Mandatory mention of Your Only Move Is Hustle, it’s like 4 quid and while it’s a bit outside of the norm for fighting games (with it being turn based) I still think it’s absolutely goated go try it.
It's important to mention that while it's turn based, it gives you a real time playback of the match after it ends. Which can lead to wild replays that are visually stunning sometimes

Another really cool thing about Tough Love Arena is that it has a built in modding tool for making custom characters. You can't upload custom sprites yet (at least not without a workaround) but I've seen some really cool stuff made with just the base sprites. Garlic with air combos, recreations of characters from other fighting games, basically anything is possible

I've tried to get into skullgirls on 3 separate occasions and each time it ended in tragedy as the sheer number of stuff to remember is brutal. I had to take multiple breaks while playing through just the tutorial because of how much there is to remember.
As someone who recently got into skullgirls, I can tell you this. It is well worth the effort to learn to play it. As for the tutorials, admittedly they're pretty daunting, but I'd recommend finishing chapter 2 and stopping there until you have a better grasp of the game's basic mechanics. I downloaded the free beta version of Your Only Move is Hustle and HOOOOLY that game’s great. A traditional fighting game it is not, but it’s a fantastic adaptation of a Smash-style fighting game in a turn-based format. It’s odd for the first few matches, but then it’s TONS of fun. The beta is a bit old and doesn’t have the same content as the full game, but it’s still the same game to the point that there’s CROSSPLAY between the beta and full release. Even in single player it’s fun just wailing on a dummy because of how easy it is to get some of the coolest combos you’ll ever see in any FG ever. And if the beta doesn’t have enough content for you, the full game is $5 on Steam and has FULL WORKSHOP SUPPORT meaning you have infinite potential for new characters via mods. In most cases I’d probably recommend an actual fighting game over Hustle, but DANG is Hustle a ton of fun.
I think what's elegant about the Tough Love Arena characters is that the 3 heart characters are each 1/3 of a shoto. One has a DP, one has a projectile, and one has a tatsu. And they're all situationally useful
i need to mention the Touhou fighting game Hisoutensoku, it is an absolute blast with a strong community that still do tourneys and stuff to this day, it also has rollback netcode. it's goated it's free and it's one of the most unique fighting games I've ever come across. using a card-based system for specials and super's while every character can use projectiles and also fly. matches get crazy it's worth picking it up.
While not a traditional fighting, I gotta push Samurai Gunn 2 onto the radar. It’s a high octane one-shot platform fighter with simple to learn and hard to master controls, it’s up to 4 players, and while still in early access, it sees continuous improvement and love from its devs, and could really use the love of the people
I have two game suggestions, one paid and one free. The first one is Them's Fightin' Herds! What started as a My Little Pony fangame eventually turned into it's own project. Lauren Faust even helped out with the game's art! It's a pretty fast paced fighting game with a small roster, but pretty good variety. There is a character with ONE FRAME NORMALS! There's a character who's missing pretty much all of her kit except for a single grab, and she's high tier! There's a gator detective that eats his gun for a victory pose! The game is fucking wild and I think EVERYONE needs to see this game for how fucking bonkers it is!
As a Hololive fan I love what Idol showdown does. It is what I wanted from a Hololive fighting game, a team fighter that is based on grounded gameplay along with a lot of call backs for fans while not just locking out non Hololive fans. Like people who understand Korone (like me) will love what the team has done reference wise. I really wanna play it since there is so much love into the game
Coming from someone who just enjoys fighting games, I understand zero references that haven't been explained by my brother who watches their channels. However, the stuff is still funny to someone like me who doesn't watch any of these people, and it's easy to learn. Not mentioned in this video are the single player Virtual Frontier and Arcade modes. They are really fun. Coming from someone who doesn't watch vtubers, I found this game to be really fun. This video is already a bit dated, since they recently added Ollie to the game(her supermove is hilarious). There are characters for all playstyles in the game. What he's complaining about with Korone are problems I encounter with Coco: Our mains perform poorly against those character types. Please go try it for yourself, the creators put a lot of effort into making and balancing the game, and it truly is a lot of fun even for people who don't understand the references.
