Fly Fishing with Hurricane Debby on the Delaware's West Branch
Well, sometimes when you already have plans and reservations, you try to stay on schedule and hope for the best. I really only got just 1.5 days in out of my 4.5 day vacation, but all things considered, I was happy to get what I got. I was able to cancel my last two days without any penalties, so I sincerely thank WBA and Troufitter for their understanding. Some weather fronts turn on the fish, then some turn the fish off, this was definitely an OFF! I'll be back!

WELCOME TO THE UPPER DELAWARE!!, A Full Day of Fly Fishing the West Branch
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
It's the peak of summer, most waters are too warm and too low to fish for trout. So, where do we go?! The Upper Delaware baby! It's never a slam dunk up there, but it's one of the few places where we can go for great cold water, plenty of fish, smart fish, and BIG even smarter fish.
A Limestoner Plus Some Significant Rain = Good Summertime Fly-Fishing

Well, we got it again guys, a couple good heavy rain events, bumped up the water table. Now our local limestoners have some decent water temps and flows, and with bugs hatching, it's producing fun on the streams for us fly fishermen. Get it while we can, because you never know, it could be short lived. Tricos and terrestrials were on the menu today.

2024 Fourth of July week, we got a couple good rain events, brought the creeks up to nice levels, spread the fish out and gave us a few more creek options to fish. So, I headed up to BFC with my buddy Ryan, we fished all morning and a little into the afternoon, then took a long break for an early dinner with another friend, Mr. Dave Rothrock. Great fellowship during dinner made the fishing seco...

Gotta love the freestoners! Big bugs, little bugs, and plenty of terrestrials, we used it all this morning. A mix of hungry wilds and stockies gave us a bunch of targets to focus on, and the slow clear water made me choose a 7X tippet, which proved to be the right choice because we had many cooperating feeding fish. Come along with me and enjoy the water, the fish, the birds, and the fishing on...

Although my buddy Jeff from Trout Strike has been a RUclips colleague of mine for several years, and has corresponded back and forth many times, we have never fished together, until now. Come along with us as we share a whole day on Penns , going from nymphing to dries, back to nymphing then back to dries.

In this video I say this stream absolutely beat me up, and it did! I still caught a bunch of fish, but I never really figured them out until the last hour of the evening. So, it still looked like a good day, but all the frustrations were piled up on the editing floor, be thankful for what I cut out, it was ugly.

A calm quiet morning on a very slow glassy surface with trout slowly rising, mostly soft dimples with the occasional splashy rise, gives me numerous feeding targets and hope for a good fly-fishing session on the Tully. Come along with me as I trial and error my way through the first hour, until I see some flying ants and Tricos on the surface, then the action heats up!

The Bushkill Creek is such a pretty, more so urban, limestone waterway. the upper half runs through a country-suburban setting, and the lower half runs right through the city of Easton's park system, very near super busy streets, office buildings and factories. But what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for with great fishing, cold water, bugs and a good mix of stockies and wild trout.

    Thanks for the videos. A question. I know you say you sometimes grease your furled leader if you are going to fish dries, but not always. If you do grease it, are you still able to go back to nymphing or does the leader no longer perform properly with nymphs? In other words, I know you say you can use an ungreased leader for dries and nymphs, I’m wondering if the reverse is true - can you use a greased leader for both? Thanks for any info.

      Hi Jim! Yes, really doesn’t matter for nymphing, honestly it really doesn’t matter for dry fly fishing, it just makes the presentation a little nicer if you’re starting out with dries first, but it doesn’t affect your nymphing drifts in the least. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551 17 дней назад

      Hello Marcelo! There’s really not ever a bad time because it’s a tailwater fishery. For nymphing , I particularly like the Winter, usually the flow is lower and the fish are more opportunistic. For a combination of dries and nymphs, I’d say late April through June. As far as the flow rate, use the USGS Hale Eddy gage, anything below 600cfs is great, still fishable wading is between 600-1000. Try to stay off the East Branch below the Beaverkill junction from July through September, usually it’s too warm, usually the upper EB is ok year round above the Beaverkill. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

    Nice Scott! Love finding “new holes” in old spots. I never see anyone fishing that spot or anywhere other than that one riffle upstream from that bridge. That brown was nice. Gotta love the West Branch. Trout are everywhere, probably more trout in areas that get the least amount of pressure. Can’t believe you went up with the incoming tropical storm. I didn’t get to fish in the rain as much as I would have liked to this year, so many storms this year were forecasted to hit Hancock but mostly missed. And the ones that hit were thunderstorms. Just got back from Idaho. Floated the South Fork (section 3). Friend hooked a 24+ inch dark rainbow on the south fork, jumped, and broke off but it was a monster. I caught 2 large white fish. If you plan to float, I recommend World Cast Anglers. They actually have guides that tie their own flies instead of making customers buy 18 shop flies even if you don’t use them. Had better luck DYI fishing on the Henry’s Fork in St. Anthony. Landed a nice 18 inch brown w a hooked jaw in a small pool w 2 beavers. Took a dry fly as soon as it landed. All the other trout I landed were 10-12 inches, they all took a tan caddis emerger while I was stripping in line. Fish were not rising. Spent about 2 hours behind TroutHunter and landed a 5 inch rainbow. So many Ospreys diving into the river and pulling out trout. Saw like 5 Ospreys just hanging over the river flying against the wind and plunging into the river. Spectacular scene. Lots of floating junk but strangely enough didn’t get stuck on my fly nearly as much as the Deposit junk. Windy as heck. Good luck on in Montana!

