Johnny vs. The Playstation

- Every gamer had a console they grew up with, and when I wasn't playing Final Fantasy VI on my SNES, I was trying something new out on the newly-released Playstation 1. From 1996 until 2000, there was no other console or handheld I spent the same amount of time on; the PS1 had everything I needed, and didn't make me hate the fact that I missed out on the Nintendo 64 or Sega Saturn when they were all the rage.

That PlayStation startup sound is what you hear when you ascend into heaven
+brokenSCART While the PS2 "No Disc" sound was the decent to hell.
and the PS4 startup sound is the sound you hear right before you fall asleep.
And the second PS3 startup is when u wake up after u manage to have a good sleep
You're probably right...
playstaion will allways be the best
"Megaman X6 is not that bad"
This aged wonderfully!
XD
Well he did say that there were work arounds to possibly make the game somewhat enjoyable. But even then he said that your pretty much better off playing any other X game
Johnny then: “mega man X6 is not that bad”
Johnny now: “this game cheats, so I cheat back”
This game cheats so i cheat back, fuck it.
AH! So much nostalgia! It's great to find another RUclipsr that grew up with the PS1.
Caddy! How's that Spyro retrospective coming along?
couldn't keep a straight face when i read this
Caddy + Johnny = EPIC CROSSOVER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!
CADDICARUS!! I LUVS YOU!!
Caddicarus watching Johnny.
Good to know my 2 most favourite reviewers watch each other.
Considering how short my hair was previously, was going bald that eye-catching?
Yes.
just embrace it
or grow a beard
I really didn't notice :P
The juxtaposition between that shot and all the other ones stunned me. When you said "I know what you're thinking", I thought you were gonna bring that up, not ANYTHING about Crash. In fact, I didn't even notice the PC background-change.
i thought when you said ok i know what you're thinking i thought you were gonna talk about your bald head
God who else remembers growing up with this dude. Man it’s been a long journey I remember watching this video over and over again when I was a kid. Man how times have changed.
Yep, long hours of procrastinating on my homework in middle school and highschool were spent watching John and Clement. Crazy to think now I'm done with college and here I am still watching his stuff lol
Yep, now we’re watching his videos over and over again as adults…
yeah, i am rewatching his old videos right now at 2am. No idea why but i'm addicted
That PS1 opening... it made me flip my shit as a kid
mufasa nafisa dubane Yeah. It also scared me.
+Trovão why? i'm in love with it even today XD
Kitty Haze I have no idea, that sound just made me scared as fuck
***** that's ok the ps2 sound used to scare me...than i loved cit almost as much as the ps1's sound, sadly the ps3 doesn't make a cool sound like the other two :(
Ammal Ismail XD
Sincerely, you should do more console reviews.
5y7
+Miserable Masquerade He meant he wishes Johny reviewed more consoles. Not console games.
+Gwyn, Lord of Cinder agreed
He did, and his take on the PS2 is out riiiiight....now.
Dr. Masquerade Its okay man
'I'm flaming... in the manly way.'
10/10 - IGN
Rai "Manly Gay", anyone?
"Its tail time!"
Wow, my Dad did the EXACT SAME to me in 1996, he traded in all of my SNES games and the SNES itself to get me the PS1- without telling me.
Its insane how we both had the exact same parental experience, lol.
I have so many memories with this system, I was only 6 years old when I got it, for the next Christmas, my uncle bought me Resident Evil, the original. Wow man, that game gave me nightmares, it scared the shit out of my 6-7 year old brain, I'd never been this scared in my life but regardless, I just kept on playing, I continued to torture myself due to intrigue, and thus, my life long obsession with everything horror was born.
This is just one memory, its crazy looking back, thinking how much the PS1 molded me into the person I am today... wow.
Johnny: "All i had left is N and O"
Me: "NO?"
omg duuude i remmebr having one lying around and gave it to my friend for pokemon yellow.
While Pokemon yellow is awesome.
WHY
PS1 damn too many games to list off that still are some of my favorites of all time even today....
