- Another purchase from the big Fly Fishing Show in NJ, had me literally testing the waters against some beautiful wild brownies. The Douglas Upstream 8'8"/4wt., is a medium action rod that loaded very nicely with a DT4W Floating line with my three fly nymphing tandem rig. Matched up with my 45yr old Heddon 300 fly reel, felt very well balanced and a joy to use all day.
Another great informative video Scott!
Thank you Drew! Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Getting it done with some good smaller stream action! Getting good browns out of smaller water is fantastic! Thanks for sharing! Have a great Sunday!
Hi Craig! Love those little class A streams, surprising some bigger fish that come out outta them. Glad you enjoyed it. Have a blessed day. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the video Scott Very good as usual I am glad you like your new setup Stay safe and tight lines
Thank you Snook! Yes, very happy with the new outfit. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Great to see you out and about and doing your thing , great job and God bless you and yours
Thank you Rich! Especially for your blessing. God is good! No complaints here. Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Enjoyed it Scott. Thanks for sharing.
Hi John! You’re welcome and my pleasure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Ahh, another great way to start my sunday..thanks Scott
Good morning Len! You’re welcome and my pleasure. Have a blessed day. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
First of all good luck and plenty of fish on your new stick ! It’s nice to have a good selection in your arsenal! Nice work on both days , and looks like the fly preference was evenly distributed! Nice to see you getting out regularly on this mild winter, it’s a win win for all of us ! Stay safe and tight lines Scott!
Thank you very much! I’m very happy with the new rod, just perfect for the smaller streams. Oh yes, this mild Winter is definitely bringing out the bugs sooner. BWOs and little stoneflies active already and bringing some fish up to the surface. But we still need some steady rain on a regular basis. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
All kinds of new toys, Scott. Looking forward to seeing that net in action between your knees. Also always appreciate the stream side entomology class. That 1st spot on day 1 was nice less the 3 tires on the far bank. Hate to nice a nice hole with those eye sore.
Looking forward to the next and Go Birds!
Hey Anthony! Ha! Don’t think I can bend my neck that tight to show you the net between my legs 😅. Well, honestly, I’m just grateful the people allow fishing on their property, a really really nice family. Boys and their toys! Ha! Super Bowl Sunday, fly Eagles fly!!
Thank you again Scott. Good tips Leaving for PA for a few days tomorrow I will be packing my conventional 8’8” 4wt.
I looks like there is no worry of ice and snow
Great video thanks
Good morning James! Oh yes, you should be good, even the prediction of a little rain here and there may be a good thing. Thanks for watching and commenting, and good luck. Have a safe and fun trip.
It’s always interesting when you finish those little streams now that you’re handicapping yourself with that little short rod. Good one🎉
Thank you Doug! Whole different approach to fishing the little streams, love the fish and the challenge. A pleasure fishing those streams with a comfortable rod. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Nice man, like the new rod, I wouldn't mind something that size might check it out. Great luck both days, a few real nice browns. You are getting some good days this winter, I need to get out more!! Thanks as always!
Jon
Hi Jon! Nice to hear from you, hope you’re doing well. Oh yes, with those little brookie streams you like, a rod that size would be perfect. Back to a bigger stream on tomorrow’s video, check it out if you get a chance. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 will do!
Hi Scott, I have watched a lot of your videos, new and old alike, during the period I have been unable to fish. Always impressed by your ability to put fish in the net, I enjoyed each and every video you put up. I appreciate what you do here on PA Woods n Water. Thanks and Regards, Sam
Hello Sam! And thank you for your kind words. Very happy to hear your finding the videos entertaining and learning from them too. Hope you’re able to get back out on the water soon. Really appreciate you watching and commenting and all your support.
Another great video! Make a shirt that says "Pa Woods & Wudder" and Ill order faster than you can say boom
Ha! You made me laugh 😂. That would be nice but don’t really wanna get involved in the merch, sorry! But thanks for all your support. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Moved from Jersey so your vids are getting me excited about PA possibilities.Researching and learning the spots and loving those wild browns. ,much more than Jersey has.