Great list, though I'd also like to give a shoutout to the two games that basically started the modern free-to-play fighting game model: Killer Instinct 2013 and Dead or Alive 5/6. KI has great netcode and a fast-paced combat system, and also has weekly free character rotations. Plus, it was recently announced that they're gonna resume updating the game with a balance patch later this year. It's also pretty easy to find matches in. DOA5/6 unfortunately can't say the same about its netcode due to being from "the before times", but the base gameplay of the series is imo some of the most fun and accessible in the genre. Both 5 and 6 have free to play versions, and I'd say it's definitely one of the most perfect games for someone who wants to get into fighting games, as most characters are easy to pick up, but there's lots of depth in both movesets and the game's mechanics. While it's definitely on the nicher side, you can usually find a few people on, and recently Xtreme Fighters Showdown/Hoodless has begun hosting monthly tournaments for both games on PS4 and PC. Also Granblue Rising is gonna do the same thing
One weird spot i would give myself is definitely to the engine MUGEN (or more specifically IKEMEN, as that's what's most often used for games nowdays). There's not only the aspect of making your own roaster with what people make, but there's a lot of handcrafted fighting games of the original and fangame flavour made on it. Games like Kirby Battle Blitz and The Black Heart come to mind as being pretty cool games made on it
I'd like to mention Killer Instinct (2013) Its not only free with xbox gamespass for the full version but there's a free character rotation you can try when ever. Not only that but it's just been announced the game is getting updated once again so nows a great time to try one of the best Fighting Games out there with some of the best netcode and some of the coolest characters and a bangin soundtrack. Its also cross play with steam which is usually $20 but only lobby and casual online modes.
Learning and playing +R when the netcode patch came was one of the most gratifying FG experiences I have had. It was hard, and some players were really good but at the time there were plenty of other new players and really, while the game is hard it's not very hard to pick up and start doing cool stuff. These days, I am not so sure how "active" the steam community is, every time I check there is not enough people to even register on steam stats, so less than 200. But even so, it's a great game and if you have a group of friends who like learning new FGs, this is an easy pick.
I can't stress enough PLEASE PLAY YOMI HUSTLE The base game is already cool enough, but the mods make the game CRAZY. Really fun to just dick around with friends as well.
+R baiken is one mechanic I NEED to see make a comeback. At least the out of block options because I enjoy having options on defense to do a 180 on my opponent. I don't want to see that in strive but rather a tag game where defense tends to last a bit longer.
Skullgirls is cool but for beginners its just not accessible. There is basically no beginner level players whatsoever. You will just get shitstomped by playing in discord matches for 100+ hours and if you’re ok with that great but i feel most probably aren’t.
I was about to write an essay on why you should get lunched into the sun for not mentioning mbaacc till 20:43 My bloodthirst is quenched by the mention, good job dodging the bullet XD
I dont have the execution for Skullgirls, trying and failing to learn it included a lot of tears (no actual tears were shed I am being hyperbolic) and frustrated grunts (those did happen though) all culminating into me utterly failing to learn Elizas b&b and giving up. I might pick it up again some day when my execution is better, it is an incredibly cool and well made game, but skill issue. ACPR is currently my favorite fighting game. Just the sheer amount of cool nonsense in the game is amazing. The fact that every character is somehow viable in a game where Testament isn't even the best character is amazing. It's not perfect, but I love it. I dont have much experience with the rest of the list so instead I will recommend Asura Buster on fightcade.
Aki may have been nerfed really hard, but someone managed to go to 2nd place in the EVO side tourney earlier this month. And yes, she still bonkers as hell. Ah, yes, Outrun, my favorite fighting game. Joking aside, it's actually Idol Showdown recently so I'm quite content on fighting game recently.
Support your indies! They're cheap, made with love and passion plus they're better then most modern, triple-A budget games IMO. My personal favourites so far are One Piece Fighting Adventure and BATTLE CRAZE!!
Vanilla Street Fighter IV goes on sale quite a lot for around eight US dollars or so, and I know it’s about as basic as that game gets but believe it or not there’s still people who jump on and play it.
I had some issues getting my controller to work on the Steam version of Tough Love Arena so here’s a heads up for anyone having the same problem: Go to Steam settings, Controller, Desktop Layout, Edit Layout, and map your X Y B A buttons, triggers, and bumpers to numpad keys 👍
Hyper dragon ball z is the game if you like drgaon ball it cost nothing and has zero pc requirements amazing ost and some pretty nice tech. overall the game can be considered small for modern fg standard but it's definitely worth the try
Hey long time viewer, first time commenter, please keep doing these (or something like this). There are a lot of players who don't know these games exist or where to/how to get them. This was a very digestible video, and I will be sharing it with a few discord servers lol
gotta mention Sclash its a newer game and HIGHLY suggest it. Samurai duel type game, one hit is a kill, extremely fun yet simple gameplay and still has a lot of skill that go into playing, insanely cool and fun game, and its under 10 bucks to boot!
