This fits my two basic rules of fixing cars. The first is it will cost al least twice as much as you thought. The second is it will take at least twice as long as you thought. Every two hour project is just one stripped bolt away from being a two week project. But there's still nothing like the feeling when you finish and it's right again.
I've gotten very adept at removing broken bolts, using a helicoil for stripped threads, or welding it shut , drilling, and tapping it again. I did the wrench spinning thing for a living in the 90s, realized I hated working on minivans and reenlisted. Now I am retired and build hotrods/muscle cars for fun. No minivans or front drive crap boxes needed to pay my bills.

Instead of the rubber bushings see if you can find a steel replacement. It will give you a better feeling shifter, less slop, more precise... Love your films. My first Mustang was a 66 coupe w/ a 289 and a c4. Now I have a 2008 with a Roush 2.3 and the suspension is tricked out. It's been converted to the tremec t56 magnum. I was 18 when I had the 66 now I'm two months away from being 66. Keep having fun...

Hey it’s kind of expensive but invest in a hurst competition shifter you will NOT regret it. It’s an integral part of the connection between the car and the driver. I had a green 67 mustang when I was your age with a 289 3speed... blew it up and bought a 4speed top loader with a hurst comp and a new centerforce cutch it felt like a completely different car. INSANE. I wanted to sleep in my car I didn’t want to get out of it haha
That’s life with old cars. My 67 Cougar XR7 has the same shifter, so it’s helpful to see yours apart. My reverse lockout handle works fine, but it rattles when I drive it. Now it won’t be so intimidating to pull it and clean, grease, look for wear. Thanks for the video.
I got a helicoil kit on Amazon for $40 and it comes in very helpful when I strip something out. I can usually find the correct bolt at a local auto parts store if I need one. That kit has saved me 3 times in the past 2 months after bolt holes stripped out on me.
What a strange coincidence, I had a similar thing happen with my '04 VW a few weeks ago. A little rubber gasket disintegrated and had no reverse or 1st gear. Thankfully I didn't end up stripping anything fixing it though lol! Good luck, hope ya get it sorted!
I was watching as you did disassembly, and hoping that the lower part of the shifter wouldn't be stripped as well, but it looks like you might have a date with the heli-coil. I've shared misery like that too, it's never fun but you are certainly on track to have an awesome performing shifter once it's all back together. It's amazing that you've been able to bang gears so well in your POV drives with something that was on the verge of coming apart in your hands. Great filming style BTW! - Darren
Never would've guessed a shifter mount would get beat up....(trying to be funny). BTW I'm a huge fan and user of Velcro. It looks like the chrome trim is cupped slightly. So there may be enough space to use a few strips between the carpet and tunnel where you just clipped if for access. I've used it before just to keep carpet from moving even. Some people just push to hard when they're getting in and out of my old cars LOL.

Sooo close! I was rooting for you, getting ready to comment about how satisfying a shifter rebuild can be with the crisp mechanism, positive shifts......then disaster struck! I always just figure on the snowball effect being a positive-you get a head start on fixing things you didn't even realize you needed to replace.
They sell a cowl cover that blocks the vents between the windshield and the hood. Its meant to go into place when its going to rain to stop it from coming in.
Good on you for making a fun video about what must have been a frustrating moment! This stuff is way more valuable than seeing someone breeze through a project with no challenges. Did you learn any tips about how to check the brackets and stuff first that you can share with us?
The way you drive you need to get a Hurst shifter in there. I like the original shifter too. My problem is the 2-3 shift. Works great is I'm not trying to speed shift it.
I actually felt sick to my stomach when you said that something had stripped!! Yup, a Hurst shifter kit would be ideal but they're not cheap. I'm getting it for my '67 Mustang as I'm fed up almost dislocating my shoulder trying to get it into reverse!
the reverse lockout is cable accuated and the cable stretches, thus your problem. on the bottom of the cable is a screw adjustment that will take up the slack.

I've had limited success with Scott Drake parts. I'll just leave it at that. I had a top loader with a Hurst shifter and never had issues with it after a complete rebuild of the trans. Is that leak in the interior because of the cowl hats? The repair for those in 65-67 Mustangs is very labor intensive.
When i saw those old bolts i KNEW you needed run a TAP to clean the old threads that go into the shifter housing.....careful with those parts house restoration parts 90% are junk especially the chinese bolts very soft metal. Look into ARP for better bolts.
i agree, those bolts in the kit had that "made by the lowest bidder look". I thought he was going to say he snapped the bolt. Love the stang & wish the kid good luck.
Never use gasoline to clean stuff with. You would be surprised how easily you can inadvertently kill yourself or suffer sever pain. I know of a lady who burned herself to death using gasoline as a cleaner. She was using gasoline to clean with in the garage and the hot water ignited the gasoline. I know of a man that set his house on fire. Fortunately he did not injure himself. He ignited the gasoline when the shovel he was using struck concrete and cause a spark. You see, there are many ways to make sparks without using a cigarette lighter. Metal on metal can make sparks and as I said metal on concrete can easily make sparks. I am a professional mechanic and every once in a while I see a spark just using normal hand tools. I guess there is also static electricity to think about of which is everywhere all the time and I guess there are many other ways I can not even think of off hand that may cause a spark. I did this when i swapped my t10 in, i used electrical grommets for the ‘bushings’ and it works excellent
Instead of the toothbrush, try using 0000 steel wool. Works wonders on chrome rust/pitting and window stuff like over spray old sealant.

You need a Hurst Shifter, worlds better then the stock shifter. It gets rid of the slop the factory shifter has even if it is tight.

At 5:57 using the knife. NEVER pull a knife blade toward you! The end result could be fatal.
Get a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. Ford shifters don't cut the mustard.
