  • Last week I shared my Top Diver watches of 2023, but this video I'm sharing my favorite watches of 2023 that I've gotten hands on with to review. I start under $500 and make my way up all the way to $80,000. Let me know what you think of my choices and hope you enjoy!

    Really digging almost all the picks here. I especially love the Grand Seiko and Cartier models. The GS' SBGW299 & SBGW297, as well as the Asia Pacific limited "Red Fuji" version, seem to be geared towards smaller wrists, including unisex/ladies (I'm not a huge fan of the ladies designs except for one or two pieces). The SBGW305 with the beads of rice bracelet is really elegant. However, as much as I love the Tank Normale (non-skeleton and skeleton versions), I'd have to pick the Santos Dumont Micro Rotor Skeleton (lacquer yellow gold and stainless steel versions). Thanks for a great year of watches, Derek, and I hope you and everyone reading this have a happy holiday season. ⌚️🎊

      The SBGW's in the 36.5mm 44GS cases do wear a good bit smaller than something like an SBGW231 or any of the 37.3mm cased watches. That said, the 44GS cased watched aren't particularly feminine. They have sharp chamfered lugs and they are relatively robust. I own an SBGW269 @37mm, I've got a 7,5" wrist, it's no problem. These are dress watches that dress casual well, they will fit almost any wrist, that is what a truly well thought out vintage inspired aesthetic offers. I did find the smaller 44GS cased SBGW293 I tried on did look too small, but they are stunning, those watches will fit a 7" wrist I would think.
      I have a friend with wrists larger than mine, he was a linebacker on a D1 college team, the guy wears all kinds of vintage wristwatches from the 50's 60's in particular, they look great and it's not as if he has something to prove.
      By offering more watches between about 36-40mm, watch makers not only suddenly offer options to people left out in the cold due to having relatively small wrists, they are also offering watches that likely offer someone who would otherwise wear maybe a 42mm watch a better fitting alternative.

    Fully agree on the SLGA019 - seems to have gone under the radar. The shade of the dial coupled with the gun metal grey like hew of the titanium is right up my alley. And the finishing on the hands and markers almost makes the watch seem like a bargain. I know a lot of people don’t like the strap on the Evolution 9 GS but I love them. My only misgiving is the finishing on the movement, the frosted metallic effect makes it look a bit plastic when not viewed up close. Still that wasn’t enough to stop me from buying one, currently my favourite in my small collection.

    The Zenith would be my perfect one and done only watch, not only cool under the radar watch vibes only appreciated by the watch nerds, but also a historic movement.

    Question about automatic watches.
    Assumption: All automatic watches eventually require servicing because the lubricant will degrade over time as a result of oxidation.
    Question: If an automatic watch with a sealed case (perhaps water resistant to 100m) were assembled in an inert gas environment (say Nitrogen or Argon) would the watch then be expected to go and extremely long time before needing serviced again?

    • @michaelr21
      @michaelr21 6 месяцев назад

      I am no expert at this, but water resistance (of a seal) is quite different from the resistance against vapour or gas. There are maybe some alternative O-Rings (perhaps PTFE) that are better at that, but i don't know if they are suitable for watches.