Shoutout to Pokémon close combat, it’s still in development, has 2 devs and probably won’t feel great to people that have played a lot of FGs, but it has extremely simple inputs and lets you play a fighting game with only Pokémon (not that it’s the only one of those)
one game I would recommend would be uchu mega fight for some crazy disjointed action with about 10 characters x3 because every character has 3 variants that change their playstyle. Plus its a FREE BROWSER GAME powered by pico-8
You should have added the Killer Instinct Microsoft version. It started a free-to-play with a fighter rotation and you can choose to pay for the complete roster. Some people might mention Brawhalla and Multiverus as well. I'm going to check out Fightcade. First time I've heard about it.
I know this is about "cheap" fighting games but some of these like Skullgirls and +R are actually just my favorite fighting games that I prefer over others. And fightcade just lets you play a WHOLE lot of things. But yeah. Skullgirls is fucking awesome.
You can get quite a few Capcom games for 2$ each through the Capcom Arcade Stadium, also the Arcade Archives have a lot of foghting games including almost every SNK NeoGeo game. King of Fighters 98 & 02 are 15$ each and are some of the best in the series, Steam also has a 35$ bundle with those 2 & KoF 13. Chaos Code & Them's Fightin Herds are some good indie fighters for 20$ each. Arcana Heart is 30$, an underappreciated game with fun gameplay a little bit of customization with you being able to decide which Arcana to use which does give you some different attacks and other things.
A passion project in its fourth game is Shadow Fight 4: Arena, a mobile title. The input for this game has been improved in the hardware of newer phones, I think, with the invention of multi-touch. I'm kind of a newbie. I'm going to go lose for a while.
HOT TAKE! SkullGirls is a very underrated game tbh... I live in Latvia and i might be THE ONLY active SkullGirls player out there, tis really sad, since this is my first FG and i'm very passionate about it.
obligatory beo isnt a grappler comment because his command grab is painfully slow and gives low reward, instead he gets a hkd and mixes you with high or low
As someone who has to do meth everytime I think about getting takeout to figure out if it’s actually worth it, thanks for making this video, appreciate it
You should try Pokemon Close Combat, it's a fan fighting game with easy inputs and mechanics, it has a small roster but each pokémon represents an archetype
@@milkywayflea404yeah, they just added Falinks and then they're gonna add a gen 9 rep then basically opening the floodgates for whoever joins They just wanted to get a fighting type from every current generation first
So TLDR! Skullgirls- vs game Gg xx plus r - anime BlazBlue centralification - anime Idol showdown - eeeee... Street fighter Though love arena - footsie but on browser Fightcade - everything you want (From me, among us ultimate arena-normal game of SFV ;] - easy do download and mugen- bit finicky to download)
This is amazing, I only usually get sf every time it drops a new one and I cant really spend it on other stuff since a single modern fighting game takes up so much of your cash. I swear Fighting games are like the sports game genres with the way it just vacuums your money but a bit more tame
Nintendo Switch also has billions of cheap/awesome fighting games to choose from. All the way from 8 dollar arcade games to Capcom Arcade Stadium. The stadiums need paid DLC to access the games but the games individually are like super duper cheap.
If you have Playstation it's worth getting PS+. They got Dragon Ball FighterZ , Fighting EX Layer, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, Melty Blood Type Lumina, Soul Calibur 6, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11, Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, & Street Fighter 5 Champion Edition and that's just some of them.
you should really try duels of fortune, it's got an absolutely bonkers combo system and some pretty good characters, like shoto kanji who is more of a rushdown than a shoto *_AND HE HAS A FIREBALL THAT HE LOBS AND IT EVEN BOUNCES OFF WALLS_*
For those who are unware, you can still do instant overhead > special in Idol showdown. Its just instead of doing a traditonal TK input, you just cancel into the dedicated special button in the game. Its far easier and more reliable then TKing anyway.
Lethal League is one of the most unique fighting games out there and it is chock full of drip on cool shit, just hearing the music makes you wanna strike those balls.