I see my favorite RUclipsrs (including you) just about everywhere I go. I guess I have good taste in channels. But yeah, PS1 just has too many good classics (FF IX is the stuff).
Same. It's not just nostalgia, the PS1 had games that stuck with ya because of how good or influential they were.
All the people I'm subscribed to are subscribed to other people I'm subscribed to. Or, you know, could have just come in and watch the latest vid, happens sometimes.
SomecallmeJohnny Metal Gear Solid is the best PS1 game in my opinion. It's stuck with me for a while.
I agree. I grew up on the ps2 but I've played some of the famous classics and now I use an emulator for games I can't afford.
0:09
my ears just jizzed
that sound is so gloriously nostalgic
I wanted Independence Day so bad but my dad wouldn't get it for me. Bless him, we never understand the wisdom of our parents until we're older
leftyfourguns If only AVGN existed back then.
Kinda like how the Nostalgia Critic begged his mom to take him to go watch The Garbage Pail Kids movie when it released in 1987 but his mom wouldn't yield. He's grateful (and thankful) that his mom never took him to see it.
Crash series , Spyro series, Tomba 2 and Front Mission 3. That was my childhood on ps1. As even if I had more games, those were my personal favourites.
Personally I think Johnny needs more videos like this. Instead of focusing on one game and describing every detail , he should focus on several games and just say his thoughts.
Yes! A Crash Bandicoot marathon! I've been thinking about giving these games a shot, so I'm curious to see what you think of them, John!
This is my favourite Caddicarus episode.
A lot of People Including Me, Probably played Crash and Spyro for the PS1 the most xDD
Crash, Spyro, and Tekken 3 were my main Playstation 1 games back in the day, that and Final Fantasy 9 which I still own the discs to but yay PSN release.
I was finally able to experience IX thanks to getting a physical copy at an anime convention. Though I still need to find time to play it, and try and connect my PS2 to my tv...even though it will make it look more pixelated.
The first game I can remember playing was Crash Team Racing.
Good times
I got it! He always played Sonic the Hedgehog on the PlayStation 1! That explains his Crash Bandicoot Wallpaper on his desktop!
Man, Johnny should do more reviews like this. Id love to see him reviewing the SNES or the PS2, for example!
Idk why, but this may be my favorite somecallmejohnny video. Not because it's the funniest, but because for some reason it just makes me feel this sort of magical feeling, not nostalgia since I didn't grow up with it, I can't quite explain it. Anyone else feel this way?
I have that feeling too. It isn't my favorite episode though, but it's high up there.
My first introduction into 3D gaming! The first game I played for it was the original Crash Bandicoot!!
So many good memories of the PS1. So many memories... :'(
That intro literally makes my day each and every time I hear it (meaning I replayed it 25 times before getting on to the actual video)
you must play the first "Spyro The Dragon"
hours of fun right there
***** All 3....for funzies and such
Spyro's next, holy balls! No, wait...
The good old days when ANYTHING that had the Squaresoft logo was a gem. Look at the mess that is Square-Enix now... man...
Fantastic video, Johnny! I would love it if you did more console reviews like this! Like the SNES, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and maybe even some of the more modern systems! Keep it up!
I love this. Please do more console memory videos. MegaDrive/Genesis, Dreamcast, PS2. I could listen to you talk and review games for hours
This video brought back so many memories! No girl problems, no money problems just playing awesome games with my friends on my PS1! I miss those days....sigh..
I LOVED the rugrats game it was so cool getting reptar in the end
The game can be fun, but the controls are AWFUL
Rugrats Studio Tour was better.
Honestly John your videos introduced me to a lot of cool shit and I can’t believe I’ve been following you for so long.
Still the best playstation review on youtube. I never get tired of watching it. I would love more Johnny Vs videos like this, dedicated to a specific console, it’s games and his memories of playing them
Ah, I love Toy Story 2 and Gex 2.
13:13 - 13:37
...Caddicarus will be pissed. Yep.
WarioJim Well Caddicarus also doesn't like Final Fantasy VII!!!
I'm annoyed as well, and sad.