Hello Peter! Welcome to PA and our fabulous trout streams. Yes, we do have some great wild brownies and brookies here, but don’t overlook all the fun our stocked streams and rainbows. After a few short months those leftover stockies are just as challenging as the wilds. Glad to have ya as resident. Have fun and be safe. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Nice way to break in the new stick, Scott! Good looking stream too!
Hey hey Cory! Thank you brother! Hope you’re doing well, catching fish and having fun. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Good Morning - Thanks for sharing !!!
Good morning David! Hope you’re enjoying with your breakfast and coffee ☕️. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Scott , great fishing as always 👍🏼 Nice new Rod also !! I’m close to Edison Expo , wish I got to meet you . Thanks for sharing your trip 🎣
Hi Chuck! Thank you very much! Sorry I didn’t get to meet you, I was at the show only on Friday. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
That rod looks very nice
Thank you! It is and not that expensive, comparatively speaking. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thank you for another great video. Following the science rod change and why you changed rods was very important to me. I can handle 20 trout and my hands never smell touch 1 sucker carp whatever and I can't even get in my truck need soap anybody else have this problem?
Hi Denny! You are 1000% correct!! One touch of a sucker and you got smelly hands, Yuck! It’s not necessary, but having a rod that’s nicely sized for a stream is so much more comfortable to fish with all day. Thanks for watching and commenting.
That right there is Tenkara water. Fish fast, fish light, leave the net at home. Try it, you might like it.
Maybe, some day!
Great video again. Thanks Scott! Did you get a new net? Good reminder about managing the slack. Sometimes I slow down my rod to steepen the sighter if the water gets deeper along a drift but you are right that you can mess up your drift by moving it too much. Thanks Scott.
Good morning Scott! Yes, it’s an Orvis catch and release net, the square frame really appealed to me because I can hold it better between my legs when releasing the fish. I couldn’t do it in this video because my new rod’s handle is so skinny it slips through my rod holder, so I had to still hold onto my rod when removing the hook. Yes, I still see guys bouncing their rod all around, very very important to keep that rod as steady as a rock. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Nothing like a new rod. How did you like that Douglas. Looked to be fast action. Well done Scott!!
I really like it for e we hat it’s made for, small to medium size streams. Actually, it’s a medium action rod, loads very nicely with not a lot of line out and works very well with a Double Taper Floating line. Take care Brian and thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks again for the video of your experience on the water. You did well. Also, I appreciate the valuable information regarding line control and rod positioning for the application and presentation of the fly you fish with. This helps a lot for novices like me in this sport! Question, what knot do you use on your flies to your tippet?
Hey Jerome! You’re welcome and my pleasure. I only use a simple clinch knot, the important thing with this knot is make sure you do at least 4-6 complete twists and wet the knot before you pull it tight and make sure it’s seated properly. Any failures I’ve ever had with this knot was user caused. 🙄. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Scott. Saw the Big Lehigh Rainbow Vid. Nice fish! Are you putting together a larger video on that outing?
Hi Jeff! Sorry, no, that was a tough day. I only caught that one fish in the morning. In the afternoon I gave up and went down to the Little Lehigh and finished my day very well down there. But I saved that clip just to show you guys that big boy. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I wish more rod companies would make pretty reel seats like that.
Hello Ev! Usually the smaller rods with smaller reel seats have that style because that kind of reel seat can only support small reels with the slide rings. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks Scott for this and all of your videos. Really appreciate the hard work you put into it. Also, is there anyway I could reach you for some help. Thanks again!
Thank you Todd! Yes, you can email me at: scottmxdad@yahoo.com. Thank you for your kind words. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thanks for another fun video. Did u happen to measure the water temperature? I’m wondering if there is a critical temperature at or above the fish are active and begin feeding. My guess is 40 degrees.