Games like Kirby Battle Blitz and The Black Heart come to mind as being pretty cool games made on it
+R is truly an amazing fighting game that needs more attention
Idol Showdown has Inugami Korone, immediately the best one in the video.
Smash players enjoying a gekkosquirl video only to randomly catch strays out of nowhere
I can't stress enough PLEASE PLAY YOMI HUSTLE
The base game is already cool enough, but the mods make the game CRAZY. Really fun to just dick around with friends as well.
It's a cool game, but if people are looking to learn fighting games, just play fighting games lol
I was about to write an essay on why you should get lunched into the sun for not mentioning mbaacc till 20:43
My bloodthirst is quenched by the mention, good job dodging the bullet XD
I've always felt like I missed the bus on Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. I never realised there was such a way to get into it still.
I'm gonna also suggest Duels of Fortune, Battle Craze, Head2Head and Rushdown Revolt as all free fighting games as well
"Slick and refined movelist of Strive" is a very *diplomatic* way to describe it lmao
Man, I can’t wait for the day Duckstation finally gets integrated to Fightcade for that seamless Tekken 3 online
Do a part 2 with Them's Fightin' Herds please!! Great fighting game with amazing music!
I'd also add stuff like Duels of Fortune, Beatdown Dungeon, SakuraXClash, Schwarzerblitz, TMNTxJL, Head2Head, for free fighting games.
20:01 the smash slander is wild
Vanilla Street Fighter IV goes on sale quite a lot for around eight US dollars or so, and I know it’s about as basic as that game gets but believe it or not there’s still people who jump on and play it.
I used to play tough love arena in the beta
I had some issues getting my controller to work on the Steam version of Tough Love Arena so here’s a heads up for anyone having the same problem:
Go to Steam settings, Controller, Desktop Layout, Edit Layout, and map your X Y B A buttons, triggers, and bumpers to numpad keys 👍
Hyper dragon ball z is the game if you like drgaon ball it cost nothing and has
zero pc requirements
amazing ost and some pretty nice tech.
overall the game can be considered small for modern fg standard but it's definitely worth the try
Hey long time viewer, first time commenter, please keep doing these (or something like this). There are a lot of players who don't know these games exist or where to/how to get them. This was a very digestible video, and I will be sharing it with a few discord servers lol
I wish you posted more. Your videos are always top-notch. Keep up the good work gekko.
Idol Showdown also has an actually really good single player mode that's like a roguelike arcade
Holocure?
@@Valome_Virtual_Gravedigger that's a separate game actually, but you're right about that also being a roguelike
gotta mention Sclash its a newer game and HIGHLY suggest it. Samurai duel type game, one hit is a kill, extremely fun yet simple gameplay and still has a lot of skill that go into playing, insanely cool and fun game, and its under 10 bucks to boot!
Shoutout to Pokémon close combat, it’s still in development, has 2 devs and probably won’t feel great to people that have played a lot of FGs, but it has extremely simple inputs and lets you play a fighting game with only Pokémon (not that it’s the only one of those)
tough love arena actually has like 4 special moves for each character, its neat
I just learned how to play onion as you were talking
Also you didn’t talk about that one that rad Chad the mad lad and quite possibly my dad talked about
It's impressive how Idol Showdown is free. It's a legitimately great game and it's just sitting there on steam for free
The fact that it has better single player then most AAA fighting games is crazy to me for a free game. Though it kinda has to be free.
one game I would recommend would be uchu mega fight for some crazy disjointed action with about 10 characters x3 because every character has 3 variants that change their playstyle. Plus its a FREE BROWSER GAME powered by pico-8
I would also mention Killer Instinct (2013), it’s on Xbox and PC, is completely free, and is about to get a 10th anniversary update.
Thanks for finally covering Idol Showdown!
That bbtag mention got me hopes up for a sec :(
All you need to know about Pekora is that she’s a war criminal.
You should have added the Killer Instinct Microsoft version. It started a free-to-play with a fighter rotation and you can choose to pay for the complete roster. Some people might mention Brawhalla and Multiverus as well. I'm going to check out Fightcade. First time I've heard about it.
THANK YOU! (srsly hope you do another video like this in the future)
10:05 you sold me on this game
I felt that TK rant, I main Axl in Strive and ever since I learned about the input, TK Bombers are my best friend
I know this is about "cheap" fighting games but some of these like Skullgirls and +R are actually just my favorite fighting games that I prefer over others. And fightcade just lets you play a WHOLE lot of things. But yeah. Skullgirls is fucking awesome.