Let them fight.
No seriously, get them a fighting game and watch them duel it out.
@@protoluigi2047 Not necessarily
@@protoluigi2047
Well, he seems to be into that game in the PS Classic review
for anyone that doesnt know, they actually found the prototype playstation snes console. it'll come up right away when you search it, it's a neat little piece of history
0:00 RIGHT IN THE CHILDHOOD, it felt good
I find it funny how when he said he had a copy of Chrono Cross that he never played I was like WHAT THE FUCK?! right before the angry sound effects came on lol
"I purchased Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee"
Huzzah!
"and I immediately regretted that purchase."
Dammit!
lol, Sorry 'bout that.
SomecallmeJohnny I felt the same way, it was kinda like a stab. Crazy how we can get so invested in something we like that when others say things like that it feels so personal.
I only wish I could change your mind so you could play the second one and see what all the fuss is about.
Great review! Hard to find reviews that include the nostalgia and memories behind the games and consoles.
This is an amazing video, even to those without nostalgia. But I love watching these types of video to see what the hype was about, and the good games to get. In my country the N64 was much more popular that I didn´t even knew PS1 existed(everyone owned a N64).
Even though I was not exposed to RPGs super young until pokemon, I love them know and enjoy the trip through time. It is similar to how Johnny experienced the N64 later in its life, except mine was much later for me.
I think it's funny that you didn't mention Spyro, and I bet now you are getting one helluva backlash.
He didn't grow up playing Spyro. (See BrainScratchComms Spyro commentary)
Because I totally follow his let's play channel? :|
***** I was just telling you why he didn't mention Spyro. I didn't say you had to follow the LP channel. :/
BladeBlur I nearly reported you on accident. Lol. Weird coincidence because I love the spyro games
That opening really brings me back
Johnny you just made my day. 'in the hunt' is a game I remember playing when I was younger but I thought it was super Nintendo so I wasn't sure if I imagined it or not. I need to find it online, for a decent price now. Thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing your PS1 memories. I look forward to more nostalgic trips.
You Should Do More System Retrospectives ! Awesome Video :)
....Like the Dreamcast, Right!!
And the First Xbox right?
RockmanSam Ya that would be awesome !
Skizzy Sage I went with the GameCube after the PSONE!!
Same here ! :)
I love the Plastation 1 startup sound
I love the PS1's Dualshock controller. That thing is bitching.
Super nostalgic for me too! I remember playing Crash 2 & 3, Tetris plus, Spider-Man, and so many others! Great memories!
Oh how I LOVE the transition of Crash. I was saying like, WHAT ABOUT CRASH BANDICOOT? Then I got my answer at the end. Thank you for all your incredible videos, I will be watching pretty much all of them. You make them with amazing ease and the style I just love. Thank you :D
My short story with the PlayStation
I was a Nintendo girl. We had the N64 (me and my brother)... and THEN my uncle bought a PlayStation. I remember we liked going there because... I don't know. We always felt that our Nintendo 64 was like a toy, and that the PlayStation was so high tech. We used to play a shitty Star Wars game... The Phantom Menace, but to me it's a guilty pleasure. I know it's bad... but I like it, and now own it lol. I didn't actually own a PS myself till like... 2008.
Some IDIOT I knew sold me a MINT CONDITION PlayStation that I think he must have used TWICE in his life because to this day I can't believe the condition this machine is in. It looks BRAND NEW, I'm not even exagerating... I'm even scared of using it, so I just play PSOne CD based games on my PS3. His "package" also came with an FF VII copy (again, it's like I bought it yesterday condition wise) a GameBoy, and all for like $30
And I don't feel bad for snatching it away from him >:T He didn't care for what he have. I'll treat this system with love and care. It deserved a better owner... but MAN was I lucky.
But the N64 had much much much.. much better games!!!
MadMax052 Don't agree.
The best playstation games are literally cheap ripoffs of N64 ones, as admitted in this video.