Hi Leonard! In my experiences, I’ve haven’t found that water temperature by itself affects the feeding ad much as a quick drop in temps. Example: The temp could be, let’s say around 35 degrees, the first day it drops to that temp will shut the fish down. But if its that temp for several days, the fish will get acclimated and start feeding again. And it often is that way even if the temps are in the 40s, the sudden drop usually is what causes the fish to stop feeding, but only for a short time, the fish still need to eat even when it’s cold. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hey Scott - Good to see on a small stream again. Love the new toys - LOL. Great choices. That rod was on my short list when I was looking for a new small stream rod, ended up with the new Orvis SFG 3 weight, which I would recommend to anyone. Nice net! I had that net in my hand multiple times at the expo, finally put it down and walked away - LOL. Now that you used it, how do you like it?
Good morning Mike! Haha! I did the same thing, had it in my hands several times and came back to it several times. Very very nice net but way too expensive! I talked myself into buying it, really had to twist my own arm, ha! What really appealed to me was the square frame, can hold it firmly between my legs when releasing the fish. But couldn’t do it in the video because the new rod has such a skinny handle it slips through my O’Pros rod holder, so I still had to hold onto the rod while messing with the fish. Very comfortable using a rod that is matched to the size of the fish and the size of the stream, a pleasure to fish with all day. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Nice day! I'll never understand why Pa stocks hatchery fish on top of wild trout. Keep the action coming!
Neither can many of the rest of us!
Hi buddy! No, it’s not ideal but they gotta try to please everyone, even the meat fishers, they buy licenses too. The majority of the first stream is class A from the headwaters to the mouth, it’s roughly about 10 miles long and they only stock about 1.5 miles in the lower middle section and the wild brownies population is doing much better than I thought. The upper headwaters is mainly brookies. Healthy enough for all to enjoy, and after the first two months of the season, it’s rarely touched. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Were you in Berks? Just curious.
@@bdickinson6751 Hi buddy! No , Schuylkill County. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Scott thank You for all your videos. You get me all excited because we fish many of the same rivers. One observation that has been drilled into my head is the need to give the fish water immediately after catching. If I ran a 100 meter dash and immediately someone put my head in a bucket of water for 10 seconds I’d pass out. Please consider given them much needed oxygen and then get us your great pictures. Thank you
Is that yellow creek ? The stream with the cloudy water you were fishing in second half of video
Hi buddy! No , not Yellow Creek, I call Yellow “Little Penns” , just a gorgeous stream with great structure for trout habitat, but not easy to wade. Now I’m talking about the Yellow Creek in Bedford County. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have the same rod Scott. I’m interested in what reel you are using and what type of fly line?
Hi buddy! The reel I’m using is an antique, Heddon 300, about 45 years old, I’m also using a standard double taper floating 4wt. Line, I don’t remember the manufacturer but may be Rio or Scientific Anglers. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Great video Scott, your heading up to the Delaware, have you ever fished the Dyberry above Honesdale? Beautiful little stream well suited for the new rod. Lots of luck on the big D!
Hello Karl! Yes, actually I have fished the Dyberry twice, but both times in the Winter, I’d like to fish it in season one time. Maybe this year. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fun video, Scott. Thanks for posting, some really pretty fish. Man that 21” brown in that picture must have been a handful on that little 4 weight!! Would love to know what’s your leader setup when you’re nymphing with a shorter rod like that?
Hi buddy! I still use my 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty Leader with about 3.5 ft. of 4x Flouro then my tandem rig, I made the tandem rig outta 5x Flouro. It casts very nicely and loads the rod just fine, especially with the water load cast. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Really helpful, thanks man!
Where did u pick up heddon reel at & how much ???...how did u like the feel of the new rod ???
