.2 are your new Gen5 PCIE. M.2-1 is the one under the Ram slots that has the quick release heatsink, this one is a slot with no compromises towards the other PCIE lanes. M.2-2 and M.2-3 will be the ones right under the CPU slot they both share the same Heatsink or right above the PCIE for the GPU.
      These two M.2-2 and M.2-3 slots are gen 5 and share the same lanes with each other which are controlled by a switch to interchange transfers I believe I can be wrong on this one. M.2-2 and M.2-3 compromise the PCIE 16X cause it also shares the same lanes. So when you populate any of these M.2 with a SSD your board will automatically set the PCIE 16X to run at 8X only no matter the Gen type SSD.
      The Bottom M.2 -4 and -5 will be your GEN 4 PCIE on the X870e chipset. They do not compromise the other PCIE lanes. So if you have a GEN 5 SSD and a GEN 4 SSD you'll want to use your M.2-1 with Gen5 SSD and M.2-4 with Gen4 SSD or just use the M.2-1 if running a single SSD no matter the Gen you on.
      Just note that it will run according to the Gen so if you use a Gen4 SSD on Gen5 ready PCIE it will only run at Gen4 speeds. Same if you running a GEN5 SSD on Gen4 PCIE.
      hope this helps

      Honest question - in what way would you expect it to be better? The x670e exposes the same number of PCIE lanes as the x870e, and the Crosshair Extreme makes pretty good use of them already. You have USB4 (although the controller shares bandwidth with m.2_1), and two PCIE that will run at x16/x0 or x8/x8 (and others) assuming you don't use m.2_2 when they self-nerf. You have a third Gen5 m.2 slot though and another Gen4, so you have options. Is WiFi7 enough of a reason? (And is the WiFI on a swappable pcie card on the x670e?)

    Question: What is max no. displays (4K @ 60Hz) which can be connected to this board, to be driven from iGPU using 9900X CPU?
    I understand this board has 1x HDMI and 2x USB 4 (supporting DP over USB). In principle, each USB 4 port could output to two 4K displays @ 60Hz (using an MST USB-C to dual DP adaptor). So I wonder whether it might be possible to drive FOUR, or even FIVE 4K @ 60Hz displays from the iGPU?
    (of course, another limitation is max no 4K @ 60Hz displays supported by 9900X iGPU itself, I heard this might be a max of FOUR, but unconfirmed?)
    I am planning new build using Ryzen 9900X and X870/X870E Mobo. Will not be used for gaming, for productivity only. I won’t install a discrete graphics card, will rely only on integrated graphics.

    I have ROG Crosshair VIII Hero, but this looks like crap! I just bought MSI X870e Carbon for the same price as this catfish. It LOOKS WHAT! ALL M.2's ARE Toolless no screwdriver needed, nor small screws to drop into MB when changing M.2's like on this Strix monstrosity, Get it together ASUS without us having to spend $700 for a good-looking MB like the HERO's, you made me buy elsewhere.
    I have been building with ASUS only since 1998.

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  Месяц назад

      Harsh, but fair enough. Purely aesthetically the Carbon doesn't do it for me as much personally, but the toolless heatsinks for all of the slots are a big win. The screws on the heatsink I removed in the video are captive - they won't be falling straight into your PSU (which has happened to me a couple of times 😅).

      @TheTechTank  Месяц назад

      Yeah, unfortunately that's how almost all of the consumer motherboards and chips work. If you need a ton of PCIe lanes you'll have to go with something like the Epyc or Threadripper platforms 😭 To be fair though, depending on your graphics card, 8x PCIe 5.0 lanes will likely still give you full or near-full performance.
