Thank you so much for this video.. 👍🙂 for some reason wsl already got installed on my system and I was started seeing the Linux in the file explorer. I can explore it now..😊

I'm happy about that! Linux is essential nowadays for programmers. Good luck 🙌

Thanks, really helpful. I use Intelij and I'm thinking what would be the best option: install it in wsl or windows (and access my projects in wsl) ? what would be the best option?

I would say, install the IDE on Windows and indeed work remotely on projects stored on Linux via WSL. I use VS Code, and it has an extension to connect automatically to WSL (checkout the following videos). www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/how-to-use-wsl-development-environment-in-product.html#wsl-general

Co-pilot will find it's way into Linux. I'm not putting anything Microsoft near my machines again.

That's a valid point, but honestly it depends on your goals and the tasks you do on your machine. Some situations require Qubes, other require other distros as the main ones. But for someone that really wants to use Windows without much concerns, this is a good way to learn Linux in the same machine. There are several levels of "paranoia", and I also have mine 😅

I honestly don't understand all that stuff. I'm a cattle rancher who only uses a computer for bills and accounting, and to occasionally play an old game on disc (like Age of Empires or Crusader).
I deleted my microsoft account this morning, since Libre's version of Excel is pretty much awesome. I have been happy with linux so far

I love Linux and open source, and if I could, it would be my main OS. However, for people "forced" to use Windows professionally (even Excel, in my case), WSL is the perfect option to try and learn Linux for programming, without getting rid of Windows. Again, every setup has advantages, depends on people's goals. For basic stuff (and not only), full Linux is enough, lighter and more secure :)

I had big hopes when this came out, tried it out but found out i had no block device access... Soooo i had no use for it. Couldn't backup or restore drives or any of the other tricks with DD :(
Edit: idk if this has changed

What do u mean by block device access? What is DD?

why will you run linux on windows.... but not the other way around?? you get more stable OS and no Snooping stuff on the backend.

The goal of this video was not to trigger a discussion about operating systems and data privacy 😅 But I understand the questions. I have a full Linux machine for data sensitive ops, and I have this Windows machine running Linux via WSL only for non sensitive projects, gaming, editing, etc. And yes, I know nowadays u can do some of that on Linux. One of the main goals of this WSL setup is to help less technical Windows users to have a first interaction with Linux, and leverage both OSs in the same machine :) Could run Windows VM on Linux, but wouldnt be so efficient as WSL I guess.

@@TechWithCosta there is a lot of "I" in your reply. Again my reply is towards your title. You are not the Boss bro if you are running anything over windows. I think my critique went over your head or I didn't clearly say it. Not trying to provoke anything, just stating the facts. Are you switching over next year to Linux/BSD or you will stay with Windows as your primary computer ?

@charlesdean03 oh all good, just sharing some ideas! I honestly appreciate the comment to brainstorm about more efficient setups, always eager to learn. I've been using both, mainly due to professional requirements :/ but if I could I would go full Linux. On what distro are u on? (btw this can be a nice idea for a video 🙌)

Hey! Yes, check this out learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/tutorials/gui-apps. However, I mostly use terminal only.

Better run GNU Linux and don't rot your computer with that shit.😊
