You are a talented teacher!! I use the Berg but have a glitch that I underuse.. I'll try this with the glitch as I should be able to throw a little farther with it.
I would definitely call the Overstable Approach Disc (Zone, Harp, Pig, etc) the training wheels disc for new players. It masks off axis torque, promotes bad form through what they think is a successful shot, and aren't really affected by wind or elevation. They just go fade... Till you've hit so many trees they only consider going fade and you buy a new one to cycle through. The Berg helps with distance forgiveness, sure. But it's also practically unthrowable with bad form, especially forehand.
I honestly don’t even understand why these are in anyone’s bag except for people who play in a lot of wind constantly. I also think these discs are why a lot of pros can’t throw with touch. They can blast it 400ft with a putter, but can’t throw 150 without skipping the disc 40ft left.
I actually learned this shot using the Glitch! I kept throwing it straight but flat so it kept going thirty to forty feet past the basket so I brought the nose up and it sat under the basket. Now I use this shot with my other putters as well
The beauty of the glitch is it’s almost unnatural glide, but if your accuracy or power is inconsistent, that glide will totally take you past the basket by a lot. My favorite way to throw it is on a low slight hyzer flip so it stands up and goes laser straight and never gets above basket height. Gives a great chance for throw ins and if I miss I kept it low and it doesn’t give you a scary putt.
Robbie, I always appreciate your content, and while I understand what you are saying about the Berg, I don't know if the training wheel analogy is the clearest. It's more a question do you want the disc to do the work and keep the same throw, or change the throw to get more discs to do what you want. PS. you can have both.
i like to warm up with a glitch and can throw it dead straight 200' (internet distance), but when i have a straight 100' upshot, i always shank the glitch into a tree, even in a wide open field. this past week at random doubles, i had a 100' approach to the pin, turned to my partner who was asking about the glitch earlier in the round and said to him 'this is exactly the shot the glitch is made for', all the while dreading a shank job and being made to look foolish. of course i pured it and cashed the throw-in from way downtown! feels good man. definitely a great shot to practice almost as much as my putt. thanks for some more tips on getting better at this and making it fun in the process!