MadMax052 Uh... How is the Final Fantasy series an N64 ripoff? How is Metal Gear Solid a Nintendo 64 ripoff? Symphony of the Night may be ripping off Metroid... but that's SNES, not N64. Chrono Cross? Gran Turismo? Tomb Raider?
What are you even talking about?
I'm talking about how every platformer he mentioned is trying to be super Mario 64 and failing, even though super Mario 64 wasn't even the best platformer on N64.
Those games you mentioned aren't ripoffs, but they sure haven't aged very well. Besides FF, MGS, and Tomb Raider weren't excusive to playstation.
Would I give up Zelda to play Grand Turismo? What a silly question indeed. Excuse me, I must go fillet myself for asking such a silly question :o
I may be a Nintendo fan but I can't deny the credit the PlayStation deserves
Bro, the effort alone that must have been put into the intro sound.. I can’t even finish
Great video. I always wonder if I was older and grew up in the late 90s if I would have had a PS1, N64, or both.
I would have rather grown up with PS1. It had way more variety in genre and mascots, loads of third party supporters, and some games that are expensive as shit like Klonoa, Tomba, and Suikoden 2, which would have been awesome to buy at retail price. The N64 has much less variety. Very few fighting games or RPGs, literally not a single classic 2D game, and they are relatively cheap, money wise. Even some of the more expensive games don't reach several hundred dollars like a whole bunch of PS1 games do.
Johnny vs. Xenoblade Chronicles. It needs to happen.
"You won't know the meaning of this message until later." Barely caught that at 14:40
Love your channel! Your reviews are amazing!
I remember the dark days, of when I stopped watching your videos for a bit, but then one fate full day, I saww you upload vs playstation, my initial thoughts, "one man can not take on an entire console". This video, is gravy.
"
It's like an episode of Game Sack; great episode, John!
WrongButtonGames only more brief and entertaining.
Crash marathon... hell yeah!
Mannn the PlayStation era was wild, the amount of games I had for this over the years was crazy.Good ole nostalgia 😊
Damn it's weird how the end music can still put a smile on my face and get me bobbing up and down to the tune.
4:20 Racial undertones for teh win?
Just blaze
I forgot the actual name of the car, but I can already sense the torches and pitchforks.
Why wasn't I born in the 90s like you were? Unfortunately since I was born in 1997 I didn't get the chance to truly experience
Ryan Saeed but didnt get the chance to experience it
+Carl Bloke The 90's weren't some magical time where nothing bad ever happened like people would have you believe, there was quite alot of shit.
18aidanme nope the 90s actually was a magical time. many miraculous thing shave happened
Carl Bloke And many miraculous things happened in every decade.
18aidanme 90s was still miraculous
Omg! Rugrats Reptar Rescue. It has been so long since i last played it, thank you for mentioning it.
Daaaaamn, that music at the beginning never fails to send chills down my spine!
Most people only like Odd world because Matthewmatosis forced them to like it.
What's with parents and selling old games behind the backs of their children?
heroshadow42 90s parents didn't fuck around
(not that I would know cause I was born in '97)
A lot of games in my early days as a gamer were rentals.
I mean it's sad and all but damn the SNES and PS1 had some of the best games ever, with the PS2 imo somehow managing to outdo both.
It had a lack of consistently good platformer series but if you were a fan of action RPGs, it was fucking heaven.
Yeah I know right it's kinda annoying.
The PS1 was my very first console. The intro is just nostalgia to my ears. While I didn't own most of the popular games on the system like Crash Bandicoot, Symphony of the Nights, Final Fantasy VII, and Spyro the Dragon, I still had a blast with the years I owned it. Sadly it didn't last very long, and it's long dead by this point, but it's oh so nostalgic.
I remember playing the hell out of Motor Toon back in the day and to be fair, the "less cartoony" bonus version of it, which you unlock by finishing the championship in 1st place on expert mode, looked pretty impressive for its time. The tank mini game as well as battleships were fun as well.
You 'got a kick out of Tekkan 2'? Lol, nice pun! :P
Lol, you can turn Gex's voice off. xD In the options when you're selecting the Load Game/New Game.
