Yeh sure, they could have done a rewrite and improved the performance just you describe, and it would be a relatively modest change to the design with great bangs per buck outcomes. However, it would be a change to the design and that means spending money on RnD. You know how the corporate accountants get when you start to talk about spending money, you need to check that the Defibrillator is all charged up and that someone knows where the stretchers and nurses are. More so the case, when you can just fiddle with the spec sheet in the marcom dept.for no money at all, and pretend the numbers are better. Let's face it who, will actually measure the engine output anyway. Just ship the product, let the public drive it to death, then tell them it's not eligible for warranty repair. They'll never know.
John I hope you’re wrong on this one. I’ll be on the front line working on these rigs. And personally I’ll be doing the shark also. I’ll stick with a time tested diesel any day. Over a un proven byd drive train that’s been here for two minutes
Seriously, K backwards N is launching the Tasman mid '25!? Wow, they sure have fingers squarely on the pulse of the sales market in Australia! Love to see how many they don't sell because the Burn You Dealership Shark is going to outsell the Tasman by, say, 10-15 to 1. I look for to your video in mid to late '25 with the sales figures of both these vehicles and see if the excited factor is still the same in K backwards N, or is our smugness from knowing that the Tasman is going to fail like some poor sod trying to ride a skateboard along the guard rail outside of Parliament House
Blah blah blah. Most ute owners only buy one for the image and drive them on tarseal, empty most of the time. How many of them have custom rims as well. If practicality was king, we'd all have Swifts and be hiring a truck for towing those odd times. Nice to confirm people are so insecure they judge themselves only by having the biggest or most powerful.
Well, i wouldn't worry about the engine. 8 speed gearbox will make it pull grand. Plus id rather be slightly slower with the older low power engine than on the side of the road with some new shit heap turbo.
Is the derated engine likely to be better in terms durability and longevity? Souped up diesels may be fun to drive but will turn into a pile of molten alloy very quickly with a minor overheating event.
Pretty sure there’s no way the Tasman will have a 3.5T towing capacity or a GCM >6000kg. And it’ll probably weigh about 2200kg maybe. I’d suggest towing might be 3T or maybe 3.1T. Also can’t see it having a 1000kg payload either.
Hi John, the 2.2 was 100% redesigned in 2020 when they mated it to the 8 speed DCT Santa Fe and Sorento. Aluminium block and timing belt unlike your Santa Fe’s iron block and timing chain, just to name a couple of differences. This new version, with the al block and timing belt, is fitted to Tasman. So it’s four years old not 15 or so
That was an evolution of the design - it's got the same fundamentals and outputs, bore, stroke, etc. It's the same engine. Your statement - 100% redesigned - implies a clean sheet and nothing carried over. That's not what happened.
@AutoExpertJC A new block, made out of a different material, doesn’t constitute new? They also do not share the same bore and stroke or displacement: R 2.2 (2009-current): 85.4x96mm 2,199cc Smartstream 2.2D (2020-current): 83x99.4 2,151cc

The Tasman- when Temu does Trucks ;)
Sorry I'm old school utes only have two doors .
Single cab ones…
Yes, and load space not sacrificed for imaginary passengers
The Hilux single cab Workmate would be the one to go for.
@@stendecstretcher5678 Agreed, and it has a petrol option
I assume it'll be priced to compete with the Chinese, where at least their reputation and long warranty can be a positive differentiator.
Being a very happy owner of a 2023 Kia Carnival for the family I was keen to bring a Tasman in to the stable. After seeing it, not anymore.
A design based on the bug eyed WRX disaster (of many years ago). A Tasman redesign is close.
So the engine is essentially a Santa fe with an ecu remapping?
Not much of a re-map...
why did they not just give us a Santa fe?
Sorry, I meant the Santa Cruz.
😄
I can't believe someone made a SsangYong look half decent...
That Tasman is the perfect vehicle for Halloween night. You could fit a lot of witches and gobblins in the back. 😅
I heard the design team used Lego bricks and rubber bands for the concept design and just made subtle improvements from there to release.

@@darrylmackie9184 Golden earring, golden tan, and blow wave in their hair?
Well, i wouldn't worry about the engine. 8 speed gearbox will make it pull grand. Plus id rather be slightly slower with the older low power engine than on the side of the road with some new shit heap turbo.
BYD Shark makes the Tasman look stupid. And I'm not even talking about the styling.
Agreed. Too little, too ugly, too late.
In this day and age it seems even cars can identify as something they’re obviously not.. I used to like cars 🤔
A diesel plugin hybrid would've been a cool innovation. Oh well
Yeah Mazda's done that. And it's brilliant!
Too hard for emissions you can’t keep a diesel hybrid hot enough
Is the derated engine likely to be better in terms durability and longevity?
Souped up diesels may be fun to drive but will turn into a pile of molten alloy very quickly with a minor overheating event.
7,850 RPM? Does this engine even rev that high? I doubt it means 700-850 either. So what number was that?!
I was waiting for the Tasman release. 2.2 hah I went and bought a Next Gen Ranger yesterday
I honest-to-God like the way it looks.
Come fight me, Cadogan!
Nah - you deserve A)pity, and B) spectacles.
@@AutoExpertJC LMAO
Maybe a trip to specsavers matey?
Unless it's $10, grand less than the competition, it won't sell well.😮
Pretty sure there’s no way the Tasman will have a 3.5T towing capacity or a GCM >6000kg.
They also do not share the same bore and stroke or displacement:
R 2.2 (2009-current):
85.4x96mm 2,199cc
Smartstream 2.2D (2020-current): 83x99.4 2,151cc
@@AutoExpertJC you don’t have to like facts
11:42 awkward you knew exactly what my schedule was today. 🎉
Hopefully BYD gives you a Shark for a long term review…
Put the Stinger engine in it with revised tune to suit the heavier Tasman