I'm playing persona 4 right now and the Tanaka theme at the start for the sale was just on point
why would adding mori be awkward?
+R is pretty great for its singleplayer, too. Wish more fighters did something other than arcade and combo trials
MBAACC community version. VERY active community!
I want to get into accent core since I like Strive and absolutely loved Xrd. Just need to invest in a rig
Piracy is poggers (legally this is a joke)
skullgirls mentioned, W
Really enjoyed the video. However, I am kinda sad that E's Laf wasn't included. It's a really fun, free fighter.
A passion project in its fourth game is Shadow Fight 4: Arena, a mobile title. The input for this game has been improved in the hardware of newer phones, I think, with the invention of multi-touch. I'm kind of a newbie. I'm going to go lose for a while.
It's a crime that Ultra Fight Da Kyanta 2 wasn't mentioned
Agreed.
Fantasy Strike doesn't ask more than 10 minutes of your time, to get started.
It's also great.
Criminal that I had to scroll down this far to see Fantasy Strike mentioned
@@2010AZSame
But I play it on Switch and... I've been having problems?
And few Ranked matches...
Bro I was talking to my friend about getting into fighting games on a budget this couldn’t have come at a better tinr
Another addition would be thems fighting herds.
It's really great
HOT TAKE! SkullGirls is a very underrated game tbh...
I live in Latvia and i might be THE ONLY active SkullGirls player out there, tis really sad, since this is my first FG and i'm very passionate about it.
I played both skullgirls mobile and on PS4 and as grappler player I have to say that Beowulf is amazing
In a game called Skullgirls, who could have predicted that a burly man called Beowulf would be the best character?
@@greenbackjack768 actually the best character is a big man called big band.
obligatory beo isnt a grappler comment because his command grab is painfully slow and gives low reward, instead he gets a hkd and mixes you with high or low
As someone who has to do meth everytime I think about getting takeout to figure out if it’s actually worth it, thanks for making this video, appreciate it
i hear tanakas theme at the beginning, i stay
Was that stray at Smash really necessary?
You should try Pokemon Close Combat, it's a fan fighting game with easy inputs and mechanics, it has a small roster but each pokémon represents an archetype
Oh shit there's another fanmade pokemon fighting game? I still remember Type Wild from so long ago, will definitely try this one out
@@milkywayflea404yeah, they just added Falinks and then they're gonna add a gen 9 rep then basically opening the floodgates for whoever joins
They just wanted to get a fighting type from every current generation first
So TLDR!
Skullgirls- vs game
Gg xx plus r - anime
BlazBlue centralification - anime
Idol showdown - eeeee... Street fighter
Though love arena - footsie but on browser
Fightcade - everything you want
(From me, among us ultimate arena-normal game of SFV ;] - easy do download and mugen- bit finicky to download)
It DOSENT let me move on mobile only lets me do special moves
As a former Bullet player, seeing BBCF in here brings me happiness
Idol showdown mentioned
This is amazing, I only usually get sf every time it drops a new one and I cant really spend it on other stuff since a single modern fighting game takes up so much of your cash. I swear Fighting games are like the sports game genres with the way it just vacuums your money but a bit more tame
Nintendo Switch also has billions of cheap/awesome fighting games to choose from. All the way from 8 dollar arcade games to Capcom Arcade Stadium. The stadiums need paid DLC to access the games but the games individually are like super duper cheap.
If you have Playstation it's worth getting PS+. They got Dragon Ball FighterZ , Fighting EX Layer, Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, Melty Blood Type Lumina, Soul Calibur 6, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11, Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, & Street Fighter 5 Champion Edition and that's just some of them.
this was so real, thanks gekko!😊
haven't watched the video yet, but I'll be sad if Fantasy Strike isn't in this video
Also I'd love to play Gekko in Idol Showdown or CF
you should really try duels of fortune, it's got an absolutely bonkers combo system and some pretty good characters, like shoto kanji who is more of a rushdown than a shoto *_AND HE HAS A FIREBALL THAT HE LOBS AND IT EVEN BOUNCES OFF WALLS_*
Jojo Heritage for the future is THE Jojo game. Yeah, it's that great
Ultra Da kyanta fighters 2 is great. Harama self knows what he’s doing
"Do you have to do math every time you order takeout to figure out if it's actually worth it"
Yeah that's way too real