+Jərımıąhısąıąh Yep.
Great Review, the PS1 is one of the greatest systems ever. Got one of these in the summer of '98 and i still love it.
I've been watching your videos occasionally for a while now, and though I considered it, I never ended up feeling the need to subscribe. But a Crash Bandicoot marathon? That clinches it! I'm looking forward to your reviews of the Playstation's unofficial mascot.
8:35 First game? You mean the game that was released on the MSX2 and the NES in 1987?
I'd love to see you review Brave Fencer Musashi one of these days. Maybe take a break from marathons?
I like how subtle you were when talking about Crash Bandicoot.
God, just in the last scene when I saw the video ending and a picture of Crash Bandicoot in the PC, I make a big smile
Hint Hint Crash Bandicoot
we pretty much could have seen that on his monitor of his desktop in the background XD
Hiita Firecharmer he could've trolled us
I knew he was going to make a marathon of Crash Bandicoot one of my favourite VG series of all time.
Johnny, you should go more console reviews. I'd love to see a review on the Genesis
and the snes
Shadow'sGameRoom And the Gamecube.
TheWraithOfMooCow
and the original Xbox
And Ps2
@@Akatsukileader9 GUESS WHAT? UPDATE VIDEO
Oh man I remember that Rugrats game. I played it so much as a kid.
Hearing that intro made my spine shiver. Thanks mate.
Playstation was the best thing back in the good old days...Johnny you forgot about Resident Evil...or do you have plans for that?
FF7 was the first RPG for me but FF9 is my all time favorite..plus thank to my dad I got my hands on some other RPGS like " wild arms" " Beyond the Beyond" I was hook to those games.
Happy 20 Anniversary Playstation :3
I remember ridge racer. My family was never big into gaming so we ended up getting a PS1 when I was like 8 (2007) and that was one of the games we had with it
Wow watching this brings back memory's it was my first gaming experience
Here I was thinking Johnny was gonna review Spyro.
Well, he'll probably cover the Crash/Spyro crossover!
***** But those were only available on the GBA and he said he's only covering the PS1 games for now.
Ohh, I see. I didn't know how much of the Crash series he was gonna do.
I hope we don't have to wait another 7 years for the PS3 or Gamecube video.
Maybe
Kudos for mentioning Brave Fencer Musashi! I adore that game! It's sequel, not so much, though. It's soundtrack is epic too! Totally one of the most underrated games of its generation.
I JUST now noticed that crash 2 music when you talk about the memory card...damn
It really saddens me to hear that you didn't enjoy Abe's Oddysey. I'd say it's one of the very best games on the console and one of the best games ever, along with its sequel.
I will say, watching this reminds me of a lot of very good games that I'd forgotten about. I loved Vigilante 8 but could never get into Twisted Metal. I'd say the PS 1 is probably the best games console ever. Mostly because it just focused purely on the games.
Oh, has anyone played Aladdin: Nasira's Revenge on PS1? Such a hard, fun game.
I did a long time ago. Never finished it because I lent to a friend along with other games like Parasite Eve, but never got them back. *sigh*
I did..didn't get far,
Damn, that start up sound gave me the shivers and a big smile on my face. I miss my old PlayStation ;;
from watching you and caddy's reviews, my love of the playstation has been totally reinvigorated.
The Playstation 2 is my favorite console of all time.
mine too
Mine is PS1(don't have a PS2):(
I haven't even played all the games that are considered the best on the system but its still my favorite console of all time
Mine is PS1 PS2 and PS3 Mostly the first haha!
ps1 then ps2 for me
Drinking game for this video: Take a shot every time Johnny says "The likes of..."
Dude, seriously, I love your videos but I'm sure you can find other phrases to say instead.
The likes of this comment will help me construct future reviews. :D
I guess I went a little overboard this time, I'll just make sure I have my coffee before I begin writing the next review.
Even though I really like this video, this was more of a retrospective of your PS1 games than a review on the console. This was still a great video.
Right next to toy story 2 is monsters inc scream arena for me, love this video! So nostalgic