The Berg is most assuredly NOT a "training wheel". It is a legitimate utility disc for a variety of shots. Even though it is torque resistant when it is fresh, that resistance diminishes as its glide develops over the course of its throwing life. My beaten in Berg will glide dead straight (or stay on angle) 100+ feet with a small forehand wrist pop; what some may call a (wait for it...gasp) a "touch" shot. I use a combination of Wardens, Glitches, Toros and a Berg for shaping approach shots. I'll concede that some players may lean on a fresh Berg's ability to forgive bad technique, but those players will discover that a Berg's forgiveness only lasts so long. It actually breaks in like a Pig does - albeit over a longer period of time with K1 plastic. I love my broken in Berg perhaps as much as you love your seasoned Pigs. If you take some time and season in a Berg, you may find a trustworthy tool that will get you around an obstacle like no other disc. I have one - and only one - in my bag. Sometimes it won't come out for days or weeks. But when it does come out, it rarely fails. I have some friends who are brand loyalists who wish their company brand made something like the Kastaplast Berg when they see me helicopter a shot in from an impossible lie. I just grin and say: "That sounds like a 'you' problem."
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Interestingly enough, Scott Stokely signed my original caramel brown K1 Berg when I ran into him at Boyd Hill Park in Rock Hill during last year's USDGC. I bought a neon green K1 to replace it, as the autographed one now sits on a shelf. The only reason I had a caramel brown colored one was because it was the last K1 available when I bought it in Asheville.
Funny you mention Kan-Jam. I bought a knock-off Kan-Jam( single can), from Dollar Tree for $5. I used it just like you suggested. Thank you for proving my beginner instincts constructive. Also, I have a Berg, but I reach for my Rhyno, so I took it out. You have the Pig, but something about the Rhyno just works for me on approach shots.
Being the one Berg thrower at the clinic I thought it was a good lesson. Definitely took the form out to the course and it came in handy a few times. Granted still fun to “yeet”a berg sometimes
I love my polecat. People ask me often when I make huge throw ins what I’m using and they laugh when I tell them I actually use a polecat every round. I love them for upshots and it’s just a really fun disc on or off the course
I use the Loft Hydrogen for most of my approach and putts. It goes brilliantly straight, but only if you aim it correctly. I am hoping this is the trick i needed.
Just a question as a beginner. Wouldn't you want a consistent release with mostly all disks angle wise at least and use the disc to actually do the work with the proper release in the proper spin versus as a beginner changing your release for different discs?
This is how i throw parks and upshots. I curl my disk into my left arm and using my core and then spinning and uncurling out and then finish the throw opening up with the left leg and finish pointing it at the target and low.
There are few discs that get as violently defended as the Berg out there. 😅 I knew the waters I was walking into, which is why I also stated that I think the Berg does this shot extremely well. Just wanted to lay out options ❤️❤️
@@RobbieCDiscgolf Im with you! Especially from the perspective of learning and training to get better. I use my glitch for some nose up floaty bids or a straight under the trees spinner. but otherwise I stick to my berg. As long as its a slow speed lid im up for it :)
For beginners I would highly recommend getting an understable putter or mid for these shots. There’s any number of discs I could name, but the understability will help you get distance over time and the ability (with experience) to straighten these shots out so you can eventually start ringing them up. Hyzers into the green won’t always be the ideal shot or possible, so learning to shape this approach shot is the next step, and an understable disc will be ideal to teach you both touch and the ability to shape. Don’t believe me? Watch Paige Pierce throw a Fierce or a Sol in pro events 95% of the time regardless of conditions. Or Simon Lizzotte throwing Proxies dead straight through 5ft gaps.
Very interesting. My own story: I'd call myself a beginner just becoming a "recreational/novice" player (can consistently throw 220-260' and occasionally just over 300', make about 7-8 out of 10 putts 20' out and under, usually finish a round 3-6 over and occasionally under par). I certainly don't think I've got great form or reliable shot shaping skills. My favourite discs at the moment are a Judge, an Emac Truth, and an Avenger SS. I'm in that phase where I'm trying a lot of new (to me) discs and seeing what works for me, and what I can do with them. For many of them, I don't really have the arm speed, consistent form, or "touch" to see all that much difference quite frankly, though a few have been really nice. I've tried a Polecat.....which I really wanted to like, but haven't all that much yet. Just feels weird and I've not been able to "control" it like I want to. For actual putting I vastly prefer my Judge, an MVP Atom, or an Aviar. And for up/approach shots, it's super inconsistent for me (the rim depth makes release very unreliable it seems). But of course I had to get and try a Berg. Honestly, for all the hype I wasn't expecting it to be "all that". But holy crap............by FAR the most surprising, and game changing disc I've ever thrown. For upshots from up to 150' out, it seems to do just about exactly what I wanted (and was expecting) it to do almost every time. Flies dead straight (like I try and fail to do with other discs all the time), is very comfortable, and lands "under the basket" so often I find myself surprised again and again how "good" a player I'm becoming. I'm generally knocking about 4, 5, or 6 shots off my rounds with this disc (which is huge). I LOVE my Berg (quite to my surprise). Now, everything Robbie says about this in the long term does make sense to me, and I can understand the logic. I will be interested to see how the Berg fits into my disc life over time. But for now......I'm an absolute fan of the Berg.
Added...............I'm also excited to try the form/technique Robbie teaches here. Seems to make sense, and I'm interested to see how it will work for me (and if that Polecat will work better for me than it has so far).
I feel like the berg and glitch are crutches for new players who don’t have good touch. I used to bag a berg for a long time until I learned to throw nose up putter approaches, now I have no need for a berg or glitch Use what you need to save strokes, but don’t let it hold you from an opportunity to learn new shots!
I like the berg because the courses around me have fast ground play on the greens and their premium plastic seems to stick a bit better vs a harp or something. It's also my main putter though too.
I learned nose up touch shots with the Berg. Calling any disc a crutch because it's reliable is silly, imo. Do we call Calvin's Destroyer a crutch? Especially silly when someone says a Berg is a crutch... but not an equally slow, quite similar disc like a Polecat..

It is the one that taught me the importance of what Robbie speaks of here- that sweet, hand above elbow, nose up shot that Uli also teaches. It allowed me to take soft runs at baskets, with the disc passing at chain height, and if you miss it, it running out of gas before it travels too far.
He explained it. Bergs naturally slow down. He's trying to teach how to throw with touch and nose nose up so whatever your approach disc is, it will slow down like a berg

Same here! Except I use the Evolution Eco Soft Link, 173 grams, and the Zero Medium Pure, 173 grams for my stable and understable up-shot disks.

I utilize my LSD Armadillo for approach shots.

I love the myth that the Berg is for people that throw full power on every approach. Then again, I throw forehands for any approach shot I can.
The Berg is training wheels? That’s pretty insulting. I’ve seen good players throw trash shots with the Berg. There’s still touch involved.
The Berg is made for this shot, so why try to adapt other discs for this shot. Keep it simple.