      Hey Sung! Glad to hear you had a nice trip out West. Last time I fished the Henry’s Fork I fished around the Harriman Ranch area, no monsters but a bunch of solid 12-14”, saw several big boys feeding at dark but difficult to wade into good positions. I’ll mainly be fishing the Madison and the Gallatin, may try a couple other streams too. Yes, gotta love the West Branch! So much potential there, wish I lived closer. It always surprises me how much it pays to explore there. Hope to bump into before year’s end. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting.

    I've been Fishing The Catskill region since The early 1970's . One thing I learned was if You hooked a Decent fish try like Hec not to let it get downstream from you. Do your best to get below it and try to turn it upstream if they do. This way they're fighting Your Rod Plus The current. The first time I had my Bud Steve with me he hooked 7 fish in a few hours but failed to get any to the net. Steve this aren't Soprano Land stockies. Hook them get them on the reel if they run down get below them. He learned. My 2 cents. Great Video and You did Net a bunch of Beauties! Congratulations.

    • @pawoodsnwater7551
      @pawoodsnwater7551 23 дня назад

      Thank you buddy! And that’s good advice on a small stream with smaller fish, but a Delaware trout, anything over 12”, he covers water and screams off drag in seconds, absolutely no way to stay ahead of that fish. Yes, a decent fish, get him on the reel, bring him in as quickly as he allows, but don’t potentially hurt yourself running around the stream. Hold your ground, try to lead and direct that fish as best you can. Honestly, the odds are way in his favor to get off, the way he fights, never ending, jumping and twirling, plus that Delaware current, every fight is a challenge and consider it a big success if you actually get him in the net. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.

    Looking at the spot in the middle of the river where you caught the nice rainbow and lost the brown, it looks like it's just upriver from a small channel the goes around a little island just upriver from the bridge. There's probably a trough there that has a more visible current seam that goes into the channel. In any case, I know where I'm going the next time I come down to Hancock to fish. BTW, with the river peaked from Debby's rain, it got to over 9000cfs at Hale Eddy. The Fishs Eddy gage was up to 14.4 feet. Flood stage is 13.

    Hi Scott, thanks for the courageous effort ahead of the storm. You reminded me of Moses attempting to part the waters. 3 questions. You will mention at times I added split shot. But where? Where on your line in relationship to your rig ? Do you ever use the rothrock method ?, you are the King of glo bug. In fact people call you Scott G.B. (glow bug).. do you change out colors on the glo bug ? , if so when ? What % of fishing time do you have a glo bug on ? Better weather is ahead. Thanks again.

      Hello Dave! Moses!!?? That’s funny! 😂 I place my splitshot above my top fly, I build my tandem rig from my heaviest fly up top to my lightest on the bottom. I don’t prefer the drop shot rig method, I don’t want to fish the water column in most nymphing situations, most times when fish are feeding underneath they are mostly on or near the bottom. My method offers all threes flies to the fish down at their level, on the bottom, also I don’t like how the drop shot rig casts, because of all that weight on the bottom is casts more Iike a high hangtime lob cast. On the Globug, I mostly like to use the pale yellow or pale fluorescent orange colors, the egg pattern is very effective because it’s a major source of food for trout for almost 4-6 months of each year due to the brownie spawn in the Fall and the rainbow spawn in the Spring. Also the Globug is an excellent attractor pattern to catch a fish’s attention to make them look in the direction of your rig or to get them to move in the direction of your rig. Hope this helps. Hi Will! Yes, Dave is super nice, chatted with him for a long while, have a lot in common. My tandem rig I mostly use 4x on the Delaware, but 5x on smaller streams with smaller fish. I build it it with my heaviest fly up top down to my lightest on the bottom. I have around 16” of tippet between each fly and the past 3 years I’ve been tying them off the eyes, not from the bend of the hook and I don’t use tags, I place my splitshot above my top fly. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    WELL done Scott! Was up there yesterday 8/ 13 and Oquaga was just wadeable where it enters the Delaware. Above the intersection the Delaware water flow was pretty normal. BTW still some sulphurs around and fish hungry for them unlike when the hatch was full blown and they were soooo picky. BTW Troutfitters has a web site and Dave's father writes a piece almost everyday on the fishing and life in general. Look up Angler 119 Fishing Report on the bottom of the home page. I usually ad a comment after each trip up there ( Greg T) . I try to go there each week since it is only 2 hrs and 15 minute ride for me. Hope to see you one of these trips!

    The Deposit water and the sulfurs are extremely difficult. You can be a world class dry fly guy and have all the best emergers, cripples and use 6X all day long. Get great drifts and be lucky to maybe raise a couple 15" fish. The 17" and bigger fish seem to ignore any artificial. I seldom fish the upper river after the first week or two of the sulfurs because often you just feel like you are wasting your time.