Hi Kipp! Actually, that reel I got brand new sometime in the mid 70’s, my dad had an archery pro shop and also sold some fishing stuff. I think the reel back then was around $12, ha! I did pick up another one off eBay a few years ago and an extra spool too. I’m very pleased with the rod, loads nicely with a DT4wt. floating line. I cut the line in half and save the other half for when it’s time to change out. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 thanx 4 the reply...thats pretty kool about the reel...i like vintage gear...but sometimes its expensive...lol...tight lines my man
21” on the Upstream! 😮
Surprised that rod handles a nymph rig like that so easily.
Hi Jamie! Well, I call it a mid-size rod, and being a 4wt. it still has some backbone towards the handle, but the medium action throughout makes the little guys feel nice too. Yes, the 4wt. makes it easier to handle a tandem rig and the wind nicely. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Another new fly rod? As Mrs. Potterfield would say, how many fly rods does one person need? lol Awesome video again. Keep it up.
LOL! And what’s Mr. Potterfield say, “Maybe just one more!” 😁 Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Hehehehe Can never have enough fishing equipment. That's a weird looking net!!!
@@georgenaugle7827
But I can hold it better between my legs when messing with the fish.
Scott! Congrats on the new set up from the fly fishing show in NJ. Douglas is a quality brand. What reel did you put on it? It does not look like or sound like a Euro Nymphing reel. Nice footage on the wild brownies as usual! It's a shame Class A waters get junk thrown in them like tires, bikes, and shopping carts. Sad really....
Hi Dave! I put one of my favorites, one of the first reels I ever got in the mid 70s, it’s called a Heddon 300, cost about $12 back then, it’s a classic, perfect for that rod. Some great fish in those overlooked “trashed” streams, a hidden beauty! Thanks for watching and commenting.
How is the trout whistler today .? I knew you 'd hook up when you broke into song in that second spot . Love it !!! I use a 9ft 5wt 4 piece everywhere i go . It works well on the WB as you saw yourselff but hard to drag the bigger boys to the net . I have my eye on a 10ft 4 for the Delaware but now you got me thinking a smaller rod might be the ticket as i fish mostly small streams in Jersey . Thanks for confusing me ! Any suggestions ? Love your new rod set up and thanks as always for another great video .
Jeff D
Ha! You always put a smile on my face. Thanks Jeff! Honestly, there’s so many good rod companies out there, I have many mid priced and high priced rods, but for the Delaware, I’d recommend a fast action rod and I wouldn’t go under a 4wt with the present fast and very fast action rods, you can usually over size the line by one size up. I’d recommend getting an extra spool, so you can use a 4 wt line, and for the windy days, have a 5wt line spooled and ready when needed, cause you will need it on the Delaware some days. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Hey thanks for the advice . I actually have an old orvis 4wtt reel with two spools i forgot about that . Makes sence to go for the 10ft 4 wt rod . Thats what ill do . Cheers Professor !!!
great video, great flyfishing btw is that a heddon fly reel? greetings from the Netherlands.
Hello Franklin! Great eye!! Yes it is, a Heddon 300, I got it new, sometime in the mid 70s, I actually have another one and a spare spool. A classic nockoff of a Hardy Marquis. I’m using a double taper floating line on it cut in half with added backing to take up space on the old style spool, keeps the memory coils down to a minimum. Nice hearing from the Netherlands 👍🏻. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
thanks for your nice reaction I have the same Heddon 300 with cordland #3 dt floating on it. tight lines and greetings from the Netherlands.
👍
Hey Phil! You’re welcome and my pleasure. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Looks like good water, but in the first segment, it's sad to see those tires and trashed sinks on the shore of a "Class A" trout stream !
Hi Jeff! Yes, that first part is on private property and the people are into junk and flea marketing, so I’m just happy they allow fishing on their property. The rest of the stream up and down is beautiful! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great video. Just not a fan of the Barclays
Thank you brother! Glad you enjoyed it, but not familiar with the Barclays. ??
@@pawoodsnwater7551 Barclays is who owns the Douglaston Salmon Run. The rod you bought is a Douglas. Barclays always a rich politician that owns the first 2/3 miles of the SR.
